Continue the discussion here. I'll be interested to see how things with Chip Kelly turn out.

Yeah, I agree. After Chip Kelly, there isn't a single coach worth hiring. Why bother? Might as well just have Weeden call all the plays on offense and DQ call all the plays on defense.

Well the Browns could always try Saban with renewed effort. From the pft article it seems Ray Horton really impressed so who knows.

Nope. If we don't get Kelly, the team should fold and we should all go root for Buffalo.

That's how i'm feeling right now. Some scrub coach who has too much power with a GM that is less than adequate.

We were setting ourselves up to get the coach we wanted I thought, and now I'm just not feeling so good about it anymore.

Ray Horton or whatever his name is doesn't interest me at all. I'd rather have Ken Wisenhunt

EDIT: And I don't even like that idea.

My question is slowly becoming "And we fired Tom Heckert for this??"

LOL well while Kelly is personal hope if he does decide not to come here I will have to really take a hard look at who is left that I like. Right now though with us asking for permission to talk to personal people I think this is all but a done deal.

If they had a 7 hour get to know you meeting imagine how long it will take with Lawyers.

In reply to Clem from the locked thread:

Quote:

This is what has me bumming out:

1. rookie owner
2. rookie president
3. rookie HC
4. figurehead/scout for a GM
5. the possibility that Lombardi might be that "GM"

I don't see how any sane person could look at this confluence of elements and see anything other than failure on a whole new, deeper level.

I'm still trying to get on board with all this, but I haven't yet been able to shake my bad mood about this.....

I'm not seeing where all the optimism is coming from either. It's quite the concoction that's very similar to this past season. We began it with rookies starting in almost all of the O skill positions, a rookie OC, a sophomore HC, Haden's suspension and the injuries to Taylor and Gocong. We're probably looking at another 4-5 win season if we're lucky.

That's what I was figuring. But now there's all this Philly stuff, which makes me panic. What's our next option. I'd like Lovie Smith. But are we even interviewing him? Bill O'Bryan sounded good, but he's staying at Penn State.

I'm sure Banner has a plan, and he's gotta have a contingency plan. But it's looking more and more mediocre for the head coach. Which makes me wonder, is this really what we're getting? We fire Tom Heckert (a competent manager, best we've had since coming back, who actually enjoys Cleveland) so that some coach can have more say over the roster, and we can't get a decent coach AGAIN

Just quite depressing. This sucks

We need some of those "Miss me yet?" posters with Shurmur and Heck's pics on them.

I was so upset that we let Heckert go. I feel like Heckert was really onto something. He has had a really solid draft with quality picks... not every pick turned out to be a home run but a good amount has been solid producers with promise on a young team

I agree with you totally.

Have to at least have some fun while we wait so Im thinking that Kelly isnt a small man and he just likes eating alot on someone elses dime.
Had a 5 hour lunch with us then dinner then dinner with the Bills then a 7 hours lunch with the Eagles and Dinner with us again.
He judging us by how well he is feed.

Oh well back to being nervous, again.

Looks like it's going to either be Marrone or Kelly:

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000...-kelly-in-limbo

Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports that the Cleveland Browns met again with Syracuse coach Doug Marrone, two sources said. The Browns are now trying to decide who they prefer: Kelly or Marrone.

That assumes the Browns even have a choice. Kelly is meeting with the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday. Mary Kay-Cabot of the Plain-Dealer reports that Kelly's lunch session with the Eagles on Saturday has extended late into the night. Kelly and the Browns were scheduled to meet again over dinner with the potential of closing a deal.

Anyone know why we didn't talk to Bruce Arians? Is he barred from talking to other teams because the team he works for is still in the playoffs?

You can only talk to coaches etc that are in the playoffs on their bye week. Colts are not in a bye week.

Probably because the team wants a younger, offensive minded head coach.

He's not doing interviews till after their game tomorrow.

That said though, the Browns have not, that I know of, asked for permission to interview him.

True .... I just hope that we wake up and interview Arians.

If we miss out on Kelly, then I'm not sure that Marone is some head and shoulders above everyone else guy.

Im with you if they dont get Kelly they need to go back hit reset. Almost everyone mentioned we wanted the PSU guy OC from NE and ATL all said they are staying put no thanks. Then you are hot on the tail of Kelly and Saban. Saban says no thanks and if Kelly walks away too?
To make a move after that would be knee jerk 10x more then what anyone has posted here.
It would truely be time to step back and reassess the situation.

I think that is 2 fold you dont need to ask after the team is elimitated and he was not in Banners master plan.
I just hope they dont become the guy at closing time that cant stand the thought of going home alone no matter what so they can tell all their friend well bagged a babe.

I had a nagging thought last night... Why on earth would be prefer the browns situation and roster over the eagles'? If the power/ personnel thing is roughly equal why would he pick all unknown quantities and a roster that needs a lot of overhauling over the eagles? When I heard he was still meeting with the eagles it dawned... This has all been a leverage move. I didn't think he'd pick the browns 3 days ago (I say it again, he was interviewing us not the other way around) but yesterday had me questioning. Today, Im back to thinking he and we ain't it. And I for one won't be sad except that our FO will know defeat before they know success. But I Won't be sorry if it's not Kelly.

Marrone was a very close 2nd behind Chip Kelly on not just our radar, but on several teams radar.

Any team that had Kelly as #1 and Marrone #2, then hits the reset button to reevaluate the big-picture would be foolish, as they'd then risk losing out on their #2 guy. (Of course Saban was actually our #1 guy, but that's just semantics. )

Any organization worth a flip would immediately...IMMEDIATELY...make an offer to their #2 guy. Why? Because only true dolts wouldn't have a backup plan in case of a situation like this.

Most organizations have a board just like a draft board. Ours was Saban, Kelly, Marrone, then some other guys down the list. If we lost Saban, we went right after Kelly. If we lose Kelly, we go right after Marrone. If we lose him, we go right after the next guy. Nothing that happens there makes us look like dopes EXCEPT not taking swift action.

I think the argument is that Marrone shouldn't be #3 (if that's the case)

no actually Kelly was about 5th on or list from the requested interveiws I listed not counting the throw ins which that guy may have been. If you go with the best throw in you (the Browns) are the dolt.
They interveiwed him twice and only because they had nothing to do while Kelly is with Philly. You could use the Arz coach in the same light we did give him an interveiw and teams will be after him but will he be the correct person for the job or just someone that is there while you wait for the one you want?
Should you sign him just because others are after him or because he was a main target?

If you personally think he was a main target that we went to ARZ to get that is your choice but I dont for a minute think that is true. Its just someone to help them not feel like they walked away empty handed.

I'm with you on this. Banner has a contingency plan and if Marrone is the guy then we get him . no reset and lose our next guy . those who hesitate are lost. if kyle shan is the guy we make a play for him, same with arians . but theres lots of teams and we dont want to get lost in the shuffle when you know your guy

You lost me a little bit. If you're saying we didn't have Marrone as a main target, I would disagree. Was he the main target? That was Kelly, but Marrone was a very close 2nd IMHO. I think they'd be idiots if they didn't go after the next guy they had rated.

BTW, Adam Caplan says the meeting with Kelly and the Eagles is over!

Drum-roll please....and the winner...is.....

Or they'll shop the Eagles offer to the Browns, then give the Eagles one last shot to beat it.

So who is the REAL winner? David Dunn's banker...
