Source: Lovie prepared to sit out 2013

What's next for former Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith? [If Smith] fails to land a head-coaching job elsewhere, he's prepared to sit out the 2013 season because he's not interested in any of the coordinator jobs, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Smith interviewed for head-coaching jobs in Philadelphia, San Diego and Buffalo, but each of those teams selected other candidates. The only other two coaching vacancies are in Arizona and Jacksonville. An NFL source recently said that Smith's name hadn't come up during any discussions for the opening with the Jaguars. Fired by the Bears on Dec. 31 after a 10-6 season, Smith was set to receive a reported salary of $5 million in 2013, which will be paid to him if he sits out the upcoming season

I'm betting he has a nice tan.

From the link you provided:

The Cleveland Browns today named Norv Turner as Offensive Coordinator. Turner was one of six additions to the coaching staff, which also includes Brad Roll (Strength & Conditioning), Mike Sullivan (Offensive Line) and Scott Turner (Wide Receivers). In addition, Chris Tabor (Special Teams Coordinator) and George Warhop (Offensive Line) will be retained from last year’s staff.

“I am very excited about the coaches we have been able to add to our staff thus far,” said Browns Head Coach Rob Chudzinski. “I have worked with Norv, Mike, Scott and Brad previously and know the quality of coaches and teachers that they are, and how much our players will benefit from their presence.

“Norv has been one of the most respected offensive coaches in the NFL over the last 25-30 years, and he has had a tremendous amount of success at each one of his stops – as a position coach, coordinator and head coach. I was able to learn a great deal in the time that I worked for him in San Diego, and I expect that having him as our offensive coordinator will make a big impact on that side of the ball.

“After sitting down and getting to know both Chris and George, I was extremely impressed with the type of coaches and men that they are. Not only was this special teams group vastly improved from the previous season, but special teams became one of the top units in the league last year. George played an integral role in helping to shape a young unit that I feel made great strides last year, and which has the potential to get even better. The continuity we have been able to create by retaining Chris and George will be big pluses in both of their respective areas.”

Norv Turner’s résumé includes 38 years of coaching experience, including 14 seasons as an NFL head coach where he won 114 regular season games. Most recently, he spent six seasons (2007-12) as the head coach of the San Diego Chargers. Turner led the Chargers to a 59-43 (.578) regular season record and won three AFC West titles (2007-09). He also served as head coach of the Washing Redskins from 1994-2000 and the Oakland Raiders from 2004-05. He had stints as offensive coordinator in San Francisco (2006), Miami (2002-03), San Diego (2001) and Dallas (1991-93). Turner’s offensive system has produced the NFL’s leading rusher five times through three different players in Emmitt Smith (1991-93), Ricky Williams (2002) and LaDainian Tomlinson (2007). While with Dallas, Turner helped the Cowboys win back-to-back Super Bowl titles following the 1992 and 1993 seasons. He broke into the NFL ranks with the Los Angeles Rams, spending his first two seasons (1985-86) as wide receivers coach before serving as wide receiver and tight ends coach (1987-90). Prior to joining the Rams, Turner spent nine seasons (1976-84) at the University of Southern California in various capacities. He helped the Trojans capture four Rose Bowls and the 1978 National Championship. A native of the Bay Area suburb of Martinez, California, Turner was a quarterback at the University of Oregon where he was a three-year letterman (1972-74). He landed his first coaching job as a graduate assistant at his alma mater in 1975. Turner and his wife, Nancy, have two sons, Scott and Drew, and one daughter, Stephanie. Scott is the Browns wide receivers coach.

Roll spent 2012 as the assistant strength and conditioning coach at USC after serving 19 seasons on the professional level with the Oakland Raiders (2008-11), St. Louis Rams (2006-07), Buffalo Bills (2004-05), Miami Dolphins (1996-2003) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1993-95). He was the strength and conditioning coach at the University of Miami (Fla.) from 1989-92, where he helped the Hurricanes to two National Championships. He was at the University of Kanas for two seasons (1987-88), where he worked with the Jayhawks’ 1988 National Championship basketball team. He also spent six seasons (1981-86) at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette after beginning his coaching career at Stephen F. Austin State University in 1980. A native of Houston, Roll played center at Blinn (Texas) Junior College and Stephen F. Austin.

Sullivan re-joins the Browns staff where he served as assistant offensive line coach from 2001-04 and 2007-08. Most recently, he was the offensive line coach with the San Diego Chargers for four seasons (2009-12). He also had stints at Western Michigan University (2005-06), the University of Miami (Fla.) (2001) and various American football club teams in Germany, France and Spain (1997-2001). As a guard/center, Sullivan was a sixth-round draft pick by the Dallas Cowboys and went on to appear in 48 career games with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1992-95). He played collegiately at the University of Miami (Fla.), where he helped the Hurricanes to National Championships in 1987 and 1989. Sullivan and his wife, Carole, have two sons, Patrick and John and a daughter, Teagan.

Scott Turner joined the professional coaching ranks in 2011 as the Carolina Panthers’ offensive quality control coach. He also spent four seasons on the college level (Pittsburgh 2008-10 and Oregon State 2005) and two years (2006-07) on the high school level. He was a three-year letterman as a quarterback at UNLV. Turner is the son of former NFL head coach and current Browns offensive coordinator Norv Turner.

I wonder if we're going to keep Gary Brown, (RB) Nolan Cromwell, (Offensive assistant) and/or Steve Hagen? (TE)

I think that all are quality coaches.

To me this is a huge hiring. I have always thought the best thing a young head coach can do is surround himself with good solid coaches.

That's one of the things I think Shurmer messed up his first season was not getting an experienced OC and trying to do it alone.

Now we need to do the same thing with the DC. I would really like to see us keep Jauron but I don't think that is going to happen.

Good news!.

Still have plenty of doubts about Chud as an HC, but this is a good hire.

They are and it's a good question.

But I'm wondering if we'll hear anything on the D side today. I suspect not.

It is quite possible that we have our eyes on a defensive position coach from one of the teams that is still alive..

I'm more or less wondering most about Pagano out of SD as a DC.

CHICAGO (AP) — Rod Marinelli will not return as the Chicago Bears' defensive coordinator next season.

New coach Marc Trestman says Marinelli has "made up his mind to move on." It was not clear who will replace him.

Marinelli is a longtime friend of former coach Lovie Smith. The Bears fired Smith after they missed the playoffs for the fifth time in six seasons.

Marinelli was hired as the Bears' defensive line coach in 2009 and spent the past three seasons as their coordinator. Before coming to Chicago, Marinelli went 10-38 in three years as the Detroit Lions' coach and was fired after failing to win a game in his final season.

Me as well Mour. There is actually some really good DC candidates right now, and I hope we act quickly. I like Rod, Morris, Pagano, and of course Jauron. I hope we get one of these guys quick, because teams are going to start hiring coordinators now that the HC vacancies are over with. My personal rankings would be...........

1.Marinelli
2. Keep Jauron
3. Morris (I thought he did a good job at TB and another former HC is good for Chud imo)
4. Pagano.

I would be ok with any of them in all reality............hope we move quick to get one/retain Jauron.

Any ideas as to names. I thought the same thing myself, but not sure who we might get the most from. New England? Baltimore?

Man I would love to grab Marinelli for DC. He attacks and attacks.

His defense had what .... 9 defensive TD this past season?

From what I've read we have two offensive line coaches with Warhop being in charge. I'm guessing it will be similar to what Cromwell did last year for the wide receivers.

Mel Tucker has been mentioned as a possibility for our defensive coordinator opening. He is now available:

Quote:

According to CBS's Jason La Canfora, Jacksonville Jaguars defensive coordinator and assistant head coach Mel Tucker may search for other employment options within the league, as he was passed up for the team's head coaching job for the second year in a row.

Arians was hired in Arizona and it has been said that he won't be keeping Horton. If he isn't keeping Horton we should throw everything at getting Horton to be our defensive coordinator.

Horton's defense the past couple of years with the Cardinals is the exact type of defense that was described by Chud during his press conference. I especially like how he uses Daryl Washington, who is a similar player to D'Qwell Jackson.

If we could get Turner as our offensive coordinator and Horton as our defensive coordinator I will be very excited about the 2013 season.

Quote:

ArizonaSports.com has learned through sources that Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians will not retain Ray Horton as defensive coordinator if he indeed lands the vacant Arizona Cardinals head coaching job.
Instead, it appears that Arians has already promised the DC job to Todd Bowles in any situation where he lands a head coaching job.

According to the source, Arians believed that he would land the Chicago Bears job, but that instead went to Marc Trestman, who coached the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League for the last five seasons. Arians had made the promise to Bowles concerning the Chicago opening.

From an article about Arians:

I would actually have interest in either Ray Horton or Todd Bowles.

I liked Bowles when he was here.

It's funny ...... Wiki already has Bowles listed as Cardinals defensive coordinator. lol (2013 to present)

I guess that Horton is really pretty pissed off over not getting the head coach gig in Arizona. (I assume that we can use that word if NBC Sports can)

Cardinals hire Bruce Arians as their next coach - CBSSports.com
http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/blog/eye-on...heir-next-coach

Incumbent defensive coordinator Ray Horton, who was considered for the Cards head coaching job, has let the organization know he would like to explore other options as well, sources told La Canfora. Bowles has several years left on his deal with the Eagles but with Chip Kelly hired as the new coach, several league sources expect the Eagles to move on from Bowles.

If Horton is let go from the Cardinals, league sources said the Browns would have significant interest.

Ray Horton angry after Cardinals hire Bruce Arians | ProFootballTalk
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/01/17/ray-horton-angry-after-cardinals-hire-bruce-arians/

The Cardinals have hired Bruce Arians as their new head coach, and the in-house candidate who was passed over for Arians isn’t happy about it.

Ray Horton, the Cardinals defensive coordinator who did an excellent job in 2012 while the Cardinals’ offense fell apart, was considered a strong candidate to replace the fired Ken Whisenhunt as the next head coach. Instead, the Cardinals have announced that Arians, who spent last season as the Colts’ offensive coordinator and interim head coach, will get the job. Multiple reports say Horton was angry at that announcement.

Mike Jurecki of XTRA 910 reports that Horton had a heated exchange with new Cardinals General Manager Steve Keim when he found out that Arians got the job. Mike Garafolo of USA Today reports that Horton is “pissed.”

It’s hard to blame Horton for feeling that way. He’s a well regarded defensive coordinator who paid his dues as an assistant and before that as an NFL player for 10 years. In any line of work, to be passed over for a promotion you think you have coming stings.

Horton still has a year on his contract with the Cardinals, but Arians isn’t believed to want him to stay, and it sure doesn’t sound like Horton wants to stay. So Horton will presumably start looking for another job as an assistant, somewhere, after thinking he had a good chance of staying in Arizona and becoming the Cardinals’ next head coach.

Yeah, I'd be very happy with Horton. (Plus, he would want to show people that they made a mistake not hiring him, so he'd be very driven to making our defense a force)

Oh I definitely think that his head can be in it as DC. The only way that he can ever be a head coach is to be a great coordinator, and show that he can overcome this setback. That's great incentive.

It's Offical Ray Horton is available and they hire some guy with a terrible track record...doesn't make much sense.

Quote:

For most of the last two weeks, it appeared that the Cardinals were attempting to implement a cake-and-eat-it approach to Ray Horton, keeping the head-coaching candidate as defensive coordinator and hiring an offensive-minded head coach.

Though the latter is what happened, Horton apparently won’t be staying.

Mike Silver of Yahoo! Sports reports that Horton is out as the Arizona defensive coordinator. Per Silver, he’ll be replaced by former Eagles defensive coordinator Todd Bowles on Bruce Arians’ staff.

Bowles was elevated to the position in Philly after Juan Castillo was fired. The Eagles went 1-9 with Bowles in the job, with the Eagles giving up on average 31.9 points per game.

In contrast, the Cardinals’ defense was the only bright spot for the team last year. And if Horton is available, he’ll surely land on his feet elsewhere — perhaps even sooner than Rob Ryan, who said last week he’d have a new job in five minutes.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/201...ve-coordinator/

Only real downside is Horton will continue to be a head coaching option and maybe a DC only 1 year.
My perference:
1) Horton (Maybe the Browns and Arz could swap some players since they are going 4-3 and Browns would be going 3-4 if hired)
2) Chuch Pagano (Chargers defense would be good and see how half the Browns staff is from the Charges team it would the West Coast Coaching Staff (Instead of offense)
3) Raheem Morris (has head coaching experience and could be helpful to Chud and wouldn't cause such drastic change in the base defense)

Go Browns!!

Horton is among the best defensive coordinators in the league. Like I said earlier, his style of defense is exactly the type of defense that was described by Chud in his opening press conference.

I like Jauron, but Horton would be one of the few guys in the league that is definitely an upgrade. It would be awesome if he could use Jackson similar to the way he used Daryl Washington last year.
