So in a perfect world...
1. Draft Dee Milliner for CB 2. Draft Jordan Reed or Dion Sims for TE 3. Sign Paul Kruger, Connor Barwin, orKShaun Phillips for OLB 4. Sign Jarius Byrd for FS 5. Roll with Weeden for one more year. If he succeeds in Norv's system then GREAT. If he doesn't, next year is the perfect year to sell the farm for a franchise QB ... with a legit team already in place.
I actually like this, however, signing Alex Smith to push for competition isn't a bad idea. Plus, I don't believe he'll cost much considering he got fired.

We can't "sign" Alex Smith, because he's under contract with the Niners.
The only thing we can do at this point is to try and trade for him if we want him. That would probably mean giving up a draft pick or 2.
I would not want to trade away a draft pick for Alex Smith, unless he only costs a 6th or 7th round pick.
I somehow think that San Fran will ask for more than that, at least to open.

How conveniently that you forget to give props to who left this cap heaven...the same Holmgren regime you bash at every turn. Also, none of us knows what Lerner dictated, as it was hinted several times that he asked to limit expenses to make this sell as attractive as possible I also invite you to look at last year's FA crop and cherry pick the 5 players that were worth it, have fun: http://www.coldhardfootballfacts.com/content/all-2012-nfl-free-agent-signings-through-friday/14420/

In the four stages of FA, (looking, considering, shopping & signing,) I expect we'll be big players in the first three, and make a couple somewhat minor moves in the fourth.
If we trade for Alex Smith, I'll be surprised but not shocked. He would be the biggest move. On one hand I don't see him fitting the "system", on the other I can't ignore the Norv Turner connection. I'd see it as a very expensive short term fix.

Interesting link, that has the cap number of every team listed at the end and this blurb:
http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/story/21676714/jets-cowboys-among-many-teams-in-sticky-cap-quandaries
The Browns have about $30 million in space and will be big spenders under new owner Jimmy Haslam and team president Joe Banner. Many in the Steelers organization believe Wallace will end up with their division rivals in Cleveland (Haslam was a former minority owner of the Steelers), and the Browns could make a play for a pass rusher like Kruger, too. Should Vick become available, he too could be in play -- this new regime badly wants to upgrade from former first-round pick Brandon Weeden -- otherwise Alex Smith might make sense, among others.
I was under the impression we had something over 40 million in cap space? or is 30 million what it takes to get to the minimum?

You enjoying his staph are ya ? Not sure why you would say that. If you really want to make an argument of why free agents don't come here. Than give specific reasons other than one who comes here and gets an injury.
Bentley backed out of an agreement with the Eagles to come here. And in "06" he was considered one of the best free agents if not the best. He chose the Browns. Unfortunate what happened.
As far as free agents. Just because a player is available and has a big name to him. Doesn't always mean he is a fit for the structure / needs of a specific team.
I'm sensing something here.. I think its that he might be a troll..

I don't think Manny Lawson is a head scratcher at all. His forte in college was rushing the passer, and he'd do more of that here. Even if we draft a starter, we'll still need at least one more guy to rush from the outside.

yes, that is a big point at OLB. we need at least 4 guys there and currently might have 1 (if Sheard can transition).

I still think we're ganna Sheard's hand in the dirt at DE more than standing up at OLB this season...
I doubt Horton just goes complete 3-4 this year... He's too smart..

or he might just have Sheard rush more often than not from OLB.
or we might trade with Arizona. They hired Todd Bowles as DC who is a 4-3 guy (Eagles DC last year). Arians is a 4-3 guy too.
so, they could use a 4-3 DE like Sheard and we could maybe get back Rhodes(FS), Acho(OLB) and a 3rd round pick?
then sign Quentin Groves as our pass rusher OLB off the bench (FA) with Acho and get Moore for our other OLB slot in the draft? or Spencer in FA and Milliner for CB2?

Give props, huh? For losing.
Wait...you want people to applaud the previous regime for leaving a bunch of cap space which came at the cost of fielding a loser. Makes perfect sense.

So which is it? You're giving props to Holmgren then turning right around and saying he didn't have a choice. Talking out of both sides of your mouth doesn't make for a convincing argument.

I also invite you to look at last year's FA crop and cherry pick the 5 players that were worth it, have fun:
Cortland Finnegan Ben Grubbs Mario Manningham Vincent Jackson Martellus bennet Laron Landry
I'll let you spin that around and try to manipulate those names. We could have used any of them.
Now let me give you another one: Alex Smith. God knows he'd have done better than Weeden, and we wouldn't have been looking at replacing the QB right now. We'd be able to focus on other positions.
The Holmgren dictatorship failed and so here we are. They don't get credit for giving us a wealth of cap space when the cost of that space came at 3 years of losing, nor do they get credit when there were several viable free agents who could have paid immediate impactful dividends to this team.
They failed. Get over it.

They did indeed fail to win, but they did some good things also. The cap space is good, we do indeed have better talent on this team then when the got here so from that perspective,, they did ok
But not nearly as good as I expected from a Holmgren lead team.
I don't care how you slice it, Holmgren is a coach.. that's it.

You're lucky that I don't have enough time these days for my usual Frog BS alerts, as I've read a couple of awful posts from you again....the couple days off after the beating you took somehow reinvigorated you...you just keep coming back with the same crap, lol. Hats off for the persistency, I guess Anyway, we both know what this roster looked like when Holmgren took over. He had Thomas, Mack, an injured Dqwell and Rubin, that's it. So you posting overall records for the past 3 seasons is revisionists history and proves next to nothing, as the plan was to consistently get younger, speedier and better....and that was accomplished. We got better from season to season, everyone without frog eyes saw that. It was a long term plan and even good NFL talent needs a couple of years to mature into winners. How about you compare the W-L records with our board's "predicted W-L records"? That's be much fairer and not just stupid revisionist history. Why do you think that most on here already expect next year's team to win 6-8 games? Guess they saw something in that crappy 5 win team J&J inherited, huh? I give the past regime props for building a young, talented team, as I've never seen a more cohesive roster since 1999 fighting through an entire season like last season. That chemistry is a direct result of the draft and spend within strategy from the FO. It was the right plan long term as you don't need some expensive FA that's gonna turn useless once your young guys get there. You sign FAs when your talent base is getting there, Heckert repeatedly said so. It made little sense to add a FA to win 1 or 2 more games "maybe" short term. You add when it makes sense....this offseason makes sense and everything indicated that Heckert would have spent some money too, but we'll never know. I remember when people kept saying that Mangini did the "dirty work", the groundwork, which he never did as his roster he left over was slow and old as dirt. Heckert otoh did just that....J&J are getting handed one of the youngest rosters with enough talent AND a cap heaven. If you think that's fair grounds to compare Holmgren's regime with Banner's, that's obviously your biased premise since you've stuck your head deep into Joe's and already write apologies in advance. Just posting the rosters both inherited will suffocate that premise in a heartbeat though, if you're really preparing going there... As for the FAs, thanks for proving my point, which was: you have to cherry pick 5 names and still come up with VERY questionable signings like Manningham and L.Landry out of a list of 125 names (and 2 of your list signed 1year deals)....of course we could have used one of the FA that turned out good, but out of the 125 names there are more BUSTS than booms. Steelers and Ravens never sign big name FAs, so stop acting as if it's absolutely necessary to become a contender. Keep talking about your next Jason Campbell flop named Alex Smith, more quotes that will be fun 12 or 24 months from now.

So far in their short tenure, neither Banner nor Haslam have tipped their hands about anything. That's good news.
Are you talking just about free agency with this statement? Because their hand has already been tipped a couple of times so far. Holmgren being let go, Heckert being let go, Shurmer being fired (though everyone knew that was happening), Lombardi being hired (that was leaked when JH first bought the team with Banner). All those were leaked to the media well in advance. This regime hasn't really had tight lips so far. Why should free agency be any different?
I fully expect us to be BIG spenders in FA this year, just as the media has speculated.

It really is kind of funny... the year before Mangini got here we went 4-12... both years with Mangini here we went 5-11... the 2 years after Mangini was gone we went 4-12 and 5-11.... and people want to deify some and crucify others during this 5 year stretch of ineptitude...

More twisting after you're real point was sunk like a paperboat.
You wanted to try and find 5 free agents that were worth signing. I listed more than 5, and there are more. But now your point is that those names are questionable signings?
Manningham was a "questionable" signing? 42 catches in 12 games and he's 26.
Landry started all 16 games and had a career year.
Any one of several guards would have been instant upgrades over what we marched out there.
Patterson and Skrine are better than Finnegan. Not.
Wait...I'm not playing this dumb game. You tried to prove there weren't good free agents to be had. When several were named it's suddenly a case where they aren't any good. People don't fall for this you know.
You used to have talent at this. What happened?
Not gonna get dragged down into this crap again. Have your last word, then another, then some more. We had money to spend and didn't spend it on numerous viable upgrades to what we have which wouldn't have broken the bank. Their plan yielded 3 straight years of 5 or less wins. You can't revise wins and losses.
Enjoy beating your head against the wall.

As soon as we turn that talent and cap space into W's, then we will have something... as of right now, we have 5 consecutive 4 or 5 win seasons with a variety of management triangles (thanks for that term Sam) in charge and people are picking sides on who was better... until we win something, it's not better.

Manningham was very questionable.
He averaged a whopping 10.7 yards/catch in 12 games with 10 starts.. That's abysmal for a WR. He had 1 TD for the year. He had the fewest yards of any year in his career, except for his rookie year where he barely saw the field.
By comparison, Travis Benjamin played in 14 games as a rookie, starting 3, and had 18 receptions for 298 yards and 2 TD catches. That was with a rookie QB throwing to him much of the time as well.
Manningham was an "OK" level WR for the Niners. He wasn't special by any definition of the word.
I'm not sure how well Finnegan played, because I didn't watch a lot of Rams games, but I do get concerned when a CB had 100+ tackles. That tells me that teams throw at him a hell of a lot.
Guards are Guards. Most teams find their Guards in the 3rd round to UDFA.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

In the 3 seasons prior, Manningham averaged 14.5, 15.5 and 13.5 yards per reception. His drop came from the offensive plan, not his abilities, and his signing was considered a success by most.
Finnegan has always been known as one of the most physical corners in the league and has always been a high-tackles guy. By all accounts he also was considered a success.
And don't get me started on our guards again.
We could have had better talent on this team without ever sacrificing the future cap and probably won more games.
But enough about what was. It's what will be that counts, and there isn't any reason we can't add more pieces. In fact, I'm absolutely certain we'll spend in free agency like we haven't in the past. It'll be nice to add some quality pieces for the first time in several years.

I'm on the "Browns did not do all that they could" side of free agency.
Building a team through the draft is not an exclusive deal. You can add in young talented guys in their prime and not interupt building a young core.
What Mangini did was not that.
But yes I was less than happy the last few years about the amount of cap space we carried. I didn't like it at all because it felt like we weren't doing all that we could to produce a winner.

Entirely possible, but that has more to do with two ligaments he tore in week 16 than performance.
Brent Grimes is probably the biggest CB on the market this year, and he's an unknown because of an achilles tear. He also missed time in 2011 and will be 30 when the season starts. The guys after him are even bigger question marks due to injury, age, and level of play.
I think we're better signing linebackers in free agency and trying for Milliner in the draft or another impact position.

Linebackers and a receiver in FA with Milliner in the first round would be amazing. Hell, maybe we could even sway Ed Reed to come play for us, him and Ward would be interesting with Haden/Milliner

I would not want to trade away a draft pick for Alex Smith, unless he only costs a 6th or 7th round pick.
I somehow think that San Fran will ask for more than that, at least to open.
I would say that we could wait to see whether the 49ers want to keep Smith on the roster and pay his contract to be on the team? They can cut him and save themselves some money.
49ers options with Alex Smith.
