Winslow: ''I'm good, very good''
Zac Jackson, Staff Writer
03.20.2007
Kellen Winslow got at least a little bit of his much needed, much desired time away.

But being back on the rehab trail hasn't drained Winslow's energy or enthusiasm. And not only is Winslow still focused on returning to health, he thinks new Browns' offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski can help him top his record-setting 2006 season when he does.

"I'm good, very good," Winslow said Monday evening, speaking from his Cleveland-area home. "I got some real good news when Coach Chud came back here, and he's going to be real good for the offense. He's going to get everybody on the same page.

"That is a blessing. And I'm excited to get healthy and get to work."

There's probably not much comfortable about some of the rehab exercises Winslow has been doing since undergoing surgery on his right knee January 30. But he does have a comfort level inside Browns Headquarters with the medical staff he's been working with after coming back last offseason from a severe knee injury suffered in a May 1, 2005 motorcycle accident.

He has a similar comfort level with Chudzinski, who was Winslow's offensive coordinator and tight ends coach for the three years Winslow spent at the University of Miami and the Browns' tight ends coach in 2004, Winslow's rookie season.

"I definitely have a feel for him, for what kind of coach he is and what he wants to do," Winslow said. "But he's going to bring some new stuff in. It's going to be good.

"I think he's going to want me lining up in a lot of places -- I like that."

Winslow caught a franchise record 89 passes last season while battling through a sore knee and decided on surgery after the season, about 18 months after his initial surgery following the accident.

He said Monday he's been off crutches for nearly two weeks and has been following his rehab program closely.

"I really just started with concentrating on the little things," he said. "I'm following the program that our medical staff laid out for me before we decided to have the surgery. I first need to get the strength back in my leg, then progress from there. It's a step by step process, and my next step is running.

"But I am feeling great. As far as my rehab goes, I am ahead of schedule. I'll be back by training camp, if not before."

Winslow said he's spent most of his time and energy rehabbing and relaxing with his teammates. He said his new Xbox 360 video game system has made him "a hockey guy -- I play with Calgary and Dallas, and I kick everybody's butt."

But Winslow plans to be a full-time football guy again soon. He said he was as surprised as anyone to hear of an Internet report that made its rounds Monday saying Winslow would miss the 2007 season.

"I don't even know where that came from - I don't know who said that," he said. "But I love to prove people wrong. That's fuel for me.

"I'll be back. People continue to count me out, and that lights my fire."

with as much as it's seemed that the FO has tried to make us think everything is worse than it actually is, I don't see them doing that...

You never know though

Well,he said he would be ready before the "rumor" and after the "rumor". So what he's saying has been consistant.

And the "rumor"? It was just a "rumor" IMO

What the......

We have 2 Topdawgs....

I was wondering why my Kentucky boy Topdawg was refering to board nazi's until I hit refresh......

Nevertheless, I can see the complex at Berea yesterday:

Intern: Mr. Savage, They uncovered the story that Winslow is done for the year from our secret microfracture surgery!

Phil: I'm going to eat Mary Kay for dinner!

Intern: No Mr. Savage, it was the OBR and "The Rizz"

Phil: Get that kid who took the fall for the demise of the old website chatroom...Jackson...yeah, Zac Jackson to spin a story quoting Kellen saying he's coming back next year!

Intern: Will do sir!

Phil: And keep Uncle Randy off the TV set, he's already blew my cover on Jamarcus, I don't need him commenting on Kellen. Tell him Bill Applegate from WOIO is badmouthing his soccer team, that should occupy him for the time being!

It IS damage control.

But, I don't think it's spin. Why would Winslow himself say he's ahead of schedule and he'll be back by training camp if not sooner?

If there was spin going on, it'd be like the Bentley situation where everyone is tight-lipped.

Take it from someone who's majoring in PR, outright lying about something like this would be TERRIBLE publicity for the Browns, and considering the Savage/Romeo regime has been pretty honest, I don't see them lying about this.

My vote is Braylon started it. I'm sure these months with no Braylon headlines in the papers must be getting to him by now. Almost time to take another helicopter ride or buy a stuntbike.

Yesterday everybody was all uptight because of the RUMOR about him not playing in '07. Today the guy comes out to clear the air and people call it "spin".

IMO K2 is doing exacty what everyone wanted himto do when he was hurt last year. He is clearing the air of rumors and letting the fans know where he is at.

If this were Savage or anybody but Winslow speaking, I could see where the doubts would be more reasonable. But the rumor was floated, and immediately he comes out and tells everyone where he's at in his rehab. I personally think this shows how he is maturing and how much he is interested in what the fans think. In the end, isn't that what everyone wants?

If the player comes out and says he's fine, why is it so tough for some of you to just believe him and let it go at that...

I was just thinking about this,,,,,,

Ok, a reporter comes out on OBR or somewhere and says he's heard that KW2 will miss the entire 07 season,,,,

Everyone gets up in arms and is screaming and hoping that it isn't true...

Then KW2 talks to reporters and says,,,No No,,, that's bull, I'm fine, I'll be there,,

Instead of a sigh of relief,,, Some insist that he must be lieing,,,

What is wrong with you people

Maybe because that little, itty-bitty cleaning of scar tissue that we were told later became microfracture surgery? They've lied to us in the past, they'll do it again.

Oh for cryin out loud,,, I take it none of you have ever gone to a doctor thinking you had one thing only to come to find out it was more serious?

I went to the doctor with a back ache in 2000,,, they did some tests,,, didn't see anything,,, 6 months later they determined it was kidney cancer,,, got the kidney removed and now I'm fine.

I went for a check up last October with no symptoms of anything,,, they did a simple check of my abdoman where the kidney scare is,,,,they accidentally went a little lower on the test than expected,,, they found an anyurism (sp),.,

At first they thought it wasn't real big,,,nothing to worry about,, further testing showed that it was really very very large,,,, had the surgery december 1st,, painful recovery,,,but I'm fine now,, Did my doctor lie to me?

Do you think that never happens to athletes? Do you think that mistakes aren't made in the medical profession?

How do you know? What proof do you or anyone else have that Phil Savage or KW2 lied then or is lying now?

Again, are you saying they lied to us before because of something that Butch Davis did years ago,,,, if so,,, Get over it,,, Davis is long gone and Phil doesn't appear to be a liar,,,

Listen man, I'm happy that you were able to come back from all of that and that you're hopefully healthy again, I really am.

All I'm trying to say is, "Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me"

...And I don't really feel like getting fooled again. If he's out there July 28th or whatever it is at the beginning of camp in full pads, catching passes, etc. I'll be just as happy as the next guy. But if he isn't...

You guys got it wrong. From the other thread in Tailgate:

"There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again." —Nashville, Tenn., Sept. 17, 2002

Happy to help.

Greg Olsen, TE, Miami and/or Zach Miller, TE, Arizona State

it's obvious that we need a replacement for Winslow because of this surgery.

When KW2 starts talking to regular people (instead of treating them like crap on the bottom of his shoes) then maybe more fans will believe in him and listen.

Lets not trash The OBR for what they didn't report. This was a PFT rumor, that the people at the OBR have even said there wasn't significant backing to at the time.

So let me get this straight, you want Savage held responsible for what Carman and Butch did years ago,,,, Man that is totally and completely unfair...

I'm not exactly sure what you mean with Cutch thing,,, do you think they lied to you because he was scheduld to return last season but then couldn't because it ended up being more serious than first thought.. thus he was shelved for the year,... is that what you are referring too?

People can talk about Winslow's attitude and his comments in the media, but I'm glad as hell he's on our side. I personally love his attitude and work ethic and I wish there were more Browns that felt as passionate about football as Kellen does.

I hope he comes back in full force and has another outstanding year.
