Anyone see the possibility of Shurmer being demoted to OC with Banner and Haslam putting their own coach in place?
If they liked what he was doing with the " O " as HC why would they demote him ?

If Haslam wants Heckert gone, he'll save face by making Heckert an offer he can't refuse to make it look like it's Heckert's own decision. He's way to savvy to do it any other way.
That's how it usually works.

I'm not sure I follow. If it's an offer he can't refuse, why would he refuse it and leave?
Or do you mean he low balls him like the Yankees did with Joe Torre a few years back?

I'm thinking more of a behind the scenes win-win situation with Heckert leaving of his own accord.

PITTSBURGH -- With the Browns set to fire coach Pat Shurmur and general manager Tom Heckert by Monday, here's a short list of some GM candidates the Browns are likeley to interview: the Falcons' David Caldwell, the Bills' Doug Whaley, the Chiefs' Ray Farmer, the Cardinals' Steve Keim and Jason Licht, and the Seahawks' John Idzik. Kansas City GM Scott Pioli might also be let go, and he'd be an intriguing prospect for the Browns. He loved his Cleveland days, and interviewed here with Randy Lerner for the president's pos.
Former Browns personnel executive and current NFL Network analyst Mike Lombardi is also on the radar.
Heckert is expected to be hired soon by a team with a GM opening. There could be a dozen or more openings.
In other Browns news, the team has hired Brent Stehlik as executive vice president/chief revenue officer, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. He's a Cleveland native and Mount Union grad.

Not sure guys from the cardinals and chiefs would be at the top of my list.
I could get on board with Caldwell or Idzik

I agree that hiring Pioli after running the Chiefs into the ground would be a mistake. But even though those guys other guys teams suck doesn't mean they aren't good at their jobs.

So, they're going to fire Tom Heckert and replace him with somebody who is not as effective. Essentially, they are making the team worse.
If they fire Tom Heckert and bring in anybody mentioned (especially Pioli or Lombardi) then guess what, I am done also. The stupidity would be too much to overcome. I have never heard of something so ridiculously stupid. If they fire Heckert, then they better be bringing in somebody proven, otherwise I'm through.

Somebody needs to keep track of all the people who are "done" or "through" if (insert name here) is hired. Quote:

We don't know if they are not as effective until they get the job and fail.

There is good thinking lets fire someone that is good and maybe we could replace him with someone as good? You would think after watching 10 years of what not to do it would be obvious what does work. I guess not so.
If you need 3 years to be a winner you got here 2 years to early. Get it done Browns.

While I agree that Heckert is good at his job I cannot blame Haslam/Banner wanting "their guy."
You would agree that during those ten years we have also had people that were running the organization that were not on the same page, right? How did that turn out?

There is one reason why I could see them wanting to switch Heckert for someone else ..... and that's if they see him exclusively as a WCO offense/4-3 defense guy .... and they decide to change schemes on offense and/or defense.
I think that Heckert can definitely do a quality job finding players for just about any offense ..... but if the next coach is a 3-4 guy, how much experience does Hekcert have at finding 3-4 guys?

Unless the modus operandi has really changed the Browns will shrewdly narrow the field by sitting around on their helmets until every team that needs a GM has hired one. Dear Jimmy, Keep Heckert Hire Reid and get as many quality veteran assistants as we can. No more OJT Oh and for gosh sakes find a QB already. League sources are reporting the club house guys may all quit because Weeden stands so long with the ball they can't get the pigeon do do out of his uniform.

Pioli to keep his job Quote:
On the list are the Kansas City Chiefs, whom NFL.com's Steve Wyche reported are expected to retain general manager Scott Pioli despite a disastrous season, according to a source briefed on the situation. Chiefs owner Clark Hunt has strong feelings for Pioli and wants to give him another shot to get things right, the source said.
I don't think Chiefs fans will be very happy about this.

The premise of this thread is all wrong. The Browns don't want a GM. If they did Heckert would be staying.
What Banner wants is a Personnel Director. Banner considers himself the GM.
Nobody who aspires to be a GM in the near future will take this job the way it's structured now. That 's why that dope Lombardi's name keeps coming up. He's the only guy who actually wants back into the NFL so bad that he'll be Banner's yes man.
I could be wrong. And I hope I am. But I don't think I'm very far off base in this.

You may be onto something. With what Banner has been saying it would fit. Coach having final say theory pretty much eleminates a GM and allows Banner to be the guy sitting down with said coach making personnel decisions.
Especially if they go with a younger coach/ rookie coach.

I agree 100%. Thus my sig.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I think we can take ourselves out of the GM discussion now. Banner is our GM. We may hire a personal director but an actual GM probably not.
