they already extended Santana. got him for 1 post-arb year (which is why he's signed through 2017 now).

They tried to work on Santana's batting mechanics and got him all screwed up.

Evidently they have told him to go back to his toe tap and other timing mechanisms that he used before. He did hit the HR after they told him to go back to doing things his way.

He hit that homer right handed. He is still fairly balanced from that side of the plate. From the left though, he's lunging at the ball as he swings. No balance = no power.

he's always had a loopy swing from the left-side. the difference is that he was able to make contact last year and a push alot of those balls for hits and had a higher BA/OBP but lower power. this year, he SOs a ton more from that side too and now has about the same BA/OBP but lower power.

The Browns have done a horrible job of running their team, and we have banged on them for every bad move. If the Browns raised players as good as the Indians had with Cliff Lee and CC Sabathia, they sure as hell wouldn't let them go. Yes, I know the NFL and MLB are different, but as a fan, why should that matter to me?

That's a very good way to put it... The Browns have had trouble finding the right players, that's for sure, but the players that have that produce, they have found a way to keep... Joe Thomas, DQ, Cribbs, Dawson... there just aren't enough of them.

According to multiple sources, pitcher Roberto Hernandez is expected to soon be receiving a new visa from the State Department, which would allow the right-hander to return to the United States. Hernandez remains in his native Dominican Republic, where he continues to train at Cleveland's baseball academy.

I now believe the Indians should be sellers, not buyers, at the deadline. We are not just "a pitcher" or "a hitter" away from being a legit contender. Further, I don't think we have any untouchables. What we have are some core players I'd like to hang onto, but not that many. Brantley, Cabrera, Kipnis, Masterson, Perez, Pestano, Chisenhall, and maybe some of our younger arms like McAlister, Carrasco, and Gomez. Everyone else can and should go. The only problem with that is I have no faith in Shapiro and Antonetti to make effective trades. Maybe they should be replaced by a real baseball man before we do another teardown.

I just went to the Indians game tonight. Awesome fireworks after the game. Best I have ever seen and I'm not exaggerating.

I know it is a long season but I put my opinion of the whole Indians season on tonights game. Had they won I would have felt like we should be buyers. We lost and now I agree we should be sellers - especially since there are so many buyers right now we might be able to score some really good prospects before desperate teams dump them all. I got to the game one inning late and missed the entire offense for the whole night (a solo shot by Choo). This team isn't one bat away or one pitcher away from being a contender. Detroit just got the lead and I don't see them giving it up now.

I'm glad football season is here. I would rather watch training camp or the Aeros than watch any more tribe this year. Oh yeah, did I mention my beers cost $10 each? Lol

I saw them coming out of the Gladiators game at the Q (which I'm sure was infinitely more exciting than the Indians tonight). The fireworks were amazing.

Going to the game tomorrow...hope it isn't a snoozefest.

The Indians sit 3-1/2 games out of first, in 3rd place, so some fans might say its too soon to throw in the towel. But, IMO, they fail the eyeball test to be viewed as true contenders. The bats are silent and we have only one starter with an ERA under 5. The bullpen is only a factor if the starters leave them with a lead. We have some guys that other teams might value ... Choo (whose agent is Steve Boros) is not going to re-sign after next year - may as well trade him the year before his walk year (it worked out so well with Cliff Lee). Carlos Santana should be dangled - he can't hit and he's a crappy catcher, and worst of all, he reportedly won't accept coaching or instruction. Maybe someone will buy into the mirage and hype of his 27 HR's last year. Others like Ubaldo, Lowe, Hannahan could be viewed as valuable late season pickups by true contenders with a need at their positions. The Indians minor league system has a critical need at the corner OF positions, at C, and of course, starting pitching - largely due to the poor drafts of Shapiro, Antonetti, and company. I question their talent assessment skills so the trades would be risky, but as constituted, I don't see this team going anywhere but down.

well, at least they are getting the washed up version of him. still, the fact that they can take Gardner being on the DL pretty much the whole year and find an okay speed replacement for him (which they needed) is frustrating.

It doesn't even have anything to do with the Yankees money. The Mariners are paying pretty much his entire salary for the rest of the season.

Ichiro had 10/5 rights and could choose whatever team he wanted to go to.

as I've state before, I fully expect the Dolans' to sell the team by 2015 (when the lease expires) and the new owners to give it a 3yr trial (with backdoor dealing) and move the team by 2018 or 2021.

The current lease doesn't expire until 2023.

http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20080806/FREE/767534704/1022

The fans are never the problem in Cleveland. There is not a more loyal group for baseball, football, or basketball in the country.

The Indians may never sell out 400+ games again, but fan devotion in Cleveland should never be questioned.

Cleveland fans have proven, in an overwhelming manner, that they will support good teams. - Ask Dan Gilbert, Randy Lerner, and former Indians FO people.

I'm not upset about the Sabathia trade, seeing as how he was going to be a free agent at the end of the '09 season anyway.

Granted, attendance could be better, but lets not lose sight of what happened a couple years ago, when Indians Brass spit in our faces. In 2010, Cliff Lee had 1.5 years left on his contract, and Victor Martinez didn't want to go anywhere. Rather than keep these two guys to speed-up rebuilding, ownership traded both of them away as part of a salary dump. - A complete show of disrespect to the fans. - What an awful time.

Fans do not like the Dolans. Until we get another ownership group in here, or until this team is +10 games in the division, we will not see good attendance on a consistent basis.

The Indians have a darn good core right now. It's time that ownership goes out and buys a legit starter and a couple bats.

good. i didn't realize they extended the lease to 2023 already (back in 2008). that is a good thing.

however, there is every right to question the fans. MLB attendance is up in many places, the Indians have been mediocre, but the attendance has been terrible.

Quote:

yes, Cleveland fans are fair weather fans for baseball. in fact, they not only are fair weather, but demand a dominant (among best in MLB) to show up to watch the Tribe.

for the Browns, no doubt Cleveland fans are the best.
for the Cavs, LeBron stoked the fire and actually kept it stoked by leaving (fans coming together). Yes, Gilbert has helped.

oh, just a legit starter and a couple bats. and none of those mediocre ones I presume. and, we need to sign Choo to an extension (he's going to fetch $15-20mil/year). ok, just ~$50mil/year on the open market (and that's a low number). no problem

Don't look now, but the Tigers just got better.

I have a feeling this series is it for the tribe. It feels like last year when we came into a huge series ready to show that we belonged and they just destroyed us.

We get Fister, Scherzer, and Verlander. If we get swept, it's time to sell. Quite honestly, we should probably be selling anyways.

Tigers get Anibal Sanchez and Omar Infante from Marlins
Aaron Gleeman Jul 23, 2012, 5:45 PM EDT

While the baseball world waits to see if Ryan Dempster to the Braves actually happens, the Marlins and Tigers have pulled off an even bigger trade.

Jon Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that Miami is sending right-hander Anibal Sanchez and infielder Omar Infante to Detroit. According to his colleage Ken Rosenthal the Marlins will get pitching prospect Jacob Turner, plus minor leaguers Rob Brantly and Brian Flynn. And the two sides have also agreed to swap competitive balance draft picks, which marks the first time those have been included in a trade.

Sanchez is a significant upgrade for the Tigers’ rotation, but he’s also an impending free agent set to cash in big on the open market at age 28. He has a 3.75 ERA in 132 career starts, including a 3.94 ERA and excellent 110/33 K/BB ratio in 121 innings this season. And now he joins a rotation that already had Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, Doug Fister, and Rick Porcello.

Infante was originally signed by the Tigers as an 18-year-old out of Venezuela in 1999. They traded him to the Cubs for Jacque Jones in 2007 and since then he’s also played for the Braves and Marlins. Infante has hit for more power than usual this season, but his .754 OPS is relatively close to his .714 career mark and he figures to play mostly second base for Detroit.

Turner was promoted from Triple-A last week because the Tigers needed rotation help, but after three starts they decided he was worth parting with to bring in a proven veteran like Sanchez. Turner was the No. 9 overall pick in the 2009 draft and ranked as one of MLB’s top 30 prospects in 2010, 2011, and this season according to Baseball America. He’s widely considered one of the top 10-15 pitching prospects in baseball.

At age 21 he may not be quite ready to thrive in the majors, but the Marlins did well to get a legitimate top pitching prospect in exchange for an impending free agent and a good but not great infielder. And obviously the Tigers, after spending all that money on Prince Fielder this offseason and finally taking over first place in the AL Central last week, are fully in win-now mode.

Unfortunately, the Indians have made a lot of trades in the past few years and really don't have a lot left to trade away. It's going to be hard to find a trade partner unless we want to trade Tomlin .... and I'm not sure that helps us.

That's why they should be selling, well that and the fact that there are more fatal flaws in this team then i can count on one hand.

You have your two, obvious blue chippers in Choo and C. Perez. We would get a haul for either.
Then you have guys who could help a contender, but really do us no good: Hannahan, Lopez, Kotchman*.

( *Obviously you can't trade all three of them)

I've seen that we have 11 arbitration guys next year, that will eat up most of the Hafner/Sizemore money coming off the books. We STILL will have to sign a 1B and LF. Choo will get 15 Million per year in a year and a half. The problem is, they can't fix it next either. Their contention plan is sign a bunch of nobody's and pray that one of them has a career year. The season is too long for that. The more talented teams win in the end. Smoke and mirrors do not work.

I guess what ticks me off the most is we trade for Ubaldo, and the FO is "We're all in right NOW!!!". Then, nothing. Crickets. Contention now my ass. All in does not have Johnny Damon in LF. Or Aaron Cunningham on the roster.

I really feel bad for Manny Acta. He's going to take the heat, but in reality he's trying to manage a team, that top to bottom, just isn't very good.

Not to rain on your parade, but Perez is a relief pitcher. Teams rarely get hauls for relief pitchers. The Indians would be lucky to get a B-level prospect for Perez.

How about the Indians send Choo on over to the Reds because 1) He completely crushes the reds 2) He would be amazing at the top of our order.

My dream lineup using Dusty's rules:

Choo- a Lefty high OBP machine to put in front of Votto
Phillips- Much better hitter when he's not trying to be a 4 hole hitter
Votto- Obvious
Ludwick-Guy has been on fire and Dusty requires going lefty Righty..etc
Bruce-Should be higher especially when gets hot but Dusty likes R-L-R
Rolen/Frazier
Cozart-Where he belongs
Hannigan/Mes
Pitcher

Reds become serious contenders with that lineup or well really anything that moves two higher OBP guys in front of Votto instead of the blackholes of Stubbs and Cozart.

A b-level prospect for a multi-time all star closer with a very good conversion rate...

Just off the top of my head, the Astros just got 4 players for Bret Myers. They got Michael Bourne and a couple other of others for Brad Lidge last year. Perez is much better then both of them. Papelbon (?sp) didn't get all that cash in the off season because closers are everywhere.

Let's just say we're going to have to agree to disagree on this one. I highly doubt anythings going to happen anyways. Even though I think selling is the correct thing to do, it would a PR disaster.

Honestly I would help pack Stubbs. If I was Walt I would tell you to pick one of Corcina/Stephenson and the deal's done.My only concern is who plays center if the Reds do get Choo. I know Choo is mainly a corner outfield has he ever played Center? Some think Bruce could do it, but that would be my concern.

There's a reds rumor that Phillies offered Victorino for Ondrusek straight up and Reds balked which is a slight head scratcher. With Massett coming back and Hoover in the minors I think trading Ondrus. wouldnt hurt the team. With that said it was probably about money and lack of team control.

IIRC, Choo played in CF sparingly last year. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either.

the only reason I included Stubbs is the complete dearth of OFers in teh system and just having a guy hold down the fort the rest of the year. if he somehow lives up to his initial hype, then hey, great for the Tribe.

we'd definitely take Stephenson over Corcina. if we only got one (which is more likely), then I'd definitely want a couple 'B+' prospects as well (since you never know with pitchers).

------------------

Choo hasn't played CF for us. He has the speed (and a rifle for an arm), so I think he could handle it, but we leave him in his corner where he's comfortable.

The All-Star game is a joke. The saves statistic is a joke.

Quote:

The Astros got two players and a pÀayer to named later. Neither of the players they got are real prospects. They will be lucky if either makes it to the big leagues as a starting pitcher.

Quote:

Huh? The Astros traded Bourne to the Braves last year. Lidge was traded to the Phillies for Michael Bourne in 2007. When Bourne was traded he was a B-level prospect.

Quote:

Perez is much better then both of them.

He might be better than Myers. Not much better. No. Lidge was probably better in 2007.

Quote:

Papelbon (?sp) didn't get all that cash in the off season because closers are everywhere.

No. He got that contract because one GM overvalued a dumb statistic and drastically overpaid a player. Papelbon is now the owner of one of the worst contracts in baseball. No closer is worth the money he got. And yes, closers are everywhere. See: Rodney, Fernando.

Quote:

Let's just say we're going to have to agree to disagree on this one.

No. You are wrong. I am right. The best thing Perez has going for him is that he is under team control for a few more years. Also, teams trading for Perez likely won't be using him as a closer. Let's say the Reds trade for Perez, do you think he will closer over Chapman?

Book is still out on Carrasco, but we got taken to the cleaners, the fact that some of their prospects that we didn't get, haven't panned out doesn't make it any better.

Shapiro got his clock cleaned. It's amazing how this guy gets a free pass.

Philly then turned around and got less for Lee from the M's.

Seattle got the "most" for Lee trading him to division-rival Rangers (though Smoak has been a bust for them and was just sent back to AAA).

Really, trading Lee netted nearly nothing, which is as crazy as the fact a very recent AL Cy Young winner was traded 3 times in 2 seasons w/o his pitching dropping off or being injured.

=================

and, yes, it does matter how the prospects turn out. our FO being able to determine and target other team's prospects is the one thing that has kept us afloat (Choo, Asdrubal, Santana, Masterson, etc.). so, if we get Carrasco and he turns out better than Happ, then it's a win for our FO on that end.

I know a lot of series/games are important at this point of the season....but to me, this series against the Tigers is going to really say a lot.

The Tribe is 4 games out, have been playing cold and the Tigers are red hot. if Cleveland is going to stay close, they HAVE to take at least 2 of 3.
