They're dangling that final say carrot out there. Is that in hopes for a Cowher or Gruden? Those two would most likely want FULL control.
Why do I have a feeling these guys are going to be shot down like a Japanese Zero?

If I was Jimmy , I would have said we let Pat and Tom go . They are good guys and we wish them well . Then I would have said, save your questions for the new Coach and GM when we name them . End of News Conference !

Let's see...... Banner, Haslam and the uuuum... GM in the war room coming to a "consensus"? Sounds like some socialist kinda stuff to me! The GM will be nothing more than the actual head of the scouting department.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Please tell me you were thinking PURPLE....
I dont think he was. Banner said him and Jimmy would be involved in making the draft picks. Banner also said that altough the hired people may not be as good as the people they replace being new will recharge the franchine and 2 3 years down the road they can re-evluate.
YUCK.
If you need 3 years to be a winner you got here 2 years to early. Get it done Browns.

I think you have to put Saban on that list as well.

They talked like this was the best destination for coaches and guys would knock their doors down to get here!
Well .... a team with 20 or so high quality players ...... most being 1st and 2nd year players ..... and a front office that is prepared to give the head coach all the support and power he needs ..... why wouldn't a head coach want to come here. We also have a great deal of cap room, so if there is a special player available, we have cap room and a billionaire owner to make it happen.
I think that the Browns job would be very attractive. The new owner/President have to want their hand picked guy to be incredibly successful ..... and will do whatever they can to help make that happen.. It's unlikely that Haslam and Banner want to have their first hire be a flop ... so they will allow him time to become the best he can be. He will get the time go grow into the job that Shurmur did not get. (and that's not saying that I want Shurmur back) I also doubt that Haslam will be outbid for assistants and/or coordinators.
As an aside ...... if the Bears staff becomes available, I definitely want Ron Marinelli for defensive coordinator.

Listening to Tony Grossi on ESPN-Cleveland ... Tony's take: Haslam wants to make a big splash with a high visibility coach who is a strong, aggressive leader, tough, organized, detail oriented. Grossi feels that means a.) Nick Saban, b.) Chip Kelly, c.) Jon Gruden.

Exactly. The only thing missing is a franchise QB (probably the biggest piece). I think we will be getting a big time coach with an All-Star staff.

I'd love Bill Cowher; he was a Brown before he was a Steeler. But I don't think he wants to coach anymore.

Ok so we can cross all those names off the list because Grossi is fantastic at being right.

It just seems like he always comes up sooner or later ........
He definitely fills the leadership part of the equation.

I dont know when, but I seem to remember Cowher saying that he promised the Rooney's he would never coach the Browns. For that reason and many others I just dont think is a viable option here.

Purple font mis-use: 5 yard penalty. Unless you're really saying Grossi is usually right (?). I don't know if we have a font color for "snarky" ... maybe red?

Are we really going to conclude that this team is going to be awful and that these 2 are awful people who cannot get the job done based on a 30 minute presser?
That depends on if you believe anything they said or not.
I don't care what they say up there. I know Jimmy Haslam wants to win and wants to win bad. The media isn't entitled into who they are looking for yet and we will all know soon enough what is going on. This was a formal end of year conference and a lot of the questions they were asking I don't feel like Haslam should have been able to answer (questions about Weeden, that's not his job, that would be the upcoming coach) and questions regarding the roster. On the other hand it's clear that Haslam cares and is going to do anything he can to bring a winning environment back to Cleveland.

Gruden has to many Reid/Holmgren ties for that one to ever happen. I dont think Saban will leave Bama thats a mega long shot and I dont want him anyway.

Peyton Manning is going to win the Super Bowl, then retire and become our new head coach .......

Whisenhunt and Graves the GM would be great hires. The Cards were to cheap to retain the quality players drafted. They lowballed all their own free agents. I dont want the 3-4 though.

Since you are the resident expert on Haslam, allow me to ask this question. What does winning mean to him? Victories on a football field,or more money in his pocket?
Of coarse everyone knows which you will choose, but in all honesty you have no idea which one Haslam desires more. This was not an end of year PC.This was an unscheduled event to announce the firing of Shurmer and Heck. And while you are correct in saying we don't need to know thier line of thinking,I don't know how you can surmise anything from the short time they spent patting each other on the back.
Indecision may,or maynot,be my problem

I wouldn't mind Wisenhunt at all. Bring in Norv to run the O and Lovie to run the D!

You assume he just cares about money in his pocket because he's a wealthy individual who just purchased the Browns. I infer from hearing the man speak with the passion he does about wanting to win that he actually does. The entire time he's been here that's what I have thought about him and I feel that way today after the presser still.
I'm sure he was getting pissed off in the press box when we were screwing up and losing just for show too, he's wealthy so he doesn't share the same human emotions about competition that we shared, it must all be an act to fool us.

I'd personally much rather have Grudens brother Jay. As much as I hate him, Saban is my top choice of the "big name candidates". If Chip Kelley is our coach, most likely we will go after Vick or Thad is our new starter and Weeden is clearly out. His system requires a mobile QB.

I dont doubt his wanting to win at all, however I didnt doubt Lerner wanting to win or Al Davis or Jerry Jones either. The difference is Randy wasnt all about the money. He was fine with keeping ticket prices low. Haslam is all about making money first winning 2nd make no mistake about that.
Randy wanted to put people in place to win and bring a title to cleveland first. He just failed. Haslam is all about marketing and now hes going to have his hand in the football side of operations incuding draft picks/FA signings.
As a fan I hope it all works out and we win 10 SB's but Ive seen this set up before here and it has failed every time.

If you doubt that then why is every major position of power marketing guys? Why is the highest in charge of football side of things going to be the HC?
Like it or not Banner is now the top dog in personal and he has no experence in that area. Everything Haslam has talked about is marketing this team better.
Yes he wants to win I dont doubt that but making money is 1st and formost.

A lot of people in this thread speak as if Banner learned absolutely nothing from his last gig.
I'll admit, I'm not on his bandwagon but until he proves to be incompetent HERE, I'm not sure what you can infer from his comments.
He'll get a chance to prove he wasn't a bad hire. Until then, it is just a bunch of collective whining about nothing.
I've listened to enough press conferences in my day to know guys who have no clue can sound smart in front of a mic and guys who are smart can sound like they have no clue.
Let's see what kind of coaching hire he can make and go from there.
