WASHINGTON — Government forecasters say a big storm that they're calling "Frankenstorm" is likely to blast most of the U.S. East Coast next week.
The storm is an unusual mix of a hurricane and a winter storm. The worst of it could be focused around New York City and New Jersey.
Forecasters on Thursday said there's a 90 percent chance that the East will get steady gale-force winds, flooding, heavy rain and maybe snow starting Sunday and stretching past Wednesday.
The hurricane part of the storm is likely to come ashore somewhere in New Jersey on Tuesday morning.
NOAA forecaster Jim Cisco said the storm is so massive that the effects will be felt along the entire coast from Florida to Maine and inland to Ohio.

One would think that after Katrina, George Bush would stop experimenting with his weather machine.

I don't have much time; gotta finish a project. computer models are showing a sub 950 mb storm (roughly cat 3) hurricane coming into Long Island NY on Tuesday-Wednesday of next week. NWS offices and other weather folks in northeast are already calling this more intense that "The Perfect Storm" and something that they will be writing about in the weather books for a long time. Large amounts of inland flooding, beach erosion, rain, etc. But with the strong ridge that will come through Ohio in the next couple of days and dig, there could be a significant amount of snow somewhere west of central Pa. down through West Virginia. There are amounts from this morning that are near 60" of snow in the mountains.

NOAA forecaster Jim Cisco also said to consider this your warning and if you are harmed or killed in this storm, IT'S NOT HIS FAULT ... and he's not going to jail over it.

If it is anything like the Classmates.com suit be ready to roll in the cash. I got my part of that suit a couple of days ago. Grand total of check? $3.93

Oh, it's just the latest greatest. Too much news coverage of the election........the weather guys got jealous, so they hatched this.
Wonder how man made global warming caused this..........next thing you know, the scientists will be chiming in about man made global warming and how we all need to get wind turbines...
My prediction? There will be a storm. Storms happen. Sometimes snow even falls. Sometimes, a lot of snow. Most often, storms aren't anywhere near what they "could be".

This might delay my trip to Seattle to begin my new job. I'm right near NYC. Bring it on. My sailboat is out of the water. Time to see how my gutter guards do.
Frankenstorm, I love it! Although I don't want to delay my new job. But there was a freak October storm here last year too! Took out a ton of powerlines

Well we have had pretty mild hurricane seasons because of man-made global warming.. now we are having a big storm because of man-made global warming..
I still remember all of the experts after Katrina predicting that that was the new norm...

We are getting the outer bands of Sandy, have been for the last day or so. She's got some punch to her, the gusts from her when she's 150+ miles out are worse than when T.S. Issac was right on top of us. Quite a bit of rain too. It comes in bands, but she's dumped a lot of water in a short time.

Yeah we started seeing the cloud cover this afternoon, and the winds started picking up around 6 the rain like you said has been coming in bands since around 7.

I heard anywhere from a tropical depression to a cat 2 by the time it nears land. If the storm center makes landfall just south of NYC and is a cat 2, that could be catastrophic to NYC. The storm surge would inundate a large metro area.

I went to the store and picked up an indoor propane heater just in case we lose electricity here. They are saying that it could be a possibility, and that it could be a longer than normal term deal.
I also bought one for my mom.
My brother went in search of a generator yesterday. I think that he found one, finally. It wasn't easy though.

I was at Home Depot yesterday and they were unloading pallets of generators. I've read bits from people in Philly about generators flying off the shelves by the dozen.

I went to Lowes this morning, and they were trying to find generators. For some reason, though, they were looking between Ohio and the Atlantic. I suggested that they not look in the areas that are supposed to get creamed over the next few days.

How bad is this going to be in order for them to evacuate New York city? Somebody give me an idea here......
From a report I saw on TV at half time tonight.... they are expecting storm surge up to 11 feet high. On top of that, the storm is supposed to hit at high tide..... so, there's going to be some serious flooding in NYC. Like, the elevation of Wall Street is 3 feet. It's going to be very much under water. The subways will be .... a disaster.

They have also said that the coastline itself could be reshaped by this monster.

I'm gonna go take a look and see how that storm surge is. I'll get back to you with a report from Petey Dangerous. It's high tide now, and I'm in that big flood zone. Time to take out the Subaru Outback
EDIT: Nothing too exciting in the NYC-ish area. My guess is tomorrow's high tides (it's around 11:30 here and 0000 Tues Morning) will be where it all happens.
Right now, just windy with an unusually high tide, higher then spring tides, but nothing extreme.
Two funny things though, the wealthiest of the folks in my town all live on this island-peninsula thing and all their cars are lined up in a row in safe ground. It's a car thief's paradise. Lexus, Mercedes, Range Rover, BMW gallore
The other very interesting thing, we have plenty of deer here, but tonight I've seen a ton. Much more then I normally see when driving at night. Looks to me like they know something is coming and they're stocking up while they can, before their food gets ruined by saltwater and massive downpour

That's not as big of a deal as it sounds... much more hyperbole than anything to freak out about. I say that because nearly EVERY good sized hurricane has that potential. It doesn't take a whole lot to have a storm move tons of sand around.

Welcome to the sensationalistic media storm! lol. We're used to that in Florida, I've watched Jim Cantore for years make mountains out of molehills.
Hope everyone up there stays safe and has all the stuff they need to survive this one. She's a beast for sure.

Despite hurricane Sandy, the guards at the tomb of the unknown soldier remain. Soldiers of the 3rd Inf Reg. continue to stand guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, despite adverse weather conditions. The tomb has been guarded continuously since April 6, 1948. (Photo courtesy of Karin Markert)

I believe that it would have to be. The guy facing us is probably the "Sergeant of the Guard", the two with their backs to us would be the guard going off-duty, and the guard coming on.
Just my guess.
