Actually, I was bummed that they didn't even give Sealy an interview for the HC job after Mangini was fired.
Am I perfect? No Am I trying to be a better person? Also no

I wouldn't be thrilled. There's been a LOOOT of hype around Gruden and I've always felt the 95% of it came from his facial expressions and fiery demeanor.
Agreed. That's where most of the love for Rob Ryan comes as well. Fun to watch, gets fired up, but our D has been soooo much better since he left

Well, let's say Shurmur is a goner.
Who would you want?
I mentioned it earlier as an off the top of my head suggestion to another poster about a future coach, but since Heckert ( assuming he is retained) and Banner have ties to Philly why not Juan Castillo? I don't know alot about him but experience coaching on both sides of the ball would seem to be valuable experince for a head coach.

this is the first confirmation I've seen on the matter and still, nothing from the Browns or Haslam or Holmgren or anyone else official.

Honest question,
Wouldn't it be pretty bad business etiquette by the Browns to do much speaking on the matter before the sale is even final?

His enept offense was the reason why he was fired, even though he had a winning record and had taken them to the playoff 3 out of his last 4 years there, IIRC.
And then Gruden came in and Tampa went to the SB, THEN what? Nothing, they spiralled downhill fast.
So the facts look more like Chuckie won the SB based on the foundation Dungy built, and won it on the defensive performance. Then Dungy went to Indy and won a superbowl with a new foundation.

I imagine Wiki is making assumptions here. BTW.. it was NOT my intention to make a controversial post.. my assumption is that the same as everyone elses. Banner is the next top executive of the Browns. Bye Mike.

... and remember, TB played Oakland in the Super Bowl. That's where Gruden came from and he knew what Oakland was going to do on just about every play because not much changed there after he left. That was a HUGE advantage for him.

Yeah, it seems like everybody is making those assumptions, and good money says they're accurate.
Just to be clear, my question was more about it not being in the best interest for the Browns to be commenting on the matter until the sale is final, not anything you said. I hope it didn't come across that way.

Yes, it is. It's not considered a valid source in research circles because the information hasn't been officially verified. Not that nothing on there is valid, but a lot of stuff isn't.

Philadelphia Eagles: Why Joe Banner Stepping Down Was the Right Move By Manav Khandelwal (Analyst) on June 7, 2012 Since Joe Banner was inserted as the president of operations for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2001, they've been one of the most successful franchises in the league. They've been to five NFC Championship games and even one Super Bowl, winning numerous division titles in between.
Two things Banner hasn't accomplished? Winning the Super Bowl and earning the respect of his players.
Banner and Andy Reid have had a constant power struggle for years, no matter what either has said over the last few hours. The difference between them? Reid is a "players' coach" and Banner has been called "unlikable" by half a dozen former Eagles, including Jeremiah Trotter, Brian Dawkins and Brian Westbrook.
Banner's "tough guy" negotiating style has left many Eagles—especially ones that were drafted and developed under Andy Reid—feeling bitter about their time as an Eagle. He's ostracized guys like Duce Staley in 2003, Brian Westbrook in 2005 and DeSean Jackson last season.
These issues have often spilled over into the season. Westbrook had one of his worst seasons in '05, as the team went a horrific 6-10. Last season, Jackson didn't seem like the DeSean of 2010, and the Eagles slipped out the gate on their way to a disappointing 8-8 finish. Banner's methods may be shrewd, but they haven't paid dividends on the field.
Westbrook, on with 97.5 the Fanatic hosts Tim McManus and Eytan Shander, even went so far as to say that Banner was fully a business entity and that he was unapproachable and not necessarily a guy the players liked.
Why did Banner always need to lay down the iron fist? Even with the salary cap, the Eagles were never afraid to throw money at big-name free agents.
In fact, until this past offseason, the Eagles rarely re-signed more players than they brought in; that isn't good for a locker room, especially one that has been as close to winning as Philadelphia has. The frustration is so large it could bubble over, which it has at points.
After all of that, we still have the "Gold Standard" comment and the ridiculously defensive statements Banner always makes about his team. Comparing the Eagles to the Steelers just isn't fair in any context, but to say that this team has been as successful is, unfortunately, not true.
Sure, the Eagles have similar numbers of playoff and later-round appearances, but the difference is pretty clear: The Steelers have two rings in the last decade; the Eagles don't.
Firing Banner, however, could go a long way to changing that.

Philadelphia Eagles replace team president Joe Banner June 07, 2012|By Sam Farmer The Philadelphia Eagles have replaced longtime team president Joe Banner, a move that underscores Banner's waning influence in recent months.
In March, the Times reported Coach Andy Reid had threatened to quit if he didn't get more personnel control. That was more in reference to how the team spent its money, rather than which players were on the roster. The Eagles adamantly denied that report.
Banner, who had been the right-hand man of Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie since the team was purchased in 1994, will be succeeded as president by Chief Operating Officer Don Smokenski. General Manager Howie Roseman will oversee the salary cap and contract negotiations. Banner has been appointed a strategic adviser to Lurie.
In a statement released Thursday by the Eagles, Lurie said: "There is no better executive than Joe Banner. We are making this announcement today because he is looking for a greater challenge, and in Don Smolenski, I have a highly regarded, very worthy successor as president of this team."
Banner, 59, told the Philadelphia Inquirer he hoped to "get involved with the world of buying and selling a sports team with the possibility of becoming part of a group that buys a team." web page

If Banner is as shrewd as these articles state and causes discontent amongst players and coaches, I wouldn't want him as an executive on our team. I hope Haslam does all of his homework.

Most dont realize that Banner is a contract lawyer. He is hated by players for his work on the CBA as one of the NFL lawyers. Eagles players really hated him because they felt he never dealt from rewarding the player point of view but always trying to break them to get the absolute best deal for the team.
Heckert and Banner did not see eye to eye on those deals. I think it is one of the reasons why Heckert has been so preemptive on his dealings with players. If you perform he will reward you but if you dont live up to that reward, he will let you walk.

Furthermore, the players disliked him because of his reputation of knowing when to dump a player, even if that player was a "name" guy.
The Eagles were the creme-dale-creme of the NFL when it came to knowing when to dump a veteran before they over-paid him. That was always a terribly unpopular stance not only for the players but fans as well. Nobody wants to see their 30-something star who is still playing at a high level getting dumped onto the free agent market, but in year 3 of that big 5-year deal when the player is costing his new team $10 million a season and he's a broken down old war-horse who is losing playing time to a 3rd round rookie, Banner and the Eagles were the one's laughing.
Banner played the bad guy and Reid played the good guy. Nobody can deny the success Banner had, regardless of how he got there.

toad...so you want a "penny pincher" running the Browns and you want him making personnel moves based on contract values?
That is precisely what got Banner fired by his best friend.
Banner could not get along with the people who knew talent and he pushed his penny pincher values until Andy Reid issued the owner, Jeff Lurie, an ultimatum...Banner goes or Andy goes...we know how that turned out, don't we.
Toad...was Jeff Lurie wrong to fire Joe Banner?

So on one thread you say we could have signed a FA to shore up the G position. Now you're promoting a guy who won't pay them?

this is exactly the model that Belichick and Pioli also ran in NE. And what the Rooney's do in Pitt. You need to pay people based on relative value. It gets you in sticky situations personally sometimes (see Welker and Wallace currently), but it's what all the good franchises do.
what franchise just overpays for guys (even their own) and has shown a consistent model of success?

j/c Banner-Reid Power Struggle? You'd Better Believe It The Eagles will hold a news conference this afternoon to talk about Joe Banner losing his key to the executive bathroom at One NovaCare Way. Banner will be there. Owner Jeff Lurie will be there. General manager Howie Roseman will be there. And head coach/executive vice-president of football operations Andy Reid will be there. The one thing you can most assuredly count on all of them telling us in no uncertain terms is that that Banner’s decision to step down as club president has absolutely, positively nothing to do with him losing a power struggle to Reid this offseason. Which means it had everything to do with him losing a power struggle to Reid. When Reid was asked in late March at the NFL owners meetings about a report by the Los Angeles Times’ Sam Farmer that he had threatened to quit if he wasn’t given more control, Reid dismissed it by saying that he’s had "final say for a number of years." That was true and not true. Yes, Reid largely has had final say in personnel decisions since Banner and Lurie fired Tom Modrak back in 2001. But in his role as the team’s salary cap wizard and chief contract negotiator, Banner had a great deal of influence over many of those personnel decisions. Reid had grown weary of having a locker room full of players with bad attitudes because of the way they had been treated at the bargaining table. He felt a kinder, gentler approach was needed. At some point, probably right before Lurie announced in early January that Reid would be returning, I think Lurie came to the same conclusion. "I was surprised by this move because Joe has been so close to Mr. Lurie and was seen as such a huge part of the Eagles’ franchise from the time Mr. Lurie took over the team," agent Drew Rosenhaus said. "It’s a stunning development. It’s not something I ever anticipated happening just because he’s been so integral." Yet, Rosenhaus saw things changing this offseason. He negotiated new contracts with the Eagles for free agents DeSean Jackson and Evan Mathis and All-Pro running back LeSean McCoy. Banner wasn’t really involved in any of those negotiations. Roseman was the Eagles’ front man for all three negotiations, as he was for the contract extensions to right tackle Todd Herremans and defensive end Trent Cole. "Howie really handled exclusively the negotiations for DeSean and Evan and LeSean," Rosenhaus said. "Joe wasn’t directly involved in any of those discussions from the start of the offseason. I actually negotiated (undrafted free agent safety) Phillip Thomas’s contract with Joe. I remember him calling and joking about the fact that he wanted to work on at least one deal with me this offseason." Reid will never admit it publicly, but he believes letting Jackson go into last season without a new contract was a big reason why the Eagles missed the playoffs last season. The immature Jackson let his contract problems affect his play and also had a ripple effect on the players in the locker room. Reid made it clear at season’s end that he wanted Jackson back. My sense is Banner felt the Eagles would be better off without him. "We struggled up to this offseason really to get the club to work on an extension with DeSean," Rosenhaus said. "The team really wasn’t aggressive as it related to DeSean’s negotiations until this offseason. "I don’t know if there was a power struggle or not. There’s no way for me to know that. But I do know that things changed in terms of the Eagles’ approach to DeSean after the season." Does Rosenhaus think the Eagles are better off with the kinder, gentler approach Roseman has brought to the bargaining table this offseason? "I’ve always enjoyed working with Howie,’’ he said. "He definitely is a general manager who wants to get deals done, who really has a lot of energy and has a positive approach towards negotiating that, in general, works really well. "One of the reasons we’ve been successful in working out deals with Howie is that he’s really a straight shooter and he works at it." Both Roseman and Reid benefit tremendously from Banner’s departure. It enables Roseman a chance to escape the shadow of his former mentor and make his own mark as a front-office executive. For Reid, it means he finally is a Bill Belichick-like king. While chief executive officer Don Smolenski will take over the day-to-day operations of running the Eagles, this truly is Reid’s ship now for as long as Lurie chooses to keep him around. Which could be just one more year. Or 10 more years, depending on what happens this season. "There no longer is any doubt who the most powerful guy in the (Eagles) organization is," an executive with another NFC team said. "It’s Andy Reid. And apparently, there wasn’t room for both of them any longer." Banner has long been acknowledged as one of the league’s top salary cap managers. But with the new collective bargaining agreement, it no longer takes an Einstein to manage the cap. "I just don’t know what Joe brought to the table anymore,’’ another agent said. "In terms of scouting and personnel, you get that with Howie. In terms of negotiations and managing the cap, between Howie and a guy like (manager of football administration) Jake Rosenberg, where is his value at this point? Especially if he’s not on the same page as the head coach." http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/home...p;jCount=4&On this same page there is a poll asking if Banner leaving was good for the Eagles. 74.4% said it was.... 3570 votes to 1232 votes.

Every article and writer has their own slant.
But I've been reading quite a bit about Banner. And from what I gather, when the salary cap was tight, Banner did a good job managing it.
But the owners overall weren't happy with a few being able to manipulate it so well and others losing out. So in 2006 with the signing of the new CBA, it loosened up a lot more cap to sign more players with better contracts for all.
But from what I have seen reported overall, Banner simply didn't change with the times and pretty much made himself obsolete in his style of handling things.
We've seen how players go from team to team and while Banner made some very good decisions early on, people began to figure out that if your players hated the way your FO treated you, they simply don't play that well.
I know I've seen it in business. While being shrude is a great thing, there's a lot to be said about productivity when your employees have high morale. And from every indication I've seen, often times morale was pretty low with the whole "tough guy" tactics of Banner.
It looks like we'll soon find out. But if there is any truth to this, we think FA's don't want to come here now? We think rookie hold outs are a thing of the past?
Stay tuned folks.......

DC...after reading the article Pit just posted, what do you think?...was Banner fired?
Banner lost his job and was given a new position, while someone else took over Banner's position and is now in charge of the duties Banner once held....what does that tell you, DC and what would you call it?
In this day of political correctness, Lurie, who is Banner's best friend, is doing all he can to avoid using the word "fired". The Banner move might be best described by the PC crowd as being "a promotion".
Banner had signed a new contract a year or two ago and ran to 2013. So rather than kick Banner completely out the door, he gave him a brand new job and title as advisor to the owner.
Banner had become so much of a negative within the Eagles organization that he was labeled the most hated man in the organization. Andy Reid had enough of him and issued an ultimatum to Lurie, Banner goes or Andy goes...owners choice....Banner lost his job and rather than playing the PC game, I call it what it was...Joe Banner was fired.
Now it looks as though our new truck stop owner is going to fire Holmgren and hand those duties over to the penny pinching Banner.
Keep in mind, Banner's expertise is salary cap and contract negotiations...and it looks as though our new truck stop owner is going turn the team over to the numbers guy.
The Browns current numbers guy is Bryan Wiedmeier...he is likely gone too, once Banner takes over.

If the salary cap constraints were as deciding as 5-7 years ago, I'd agree with you 100%, but it HAS opened up...I DO understand that the salaries will go up respectively too but only for the elite players, not so much the minimum players...I'm not sure he's a good fit in today's NFL world...we will see....as I said, I have no problem taking him over Holmgren

DC...after reading the article Pit just posted, what do you think?...was Banner fired?
It wasn't spelled out, bolded and set in capital letters, so it doesn't count!

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

So on one thread you say we could have signed a FA to shore up the G position. Now you're promoting a guy who won't pay them?
Hmmmmm......
Seriously?
You don't see the difference between signing a free agent to fill a hole as opposed to letting an aging veteran on a current roster go who is near the end of the line?

On this same page there is a poll asking if Banner leaving was good for the Eagles.
74.4% said it was.... 3570 votes to 1232 votes.
1) Eventually even the best guys have to move on.
2) Philly fans boo'ed Santa Clause. Not much credibility there with me.
3) As previously noted, fans don't like seeing long-time vets get sent packing before they reach the end. Banner was the evil guy, Reid the good guy. They are supposed to hate the bad guy.
4) The fans now want Reid out. I wonder what that means when compared to the above.

toad...so you want a "penny pincher" running the Browns and you want him making personnel moves based on contract values?
Simply stated, Banner in his role was part of one of the most successful teams in the league over the last decade. If he comes here doing the job he did there, I'm all for it. That blueprint was wildly successful and that's good enough for me. Of course none of that will matter if we bring in the wrong personnel people, but in the microcosm that was his job he was the envy of all of his piers.

i would also like to state that the timeline of Haslam finding out about being able to purchase the Browns and Banner leaving the Eagles looks awfully suspicious. There is a good chance he was not fired and just decided he wanted to be more apart of an ownership group. I would like to know if he does get a minority stake if he is coming aboard.

NoGo, you're not allowed to do that so I would ask you to delete your post. Without a link to an article backing up your claim you cannot suggest that something happened.

yes i know. the mere possibility of happenings must be limited to those with the great journalistic integrity as to be employed by the bastians of truth-seeking at places such as the Plain Dealer
