I want a president that isn't afraid to take on the extremes of either party and do what's best for the majority of Americans no matter the political cost.

I believe you just described Ron Paul.

Probably did. and believe me, it won't be the first time I've voted for someone that doesn't have a chance in hell of winning.

You guys don't know this about me, but those that know be best know that I'm a fiscal conservative and a social liberal.

I absolutly believe we need to live within our means.. I absolutely believe we need to care for our elderly and our Veterans and the less fortunate among our society.

What that may mean is, that war can't get fought because we need to take care of things at home. that may mean that we completely throw out the tax code as it exists and maybe put in a different one that spreads the costs of running the country over EVERYONE not the middle class and the wealthy.

Maybe that means flat tax, or maybe a consumption tax or some mix of both.

I'm not an econ whizbang kid. I balance my books, I got an IRA, I'm not perfectly set for retirement, but I would have been had we not taken the hit we took in the last 5 or 6 years.. I was right on target.

But I'll be ok.. Being self employed, I know the pain of having to take care of yourself because frankly, nobody is going to help me. (at least I'm planning for no help. if I get it, cool, if not, so be it)

I understand the need for government. we can't survive without a body that sets the rules and ensures we live by them (that may not be the best way to put it, but you guys know what I mean)

I'm uncomfortable with a government that thinks it's ok to fight a war when we are going bust here at home. 'm uncomfortable with a government that thinks it's ok to give away billions to people that CAN work but won't work. (Culling them from the herd is the hard part but it can be done)

I have no problem giving my fellow American a hand UP,,, but I'm sick of the hand OUTS. some of us have felt a need or know a good person that has that actually deserved it. We all know the lazy ones too.

We all know folks who's jobs were sent off shore, but I bet there isn't one of us that want the company that sent them there rewarded. it's double dipping, they save on labor costs AND get tax breaks.. come on people.. you know that's not right.

We all know about GE that kept profits of shore in order to avoid income taxes here in the states.. It's legal, so nothing we can do about it. but maybe that law needs changed (part of the tax plan clean up I mentioned above)

hey, I love my fellow americans. I've never in my life heard of a people that when backed in corner, come together and fight to the death like we do. when we stand together, I'm telling you, we are unbeatable.

I believe that,, with all my heart. (yeah yeah I know,, yeah, I'm flying my american flag high,,, anyone got a problem with that,, come on over, we'll talk it over)

Can Ron Paul win.. No. Is he better than either choice we have before us.., oh my god sooooooooooooooo much better.

he's the closet thing we have to what I think my Ideal is. and he won't win because of the dumbest thing ever.. MISINFORMATION.

the other day, I got an email from a friend of mine. he hates Obama.. Ok,, I'm ok with that. But the email related to an article reportedly posted by the Associated Press. It revolved around the "birther" movement (I thought those guys were gone, but I guess not) anyway, basically it was calling Barack Obama not his real name but it was Barry something born in Indonsia or some such place and claimed to have irrefutable proof that he was not a US citizen.

So the AP saw this email floating around and the first thing they did was say..WOOOOO.. we didn't write that, we didn't post that, its not from us and it was examined and found to be completely false.

I get not liking Obama,, but damn it, don't be dumb enough to fall for that crap. Same thing about Romney. The Company that Romney worked for,, what was it, Bain Capital, did indeed buy some businesses, sell off the assets and shut them down, and yet, Romney was with the firm when "SOME" of that happened. But if you listen to the ads that the Obama campaign puts out, you'd think that Romney went around stabbing every company in the back.

It's simply not accurate. I don't like the man, but that's because I don't know who he is or what he stands for because he keeps changing his speech depending on who he's talking too.

Will the real Mitt Romney please stand up?

I don't know if it's even legal, but right now, if the vote were today, I'd either put in Ron Paul or write myself in,,, and believe me when I say this, I'm NOT qualified for the job

But neither the left or right would push me around,, They would however, push me out.

Until we the people decide that we're tired of lies and half truths designed to sway the uninformed masses,, and make it prison sentence worthy, we'll never have a person in office that will be worth diddly squat.

Of course, that's JMO

What happens to these batteries when they are spent?

Maybe we can store them in perpetuity in the abandoned, mineral rich coal mines that Obama won't allow us to harvest.

Lithium Ion batteries can be recycled, which is what the Tesla, Volt, Leaf, etc. all use.

That probably describes me as well.

Part of the reason i get so frustrated with politics is that its always arguing. Bush, Obama...republicans...democrats...Everyone points a finger, and nothing gets done.

We are a country divided by money, race, sex, religion, work-ethic...you name it. The folly in this is obvious to me, but not to most people. They were wronged, got dealt a crappy hand, or they have the answer...if only...

Bush was so bad....obama will save us....on and on. Entitlements, bail-outs, corruption, propaganda. war. Hand-outs. Nothing changes.

All of it comes down to one thing......Money=Power

There is not one person here who can look at the financial situation of the government and say it will be fine. I would have an ulcer if my finances were even remotely close to that bad.

Almost every problem that we have occurs for one simple reason. Fiat money and fractional reserve banking. i.e. The federal reserve...or any central bank for that matter.

Start a war? print money
More welfare? print money
bail-outs? print more

student loans, medicaid, obama-care...you name it.

Many noble ideas have simply become part of the problem, and the government has no business being involved.

I would encourage anyone to google "austrian economics" to understand what money is.

I don't even think taxes are the real issue...they are used to create class warfare so everyone keeps on arguing. No amount of tax increases would save us...ours is a spending problem.

All of these bailouts, entitlements, wars. Can you imagine if they actually had to come to us for the money? They wouldn't be doing any of it.

This country needs stable money.
Fix that and you will be headed in the right direction.

Social security...lol...yeah everyone will get it, with money that is worthless. So are you really getting it?

Give me back my money, and i'll give it to who I feel is worthy....the guy that wants to sit and do nothing....well it won't be him.

All these regulations are killing us too. Its great to say we need to protect the environment or something, but then you need to have the same rules for everyone.

You want to import goods....show us your environmentally friendly factory...show us some fair wages...otherwise you will either not import, or be taxed.

Thats not a ron paul thing, that's an "i'm pissed off thing"

The amount of mis-information is huge imo. The media is controlled by like 8 corporations. Obama and romney get most of their money from bankers. To me there is no difference between them.

The real romney? lol...sadly that IS the real romney...what do you want to hear today...

Back on topic ...... Why is it we can invent all this neat stuff but seem to miss out on the logical stuff? Like why can't the wheels, when their turning, charge the batteries, like the old field phones that you crank the handle on? It seems that if all 4 wheels are turning and each one is boosting a generator to charge the battery then you should never have to charge the batteries. I think that is how the Prius charges it's batteries and why you don't plug it in. Why not go full time charge?

If I'm not mistaken, the prious gets "charged" during braking - from the friction.

As to why we can't have each wheel charging batteries when in motion - the friction to get a "charge" would be greater than the energy it produced...........like, eh, I don't know how to say it. It would take more energy than it produced, how's that?

That's pretty much it.

The last time I read an article on improvements in battery technology, it actually contained information that elaborated on HOW it was going to accomplish the promise.
This, however, tells us absolutely nothing about the alleged breakthrough and the "story" itself is not new.

Meanwhile, this company is financed by the Energy Department and G.M. Ventures and received $4 million grant from Obama's ARPA-e program. The claim/promise of a breakthrough is a rehash of stories that ran back in February and March (just Google "Obaba Envia Systems" and you'll get the gist, there are articles from NY Times and WSJ). Envia gets to be claimed as a "success" simply by virtue of not having gone under, yet.

I'd bet my bottom dollar that this is back in the news now simply because it is election season.

For real news, here is something on Silicon Nanotube Lithium Ion batteries
And for 'Peen, here is a hint at future rapid charging car batteries from MIT.

Also, in the prius, the electric motors merely assist the gas engine in moving the car. In the volt, it's the electric motors making the car go, even when the gas generator has to kick on.

I asked this question some years back (not an engineer) and Purp I believe, said that pure braking and rotation of the wheels won't produce enough juice to run the car perpetually. so, even the prius has some kinda gas engine to either propel the car or act as a generator to recharge the batteries.

I a research program a couple years back where they had discovered a way to make solar cells that generated nearly 10x the power of current cells. If this works out and is true then imagine a solar panel as the roof of your car, that would recharge the batteries at anytime the sun is shinning, greatly reducing the need to plug in, and possibly extending the range.

It's been a long time since i took a physics class, but i think the problem is you have to understand energy.

What purp said is accurate. Many cars do charge the batteries when they brake.

Think of what happens when you turn on the ac in your car. It loses power, because the engine has to overcome spinning the ac compressor. Its no different than saying your gas mileage is better driving an empty truck as apposed to a truck pulling a boat.

Now in this situation you have a car powered by electricity. The stored energy in the battery travels thru wires. These wires (based on thickness) have a certain amount of resistance in them. As the energy travels thru them they get hot.

So in essence some of that energy is lost because it becomes 'heat'. Energy is then lost anywhere there is friction (like a bearing in an electric motor) or in a mechanical engine. This is why you get better gas mileage with clean oil because there is less friction. You basically have 'more' energy to turn your wheels, because you lost less to friction in the engine.

Basically you can never have 100% efficiency. Energy is lost all along the way.

Using the friction created when a generator kicks on to charge a battery is a good idea because that friction in essence causes drag which slows the vehicle, but it would never be enough to slow the vehicle totally, or suddenly like you would need for a car to function.

Then you have weight, and wind resistance. These things have to be overcome as well. So if you add more batteries (you add more weight) so your gains in more stored energy are offset some by more weight, and less weight for passengers or cargo.

If you try and make a car too light then at some point it becomes unsafe, or unrealistic as a vehicle.

A car will always have to overcome things like wind resistance, weight, gravity, and resistance in the mechanical and electrical parts.

It is imo impossible to make something that has 100% efficiency, since all those things 'use' energy.

You can use things like mechanical advantage to make something function better, but in the end you pay a price somewhere else. You could make a pulley system that can lift 1000lbs. with 1lb. of force exerted, but you would have to pull the rope 1000ft. to move the 1000lbs maybe a foot. So in reality you can move the weight, but on paper you still had to overcome all the friction in each pully as well.

What you did was amazing, but there is still energy lost on paper.

So why not just put a windmill inside where the radiator would go to generate the electricity?

Or pedals in front of every passenger (hey exercise and power generation) We can solve the weight problem in America and the battery range in one.

That would be something wouldn't it. They already have cars like that actually. But they are prototypes used in special events. I've seen them. Here is some pics.

Completely impractical at this point, but who knows what tomorrow will bring.

lol...you know if it were that easy someone would be doing it

As was mentioned, you would have to use things like solar, and wind power.

The whole problem imo, is that solar would add weight, and even if you could get a wind turbine in the car somehow, that would create more resistance affecting everything as well.

Newtons's laws of physics are what they are.

An object at rest tends to stay at rest, and object in motion tends to stay in motion. It takes energy to move something, and energy to stop it.

What do think this is....and entitlement?
