I'll go out on a limb and say that with their vast experience Turner and Hortons opinions will carry as much or more weight than Lombardis. He's just another sounding board there IMO. .
If that's the case, just WTF are they thinking? The coaches should be the sounding board, not the VP of player personnel (gm).

If King had a source for this information he should have referenced it rather than make some convoluted comment such as this.
Then you say: Quote:
Looks to me like Banner has been working his media contacts trying to manufacture some positive comments in support of his unpopular pick for GM, Mike Lombardi.
Got a source? Then you shouldn't make such convoluted comments such as that.
Looks like you pulled your conspiracy theory crap outa the mothballs again. Quote:
Is that supposed to be a positive comment about Mike Lombardi?
Maybe Peter King was tired, dreaming or had a couple of drinks when he arranged the words for this comment ?..."I'll believe that could well have been Lombardi's job"...
Boy, did King's comments put a damper on your little tantrum, hehe. Clearly that one is sitting in your craw.
I'm not a big believer in Lombardi, but there are people going to bat for him that I did NOT expect. That says something.
Really, too many fans...myself included...often jump to conclusions when we don't know all the story. So many people have made up their minds without honestly knowing what the Hell is going on that it's just stOOpid.
And yeah, that reads exactly how I meant it. Anyone who has their mind made up as to how this thing is going to be structured is FOS. They don't know. To Hell with anyone who dares not make up their minds ahead of time...
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***

Conclusions ? LOL... more like Knee jerk, whiny bitchy complaining... You don't know what your talking about.. But I do...LOL...
Damn This negativity and bitching is more than I can handle....For real people say the Browns fans are the best in the land.....Do they mean at arguing with each other..
Got to love message boards... they sure do put the message out....

He has experience. Also, just for clarification, I don't think Lombardi was the most qualified person for this job. I would probably have hired many people before him if I had my say. I understand why many people take issue with the Lombardi hire, but once a person is a member of the Cleveland Browns I try and find the positives.
Thanks for letting me know that. I find your honestly and candor quite refreshing.
We just approach things differently. I try to look at a persons body of work and state my beliefs in accordance with that straight up front.
At one time I tried to approach things much the way you do. But IMO- the only one I ended up fooling was myself.
We need people that try to stay on the positive side. And as such, we also need people to call it the way they see it. These two ingrediants make for a great debate sometimes.
But with your comment above that I quoted, I'll let things stand as they are......

that's what I've been thinking and saying, but some folks feel that because he's clearly Banners boy and has the VP title, he'll carry more weight than the HC, DC and OC when it comes to players. I don't believe it.
Then why do feel they were compelled to give him the title that gives every indication it's his job to do? Do you believe it's a "case of the dancing chicken"?
The dancing chicken is where they put a chicken on a stage with a hot plate under the stage like back in old sideshow days.
As the stage warms up from the heat of the hot plate, the chicken begins to dance. Giving the illusion of a dancing chicken. When in reality the chicken isn't dancing at all!

Why do you seem to insinuate that in order to focus on the positive that you have to make stuff up but to be negative, you can call it the way you see it?
I'm calling it the way I see it.. Lombardi's resume is not the total failure that some people want to make it out to be.. He has been hired and re-hired by some very well respected people in this league and has a decent history of keeping jobs and getting promoted... of course there are negatives to his resume, he has been fired.. so has pretty much everybody else who has been in and around the NFL long enough... he has blown some draft picks.. so has everybody else that has been in and around the NFL long enough...
Then people speculate as to what his responsibility/authority may or may not be and say they are calling it like they see it.... and I have found that people who call themselves "realistic" use that as a cover to be negative 99% of the time..
In the end, I have no say over who we hire or who we draft or how they are used.... I follow the Browns for entertainment, just like everybody else on this board no matter how much they think they know or how much they think their opinion matters or no matter how much better they think THEY could it....... being negative all the time would be like reading restaurant reviews, determining that the food at a particular restaurant is going to absolutely suck and then going to eat it anyway.... finding out that its not very good..... not giving it any chance to improve.... then going back again next week..... I don't understand that logic at all..... I want to believe that the Browns are making good choice, I want to believe that they are going to get better.. if they don't, there isn't a damn thing I can do about it anyway...

Sure... - he has been fired and re-hired like most in the league (though I'm not sure how many of those were out of the NFL for 5 years) - he has hit and missed on picks like everybody else So let's play "call it how you see it" (and that's for everyone): Lombardi as a talent evaluator is... A) GREAT (Top 5% at his job) B) GOOD (Top 20%) C) ABOVE AVERAGE (better than 55-65%) D) AVERAGE (bout 15 GMs are better, 15 worse) E) BELOW AVERAGE (better than only 35-45%) F) BAD (among the worst 20%) G) TERRIBLE (worst 5%) To me it's something between F) and G), only because there are a handful of bad GMs around but trending G) So, let's hear and not get lost in semantics...how do you "see it"?

How bout F N G?? Does that work? He knows that 'if' he can be part of bringing a winner to the most passionate and starved fans in the NFL he will be stripped of all wrongs in the past. I'm sure he is also fully aware about making any wrong moves. He also may feel he has nothing to lose. He is hated anyway by most of our fan base. If he fails things really don't change for him. This is his one big chance.

H.) Unknown,as the only ones that really know who had the final decision on past drafts he was involved in are probably not posters on this board. Was he overuled by Davis, Bellicheck etc.? Is there any evidence that he had final authority over any draft?

I don't really hold his TV Analysis over him that much either.
Guys are paid for ratings as website clicks. Not nessasarily honest opinions.
Yeah he said Gordon was a wasted pick. But since then has he said anything negative about his play? Richardson? Weeden?
And he'll. I AGREE that Rich/Weeden was a "panic"/win now move by H&H.

I see it as C trending to B... even though I have no idea what his board looked like going into each draft, what his recommendations were, who made final decisions on draft picks or any of that.. I still think it's a rising C...
I'll take his commentary on a lot of other players with a grain of salt.. like Gordon.. how much time do you really think he spent watching film and analyzing Gordon before making those comments?

i'm past the hand-wringing with Lombardi. i'm not happy with the hire, he has no past-experience that we can know what it means other than he was part of a team that had some pretty bad drafts.
he never had final say, and he won't have final say here. on a positive, he may have some extra connections gained through his time in the media. hopefully, he can utilize everything while working for the team we all love.

So you think he's better than roughly 20 out of 31 others at his job...wow, I'm dumbfounded
Any reasoning to this? Because as of now the most positive argument for the dude is that "we don't know if it was HIM that made those crappy picks in his resume"
Maybe you should review his resume another 30 times DC

That is just sad, and factual. The only other positives are that he knows people and seems intelligent. I guess when you have all this, there's no point in interviewing anyone else.

He has to make it work..problem is I don't feel he'll slack off..I just don't know how he can suddenly become a excellent talent evaluator.

That's quite easy. I was responding to a poster who himself said he didn't believe that Lombardi was even close to the best candidate after debating the matter with me. Even later in your own post you say because you "want to believe".
I'm not making anything up. If you believe I am maybe you should look at the quotes in the last response I just gave you in the other thread.
Banner has the final say. All football operations go through Banner. Funny thing, Haslam hires both Banner which hires Lombardi. Now some seem to think these guys are gonna collect checks while the coaching staff does the drafting.
And I'm making stuff up?

Quote:

Like Al Davis? Other than whacky Al, he hasn't held a job in the NFL for over a year since he was last here in 1996.
So if you would please let us know what his great draft record were here or in Oakland, I'd be happy to look at that. Other than that, since 1987 he's had a couple of one year stints. And it was while he was here that he was named in a position that put him in charge of pro presonnel. He never held a similar title before that.
Quote:
Then people speculate as to what his responsibility/authority may or may not be and say they are calling it like they see it.... and I have found that people who call themselves "realistic" use that as a cover to be negative 99% of the time..
And I've found that people try to use the label "negative" on people when they have little else with which to try to discredit them with at about the same rate.
Quote:
no matter how much they think they know or how much they think their opinion matters or no matter how much better they think THEY could it.......
I know what was said. I know who has the titles to be in charge of the different jobs. I know who's getting paid to evaluate talent and do the drafting. It's not a first time HC. To indicate otherwise is on helluva huge leap.
I don't think my opinion matters any more than yours does. It also accounts for no less. So you can jump off of that horse pardner.

And I don't think I can do that job. However, I do think I can look at a resume' and have a firm grasp of the obvious.

I don't consider Lombardis resume' anything like a restaurant review, more like an article of fact that says the restaurant served food that caused multiple cases of botulism. Something you wouldn't wish to risk going back to until it was uder new ownership.

Well why didn't you tell us that your opinion here was more of a "faith based/'hope'" thing in the first place!!??
If that's what you're going on, I guess there's not much choice other than to turn a blind eye! Thanks for straightening that part out. Things are much clearer now.

Heckert didn't go to the combine last year. I'm betting all the scouts are there and will have full reports. Also, everything is taped.

But say you're correct and it's no big deal, simple question: You've been out of the league for six years and you've just landed a job as the VP of Player Personnel, would you or would you not attend the Senior Bowl?

Heckert didn't go to the combine last year because he was having an issue with his heart and procedures done at the same time to treat it. (iirc) So he didn't "choose" to not go.
I believe that each team gets the tapes of the practices, so while not a huge deal, the biggest thing he is missing is the short interviews with each player they get on the field after the practices,
Statistics are like a bikini; what they show is interesting, but what they hide is vital. Drive for show (1st round), Putt for dough (rest of draft).

i would not. in fact, i hate the idea of watching some players live and some on tape. i think it biases the viewpoint. give everyone the same view to see the differences.
yes, there is some value to seeing things live, but you have scouts for that and they can put that in reports.

I'll go on record as saying I like the hire.
I don't really have a opinion at this time other then to say that from my experience, when the board likes someone it goes to crap in a hurry, so now that most are against, it will work against them as well.
I went for Collins and the majority went with the football guy Savage.
I think Lombardi is going to knock it out of the park for us.

From your .... well ... keyboard to God's ears.
Let's hope so.
I can't do anything about the Browns hiring him so I hope that he turns out to be the superstar he desperately wants to be.

This is probably his strongest qualification for the job. So far, the list is this:
1.) He might not have had last word on the horrible draft selections he was present for.
2.) He knows a lot of important people
3.) He's intelligent
4.) Most dawgtalkers don't like the hire

LOL....I know you're not.
I am not excited about it, but in the past any excitement changed in a hurry.
We don't know all the circumstances from his past. I do know he worked for some strong personalities who IMO weren't shy from making their own draft decisions.
You know for a fact that Lombardi's board was followed by guys like Billy boy and Al Davis??
I am sorry, I don't believe for a minute Janakowsi was Lombardi's pick. Al may have asked him who was the top rated kicker, just like he asked whoever who was the top rated punter on the board, many years before..
Phil Savage, most everybody's hero(at the time, and there was a time) creamed his shorts over a QB from LSU, so let's be real here....just because Lombardi was the guy pigeon holed in to selecting Russell doesn't mean he is a bad scout. I would say nearly every team in the league would have selected him if given the chance. I know your hero Savage would have.( Don't get defensive here, that comment isn't a finger point, you may have disliked him as much as i did, as the archives show if push come to shove.)
The point I am trying to make is you can't just look at a draft and say the guys sucks.
Lot's of credible people think the man is a solid "football guy".

My biggest concern is that there was no job search or interview process to get us the best person possible for the job. We heard a rumor in August that came to fruition, apparently without considering there may be better candidates out there. And really, outside of others saying "he's a good football guy", just what achievements or qualifications does Lombardi really have? If he had anything worth mentioning, you'd think JJ would be very vocal about it to shut the pieholes of us naysayers.

I really believe if J&J were to be be vocal ( they may have ) people would not listen and accuse them of not knowing what they are talking about , because Haslam is new to this and Banner is a friend....
There is so much animosity towards Mike that the only way for any one to listen... Is by seeing what he does...It may be bad, it may be great, it may be average...
Most important.. it won't be until he has done something....and as of now all he has done was take a job...
And maybe that's what J&J are thinking...let actions do the talking...

There's only one sane way to look at this.
Our Yearly Record going forward.
When we start hitting 10-6, 11-5, 12-4, color me a happy camper. And I don't care what these guys do with draft picks. It's working at that point.
Having said that, I see 2 individuals as of now since reading them that are going to jump right down our FO's throat after the draft. There's a couple of self-proclaimed draft experts on this board. One name starts with an "A" and ends in a "K". The other a "D" and ends with an "O".
We're going to hear all about how we left "Value" on the board or we shoulda taken this guy or that guy. It's all fun but it's ignorance at it's best. You simply cannot grade out any draft before they even hit the field. Three years down the road? Fine. When you can look at individual performance and how well they have matured or not under Coaching at the highest level. That is the only time to effectively grade a draft. But some will do it immediately and I laugh everytime I see it being done.
Now, if we start making moves like getting rid of Weeden, not re-signing Mack and Haden, letting Sheard go, letting Schwartz go, benching a Taylor or Gordon, then we have a problem Houston.
I'm letting the record do the talking. Hit on the 1st rounders and I could care less who we take in rounds 2-7 in any year. The record will do the talking for us.
And I'm telling you guys right now, if we hit about 3 quality Free Agents and hit on our guy at 6 this year, we may just be talking playoffs in 2013. For sure in 2014.

I agree. The ultimate measuring stick is what we do as we move forward. If we start making goofy picks, sure...many had him pegged.
I am not talking about picks individual posters didn't want...we have that every year. I am talking goofy picks. There are lot's of posters who know a bit about it, a few I like are Mour, AttackDawg, and CleveSteve. It's rare they agree with each other on what we need most and who we should pick, just as I might disagree with them or who we pick, but they aren't advocating goofy picks, so when the Browns select a guy you don't want, it doesn't make it a bad pick. That is unless we do start selecting players who by all accounts could have been had way further down the line.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

Actually, that's a pretty ignorant way to look at this. Check out the predictions thread. Everyone and their Ma knows that we will have a better record even if we miss on every draft selection, as we have enough young, returning talent who are supposed to take a natural leap going forward, especially a healthy TRich, the WR group and Weeden in his 2nd season. The OL is set and gelling. Same on D and they're 1 year ahead
This regime has been handed the best possible situation: one of the youngest up and coming teams that has proven to be more than just competitive COMBINED with lots of cap space to make splashes in FA. So, they're going to reap what H&H sow in the first couple of seasons

Yet me and Tacker and many other good posters on here have a pretty good track record doing this. If you think being a fan means accepting everything, and call it wet AFTER it rained for 3 years, so be it...I call em like I see em. I'm willing and hope to be proven wrong by Banner and Lombardi. I'll watch their 1st offseason...if it's anywhere near the epic disaster of an offseason Mangini had here, I'm confident enough to call them out for it on the spot, just as I gave em props for the coaching staff and trash Banner for Lombardi, you see? Good move = applause. Bad move = trashing

Again...ignorant at best. If you could care less on 2nd to 7th rounders...imagine this roster without Schwartz, Gordon, Little, Rubin, Ward, Dqwell etc...yeah, just hit on the 1st rounders Every idiot could pick a decent player in teh 1st, the chances are well over 50% to "hit" or stumble upon a solid player just by going with Kiper's board. Good GMs and good teams seperate themselves from bad one's IN those 2nd to 7th rounds and even UDFA

Go read the prediction thread...EVERYONE says that and it's not because J&J have brought some magic spark with them. The fact that everybody says that they do not have to do much right to make this a winner speaks volumes...less is more, let's see if these stooges agree, but I wouldn't bet on it, as they already are continously talking "building this thing the right way" as if this roster needs a complete overhaul

The only other positives are that he knows people and seems intelligent.
How about this tool not attending the Senior Bowl because he's too busy studying the Browns roster?
I didnt hear that. Maybe its because he's just Banner's lap dog...and not really the VP of player personnel. That'd work for me!
Maybe he's watching practice on the NFL network like i am. Haha.

I don't really have a opinion at this time other then to say that from my experience, when the board likes someone it goes to crap in a hurry, so now that most are against, it will work against them as well.
I can only speak for myself, but over time I've learned from experience.
The very definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over gain expecting different results. In this case there's every reason in the world to think this isn't the right guy for the job.
So for once I'm going to call it the way it is rather than the blind hope of the past. I'm not quite sure that plays into your theory but I hope you are 100% right. That would be the best possible scenario for everyone involved.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

jc http://www.foxsportsohio.com/01/24/13/Se...amp;feedID=39971. Not every head coach was here. But every team that has a top personnel exec had him here with the exception of the Browns. Now, that's not a huge deal as the film of every practice will be available, and the Browns' full college scouting staff was here doing its usual work and research. But none of the guys who will sit at the head of the draft-day table -- Joe Banner, Michael Lombardi, Rob Chudzinski -- have had much (if any) exposure to this crop of college players turning pro, and the countdown to the 2013 NFL Draft isn't going to slow down. 3. Different strokes for different folks. The Bengals use their coaching staff to drive draft decisions more than most teams, so being here, doing interviews and making impressions was more important for the Bengals coaches than it is for most. The Browns are still hiring a coaching staff, might still be trying to add to their personnel department and still have to get the new honcho(s) introduced to their scouts and the prospects in this draft. There's time, but this is what happens when change is the one constant. 4. The Browns scouts come to town for full-throttle meetings the week after the Super Bowl. Presumably, the coaching staff will be in place by then. Name tags might be necessary, but that week will be used to officially get the new thing rolling. There's plenty of time to make up for whatever time has been lost, though a potential change to a 3-4 defense could be a little tricky since those in place spent the fall scouting for the 4-3.5. The Browns pick at No. 6 in the first round, then don't pick at No. 40 in the second round because they used that pick last summer on Josh Gordon in the supplemental draft. The Browns' pick at No. 6 was probably not here at the Senior Bowl this week. There's something resembling a good chance that pick will ultimately be a pass-rusher, and BYU's Ziggy Ansah is a top talent. Is he that good? Where will the Browns go with that pick? Probably not to him, but again it's too early to tell.

When it comes to #3 there are 7 other teams going through that process as well right now and it could be said of anyone going through a coaching change.
#1 should be a huge concern for all Browns fans who can possibly take off those rose colored glasses for just a minute.
#4 represents yet another change that will take time and draft picks to implement initially, instead of building on what we already have. Yet another "plan" that will take time no matter how they wish to "market it to the fan base".
