Then maybe we can wind up with my preferred head coach.

Ariens wouldn't hurt my feelings. This FO may not have him on their wish list, but he's well ahead of their top 2 current choices on mine!

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I'd prefer Ariens myself.

I'll go ahead and post the article. Thanks for the link......

Buffalo Bills coaching search: Team reportedly hires Syracuse's Doug Marrone

The Buffalo Bills have hired Syracuse's Doug Marrone to be the NFL team's new head coach, ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting.

Marrone and the Bills reached an agreement early Sunday morning, according to Schefter. Terms were not disclosed. Marrone would replace Chan Gailey, who was fired at the end of the regular season.

Schefter also reported that Buffalo settled on Marrone after interviewing former Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith on Saturday.

The 48-year-old Marrone was an NFL assistant for seven seasons before taking the Syracuse job in 2009. He came highly recommended by the likes of New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton and NFL coaching legend Bill Parcells.

The Orange were 25-25 in four seasons under Marrone. Last month they defeated West Virginia in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium.

Marrone was a candidate for the Cleveland Browns' head coaching position as well. Cleveland has also had extensive talks with Oregon coach Chip Kelly, who in turn has met with the Bills and Philadelphia Eagles. In fact, Kelly met for more than eight hours with Philadelphia on Saturday.

The Bills are the second team to hire a new coach this month. The Kansas City Chiefs hired former Eagles coach Andy Reid on Friday.

Marrone Off List For Cleveland

Good for them, I actually preferred Marrone to Kelly because of the WCO familiarity and continuity argument, but I wasn't exactly blown away by him to begin with.

So now it's Chip Kelly or bust? Looks like....either way I'll trash J&J, as I don't like Kelly and be happy if they miss on him. Otoh it'd be their 1st "RG3-like" fail already.

I hope they luck into missing on him. Whisenhunt being forced to stick with Jauron and the 4-3 would be my top choice now

Neither were on my top 5 list but I felt Marrone was the lesser of the two evils.

I've felt bringing Banner in here would limit both the coaching and GM potential. Plus the FA potential.

So far I'm not seeing anything that sways me from that opinion....

Saban was our #1 candidate, so if we lose Kelly, we'll look like twice-cooked fools?

Now, let's say that the Browns miss out on Chip Kelly. He obviously looks like their #1 pursuit right now. But, they miss out on him so they reach back into the college ranks and pull out... Urban Meyer?

Let's Make A Deal!

So do you want what's in the big box or shall we see what's behind door number 3?

Door #1 maybe?

Just a general statement to add some jocularity to the situation of Chip Kelly and the battle between Cleveland and Philly to land his services.

Do you think that Joe Banner and Chip Kelly talked about the Eagles (and Jeff Lurie) at all? Did Joe Banner say things about Philly and the ownership there? I mean, they did talk for 7 hours!

And has Chip Kelly gone to Philly to verify it, report on what Banner said about them or to listen to what the Eagles (and Lurie) have to say about Joe Banner? I mean, they did talk for 9 hours!

In other words, are Joe Banner and/or Jeff Lurie 'kissing and telling'?

If I had to venture a guess I'd say they used to kiss but now they tell.

I think it would be funny if that were to happen.

I don't think Urban Meyer would do it, but that would be funny. That would be one-ups-manship of earth-shattering proportions.

And it must be some juicy stuff for Chip Kelly to meet with both for such long periods of time.

If Banner or Laurie talk bad about the other in the HC interview, if I were that candidate, I would be very put off. That would definitely be a reason for me to turn down their offer.

So you don't think that an out and out SEC guy (Haslam) wouldn't at least contact Saban to see if there was even a little interest? I certainly do.

Frankly, I think Kelly is jerking the Browns and the Eagles around this year like he did the Tampa Bay Bucs last year.

Phil Knight has probably already promised him an extra couple of million in his birthday card if he stays.

If the Browns have any brains ( and that is in question as I type this) they better hope that the Colts lose so they can call up Bruce Arians and give him the job he reportedly would love to have.

Otherwise, that splash that Jimmy Joe wanted to make may be the same sound as one hand clapping.....

My preferences from the beginning were McCoy or Shanahan. Whisenhunt would be up there for me, too.

Just another general reply to all these folks stating who their 'preferences' for the job as the next Browns head coach should be.

My 'preference' was to get rid of Shurmur (and Heckert with him) and bring in someone new that is competent. I trust that whoever is brought in will be better than what we had and that the team will be better because of it.

If that's Chip Kelly, Bruce Arians, or the Bone Lady, I don't care.

Well, God did answer my prayers that Shurmur and Heckert would get fired.

And my track record is no worse than yours.

well just got up and see Buffalo got their guy. (I didnt like the word settled in the info release) I didnt have enough to study up on him to have much feeling either way.

I really thought Lovie would end up in Buffalo so I am kinda shocked. 2 of 7 coaching spots now filled. Plenty of people left to pick from going forward if we dont get Kelly.

while I get the money statements with Kelly I really think its about how the org is run and what he can do in terms of personal/hiring staff and the roster that are the final parts that need to be hammered out.

If he doesnt believe in our system and that he can win here and only comes for a few million more a year I dont want him. I know the media plays up the money alot and of course that is important but I dont think its the end all be all with Chip.
IE hes not going somewhere to lose because of a few more coins each year.

People have turned down more money to stay in better places before.

Maybe Chip Kelly has reservations about being reunited with his illegitimate son, Machine Gun Kelly, in Cleveland.

While Im big on Kellly I understand why people are not. I felt like you that Banner was going to limit us in areas that would be important and like you nothing atm is swaying me from that.

If we land Kelly, Banner and Haslams work is far from over and I would say has just begun.

I don't doubt that some feelers were sent, but I think it unfair to say it like Kelly is already the #2 choice.

Saban was out before he was ever in. He wasn't leaving Alabama. The guy makes $5.48 mil and the world is his playground in Tuscaloosa.

True. But if he was contacted first, no matter what his answer, he was the first choice. Even if it was a pipe dream.

BTW, he probably would have been my first choice, too, if I'd just spent a biliion bucks on a team.

Why?

He already has a good job at Oregon, at least 2-3 NFL teams are/were seriously interested in him, and dozens more college teams would be the same. The guy is under no obligation to accept the first job offer he gets.

Personally, I hope we find a way to hire him. I will be disappointed with anybody else who is realistically available, and I would have said the same thing a month ago.

I understand that as well. I just don't know if you send out contacts in order.....you contact guys from a list of candidates and go from there.

To be, plan B starts once plan A has turned down a offer.

It sounds like we have offered Kelly...so now we wait.

Part of me agrees with you. I am not sure the guy leaves the Ducks. I am not sure where he stands with his contract there, but he may simply be hoping for a nice extension and debt clearing bonus.

I don't like the fact we would be a part of the strategy, but I do understand his motivation in doing so.

Anybody is going to go out and interview if they know it is going to net them a much fatter wallet no matter if they go or stay.

It would be dumb if you didn't.

Why?

Because I'd feel like I'm being played. Friday, there was some disappointment that Kelly was going to go through with his meetings with Buffalo and Philly after all indications were that he was all but signed-sealed-delivered - but that was just Kelly "keeping his word". Then, yesterday, he completely blows off a scheduled 2nd meeting with Haslam and Banner. So we are to believe that at no time during a 9 hour interview with Philly could Kelly just stand up and say "Guys, I have to cut this short. I have a prior obligation."? I understand maximizing your options, but I'm getting the feeling that Kelly and his agent are just conducting a bidding war between two known rivals, Banner & Lurie.

Well, there's negotiating and then there's playing your potential employer.

If I were Haslam I'd have no problem with Kelly interviewing with as many teams as he saw fit.

But once he starts going back and forth between two teams I'd give him my final offer and tell him to fish or cut bait.

Regarding Saban and the validity surrounding him being our #1 target, before all this stuff started with the Kelly meetings, ESPN stated we waited to hear what Saban would say. He came back with "go ahead and continue your search" at which point in time the Browns put the hard-sell on Kelly. Ergo, Saban was our #1 with Kelly our #2.

I'm sure Kelly (or his reps) contacted Haslam/Banner to let him know what was going on..

I'm just tired of waiting for an official headline..
