But what you seem to be doing, is acting or implying that this is a standard practice by those that recieve such benifits. When in fact, it's a very small percentage that do that.

I assume since you are challenging ytown to prove that a lot of people abuse the system... you are prepared to prove they don't?

We've moved past that.

In today's computerized world, it should be rather easy to link a grocery store's register to the food stamp machine so that the EBT computer can get a listing of what recipients are buying with their cards. The local welfare office could then pull up this information when the recipient comes in for their evaluation. Imagine having a welfare recipient having to explain how they spent $70 on subs for one meal .......

IMHO, people receiving benefits should have to account for how they spend our money.

That may be an easy way to deal with the problem. But if that's the objective, why not simply restrict the things these cards will pay for in the first place? Like Deli items, soft drinks and such?

Wouldn't that be easier, less taxing on employees and more efficiant than having to interview all of these people?

At the corner store, each foot long sub is roughly $10. In fairness to them, they are huge subs. Like I said, people buy these 5 at a time with the food stamp card.

Add in 5 bags of chips at $3.69 each, and 3 or 4 2 liters of pop at $1.69 each and it's not that hard to get to $70.

Then, of course, many people will then also buy smokes, beer, and lottery ......

If you want to see for yourself, I will PM you the store, and you can come watch people for yourself around the first of the month.

One meal?

And, anyway, they're only putting extra money into the pockets of small businesses and job creators. And that will lead to more hires and lower unemployment.

I know a few people who can put away one of those suckers in a single meal ..... so year, it could be one meal.

I know that you want to play semantics here rather than actually see the issue for what it is though ... so carry on.

No, they are taking the money that small business paid in taxes, and the employees paid in taxes, and recycling just a bit of it.

When they stop spending my tax dollars, I'll be happy to let them spend it on whatever they choose. Frankly I am offended when I see people who "need" help wasting the help they are given.

I think the issue here is fraud by the store owner and the food assistance reciepient. Prepared foods are not supposed to be an eligible item. Your supposed to be able to purchase the items to make that sub yourself, but not the sub made for you.

As I understand it, deli subs not eaten on the premises are fine, but hot prepared foods are not allowed under any circumstances.

There need to be some tweaks, sure, but you're living up to a high priest of hyperbole billing by spouting off on "$70 in one meal on subs and chips!"

It's frustrating. But forcing drug-testing and adding other surveillance-type measures just ends up taking more of my tax dollars to acquiesce you being ticked off about your tax dollars being spent. At the end of the day- there's bigger fish to fry.

In that same breath- something that shocked me when me, my girl, and her friends were at the mall here in Jackson- there's a store called "Rainbow" which is some sort of designer clothing for kids and women (took the space of what was previously Gap and is similar in clothing for the aforementioned market) that accepts EBT cards. How in the hell is discount designer clothing and underwear a basic need to be covered by taxpayers?!

Ok, that sounds about right.

Back last December i was on food assistance for a short time after I lost my job and we tried to buy a 8 piece chicken from grocery store and had to pay cash for it. I just thought it was all prepared food that wasnt eligible.

I know their idiots and cheaters out there, but for the majority the system works the way it should.

Maybe thats why Romneys 47 percent irked me. Not everyone who gets gvnt assistance is reliant on them and looking for a handout, but after paying into the system for so long, using the assistance I helped pay for shouldnt be looked down on. I am an example of exactly how the sysyem is supposed to work, yet Romney lumped me right in with the lazy and the cheaters.

If "your" tax dollars are the issue, than what you're advocating is antithetical to your point.

What you're advocatingwould cost "you" more, not less.

The hell I'm using hyperbole! I saw a woman buy 5 foot-long subs plus other crap and the bill was over $70! Don't tell me that I'm using hyperbole when I am stating exactly what I saw with my own 2 eyes. I watched her pay for it with that blue food stamp card. I then watched her buy beer, cigarettes and lottery with cash on top of that. No hyperbole. Actual reporting of fact.

There may be "bigger fish to fry", but we spend a huge amount of the federal budget on social spending. The Department of Health and Human Services takes up a huge portion of the federal budget. If we are going to take that off limits, then we're never going to get the budget under control. If we are going to keep saying "those problems just aren't big enough to worry about", then we'll wind up continuing to do nothing at all.

Romney was talking about campaign efforts towards those in the 47% who are lazy and the cheaters. Those people are not going to vote for Romney no matter what he says or what Obama does...so why try to get their vote?

He clearly was not talking about people like you, or people who need permanent assistance, OR people who are retired.

Thats NOT what he said, maybe thats what he meant, or meant to say. His first response when asked about it was " i didnt know I was being recorded" then the spin and damage control started. He either showed his true colors when he didnt think he was on camera, or he was being the political chameleon that he is.

Yeah...because every guy who gives $4+ million to charity in ONE year clearly does not care about those less fortunate than him.

He gave it to his church, not saying there is anything wrong with that, but he was giving his tithingsthat is based on a percentage of his income.

I agree, they do. However, Romney doing his dutys to the church is not an act of charity, it just means he is a devout Mormon.
