At the very least I think we bring in a FA. Vick,T. Jackson etc. I do think we may draft a mid-round guy also ( EJ Manuel, C. Klein?).

That's possible but I think it's highly unlikely that we bring in either Vick or Tavaris Jackson. Why would we do that when we already have someone to run the system on the team?

I really don't think we draft anyone before the 4th round for it and probably not even then.

It seems to me that he spent a ton of time with us, but expressed his desire to fulfill his obligations with other interviews. Then he's agreed to come back to the Browns. That's happening tonight.

That's a 90% sure-thing right there. It'll be done tonight unless some other team doubles our offer.

I see some comments that some don't want CK because of things that killed us before..no NFL experience..etc..it's the thing that worries me..However I think ..I said I think he's bright enough to get some NFL minds behind him to help..now I wou;d have preferred a NFL coach but it may not happened..I am more concerned about who they surround CK if he is the next coach.
I'll say the same thing I said to BWS..he has to come out the gate hot..meaning not 3 not 4 not 5 but at least 6-8 wins..

j/c*Some NFL executives have questioned whether or not Chip Kelly’s style of offense will play in the pros. Kelly, however, has been putting this message out through back channels: He would not run the same offense he runs at Oregon if hired by an NFL team. Instead, he would run a pro style offense, but with a faster tempo than most and with a good dose of no huddle. The NFL model for Kelly might be similar to what the Patriots run. Also in question is the way he makes his practices grueling. One NFL front office man said Kelly would have to lighten up the practice pace, especially later in the week, or he would have no players left by the middle of the season.

I never thought that Colt was "Chip's man".

I could see them bringing in Alex Smith or make a huge reach for Geno Smith and using Thad as our back-up.

McCoy hanging around as third string on the cheap is the only logic as it concerns "McCoy being in the plans" in Cleveland.

While I think Geno would be a reach, he has the mobility and can throw on the run which both he and Thad posess. To me, that fits a lot more into what Chip would be looking for in a QB.

Alex Smith kind of fits into that mold as well. People have given me some grief about suggesting Alex Smith, but I feel he would fit into Chip Kelly's type of QB.

I'd bring in Tebow.

He can run the O and the only time he actually played he took his team to the playoffs.

Add in the kid will have a chip on his shoulder with something to prove makes it a can't miss IMO.

That's great and all, except that Kelly has already dismissed Tebow by name, saying that he wants a QB who is a passer first, and a runner second, not like Tebow or another QB whose name escapes me.

I like the idea of Alex Smith. He is a solid seasoned veteran and if I remember correctly, didn't Smith run a similar type offense under Urban Meyer at Utah?

Anybody have thoughts about Joe Webb? I have always liked his game. He can throw the ball well and can be dynamic running with the ball. And I am sure that it wouldn't take too much to pry him away from the Vikings.

Kelly has not always run the Oregon version of his offense. Over the course of his coaching career, he has fit the system to the players that he has had at his disposal.

Really?

Let's see, he was the OC at Oregan before he became their HC.

The ONLY other place he had any say in "running the O" was at New Hampshire where he was an OC.

Now can anyone tell me or does anyone even know what kind of O New Hampshire ran from 1999 - 2006?

Because you see, before 1999 the only thing Kelly ever did was positioning coach jobs at Columbia, John Hopkins and New Hampshire.

[sarcasm] And I'm sure that these major universities did a LOT to help him prepare to be an NFL HC! [/sarcasm]

So "over the course of his career" he has only had input in running two O's. So could you tell me what was different about the O at New Hampshire during his tenure there?

Because there and and the Ducks is the only experience Chip has at running an O. It's not some vast diversity you seem to think it is.

I know you're a Tebow supporter. But seriously, a QB can't take you where you really want to go throwing less that a 47% completion rate which is exactly what happened in Denver and why they found a legit QB ASAP.

He's simply not accurate enough to be an NFL QB.

Seriously? I think you hear what you want to hear.

What was reported was that "McCoy was in the new coaches 'plans'".

Nothing even hinted that he was the plan as starting QB or was "the man".

Having him on the roster as the 3rd string QB is still making him a part of "the plan".

You're trying to insinuate something was said that simply wasn't said at all.

I think Tebow could add something to a Kelly type of O. He sometimes likes to load the backfield and as an H-back with an option to throw the ball on ocassion would be a nice wrinkle to have.

He's a hard worker and a team first guy with some talent. The Broncos spendt a 1st round pick and got a 3rd round pick for him and now the Jets don't want him either.

So I think we could get him VERY CHEAP! But as a QB?

I don't see that as any legit possibility.

The only head coach to enter the NFL without NFL experience and have success is Jimmy Johnson. Now Jimmy modeled his coaching style from the NFL into the college system and then he just brought his pro style to the NFL.

This is different. We see NFL teams trying to add what he is doing to their system. I think it is probably going to end up total and complete disaster but at least he likes speed and aggression and that is a major major and i do mean a major plus.

I am intrigued. I would advise him to retain every single coach on the defensive side of the ball. Keep his focus on what got him here.

Oh I get it.

You totaly tried to say they said something they didn't say. But let's avoid that, right?

You tried to say the two reports contradicted each other which they most certainly did not.

You either remembered or changed the wording on the first report to help accentuate your point.

Oh yeah, I "got it".

It seems you don't.....

Considering they were ranked in the top ten in the FCS for passing yards, I could guess what system he ran, which would be a spread air raid offense.

Not having NFL HC experience isn't a bad thing, IMO.

To me the problem is more a square peg and a round hole.

If you kind of, sort of, use Tebow the way he plays best, you bet, it isn't going to work. The proof IMO is the 47% you mentioned earlier and the 60 or so % when he was in college running a system he could run.

But...I am not trying to change the tread in that direction, so I'll drop that.

I hope we get Kelly. He is the new wave of NFL coach for the new wave of players entering the league. Look at the trends in the lower levels of football and you see the future trends for the NFL.

The future is about here...lets be on the first wave to create a change just like Paul Brown created change when he entered the NFL.

We aren't getting any younger my man. We entered life as fans with winning, exciting football. My vote is we go out* with winning exciting football.

* Let's hope that is at least 20 or so years. I'd like to say another 30-40 years, but hey, you and I are around the same age, you know what I am talking about.

If life was a football game, life would be 15 year quarters and a 15 year half time. Anything after that is overtime.

What future Peen? The read option he runs at Oregon? The same same offense he told NFL people he would have to change for it to work in the NFL?

The Meyer/Kelly offense will never be a base offense in the NFL. Will we see sets or aspects of it like the Seahawks and Redskins run with Wilson and RG3? Sure we already do. I do believe the prototype QB like Weeden are a thing of the past, but a team running a Tebow/Pryor type QB there that can't throw the ball will never happen unless its out of lack of a better option thing.

If the O you see as the future was what Kelly wanted to run then yeah your right Tebow would be a great fit. Problem is you have to be able to throw the ball in the NFL, and that is why we won't be a pure read option team and Tim will have trouble finding a job in the NFL next year.

What intrigues me about Kelly is his up tempo offense that runs a plethora of plays per game. That is what his O will be based upon IMO. Granted he wants a mobile QB that has some ability to use the read option on occasion (which means Brandon is more than likely done here). However, as he stated he wants a guy who can throw first. The NFL is a passing league now......the exact opposite of a read option trend....and until the rules change it will remain a passing league.

As Mort reported (and I could see this being very accurate) the QB Kelly wants is probably not on this team. Colt would be the closest, but his lack of accuracy on deeper throws is a big minus for any offense because it shortens the field a defense has to cover. I'm a fan of Boyd and would love to get him, but if not Colt is probably a decent option to be a gap filler.

Shouldn't we stop declaring what Kelly's offense is or is not going to be until 1) He his hired as the Cleveland Browns Coach 2) He actually tells us what offense is going to be or 3) Watch a game where he is the head coach

or maybe even all three?

Sun, I gotta ask this question man...what is Kelly's scheme? I'd really like to know because nobody around here seems to know for sure what system he's gonna run...

I don't care what you call it, you won't get me fighting for semantics here. All I know is that it's not NFL style and that this dude never coached at the NFL level in any capacity. He will learn on the fly and probably has a big enough ego to call his own plays on Offense. What's the difference between him and Shurmur again?

If J&J really have Chip and Marrone 1 and 2 on their list and even consider Lombardi for any personnel job with the Browns, we're run by dolts.

Buying high and on hype is what idiots do, Chip Kelly is all hype and his "value" at an all time high...and guess who are the dumb teams biting? Browns and Bills. I'd if it wasn't so sad. Banner all going gaga over Kelly so he wins the pissing contest with Lurie....just pathetic...this "brain trust" has LOSER written all over it

...and before you keep asking for articles: it's my opinion, and there are all kind of alarms for it, it's not my problem if you can't see them, I have my reasons....just like others being excited with Chips or Haslam and a new episode of "lowered expectations" since they'd even be "ok" with Lombardi.

Where's the "big name" HC? Where's the "experienced GM"? All I see are noobs....Cleveland Rebuilds, back to being the training ground for NFL maybes

This was part of a PM I shared with another poster just last night:

This is what has me bumming out:

1. rookie owner
2. rookie president
3. rookie HC
4. figurehead/scout for a GM
5. the possibility that Lombardi might be that "GM"

I don't see how any sane person could look at this confluence of elements and see anything other than failure on a whole new, deeper level.

I'm still trying to get on board with all this, but I haven't yet been able to shake my bad mood about this.....

People that think Smith is just a sad game-manager whose numbers are bumped up because of a good run-game haven't watched him play. They also make too many assumptions regarding Kaepernik.

A QB still has to make the calls. He still has to make the reads. He still has to make the throws. And he did all those very well the last two seasons.

Smith wasn't benched because he stunk. He was benched because Kaepernik brings an elite arm and elite mobility to the position along with youth. He was also Harbaugh's hand-picked guy.

Smith isn't a great QB, but he is a good QB. He has some mobility and smarts. He'd make sense here. (and he's younger than Weeden ). I don't think he'd be a target of this regime, but he'd bring instant credibility to a position that hasn't had that since Testeverde was here in the 90's.

Agreed. When Smith came into the league he was progressing nicely until the arm injury. I think he came back too soon which is why he struggled for a couple years. I really believe that he had those bad years because of the arm injury which seems to have fully healed about a year and a half ago and because of the numerous changes in offensive systems he was asked to run. Seems like for a while there the OC for SF was changing annually.

Browns notes: Lawyers reportedly set to be present tonight during team's 2nd round with Chip Kelly - Cleveland Browns - Ohio
http://www.ohio.com/blogs/cleveland-brow...-kelly-1.362793

The Browns are still the favorites to win the Chip Kelly sweepstakes, though no deal has been reached yet, NFL Network and ESPN reported today.

Kelly, the University of Oregon’s coach for the past four seasons, interviewed with the owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner for about seven hours Friday in Arizona, and he’s scheduled to meet with them again tonight after he interviews with the Philadelphia Eagles, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported. Kelly also interviewed with the Buffalo Bills on Friday night, the team confirmed.

Lawyers are scheduled to attend the Browns’ meeting with Kelly tonight, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported. Rapoport and ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported today the Browns are favored to secure Kelly. Schefter also reported it seems certain that Kelly will leave Oregon for the NFL.

If Kelly chooses the Browns, he would become their sixth full-time head coach since 1999 and their 14th in franchise history. The Browns fired coach Pat Shurmur and General Manager Tom Heckert on Monday after finishing 2012 with a record of 5-11 and their fifth consecutive losing season.

The Browns have Brandon Weeden, Colt McCoy and Thaddeus Lewis under contract, but none of them would be considered the Browns' quarterback of the future if Kelly becomes their coach, Mortensen reported. If that becomes the case, the Browns would likely embark on a quarterback search in the offseason.

The Browns also reportedly interviewed Syracuse University coach Doug Marrone, former Arizona Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt, Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton and Penn State University coach Bill O’Brien. They interviewed Horton on Tuesday and thus complied with the Rooney Rule, which requires NFL teams with head-coaching vacancies to interview at least one minority candidate.

Search for personnel chief

The Browns have requested permission to interview Kansas City Chiefs director of pro personnel Ray Farmer and Minnesota Vikings assistant general manager George Paton, according to reports by Schefter and Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer.

Farmer has spent seven seasons as the Chiefs’ director of pro personnel, overseeing the scouting of all players with professional experience. From 2002-05, he served as a pro scout for the Atlanta Falcons. Farmer, who would satisfy the Rooney Rule, played was drafted by the Eagles in the fourth round in 1996 and played linebacker for three seasons before his career was cut short by a knee injury.

Paton has spent six seasons with the Vikings as the assistant to General Manager Rick Spielman. The two previously worked together on the personnel staffs of the Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins. Paton’s primary responsibilities include coordinating scouting and personnel functions for the Vikings’ pro scouting department and helping the college scouting department prepare for the draft.

NFL Network analyst Michael Lombardi, Seattle Seahawks vice president of football administration John Idzik and San Francisco 49ers director of player personnel Tom Gamble are other personnel men who are reportedly on the Browns’ radar. The Browns also asked the 49ers for permission to interview Gamble, NFL Network’s Albert Breer reported.

No NFL desire

University of Alabama coach Nick Saban told reporters today during the BCS National Championship media day that he has no desire to return to the NFL. Saban, a Kent State University graduate, went 15-17 in two seasons as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins (2005-06). The Browns have reportedly been interested in him for months.

“I don't have any unfinished business in the NFL,” Saban said, according to George Schroeder of USA Today. ... “It's not something I'm concerned about. It's not even anything I want to do.”
