I took the liberty of putting together a video that highlights Jordan Norwood's 2011 season. It shows all his catches and punt returns if anyone wants to watch.
I don't wanna make it a QB based thread, but feel free to comment on any throws too.
I'm in the process of making one for MoMass too.. but I'm missing one of his catches in the Seattle game. I can't find access to this game anywhere. If anyone has it, please send me a PM. Otherwise, I'll just make his vid without that 1 catch. lol.
Thanks for the video. I like Norwood. I think he's got a chance to be productive in this offense, especially if Weeden is everything we think he is.
He's one of those under the radar players that we need to break out. We don't need him to be a pro bowler, just be productive. I think Weeden is going to need all the help he can get in the first half of the year while he is still picking up the offense and the feel of an NFL game.
lol.. sorry.. i could have blasted the video with music.. but chose to just keep the commentary for a better game feel.
His biggest catches came from the Jacksonville game, and the 2nd Bengals game I believe. From the rest of the video, you can see he is pretty agile. He makes guys miss, and has a nice quick spin move, as well as this double juke moves where he stops at a dime and changes direction. I think that's what I like best about him.
Really, not a lot to dislike about Norwood. Size maybe..
He could be a factor. Benjiman, Cooper, Little, MoMass (if what they are saying is true) could be interesting. Now, find a way to bring in Harvin and maybe we are strong all of a sudden.

I really like Norwood, but I'm getting the impression his job is on the line.
For as sorry as our WRs are, there seem to be some locks ... Little, Mass, Cribbs, Benjamin (I don't think there is any way he doesn't make the team). That leaves a lot of guys fighting for two spots. And they seem to really like Cooper.
But I'm definitely a fan of Norwood. Would like to see more of him.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...
According to Terry Pluto and the link I posted in the Mini Camp thread from KFFL, they're hoping enough of these WRs step up to keep Cribbs out of the #3 WR spot w/ more time on special teams.
I actually feel pretty good about the #3 spot with guys like Benjamin, Norwood, and Cooper competing there.
The top spots still need to prove themselves. Little has a great deal of promise. I think that Massaquoi could return tot eh form he showed as a rookie. If that happens, we're in good shape. If not, then we'll be trying to bump other guys up the food chain, which may not work as well.

If that means anything in this thread . . .
I think a 3 WR set of Little, MoMass, and Alternating Norwood and Benjamin will do fine...
It all hinges on MoMass being productive when he gets the chance, no Pro Bowl level, just... good... Take some pressure off Little, which opens him up, which opens the middle for the slot and TEs, which opens up the running game...
Is it me, or is there like, no middle ground for us this year?
I don't mean we'll be Saints/GB level, but it seems everything is hinging on everything else, so we'll either be good, or... well, we can't be as bad as last year, right?
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?
I disagree... I think our upside is middle ground. Just trying to be realistic. MoMass is our second-best receiver. He's not good. We all know that. We've seen him play three years now. If he can play at an average level and Little plays very well and our O-line and Richardson stay healthy and Weeden plays well for a rookie we can be average.
I really don't see a scenario with this group where they're very good.
Who have we had throwing the ball over the past 3 years?
Receivers cannot throw themselves the ball. It's hard to be productive as a receiver without a productive QB.

yeah, but regardless of who is throwing the passes, you still have to adjust your route to get the ball. It's not going to be exactly on target every time.
If the receiver runs an out, or a post, runs medium to deep routes, and the QB looks only at short east throws, then the receiver running those outside or deeper routes is not going to see the ball no matter how open he is.
Holmgren is now on record saying that our receivers were open "a lot more than you might think" last year. Our receivers did a decent job last year, but even defenses stopped worrying about them because we rarely threw outside/deep .... and often, when we did, the throws were badly off target, and looked like punts, with the receiver waiting .... and waiting ...... or thrown to Norwood, like in the Bengals game where the defender fell down, and the pass led Norwood out of bounds with no one covering him.

i'm not talking about massaquoi not getting the ball thrown to him. I'm talking about his inability/unwillingness to adjust to the ball thrown to him after it's in the air. I can't remember a starting WR in the NFL who was so lazy about going to get the ball after it was thrown.
Jerome Simpson has 70 catches and 1004 yards in 4 years.
Gresham averages about 50 catches and 500 yards in 2 years with the Bengals.
Gresham is a good player, but hardly a game changer. He's not a Rob Gronkowski.

Reggie Wayne and Pierre Garcon both had 250+ yards more than our most productive receiver.. Brandon Marshall had 400+ yards more than our most productive receiver... Jabbar Gaffney had 200+ yards more than our most productive receiver... Did they throw the ball to themselves?

This is a silly comment. you could also say he has 70 catches and 1004 in 50 years. He was behind TO and Ocho two years ago. Last year he had 50 catches and 725 yards. Green had 65 catches and over 1000 yards as a rookie. Gresham had 596 yards on 56 catches.
Last year our two leading receivers were Little with 709 yards on 61 catches and Cribbs with 518 yards.
Massaquoi, who had 31 catches on 74(!) targets, managed a measley 384 yards despite having the second-most targets on the team.
900 or so yards in a season is not some amazing accomplishment.
It basically works out to about 60 yards/game.
Further, I didn't watch Colts games, so I don't know all of their problems. I did watch our games. I know that Little started out in the slot. He ran short routes. He caught a lot of shot passes. Then he moved outside, but we still threw him a lot of short passes. Massaquoi was hurt last year ... a foot injury, and a concussion. We didn't tend to throw him a lot of short passes.
Here's a huge stat ... as stats go ......
Our top receiver as far as yards/catch was Josh Cribbs with 12.6 yards/catch. (aside from Wallace's single 21 yard catch) Norwood was next with 11.7 yards/catch. We did not throw deep at all.
I can only go by what I saw here last season. Guys were open, but ignored. I think that we'll see a substantial turn around by our receivers this year.

Hell, Massaquoi had 624 yards as a rookie. (and 18.4 yards/catch)

Just like you would agree that you can judge a QB on his own by separating the OL, RB, and WR play, you can do the same for the WR.
Yes, they depend on the QB. But you definitely cannot buy into the argument that you can only judge a WR if he has great QB play. Because that is the slippery slope you are headed down.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...
A team can evaluate receivers based on a lot of things.
Is the receiver running the right routes? Does he get open? Does he catch the ball when the pass is catchable? Does he adjust to poorly thrown balls? Does he see the ball all the way into his hands? Hoes he use his hands to catch the ball? Does he secure the ball easily, or does he struggle to put the ball away before making a most upfield? There are many others before you even look "just" at his catches.
I would guess that the Browns saw enough from the receivers we have to consider the position 2nd-4th on their list of needs, possibly behind RB, QB, OL ........ which happen to have been our 1st 3 picks ..... However, if they could have grabbed a premium talent, they probably would have. They didn;t have that opportunity, so they didn't, instead preferring to go with what they have, and adding a pure speed guy.

Only time will tell, but I think the FO blew it when they traded down in the 3rd to take Hughes. Had they stayed put, Sanu was there for the taking and, IMO, would have been a noticeable improvement over all our WRs not named Little. We'll get to see Sanu twice a year for the near future, so we'll get to re-live that little gaffe frequently.
Just keep repeating the FO's mantra on this: our WRs are fine... our WRs are fine... our WRs are fine.

well, according to the rumors about Kendall Wright, apparently all they were interested was with a speed guy.
How many shot did we have at guys like Hill, Sanu, Childs?
We obviously thought Little is our #1, and felt strong enough that MoMass could turn it around and be a respectable #2 that all we needed was a speed guy to compliment them...
I'm 92% sure Little will turn out to be a solid WR, and if Benjamin/Norwood can handle the slot, then it's up to Mass, and if he fails, I assume we'll pick up another WR next year...
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?
Well, Hill is a big fast guy without a great deal of experience. Obviously they thought that Schwartz was a better pick in the 2nd than Hill was.
Sanu looks a lot like guys we already have .... 6'1" ... 211# ..... runs a 4.67 40 ....... maybe they didn't want "just one more of the same" ......
Childs is another "one of the same" type receivers. Plus, could we have a pair of Gregs at WR? We already could have a pair of Joshes ........
Can't overload on these things ....

Most of our receivers are in that "bigger receiver" mold.
It's obvious that the Browns wanted a smaller guy with elite speed. Right or wrong, that's what they went after.

Cribbs and Norwood had plenty good %s. Little was not good, MoMass was worse.
They all had the same QBs throwing to them. So, while some of their troubles is certainly on Colt, some of it is on themselves and they will have to improve in order for our offense to improve by any great stretch as well.
