If you look at jfan's and blue's responses to your question, you'll pretty much have my answer, too.
It's been pretty easy to have these discussions here, as most folk are both frank and civil in their exchanges. Go to, oh- say Politico.com, and it's quite ugly almost every time race becomes a topic. I can read about one page of discourse and I have to leave- it's too damned depressing to think that these posts come from my fellow citizens.
Heeeeey!!! No more stretched thread!!!

I believe the previous few posts are correct. The biggest factor being that most people don't want to have a dialogue... They want to cling to their overly simplistic views of the world because to actually LISTEN to opposing views might challenge your beliefs.

This stretched-out thread is killing me.
I believe you're half right. I think the other half is simply that some people are afraid to do it. People are very afraid to leave their comfort zones. For most people, having a conversation like that is leaving his/her comfort zones.

Sadly, this applies to just about any topic regarding politics, religion, race, social issues, etc. People would rather defend their point to the extreme rather than bend a little or admit they're wrong. Instead of finding solutions, they're looking for that "gotcha" moment to make the other side look bad.

I tried to bring up race in a thread on here a couple weeks ago and people got all in a tizzy. I still stand by my comments.
Anything that is a race is not a sport.

Yeah, certainly there's a bias in everything, and while I think race is certainly a bias that exists with Obama, it's not the defining bias, IMO.
When you look at Obama, you see a host of people who dislike him for a host of things that aren't really even accurate. It's a dislike of an idea, more than a person, which leads to all of the nonsense about him being some sort of radical socialist who is transforming America ... when in reality, he's been pretty status quo. He's not much different than his predecessors.

I cannot fathom how anyone - other than you - can come to that conclusion.

Based on your biased and limited view of the president and politics, that makes sense.

Phil looks at us as a country having certain laws already established, and if the President simply follows the laws, then he is "the same as the guy before him". Bush and Obama have some similarities, such as Immigration policy ...... but they have some major differences as well. (specifically in the area of income tax policy and loopholes, and certain social spending areas) Further, as far as differences between the parties, the biggest one to come to mind is in the area of healthcare. The Republicans wanted to have tort reform, (which the Democrats, and President, stridently oppose) open competition, and expanded plans, including individual health savings accounts. The Democrats largely opposed all of those. The deficit, while growing, grew at a far, far slower rate under Bush when the Republicans had control of the Congress. One can look at the differences in the budgets between the 2 parties for major differences in spending levels and priorities. There are almost certainly other differences that I'm not going to go to all of the work of documenting, but those aren't "big enough" for PDR. Unless one candidate is a socialist, and the other a fascist, then, to him, they really aren't all that different. I've been watching some videos on Scientology, and on certain supposed "Secret Societies" ... and some of them might have some compelling nature, if the "reporters" involved weren't so far out in left field. I forget the name of the one reporter, but he was all over secret societies, and how they controlled the world ...... and then I googled him afterwards, and he also believes that aliens are living in human form, and are controlling these secret societies. Scientology believes that all science fiction writing is some bizarre form of forgotten history, and that the galaxy is actually trillions of years old ...... and that we are all reborn onto different alien planets, and into different alien forms ..... or some such stuff. It was actually pretty strange. Anyway ..... I can imagine PDR sitting around, watching this stuff, and going "See! I knew I was right!!!!!"

I hear you.
I believe that anyone who claims to NOT see a discernable difference between the two candidates is living in a dream world.
Neither is perfect and both have warts...they have similar stances in some areas.
But the differences are glaring and significant enough to clearly draw a line between the two.
There are two - very different - choices in this election.
