Strong majorities of adults under age 30 support gay marriage and a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants, and a majority supports legalizing small amounts of marijuana according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

The fact that younger Americans are consistently more supportive of these measures than the oldest generation may signal change in the years to come. For those under age 30, about two thirds support gay marriage and a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants. Support is shallower for legalizing marijuana but a majority of young people still support it. Middle age Americans (age 40 to 64) split more narrowly on each question while seniors (age 65 plus) generally oppose gay marriage and marijuana and split on a “path to citizenship.”

Overall, Americans support a “path to citizenship” by 57 to 39 percent, while splitting about evenly on gay marriage (51 percent support, 47 percent oppose) and legalizing marijuana possession (48 support, 50 oppose).

The poll numbers are consistent with changing dynamics at the ballot box. After a losing streak in over 30 statewide contests, gay marriage won approval at the ballot box in Maryland, Maine and Washington last Tuesday. In Minnesota, a proposal to ban gay marriage in the state constitution was rejected. Maryland voters also approved their version of a “Dream Act“, allowing qualified illegal immigrants to pay in-state college tuition. Colorado and Washington voters supported laws permitting possession, and in Colorado, consumption of small amounts of marijuana. (Oregon voters rejected marijuana legalization, and Arkansas rejected medically-approved marijuana).

Picking apart support within sub-groups in the polls reveals the ranging dynamics at play. Women are 18 percentage points more supportive of gay marriage than men (59 to 41 percent), but men are seven points more apt to support legalizing marijuana. And racial diversity explains much of the generational gap on immigration: Support for a “path to citizenship” is at 52 percent among whites under age 50 and 49 percent among those who are older. But two-thirds of both older and younger non-whites support a route to citizenship.

A bare 51 percent majority of African Americans oppose gay marriage while a similarly slim 54 percent support marijuana. Hispanics tilt the other way with 53 percent in support of gay marriage and a much wider 65 percent in opposition to marijuana.

The way forward on immigration issues appears to be most difficult for Republicans. While a majority of Republicans oppose a path to citizenship for illegals, 82 percent of Hispanics support it, with 56 percent supporting it “strongly.” President Obama increased his share of the Hispanic vote from 2008, a growing and critical constituency.

This poll was conducted Nov. 7 to 11 among a random national sample of 1,023 adults, using conventional and cellular phones. The results from the full survey have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. Error margins are larger for subgroups.

I support a pathway to citizenship. It's called get in line with everyone else.

Now I will support a guest worker program if taxes are paid to the government and it doesn't give foreign nationals an advantage over US Citizens.

Same with views on anthropogenic climate change. Older (republicans for what thats worth) population tend to believe man does not influence the climate. Definitely a quick spurt of progression in America. Black prez, gay marriage and now chronic.

All this new fangled ideology

In general, let me just say that I really, really wish that they would include the exact questions asked along with their results.

The way a question is asked is so vitally important.

Now I have no doubt, given that young people today tend to be less religious than their parents and grandparents, that more young people would be in favor of gay marriage and legalized pot. As far as legalizing illegal immigrants ...... this is a really tough one. However, most young people have not yet seen the effects of illegal immigration. They see this as an emotional issue rather than a matter of laws being broken. This is the lens through which they see this issue, as "fairness" to people, rather than having the US enforce their laws.

I do think that gay marriage and marijuana legalization tend to be more positively embraced in states that tend to vote Democrat. Maine, (Which has gone D back to 1988) Maryland, (D back to 1992) and Washington. (D back to the 1998 Presidential election)

Colorado has swung both ways in recent Presidential elections.

However, there are some young people who break the mold of their peers. My niece just got a job paying around $15/hour to start. She immediately became far, far more conservative when she learned that she was going to have to pay quite a chunk of her pay in taxes. Her friends are saying stuff like "But we should do this or that for people, because it's only fair ....." and she replies with "Yeah, but it's MY taxes that pay for it!" lol

I'll only say this much about it and that YTown's concerns about the wording of the questions is legitimate.

If we are being led by the younger generation the it's no wonder that we're in the position where we are now as a nation. When your country is led by those that haven't experienced life in any meaningful way with idyllic views inspired by that lack of experience, we're really in horrible trouble.

Ask me to put the future of our nation in their hands and I hold out little hope that anything will change for the better. Coincidentally, looking at the numbers presented, it appears that hippies really don't grow up enough.

I wouldn't mind any of the proposed ideas.

Especially gay marriage and pot have no impact on my life.

My primary concern with politics is that the goal of lowering the debt isn't marketable. I believe there will inevitably be a large change in the value of the dollar because you can't win elections by proposing massive layoffs, stripping of benefits, and removing of handouts.

This is the only concern I would have with illegal immigration. More people who are quite likely to use "benefits". If we reduced the nationwide benefits I wouldn't really care about anyone getting citizenship.

I'm a somewhat younger dude in my mid 20's. With these particular topics it is hard to tell the difference between a way right libertarian (your's truly) and a way left democrat/socialist. That is the main problem with this poll.

This is news?

These same old people who are being ridiculed for being behind the times are the same generation that, when young, were credited with leading the civil rights movement of the 60s and early 70s, standing up to the government on Vietnam, fighting corporatism, and defending individual liberties against an ever growing government...... Now they are part of the problem.

So all of you under 30 somethings who think you are so cool and so cutting edge with your progressive beliefs, just know that 30 years from now, as subsequent generations take what you have stood for and expand it in God knows what direction, you will be viewed as the stodgy old people standing in the way of progress.

I feel like most of the people who were "standing up to the government on Vietnam" are not opposed to marijuana legalization.

Just clicking.

I don't know if 18 - 29 is a fair demographic. There is a ton of difference between the veiws of someone who is an undergraduate vs. graduate.

I think it should be broken down more into the 18-23 age range and 24-29 age range. I bet the difference would be more astounding that some may think.

General Reply: Yea why cant we just go back to the old way of thinking. I mean who doesnt want to own a slave and make it a crime for a woman to be raped. Not criminal for the man but for the woman for seducing the man. Hell maybe we can form militias and hit the Indian reservations stomp a few babies skulls and wear women's vagina's for decorations. Ahh remember the good old days.

to far back? more of those glory days like in the good old 50's and 60's. Men could beat on their women without fear of prosecution. could hang a black man on Friday night and it would barely make the headlines. Hell even in the 70s there were still signs in small town America saying No Nigers after 9. Child molesting wasnt something you prosecuted, it was just something no one talked about.

Things arent great but everytime I hear people talk about how this country is in decline, I cant help but think decline from what? I love this country and I am one of the most patriotic people you will ever meet but the reason I love this country is because we are constantly striving to better ourselves as a nation.

Now to anarchy: This country from its infancy has been changed by the ideas of youth. The Boston Tea party was the youth looking for change. The civil rights movement was the youth looking for change. We are the strongest nation in the world because the youth has been willing to fight for change.

Mourn, I'm a little disapointed in your post. I feel just the opposit. I've heard people say that 20 years ago Obama would'nt have a chance against Mitt, but now the country is all about " who's gonna give me the most stuff '? The illegals that are here are called that because they are illegal. The Republicans are punished for trying to do the right thing The Dems don't care about whats right or wrong. They will do anything for the votes. If it means screwing over America....w2ell thats OK.

I am completely against illegal immigration but there should be a path to becoming a citizen. The real problem is neither party wants to solve the immigration problem. The Dems get the Hispanic vote and the Republican supporters get cheap labor. There is absolutely ZERO desire by either party to do anything about it.

We have a problem with people entering this country from Mexico and it is not just Mexicans. There should be a fence from one end of our border with mexico to another with cameras, motion sensors and border patrol officers.

Close the border and then figure out what to do with those that are here. IF they have been here 10, 15, 20 years working, seriously shouldnt they be allowed citizenship? At the same time, these gang bangers should not be protected from deportation because some liberal lawyer is crying about unfair treatment.

Hate to ruin the fantasy, but historically the GOP and the Dems are on the same page when it comes to illegal immigrants.

I don't think you're just making a 'general reply', but I'll address your response anyway.

Nobody is proposing legalizing slavery or rape. Your crudeness shows staggering barbarism, but I'm not altogether surprised.

Women got beat up without the men fearing prosecution? Really?! Lynchings of blacks? Really?! Where were these signs? I was alive in an American small town (both in Ohio and Texas) and I never saw any such thing... ever. They still rarely talk about child molesters.

Take any marker you want. Economic freedom. Personal liberty. Respect from other nations around the globe. Economic status of the country. Standard of living.

Quote:

I love this country and I am one of the most patriotic people you will ever meet but the reason I love this country is because we are constantly striving to better ourselves as a nation.

I don't know if that's what I'd say about you if I met you. Furthermore, I wouldn't say that the majority of Americans actually are striving to better the nation. I think that most are only trying to line their pockets at the expense of their neighbors.

Quote:

Now to anarchy: This country from its infancy has been changed by the ideas of youth. The Boston Tea party was the youth looking for change. The civil rights movement was the youth looking for change. We are the strongest nation in the world because the youth has been willing to fight for change.

I won't argue that point. Over the generations though, the youth have become progressively more ignorant and lazy than they were during the founding.

Actually, the Boston Tea Party wasn't the youth looking for change. It was colonials sending a message about the harbor taxes to be paid on the tea. The civil rights movement wasn't youth looking for change either. The majority of civil rights campaigners were serious adults, not high school or college students. They were largely religious congregations led by pastors.

And, we aren't (or weren't) the strongest nation on the planet because our youth were willing to fight for change. We are the strongest because we were founded upon principles of individual rights, granted to us by God, that no government could grant or take away. They are rights that every person (not just every American) is granted with by God. However, the Founders codified that it was known and that it was the purpose of government to protect them. The purpose of government has come to be (in the eyes of government and those that promote it) the never ending expansion of government.

We won't survive as a country. I seriously do not expect that we will see it survive the next 4 years. Even if it manages to survive another 4-year term of Obama, it won't survive much longer than that, no matter who might get elected as the next president.

Honestly, I won't shed a tear for it though. I don't think it can be saved and I will not lift a finger to save it. I wouldn't want to save the mass of corruption that now eats at the republic which is the behemoth government cancer. Let it descend into the anarchy that anyone that has been here long enough to have heard the reason for my username knows.

The country is divided, incredibly so, and it will become even more divided with every day that passes by.

The so-called 'fiscal cliff' looms near. It won't matter if there is an agreement or not. It will have changed nothing. Resentment of the government and our fellow citizens are only growing.

For example, let's make the following assumption. Let's assume that they come to an agreement to avoid the 'fiscal cliff' that includes 'raising taxes on the wealthy'. If you are one of those that are considered 'wealthy', why would you keep your wealth here if doing so subject that wealth to significantly higher taxes?

Now, for the opposite side of the coin. Let's say that no agreement is reached and mandated across-the-board spending cuts (0.25% reduction) and tax increases, also across-the-board (i.e., on everyone) go into effect. There will be resentment by those that didn't pay any tax before now paying taxes, and those that paid very little tax paying a much larger (50% increase, from 10% to 15% on lower income earners) than those that made much more and who will be receiving less for the taxes they do pay.

So, for the American people, both are bad options, but these were agreed to by both sides several years ago during the debt ceiling debates.

Now, they're looking to shirk their responsibilities again but there is little wiggle room. Someone is going to upset. Personally, I'm going to face more than a $4000 increase in my tax burden on January 1, 2013. I'm also facing the fact that the small business that I work for stopping their offering of medical insurance and even matching 401k offerings.

When Obamacare goes into effect and if my company stops offering it, I will likely face another $2500 in additional burdens (above what I already pay for medical insurance offered by my employer).

Asking me to give a crap what happens to my fellow citizen that laid this upon me is beyond the pale. When the crap hits the fan, I'm more likely to follow the descent down and feel the urge to kill someone that does nothing more than step onto my yard uninvited.

There is. It's call LEGAL immigration. It's how my grandparents came to this country from Eastern Europe (from what is now Slovakia).

Quote:

You're right. Shooting them at the border would probably solve the problem. It's certainly not the most humane, but it would probably solve the problem.

Except that doing nothing about the problem (and amnesty isn't doing anything about the problem) only increases the amount of gunpowder in the keg. What you get when the explosion comes is a larger, more devastating explosion.

Quote:

Or a war, where Mexico cedes territory and moving the national borders further south, thus shortening the border.

Quote:

Incarcerate them or send them back to Mexico should be the only two options considered. If they are caught in the country again, they immediately get incarcerated (I think penning them in Death Valley might be a good solution).

Quote:

IF they have been here 10, 15, 20 years working, seriously shouldnt they be allowed citizenship?

No, They should be allowed a choice between deportation or incarceration. If they have been here for 20 years and working the entire time, then you could probably offer them the opportunity of beginning the process of becoming a U.S. citizen (a 7-year process) and they would have to have a sponsor, as my grandparents were required to do. They would also have to learn the language, if they haven't already. If they refused any condition, then they should face immediate deportation.

Quote:

At the same time, these gang bangers should not be protected from deportation because some liberal lawyer is crying about unfair treatment.

Any of them that have a criminal history should face incarceration and they should automatically face the maximum punishment for the crimes. For example, if convicted of murder, they should be put to death, without haste. If the crime carries a maximum punishment of 30 years without parole, then that is exactly what should be the punishment.

But I read in a chain email from my uncle's cousin's lawyer which he received from Roger Brown. The email said Obama is going to secretly destroy America!

But it's ok. John Galt will rise from the ashes and institute a utopian libertarian state where everyone works in the best interest of others. Human nature will never interfere with any utopia at all!

Hey, I thought you were one of the guys that was gonna leave the country if Obama won the election.

With everything else, I'm still deciding what exactly I'm going to do. My wife doesn't want to go anywhere. I'm still trying to convince her. She's open to doing things that she would never have considered doing before. It may include becoming an expat.

But, to be perfectly frank, it wasn't a plan. If you think everything is going to be just great, then I'm not sure what to say about you.

Most people don't even know who the VP, Speaker of the House, Senate Majority Leader, or even their own Congressman is ..... and you expect them to pay attention to other political details?

The Presidential race has largely become a popularity contest. Give a good speech, go on all of the entertainment shows, and never discuss anything of substance that might confuse the uninformed masses who get their "news" from John Stewart.

I think that there should be a test for people to take before they can vote. Simple stuff like:

The current President is __________ .

He is a member of the ____________ Party.

Your Congressman is ____________ .

We vote for President every ____ years.

We vote for the Congress every ___ years.

We vote for the Senate every _____ years.

Name either one of the 2 Senators from your state. ___________

The Bill of Rights are the 1st ____ amendments to the ___________ of the United States.

The United States fought for independence from __________ in the Revolutionary War.

10 questions, and easy questions at that. You have to score at least a 60% to be eligible to vote.

I bet that many people would still have to cheat in order to pass .... and even cheating might not help them.

I admit I had to double check the bill of rights question, because for some reason 10 sounded to obvious to be right.

A2D, your post is right on. America as we know it is over. Work hard busting your ass and Obama will give you a few more Democrats to take care of. Its now wrong to work towards the American dream. thepeople have spoken.
I did like the idea of a test to vote. Although that has to be Racist. Whats next picture ID's. I guess I worked all my life to buy some slug a nice Laptop or Cellphone. If Obama can get re-elected with his record then we are all screwed.

Maybe we should start playing "Check off the boogie man fallacies!"? Here's a chart to get us all started.

I agree with the quote I attached but have a completely different view on DC's theory. Its not that the younger generation will change their views by the time they become Senior citizens (im sure some will), but I think that the older generation are hypocrites. They preached make love not war, used mind altering drugs, fight the man, freedom of speech, equal rights, etc. And now oppose all of that. Essentially, the younger generations learned from them.

Many oppose immigration issue on becoming citizens. I say make them citizens and then tax them. If we have that many illegals here, then why not. Its a new revenue source for our government.

Saw an e-mail today.......how ironic is it that gay marriage and pot get voted legal..........in the Bible, it says "any man that lays down with another man should be stoned."

Guess we were reading things wrong, huh?

Are you frickin' serious? Only half the current legal citizens of this country pay income tax. We would need the demographics of the newly legal citizens to at least match what we have now to maintain the status quo....and we all know that's not going to be the case. You're talking like that massive drain on resources will somehow be a money making proposition.

The current President is Barack Hussein Obama.

He is a member of the New......er...Democratic Party.

Your Congressman is Ann Marie Buerkle.

We vote for President every four years.

We vote for the Congress every misleading years.
We vote for our representatives every two years. Technically, senators are members of the Congress.

We vote for the Senate every misleading years.
One third (either 33 or 34) senators are up for re-election every two years.

Name either one of the 2 Senators from your state.
I'll name them both. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand.

The Bill of Rights are the 1st ten amendments to the Constitution of the United States.

The United States fought for independence from Kingdom of Great Britain in the Revolutionary War.

10 questions, and easy questions at that. You have to score at least a 60% to be eligible to vote.

I bet that many people would still have to cheat in order to pass .... and even cheating might not help them.

Sadly, I fear that you're right.

I've answered those 10 questions.

We are all screwed. It will come down to how hard we get the shaft.

There are people out there getting a $250 phone, which I'm helping to purchase for them that I cannot afford and even if I could, I wouldn't spend the money to get.

We are, for all intents and purposes, Greece already and nobody seems to want to admit it. Denying reality doesn't make reality any different. It only makes the person a denier of reality.

1. I don't care what gay people do in the privacy of their own homes. I won't give sanction to them calling their relationship a marriage though. That would be asking me to accept a lie.

2. I don't care what people do with drugs in a recreational sense just like I don't care if someone drinks in a recreational sense. However, I do mind if people flout the law openly - even if it is a silly law like laws against recreational drug use.

3. They should still be shot as if they were an invading army.

They aren't hypocrits, they did what every generation does... when they were young they pushed boundaries and did a lot of things they weren't supposed to and then most of them grew up. They may have been more extreme than most generations but the premise is the same.... Take a poll of folks on here over 40, I bet none of them live like they did when they were 20 or have all of the same beliefs...

I think its funny that a lot of the people on here who constantly blast the ills of capitalism for its money grubbing greed are constantly trying to figure out ways for our government to make more money... legalize pot to tax it, make illegals legal to tax them, raise taxes on the rich....

1. Don't care, not my issue. What someone does in their own bedroom is not my concern. If they want to be married, just like the dearly departed Richard Jeni said, "they ought to have the same right to lose half their stuff like everyone else". I think they're nuts for wanting it but it's no skin off my nose.

2. I can't see where it will do anyone any good. I think it will create lazy people with no drive or ambition. I have my own concerns and I'm not about to try and tell someone else what they can and can't do. If the law makes it legal, whatever.

3. Path to citizenship is at the end of the line, get back there and we'll welcome you as it's what is fair to everyone. Expect special treatment and you shouldn't be allowed in, we have enough now expecting special treatment, more than enough. I can't say I'm in favor of shooting someone who's trying to better their life. Seems a bit on the harsh side to me.
