Cleveland Browns appear no closer to deal with top picks Trent Richardson and Brandon Weeden Published: Saturday, July 21, 2012, 12:40 AM Updated: Saturday, July 21, 2012, 9:52 PM By Mary Kay Cabot, The Plain Dealer The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- There's been no movement yet on a deal for No. 3 overall pick Trent Richardson even though the two players drafted ahead of him, Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III, have signed their four-year deals, a league source said. Offset language is believed to be the only real issue with Richardson's contract, because the total amount of the deal and signing bonus are pretty well set under the new rookie slotting system. The contract will also be fully guaranteed. Richardson will receive about $20.4 million over four years, including a signing bonus of about $13.4 million. The problem for the Browns is that neither Luck, the first overall pick, nor Griffin received offset language in their contracts. Offset language allows the team that drafted a player to save some money in the event the player is released and signs with another team while still owed money by his original team. For instance, if the Browns owed Richardson $4 million and he was released and signed with another team for $3 million, the Browns would only owe Richardson $1 million -- the difference between what they owed him and his salary with his new team -- if they were able to get offset language in the rookie contract. Without the offset language, they'd owe Richardson $4 million no matter what another team paid him. Richardson's agent, Jimmy Sexton, secured a deal Friday for No. 7 overall pick Mark Barron of the Buccaneers that contained no offset provision. Barron received a fully guaranteed deal worth $14.5 million, The Browns and Sexton have not talked lately, but things should heat up soon now that Barron's deal is done and because rookies are due to report Tuesday and take the field for the first time on Wednesday. Browns General Manager Tom Heckert said last week that he expects Richardson and No. 22 overall pick Brandon Weeden to be in on time, but didn't specify if he meant by the start of rookie camp or when veterans report Friday. The holdup in Weeden's case is that he's seeking to have all four years of his rookie deal guaranteed. Most players drafted at the lower end of the first round have three years guaranteed and a partial guarantee for the fourth season. Weeden will receive a four-year deal worth about $8.1 million. (Editor's Note: Earlier versions of this story incorrectly said the deal would amount to $8.1 million a year. My apologies for the error, and for the delay in correcting it -- Sports Editor Daryl Kannberg) With the Browns counting on him to be their starting quarterback, he can ill-afford to miss much camp time. web page

The Browns rookies are due in camp July 24 with veterans due July 26...today is July 22...I do expect both contracts to get done in the next day or two.
With Luck and Griffin signed, the Browns have the a guideline for the upper levels of Richardson's potential contract to use. The Browns might be waiting to see what the #4,5 and 6 draft picks sign for.
Below is a list of the contract status of the 2012 first round picks.

I'm not so worried about TRich getting signed. In fact, I'd like him to have limited reps anyways this preseason. On the other hand, Weeden MUST be there by Tuesday. He can't afford to miss any reps. If either side allows him to miss any time, then it is a grave mistake.
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

The Browns have very little leverage here and it's time they wake up to that fact. They have placed all of their eggs into the "Weeden basket" and it's time they pony up.
People can say that yes, he is the #22 pick and according to that, the Browns are in the right here.
But the fact is, he was drafted to be the franchise QB of the future and you have the "QB bump". They would look like fools going into training camp claiming he's the future, yet holding up the future over a few mil. in garauntees.
It will get done and they'll either meet Weedens demands or sweeten the pot some other way. But it will get done.

I think we may see both sign tonight. Heckert always seems to have a thing for doing contracts on Sunday. Both need to get in here for the start of rookie days, Richardson to avoid injury and Weeden to start getting in the extra practice time with Gordon, Benjamin and the rest of the rookie receivers.

No big deal.
This front office has done this ever since they have got here. And I'm pretty sure they have always got their guys in on time.
It's probably 30 minutes to discuss terms followed by a couple of hours to write up the contract. No biggie.

Wasn't Phil Taylor a few days late getting into camp last year due to the contract not being done?

RB is the easiest position in the league to transition to as a rookie (kickers notwithstanding) so that doesn't worry me. On the other end of the spectrum is Weeden, who needs every second he can get, and even then he'll be lost until his second season.
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***

As others have said I'm not worried about Trent unless he goes several weeks without being signed, but I would like to see Weeden in camp on time... I also wouldn't be surprised if they wait to announce that they both get signed at the same time...
hopefully we'll hear good news today!

Personally I think the whole thing is a joke. An offset clause? Give me a break! You trade three picks to move up one spot and then you want to give yourself a safety valve in the contract as if he may not be what you thought when you drafted him? Seriously? Sure, maybe he blows his knee out, but even in that case it would take almost four years to see if he can recover from the injury or not. So what is the point? Just typical Cleveland Clowns antics! To me the organizations desire for the offset clause would be insulting to a highly priced draft pick. As far a Weeden goes....8 million? Big deal, pay the guy and get him in camp.

From a business stand point. I can see how the Browns may want to push it til the last minute to give them a small edge in getting whatever they want..

I wouldn't be surprised if the browns are under pressure from some other NFL teams to not cave, especially weeden's spot. The 22 spot previously didn't have a fourth-year guarantee, and if it does this year, it will next year.

As of yet, there isn't a holdout. Some may be jumping the gun a bit?

If Weeden isn't in camp when the vets show up, that would be the time I would start to squabble. But in reality, I don't see that happening.
Actually, I think the owners "hoped" this would end holdouts. But the problem seems to be, that they got their way in terms of salary structure, but now wish to be greedy in other areas.
At some point the players have to have some say and leverage. The scales have already been tipped in the owners favor and the players are simply trying to use the only tools left at their disposal. I don't blame them....

Wouldn't that be considered collusion and be an illegal business practice? But who could really prove it, right?

I don't know why everyone is making a big deal about this, especially the media (well, I can see why, purely just for news).
The Rookie Wage scale had pretty much set nearly every aspect of the deal except the off-set clause. So, from this stand point, 90% of the deal is already done.
We all know that Trent Richardson's going to get a 4 year, fully guaranteed deal with no offset. He's the #3 overall pick. Last year, the top draft picks got it, and they are getting it this year. But from a business standpoint, there is NO BENEFIT to sign Trent Richardson right now other than "ensuring he is signed" before camp. But, that's not to say Richardson could do something stupid from now and to the start of camp. To protect their investments, the Browns are going to wait until a day or so before camp, or even the first day of camp before talking to Richardson.
As long as Richardson is there for the start of training camp with the veterans, everything will be fine.

I don't care too much about TRich getting to camp on time. I think he might be late for the rookie thing but be there when the vets report. I do want Weeden signed on time. The Browns can not afford for him to miss any snaps.
I can't believe people criticized the Browns for not dumping Colt by now. It would be dumb to do anything with Colt until you get Weeden signed and also make sure he will be ready for the season. If Weeden gets signed and looks as good as advertised, then you can think about what you want to do with Colt.

There is the public perception among people and other players that the Browns FO is either cheap or hard to deal with, and considering how hard it is for us to attract FAs anyway, that's not helping. When the majority of the first round is signed, the scale is pretty much set, and 2 of the players not signed are both Browns, it just gives off a bad vibe about how this organization negotiates.

I agree, but it could also just be that neither side really feels the true pressure until put up against the wall of training camp. That our staff doesn't mind going up right to the day.
As long as they are in camp on time, then I don't think it really matters. But, they sure are making this a closer call than it needs to be.

I feel that many people seriously do not wish to consider this factor. It would be nice not to see so much contradictions in the actions of this FO.
On one hand they tell us how much faith they have in their selections then turn around and try to penny pinch on signing them.
I would think it would seriously make a huge difference if they backed up their words with some action in signing our rookies without going right down to the wire. Not only to the public, but to FA's and and the youth that does come in here.
At that early of an age, I certainly wouldn't feel obligated nor feel some since of desire to stay with a team that said I was their future then tried to beat me up on my rookie contract.

It's a business. You don't give up anything more than you have to in a business negotiation. That's hard to watch when it's your favorite football team but that's the reality of it. They'll get the players into camp more or less on time.
Weeden is a bigger concern to me. He knows that this is likely the only contract he'll ever see considering his advanced age. And he's been around pro sports long enough to realize he's nothing more to the Browns than a number. He'll push hard for as much as he can get. Don't blame him a bit because the Team would take what they could from him if he lets them. That's just life in the NFL.

I don't know about that. I do believe you are right if this were a business that wasn't in the media spotlight. I mean let's face it, most businesses do not have their contract signings and negotiation covered by the national media an several fronts.
At some point showing a willingness to commit to your players as much as you've talked them up does pay dividends. On the flip side, showing an unwillingness to do so hurts your public perception as well.
When the people in charge say one thing and then seemingly act in a different manner, maybe you're really costing yourself in the long run.......

Considering Brees just turned 33, Peyton Manning is 36 and I could go on, I don't reaaly understand the math on this being "his only big contract" if he plays well in the NFL.
A four year contract would make him 31 when a four year deal would be concluded.

Yeah, I mentioned that fact too after I mocked Weeden to us at pick 22.

Cleveland Browns meeting today with Trent Richardson's agent, deal is close, source says Published: Monday, July 23, 2012, 4:19 PM Updated: Monday, July 23, 2012, 4:54 PM Mary Kay Cabot, The Plain Dealer By Mary Kay Cabot, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND -- The Browns are meeting today with the agent for No. 3 overall pick Trent Richardson, and the deal is close, a source told the Plain Dealer today. Richardson is in town ready to sign the deal and begin practicing. The only outstanding issue is the offset language that the Browns would like in the contract. Such language would prevent them from having to pay the full guaranteed amount in the event Richardson signs with another team. The No. 1 and No. 2 overall picks, Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin, do not have offset language in their contracts, meaning they'll get their full fours of guaranteed money regardless if they remain with their original team or not. Richardson's agent Jimmy Sexton also managed to keep offset language out of the deal for No. 7 overall pick Mark Barron. No. 6 overall pick Morris Claiborne also signed today with no offset language. The highest pick with offset language is No. 10 Stephon Gilmore, so Richardson has a good case. Richardson stands to make a fully guaranteed contract worth about $20.4 million, with about a $13.4 million signing bonus. Browns rookies are due to report in Berea tomorrow night and take the field for the first time on Wednesday. Veteran report Thursday night and begin practicing Friday. The first practice open to the public is Saturday at 8:45 a.m. The Browns have also not yet signed No. 22 overall pick Brandon Weeden, who's seeking all four years guaranteed. He's set to make about $8.1 million over the four years. Browns general manager Tom Heckert said recently he expects both Richardson and Weeden to be in on time. web page

LMAO! Shocker, a deal is close, but the same issue still remains. Off-Set language, which the Browns are not going to get. TRich will be signed today, I'd bet on it.

This is the kind of stuff that ticks me off. We are dorking around over 1 years worth of money with a guy we drafted #3, and are worried about having to pay him if we cut him.
First, we aren't going to cut him, and then, if we do, we have way more to worry about then the maybe 4-5 mil we would owe him.
Maybe eight 1st rounders aren't signed, and we have two of them. Sorry, people can complain about players or agents all they want, but this sure looks like the Browns are a nickel and dime organization.....over stupid stuff.
If these guys start to miss time and we have to listen to Shurmer talking about how they are falling behind and how we can only coach the guys in camp, I might drive up to Berea and shove a bowling ball in his mouth.
Well, not really, but that's what I'd feel like doing.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

One thing I would mention is that if he doesn't have a bowling ball in his mouth he'd likely tell you, " Hey, I'm not the guy who is low-balling our first round draft picks".
Not to worry yet, though. I'll bet they're both signed by Friday and that's all that really matters.

Pick me up on your way Peen. I have some old bowling shoes I'd like to stick somewhere in Berea myself.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Browns get deal done with Trent Richardson Posted by Mike Florio on July 23, 2012, 9:45 PM EDT Trent Richardson AP As expected, the Browns have worked out a contract with the third overall pick in the draft. Running back Trent Richardson has agreed to terms, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. The contract pays Richardson a signing bonus of $13.341 million, along with base salaries of $390,000 in 2012, $1.321 million in 2013, $2.252 million in 2014, and $3.184 million in 2015. Like all first-round picks, the team holds an option for the fifth-year. The Browns will be able to retain Richardson’s rights for 2016 by offering the average of the ten highest paid running backs in 2015. The contract is fully-guaranteed, with no offset language. The Browns moved up from the fourth pick to No. 3 to get Richardson, whom they hope will have an instant impact on the team’s running game — in turn opening up the passing game. To get the most out of the running game and the passing game, the Browns need to get their other first-round pick signed. Quarterback Brandon Weeden, the 22nd pick in the draft, reportedly wants his four-year deal to be fully guaranteed. It’s a fairly smart move, given that there could be a new regime in Cleveland by 2015 — and Weeden could be getting the same treatment that 2010 third-rounder Colt McCoy is about to get. Linky

Great news!! Does Weeden and Richardson have the same agency? Weeden may not be to far behind if both are with CAA, but I highly doubt his 4 years is fully guaranteed.

C'mon now, let's get Weeden done and get this show on the road.
