The Ducks get up on most opponents (patsy pac10 teams like Wazzu, and Arizona) so quickly that he never has to adjust. The few slug fest he's been in I've seen little to no adjustments.

Rewatch the Stanford v Duck game and tell me how well he makes game time adjustments. If by continuing to pound the square peg into the round hole is adjusting, then yes he's a master of game time adjustments.

That game is what really has me a little scared about Kelly. Every time they panned to him as Stanford shut down his offense he had a look on his face of "they aren't supposed to be able to stop us, what do I do". Just how I felt while watching it, doesn't mean it is true. I won't be jumping off a cliff if we do hire him, as I do see how he would bring a level of excitement to Cleveland we have not seen in a very long time.

It still cracks me up that you take a game or 2 out of 3 or 4 years and think that makes your point... I mean the Packers got absolutely lit up by the Giants this year, maybe the Packers system doesn't work.

I figure that has to happen with Kelly if the Browns truly do want him. My gut tells me if the Browns don't hire him Friday night then the Browns aren't getting him.

I believe that too... And if they do hire him on the spot, then Haslam and Banner will be accused of not making an exhaustive search...

It's not the game it's the competitions commitment to discipline. Discipline most college teams can't achieve. The ones that can... Auburn, Ohio State, Stanford... Win. The ones that don't have the talent or discipline to maintain gap integrity and commit to staying with their man downfield, get punked. That's my fear. The NFL is the cream of the crop. The most athletic, the most disciplined athletes make it. See my fear?
The Stillers aren't Cal. The Ratbirds aren't Washington. The Bungles aren't Wazzu.

Yeah, I mean it's not like Kelly has ever beat Stanford...

Except in 2011 when he crush Stanford 53-30.

Or in 2010 when he crush Stanford 52-31

Also, Chip has been historically pretty awful against USC, right? I think we can all say Pete Carroll is a pretty good defensive coach...

Scored 47 on him in 2009

We won't use post Pete Carroll USC because they have a total joke at head coach. Kelly did okay against Carroll when he was the OC. 2008 was a USC blood bath, but he did get his team to outscore them in 07.

Also, that LSU loss you keep harping on...scored 27 points on one of the best defenses in recent CFB history. That was the most points LSU allowed all year.

you had a good run Hank.

Don't get me wrong, he's an exceptional game manager, but that's what he is... but maybe that's what we need...

First, I can't deny that's "how he was used", but with a 70% completion percenvage, is that all he's capable of? Kapernick brought the mobility factor it seems they wanted when he was ready, but one would have to wonder if Smith could have done more if called upon to do it.

Secondly, I kind of outlined in my post that with TRich, BJacks and Hardesty, that with slightly better run blocking we have a three headed monster there.

So when given the QB choices in this years draft and looking at other possibilities, I realy see Smith as the most legitimate and viable option IF this FO is determined to make a change at the QB position.

I'm not advocating we make a change at the QB position but so far this new leadership in Cleveland has been cleaning house and who really knows what they have in mind?

So while I do agree that Smith has been used in the game manager role, I do believe he could do more than that. And with our depth at RB, as you mentioned, a game manager may be what we need right now.

I'd be mnuch happier with a proven commodity at QB if they decide to make a change and actually draft someone a little later, or even next years draft that will have a chance to learn and grow from the sidelines ala Aaron Rogers style.

Do you or anyone else have any other suggestions in this department?

Dont get me wrong here but we may have that guy here in Lewis. He has been sitting and learning for years now. I think that is why he looked as good as he did.
I still think Weeden is our guy next year but that wasnt the question.

They most likely gone is McCoy. I say that only because he seems to make his worst throws while on the run. Weeden of course cant throw on the run either but hes a much bigger cap hit.

We need a guy that can pitch or throw on the run and run. Lets get........
Johnny Football. Just have to win a few games next year then trade 7 1st round picks hes all ours.

If you need 3 years to be a winner you got here 2 years to early. Get it done Browns.

I don't deny that having a QB that has good mobility and can throw on the run isn't the optimum situation, but I'm not so sure that Thad is ready to fill that role.

I was impressed with his performance and not really as shocked by it as some seem to have been. However, once you have some starts under your belt and opposing teams have some film on you, only then will one really know the outcome.

While I would love for you to be right about that, I'm not sure we can gamble on that one. My theory of getting Smith is solely based on if this FO wants to make a change at the QB position.

On a personal level I would have no problem entering next season with Weeden and Thad as #1 and #2 on our depth chart. I just have a feeling this FO wants to make a big splash and I am trying to find the most logical move they could make to accomplish that if that's their desire.

You already admitted that Oregon has an undersized lineup that can't match up with the Stanfords and the OSUs and the Auburns of the world... yet Kelly loses to these teams by a FG or a TD or less or in OT... I would think that speaks very highly of a coach given an inferior lineup to compete like that against superior talent... now imagine him with Joe Thomas and Alex Mack and Trent Richardson and Josh Gordon and whatever other pieces we can assemble... if he has equal size and talent, does it still work? If you give him Ohio States OL and Ohio States WRs and a good mobile QB... does he then beat Stanford and Auburn? Is Ohio State 3 points better in talent than Oregon?

"Potential Head Coaches"

I think the refs should make this thread a sticky.. We can just keep the updates (rumors and gossip mostly) going year around in preparation for the next, head coach of the Cleveland Browns

Seems a big splash would be to land Chip Kelley and bring in Vick to try run that offense. Not saying it is right or wrong or that I want to see it but it seems likely to me.

Lol I wont be that guy either. Im a fence sitter on this one. Its almost like I was with RG3 Im excited about the thought of getting him but unsure about how he will translate to the NFL.
If we dont get him I will be fine as well because someone gave up something way over the top secure him.

I just hope that whoever our next head coach is, that he is effective, and wins.

I am so sick and tired of the off-season peeing contests starting the day after the regular season ends ...... and all of the speculation over whether the head coach and GM we just hired will be fired ........ who the next poor slob to try and turn this mess around will be .... why this QB or that QB/RB/WR/TE/DE/DT/LB/DB is a bum ......... and so on.

I am sick to death of blowing this team up every other year ..... switching scheme back and forth ... mixing up players who fir one defense or another ..... then going back again .......

Face it .... if we hire a 3-4 coach, we might as well have stayed with Mangini, because at least then we would have personnel to fit that defense.

Man, I'm just sick of all of every off-season being crap ... and the same old crap at that.

I said this with Shurmur ..... even though I didn't like the hire ....... but I just hope that whoever we hire we hire with the idea that he gets 5 years to learn the job, get his players in place, and run his schemes. I am damn tired of "well, you didn't make the playoffs in 2 years, so we're moving on without you, and completely changing directions again".

This is where the roster speed and depth really comes into play. For both teams. College rosters are huge. Kelly can stock up on track stars and run your football players to exhaustion so that he's going to make you dig deep into your D's depth chart. Your second team D is going to play a fair amount. His stable of track stars is deeper than your true football talent. It's a different game in the college ranks. Fewer TV timeouts, clock not stopping for first downs...
45 guys dress for game day in the pros. I want to know how many WRs we'll need to carry. How many big, really fast, great blocking WRs (not track stars) with good hands, make the transition into the pros every year? It's a different world. Track stars don't make great pro WRs. Ask Oakland how that's working out with Heyward-Bey.

As far as K State? I don't know. I haven't watched enough of them to make an educated statement. What I would love to see is K State crush them. Just to shut up the idiot Duck fans out here. That said... what I would really like to see happen is for K State to get a decent lead so all of you can watch Kelly NOT adjust. Just like everytime I've watched him get behind.

Chip Kelly will have no problem finding a QB to fit his scheme cause there are tons of those types out of work or will be. Tebow and Vince Young would be my first two choices, screw wasting a draft pick on someone.

Chip Kelly's quote is just another reason I am really starting to like this guy.

"There's a lot of great offenses out there, but does it fit with the personnel you have? The key is making sure what you're doing is giving your people a chance to be successful."

Pat never would change to fit the players. Linky

Somewhere else in 1 of the threads he said if you cant explain to a player why your running a play and whats its supposed to do then you probably should be running that play. (or something to that effect)

Remember how we had those discussions last year about RG3 and you said you really had a feelling about the kid and the more things went forward the more you wanted him. I guess the shoe is on the other foot now because thats how I feel about Kelly.

The more I learn about him, what hes done, the way he got to where he is today and the way he teaches just screams in my head this the man I hope we get. Give him TIME, as you just said, is the key.
Around here that is a luxury not afforded many connected to a team named the Browns.

If we dont get him I wont be ready to jump off the bridge either I will like you did with RG3 watch and wonder, while supporting who ever the new guy is. (unless his name is Lombardi and its not engraved on a trophy)

Sadly it will be hard for me to know if hes adjusting or not because I have not watched them or really paid attention to them at all.
I remember the Ohio State game but I felt we had the better team and we did. Thought nothing more nothing less.
I am going to watch the game try to get a feel for the guy. It would be interesting as you said to see him get down a couple scores see how he react's.

Probably wont change my opinion but would give me more insight into his demeaner. Sideline presence.

That thought has crossed my mind. I guessing we would have been 1st on the wanting Kelly part with Philly having Reid in place but you never know what words are spoken in dark places behind closed doors.

I agree that I want a guy who is not so completely in love with his own brilliance that he tries forcing players who don't fit into doing things they don't do well.

I truly felt that Shurmur (and staff) did not do all they could to help Richardson and Weeden by tailoring the offense to their strengths. Instead they tried to adapt the players to their offense. It just seemed to me that other teams did a far better job of saying "This is what our rookie does well, so we're going to use some of that in our offense to help him be as comfortable as possible".

In other words, instead of pounding round peg into square hole, they rounded off the hole somewhat so the peg actually fit.

I would have to think that Kelly has been learning as much from the pro coaches he has talked to as visa versa. I doubt that he speaks, and then refuses to listen to what they have to say.

Further, one other thing I like is that he seems driven almost to obsession. He wants to be a great head coach, and to have great teams. I do happen to believe that the primary requisite for greatness, beyond even pure talent, is the drive and determination to be great. I think that he has that.

I think that is exactly what Haslam is looking for, and that's why I think that the Browns will do all they can to make sure that Kelly is their next head coach.

I get all of that about his offense running teams to exhaustion... which is why he is going to have to make some adjustments... no way can he snap the ball every 14 seconds in the NFL.... that doesn't mean that the principles of his offense won't work if tweaked appropriately...

Heyward-Bey started slow but he has looked pretty good lately, it's not his fault the Raiders have been horrible since he was drafted.. I think he's a lot like Crabtree, if they could get that team on track, he will turn out to be ok... probably never worth where he was drafted but a pretty good WR...

Trust me, I'm liking that the entire state of North Carolina is Ofer this bowl season.

Honest question because I don't know.. but when in the last 3 or 4 years has he been behind by 2 scores late enough that one really needs to start abandoning the game plan? And what kind of adjustments do you think he should make to his base offense when he's behind?

Chip Kelly is for sure going to the NFL. It's just a question of which team. Last year he didn't go to the Buccaneers because Oregon wouldn't guarantee that his offensive coordinator would take over as head coach. And now there is this. Oregon has said that Mark Helfrich, Oregon's offensive coordinator, will become the head coach if Kelly leaves.

Intereting, I can see that he would want someone to take over he apporved of. I thought the AD was a close tie to him there so it would make sense that if he knows hes leaving he would have talked to the AD about who would be his best replacement.

For all intents I would agree now its just a matter of where no longer when.

If you need 3 years to be a winner you got here 2 years to early. Get it done Browns.
