linky New Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslem, whose takeover of the team was officially approved Tuesday, will name Joe Banner the team's CEO/president and current president Mike Holmgren will depart the organization.. Haslem has a news conference scheduled for noon and will announce the Banner move, the sources said. It is unknown if Holmgren's status will be addressed at the news conference. Haslem will close his deal to buy the Browns with Randy Lerner on Oct. 25 but these changes will take place before then. Holmgren, the former head coach of the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks, joined the Browns on Jan. 5, 2010. The 64-year-old Holmgren officially had the title of team president. He was instrumental in the hiring of current Browns head coach Pat Shurmur. Haslam bought the team from Lerner for $1 billion, and the owners voted 32-0 Tuesday to approve the deal. Haslam, who built his fortune with Pilot Flying J truck stops, has been a minority owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, but divested that stock to buy the Browns. Haslam and Lerner agreed to the sale in August just as training camp was opening. Haslam has said his mission is to bring winning football back to Cleveland; the Browns have made the playoffs once since returning to the NFL in 1999. The title of this thread is misleading. Although it looks extremely likely that Holmgren is gone, he is not officially gone as there has been reports that he was fired or he will retire at the end of the season or he was fired AND retire at the end of the season.
Either way, it's all semantics. Holmgren will be gone eventually. The only things he did here for sure are:
1. Hire Heckert
2. Hire other front office people
3. Draft Colt McCoy
4. Fire Mangini (a year later than he should have)
5. Hire Shurmur
Not really sure what his job was. I think he was just the de facto owner because Lerner didn't want to do it anymore.

Banner has a reputation for being a salary-cap guru and a tough contract negotiator. He worked with Browns General Manager Tom Heckert and coach Pat Shurmur when they were with the Eagles.

Emphatically stated that a 5-11 record was not acceptable but was apparently fine with 4-12.
Promised a complete and comprehensive search for a qualified head coaching candidate but hired Shurmur instead.
Swore that the team was not for sale weeks before the sale was announced.
Took a golden parachute worth millions for basically doing nothing in a position he was completely unqualified for.

So we have conflicting reports. Mary Kay Cabot and Nate Ulrich are both reporting that Holmgren is staying through the season ( Link, Link). They are also both in Chicago. I'm sure things will be cleared up during Haslam's press conference which is around 10 AM. For updates on that, I would suggest people follow Mary Kay Cabot and Nate Ulrich on Twitter. They are both excellent at highlighting major points of press conferences through Twitter as it happens.

Yeah, I agree. I never put the blame on Holmgren like some on here.. I think he did what he thought was right with Mangini, but for my money, that was really his only real blunder.
he brought in Heckert who I think if you look at who he brought in as scouts etc, has actually done a decent job getting some talent on this team.
Young guys take time to grow,..
Banner has a reputation of being a sound businessman, but who knows what will happen with him at the helm.
Oh and by the way, I just checked the feed and the room is now empty again...LOL

Well Otto, I'm just glad he's gone, too bad he was hired in the first place. Never liked the hire to begin with, and took a boat load of crap from you when I said so. You and the others who swore he was the savior of the franchise got what you wished for; an under qualified, over-hyped do nothing who gets to sail off into the sunset with zero thought for this franchise and fat bank account.
Now, whether Banner works out or not presents its own set of issues. So, let the chips fall where they may. Like it or not, a new day has dawned. Whether Banner works out remains to be seen, but at least there will exist the accountability that goes with the position.

Actually, I wish I'd said that. I don't have a problem with Banner in the front office, but I see nothing that says he's got skills involving player decisions.
If he leaves that to Heckert, I'd be fine.

Not claiming victory, merely pointing out fact. I want this franchise to win decisively, repeatedly and ultimately. It was never going to happen under Holmgren. It was delusional to think so. It's just too bad it took three years of mud running to get this point.

Like some on here. I for one am glad that he's gone (if that's officially true). I'll wait for the presser and see what happens. I always thought that Holmgren made Heckert draft both Colt and Weeden.
Maybe the truth will come out once the decisions have been announced and completed. We'll see. I think it's all ironic that the first win of the season comes 2 days before this.
