The Cavs could use some of their expiring contracts (Walton, Gibson, and Miles) to take on salary and get another draft pick.

February 21st is the trade deadline, thoughts?
i brought up my thoughts on being a facilitator in a Garnett or Pierce trade with my brother and he mentioned that why not just bring in Garnett ourselves. his skillset ages well even though he is 36yo and he could actually set a defensive tone with our youngsters. and, he's only making $12mil/year for 2 seasons after this one, so he limits our immediate cap-space but not the future (when we need it to keep our youngsters).
we have a bunch of assets (both young players, picks, and cap space) to make such a move if we wanted to make it. I agree that Garnett makes more sense than Pierce (who already seems to be falling off this year). not sure 36yo Garnett is the guy to cash in our assets for though.

I don't see any reason why the Cavs would trade for Kevin Garnett.

If the Cavs were the 6th seed, sure. They aren't, so it would be kind of silly. And why would KG want to come to a worse team? The Celts, even without Rondo, are still better than the Cavs.
I wouldn't mind trading for the entire Thunder roster.

I'd pass on KG. I wouldn't mind an older vet on the team, but I would think someone a bit younger than 36, with that kind of salary.

that's what I was thinking too, but, given the need to instill some defensive prowess in the youngsters and how Duncan is aging (similar skillset to Garnett), I'd at least give it some consideration.
and to Punch: the Celts (w/o Rondo) better than the Cavs w/ Garnett? I'm not so sure about that for this season and I am quite certain that will not be true next season. I agree Garnett would want to go to a more ready-made contender though.

Wouldn't be surprised to see him in Miami for one last run.
I do love that Ray Allen went there. Boston fans don't think their crap stinks. They think everything they do is the greatest and nobody wants to leave their team for a better situation. Whoops.
Once Garnett and Pierce are gone, we'll really see how Rondo does when he's not surrounded by surefire hall of famers.

oh, no doubt. it's annoying. ESPN does their 5on5 thing and the reaction from the Boston writers is hilarious. one of them actually thinks that Pierce and/or Garnett will just retire rather than trying to win a championship with a team other than the Celtics.

Boston would never trade any of their guys to Miami. Also, what is Miami going to give up to get Garnett or Pierce?

I forgot that they extended him this summer.
If things don't work out with Rashard Lewis, maybe they do a swap there. Lewis gives you a decent look for the time being, then he's off your books, and I think by then Boston is looking to re-tool.
I see Celtic fans a lot like Steeler fans. The NFL didn't exist before the mid-1970's, and the NBA did not exist between 1987 and 2008. Freaking lol

Rashard Lewis is making a little over $1 million. Garnett is making over $11 million. Lewis is washed up. That trade has a 0% chance of even being a conversation.

I agree. Miami has three trade assets: LeBron, Wade and Bosh.
I think it's lame that Ray Allen went to Miami, but that's mainly because I think the "if you can't beat them, join them" ring-chasing mentality as a whole is lame.

Remember after 2011 when "LeBron for Howard" was a legitimate conversation?
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?

I don't really care. The media loves them, but their fans (all 3 of them) aren't nearly as annoying as Boston fans.
I wasn't much of a fan of Ray Allen when he went to Boston, not a fan of him now, but I just love how that move put Boston fans in their place.
Although I love the Celtics fans on my facebook saying the focus is now getting Dwight Howard. Like they can't ever just accept the fact that their team isn't good and will have to go the route of actually building it yourself, they just assume they're going to strongarm another franchise player from someone. Maybe they can get Bill Russell to go take the GM job in Minnesota so they can get Kevin Love.

Yep.
On paper it wouldn't be a bad move. Howard would've given them interior defense and rebounding, the two things they lack the most.
In reality? You'd be a fool to make that deal.
I wonder if LA looks to deal him if their record is in the bottom five two weeks from now.

If you're a contender do you really want him?
I think the only place he could work for sure right now is Miami, and that's because there are so many egos and big names there, what's one more? That and I think Lebron is to the point where he can make anybody look good.
What does that say about Dwight Howard that the Lakers don't want him? A team that was rumored to be offering him long term money after next year?

That would be pretty smooth, and so NBA if they deal him, Kobe gets some mystery "injury" and they get a high pick, and Howard comes back and signs.

They wouldn't be able to re-sign him if he left. His Bird Rights would go to a new team and the NBA now has a rule in place where you can't re-sign with the team that traded you for a certain amount of time.

Aye, good call.
In all honesty, he won't get dealt, especially if that's the case. Things would have to be really bad, and I think we'd have heard a lot more by now.
More than anything I think Dantoni was just not the right fit. Mike Brown probably wasn't either, but that's on ownership for not handling their business sooner. You can't expect to have every option when you fire your guy that early into a season.
Still a long ways to go to, they got a big win yesterday. Even if they get in as a 7th or 8th seed, that's a pretty dangerous low seed to deal with.

I think it's a full year now that you can't sign with a team that trades you. Used to be 30 days. Call it the Ilgauskas Rule.

I think Lowe nails it on teams targeting Pierce but he says Kanter/Favors when I think that Al Jefferson makes a ton of sense for them.
Utah Jazz - Pierce + protected 1st rounder for Boston - Al Jefferson
Utah gets the SF they are lacking right now for a big man they are unlikely to re-sign. Boston gets back Al Jefferson whom they make a building block piece with Rondo moving forward (they need a window for a re-up with Big-Al or they wouldn't give away that 1st rounder or make the 1st rounder dependent upon them re-signing him).
And, Boston can still flip Garnett for more pieces.

most other teams and I would agree. but, Boston fans are fickle and they'll hop aboard a fast-track rebuild more than a slow-track one. Al Jefferson+Rondo+(something for Garnett)+other stuff seems like it could compete.

fair enough (though he failed in both of those moves. Jeff Green is now an anchor on their payroll and they didn't get Mayo and made Ray Allen angry enough to leave).

Major issue with that trade idea is that the Celtics already have legitimate 4s in Sullinger and Bass...Theyve no need for a 4.
The one move that wont happen that Id look into as Ainge...would be to get Rudy Gay. Pauls contract ends sooner than his, so it wont cash strap the Grizz as long as Gay's. The Celtics would get back an active 3 who can replace Paul at a price they can handle, because Paul makes big money.
But...
In all Boston isnt moving anyone. Theyre going to ride this out, and Paul is going to retire a Celtic. That is just going to happen regardless. KG, they cant move him because no one wants a 36 year old in a trade...he isnt going to make anyone better long term. He will stay in Boston. He already said he wont play for anyone other than Doc. He'll retire before he leaves...
Both Paul and KG will retire in Boston, hopefully Doc has the fortitude to bench those guys and let them become moderately paid backups as their careers wind down.

How much longer can Gee start? After scoring 0 points tonight in 28 minutes, you can't get that from your starting SF!!! There has to be an upgrade on our bench, D-league, trade, hell even a street FA. I really liked him but he has not progressed at all this season.
I know some want to fail so we get a better draft pick, but he is almost unwatchable. Kyrie and Tristan are playing there asses off and it's disgusting what they are getting from Gee.

Gee's lack of consistency on offense is what will make him a backup in the long run. However, he can defend, which will allow him to stay in the league, and be a contributor.

I wish he could hit a 3pt shot. his defense with Miles or Casspi's 3pt shot would make him an extremely useful rotation player.

Good for the kids. Cleveland Cavaliers' Thompson, Zeller and Waiters selected for NBA's Rising Stars game | cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/...t_river_defaultCLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cavaliers All-Star Kyrie Irving will be joined by three teammates for NBA All-Star Weekend in Houston next month. Forward Tristan Thompson, center Tyler Zeller and guard Dion Waiters have all been selected to join Irving for the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge on Feb. 15. The game features current rookies and sophomores who were selected by a vote of NBA assistant coaches. Thompson, the fourth overall pick in the 2011 draft, is averaging 11.0 points and 9.3 rebounds in 46 games and has 17 double-doubles. Waiters, the No. 4 selection in this past draft, is second among rookies averaging 14.5 points in 38 games. Zeller, the 17th pick last year, is averaging 8.3 points and 6.2 rebounds in 42 games. Irving was named a reserve for the Eastern Conference All-Star team last week and is line for a possible start due to an injury to Boston's Rajon Rondo.

There is something satisfying about your team not making a gay trade
We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

It looks like Calderon is going to Detroit. The Pistons aren't a bad team, it will be interesting to see how they do with a real point guard. Monroe/Knight/Singler/Maxiell/Stuckey/Calderon/Drummond/Bynum is not a bad eight man rotation. They just need to stay out of the playoffs this year and hope to get lucky in the lottery. If they wanted to they could really go all in on the playoffs this year and trade Maggette's expiring contract for something good.
I really don't understand this trade for the Raptors. While Gay is a good player he isn't great and is getting paid like he is. At best this just makes the Raptors a perennial eight seed. Don't get it.
Memphis gets out of Gay's bad contract. They now have Ed Davis and Darrell Arthur, which is kind of redundant. I would expect them to move one of those guys now.

Anyone watch the Pacers? They are a good team because they are a historically amazing defense but are still one of the worst offensive teams in the game. They have one threat in David West, Paul George is passable but the rest are atrocious. I can't wait for a team to just deny West the ball and try and force it down to Hibbert and make him beat them.
I was pretty wrong about Indy, I thought they would be a 5/6 seed but then again who could account for a historically great defense. Best defense I have ever seen.
