I see nothing that makes him any more than that this coming year.
It's like Smith. People are peeing their pants over him, but San Francisco was willing to let him play the market last year, and they took him back only when he couldn;t find a home anywhere else.
Is he an appreciably better QB this off-season than last? I don't think so. Why would any team go gaga for him this year when almost everyone passed on him last year?
Yeah, they only signed him to a 3 year 24 million dollar contract. He will only counted 9.25 mil against their cap last year.
They must really think the guy sucked!

You are trying to rest your laurels with what one writers opinion of the situation is here. We'll see how it pans out.
I'd be willing to bet that Smith ends up making 7-10 mil somewhere this coming season as an NFL starting QB. He ranks well above many NFL starter right now as much as people would like to pretend he doesn't.
that's a lot of money for what is now a back up, but is sure doesn't sound like they didn't think he could do the job or why pay him.
If it wasn't for the money involved, I'd think they'd love to keep him. He was doing pretty well before injury.
But that pesky CAP may get in the way.

I think that most people would agree he would be ranked ahead of several NFL starters. The question is how high do you rank him?

Considering that he went 13-3 last year and was 6-2-1 this year before getting concussed, I'd say that he's worth at least a 19-5-1 record. Of course, that's a total of 4 years of wins by the Browns!
Yeah, I'd give him a shot at the job. I might even take his contract on as it stands.

How many teams had him in for a visit last year?
How many teams made contract offers for him last year?
The Niners didn't get Manning, and they weren't sure whether or not Kaepernick was going to be ready. They needed a fall back position, and Smith gave them one.
While $8 million/year (3 years/ $24 million) is a lot of money, how many teams make that kind of offer to their franchise guy?

"The 27-year-old Smith met with Miami on Sunday but ultimately decided to stay put with the storied franchise that drafted him first overall in 2005. Smith said his talks with the Dolphins during a 5½-hour meeting "seemed serious at the time."

And we had "serious" talks with Kelly, and were on the verge of signing him ..... bringing in an army of lawyers to work out the details ............
Smith had "serious" talks with the Dolphins that never even resulted in an offer, that anyone knows of.

I am going to toss a name other that Smith (Moore, Campbell) into the mix, and probably run for cover.
But there is a chance that Carson Palmer may be let go by Oakland....
His salary is pretty healthy...

I mentioned him earlier as a possibility.
I don't see anyone picking him up at $17 million, or whatever he makes ...... but if he becomes a free agent, I could see teams, and maybe the Browns, make a run at him.
We'd have a lot to offer a guy like Palmer too ..... a solid OL, great young RB, up and coming young WRs with size and speed .......
Supposedly the Raiders have told Pryor that he's going to get his shot this year.

Palmer looked washed up but no OL and his receivers didnt want to finish their routes afraid they might get hit. I dont know on that one. Compete with Weeden and see what happens i suppose.

He threw for over 4000 yards in 15 games, with 22 TD and 16 INT. He completed over 61% of his passes at 7.11 yards/attempt, and had 49 pass plays of 20+ yards. That's washed up?

Pass on Cassel
I have seen him a few times over the past few years, and I would not consider him an upgrade.

This. Anyone who wants to use the eye test to validate Mourg's point can just watch the Browns/Raiders game from last year.

yeah, he was the king of the down by 2 scores in the 4th quarter, so let's throw for an extra 150yds and a TD QB last season.

I seem to recall him doing OK last year in some of the games I saw him play in, Against us he threw for 351 yards and 2 TD, 1 INT.

and 84 of those yards and 1TD came down 2 scores late in the 4th quarter as the Browns played prevent and just made sure to keep the clock running. we gave away those yards to ensure no big plays and the win (TD happened with 1 second left).

That sounds right.
Again though, I seem to remember seeing him play a few times and he was "OK". He was better than the average type QB. I'm not saying that the guy was great by any stretch ...... just that he would probably be considered an upgrade if available.

j/c http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/8952930/dwight-freeney-re-signed-indianapolis-coltsThe Indianapolis Colts have informed Dwight Freeney, the franchise's all-time leader in sacks, they will not re-sign him. "I was very surprised to hear they wanted to go in a different direction," Freeney said in a text message to ESPN's Ed Werder. "It would have been nice to retire a Colt ... My plan is to hit the free-agent market and see who has interest." More From ESPN.com Dwight Freeney will hit the free-agent market for the first time, but his options could be limited, writes Paul Kuharsky. Blog Freeney, who turns 33 on Tuesday and was set to become an unrestricted free agent, has seen his sack totals decline in each of the past three seasons. The seven-time Pro Bowler had just five sacks last season, his lowest total since 2007. Freeney was a cornerstone of the Colts' defense and became one of the most popular players in club history after being selected with the 11th overall pick in the 2002 draft. "Few people have meant as much to the success of the Indianapolis Colts as Dwight Freeney," Colts owner Jim Irsay said. "He has been a dominant player, which is all the more impressive considering his size for his position, and he has won a lot of games for this franchise. Dwight was an artist, a joy to watch, and the dedication he put toward his craft was a rare quality. We will miss him, but look forward to his future induction into the Hall of Fame and Colts Ring of Honor." Despite starting only the final eight games as a rookie, Freeney still broke the Colts' single-season franchise record with 13 sacks, was named the AFC's defensive rookie of the month in November and December that season and finished second to Julius Peppers in balloting for defensive rookie of the year. [+] EnlargeDwight Freeney Scott Boehm/Getty ImagesThe Indianapolis Colts informed Dwight Freeney, the club's all-time leader in sacks, that they will not renew his contract. Freeney won battles on the line of scrimmage with his blazing speed and spin move, something teammates and opponents continue to try and emulate. He created nightmares for opposing linemen not only because of his ability to get to the quarterback but to knock the ball loose in the same motion. He teamed with Robert Mathis to form one of the league's most feared pass rushes for nearly a decade. Fans appreciated his celebrations, a simple salute to those who showed up on Sunday afternoons, and players embraced his simple, down-to-earth approach to the game and life. Freeney is the franchise's career sacks leader (107½), the only Colts player to win a league sacks title (16 in 2004) and his seven Pro Bowl appearances are tied for fifth in franchise history with Lenny Moore. The only Colts with more Pro Bowl selections are Peyton Manning (11), Gino Marchetti, John Unitas (10 each) and Jim Parker (eight). Marchetti, Unitas, Parker and Moore are all Hall of Fame members, and Marchetti is the only Colts' defender to appear in more All-Star Games than Freeney. The Colts also will not re-sign oft-injured receiver Austin Collie, who played in just one game last season after rupturing a patellar tendon in his right knee. Collie, diagnosed with three concussions over the past 22½ months and who left another game during that span with what team officials described as "concussion-like symptoms," spent four seasons with the team. He had 257 catches over his first three years.

While Freeney was not bad in the 3-4, he is one of the best in a 4-3. I would expect he returns to his comfort zone.

Is there any Dome team, lacking a pass rusher, that's prime for a SB run?

I believe I have read this season is the first where every team has to spend at least to the salary cap floor so we will have to spend whether we want to or not. I think the best thing happened when the Indians just spent a bunch of money, it will almost force the Browns to do the same. Here are the three I want:
Dannell Ellerbe Paul Kruger Andy Levitre
Give me those three and I'm happy, not sure of the money but that should put us right where we need to be cap wise, and really hurt a division rival, and strengthen our weakest unit (LB).
And make our OL one of the top 3 in the league. Then you keep Weeden in the gun over 75% of snaps like SD (Turner) and Car (Chud) last year and you will see a major improvement in his game.
Weeden was better out of shotgun (eight touchdowns, seven interceptions, 79.1 rating) than under center (six TDs, 10 INTs, 67.7 rating).

i know levitre will cost more than vasquez, but i'm not sure he's better. i'm also thinking we have a better chance at signing vasquez (who worked with Norv in SD).
ellerbe (ILB - baltimore), k.lewis (CB - Pitt), vasquez (OG - SD), and Spencer (OLB - Dallas)
probably asking too much to get all 4 guys, but that would be my goal. jammer a fallback for lewis, philips a fallback for spencer.

NFL franchise tag window opens on Monday By Brian McIntyre | Shutdown Corner Ryan Clady is expected to receive the franchise tag (USA Today Sports Images) Monday is the first day of a two-week period where NFL teams may designate one player with the franchise (or transition) tag. The deadline for teams to use the tag is March 4. The 2011 collective bargaining agreement changed the formula for determining the amount of the franchise tag, which is no longer calculated by determining the average of the five highest cap numbers at a position or position group. To determine the percentage under the current agreement, the amounts of the franchise and transition tags at each position from the previous five seasons will be added up and divided by the sum of the league-wide salary cap number from the previous five seasons. For the uncapped 2010 season, the league uses the average of the 2009 and 2011 salary caps. The resulting percentage will be multiplied by the league-wide salary cap for the upcoming season to determine the non-exclusive franchise tag and transition tag amounts. The current league-wide salary cap number has yet to be determined, but according to a source with knowledge of the formula, the percentages for each position have been released to certified player agents. Below are the percentages and the projected "non-exclusive" franchise and transition tag amounts, based on a projected league-wide cap number of $121 million: Quarterback Franchise: $14.654 million (12.111 percent) Transition: $12.856 million (10.625 percent) Running back Franchise: $8.085 million (6.682 percent) Transition: $6.857 million (5.667 percent) Wide receiver Franchise: $10.365 million (8.566 percent) Transition: $8.723 million (7.209 percent) Tight end Franchise: $5.968 million (4.932 percent) Transition: $5.109 million (4.222 percent) Offensive line Franchise: $9.668 million (7.99 percent) Transition: $8.568 million (7.081 percent) Defensive tackle Franchise: $8.313 million (6.87 percent) Transition: $6.925 million (5.723 percent) Defensive end Franchise: $10.993 million (9.085 percent) Transition: $9.002 million (7.44 percent) Linebacker Franchise: $9.462 million (7.82 percent) Transition: $8.223 million (6.796 percent) Cornerback Franchise: $10.677 million (8.824 percent) Transition: $8.947 million (7.394 percent) Safety Franchise: $6.804 million (5.623 percent) Transition: $5.904 million (4.879 percent) Punters/Kickers Franchise: $2.928 million (2.42 percent) Transition: $2.656 million (2.195 percent) A second tag for Wes Welker would cost the Patriots over $11 million (USA Today Sports Images) A record 21 players received the franchise tag in 2012, with 12 of those players signing multi-year extensions prior to the July 16, 2012 deadline. Of the nine who played out the season under the one-year tender, eight are eligible to be tagged for a second time, at a 20 percent increase over last year's tender amount, while Cleveland Browns kicker Phil Dawson, who was franchised in 2011 and 2012, would receive a 44 percent increase if he received the franchise tag for a third time. Here's how much it would cost their current teams to franchise those nine players again in 2013: Atlanta Falcons cornerback Brent Grimes - $12.337 million Cincinnati Bengals kicker Mike Nugent - $3.185 million Cleveland Browns kicker Phil Dawson - $5.486 million Dallas Cowboys linebacker Anthony Spencer - $10.627 million Detroit Lions defensive end Cliff Avril - $12.726 million Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe - $11.418 million New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker - $11.418 million San Francisco 49ers safety Dashon Goldson - $7.454 million Washington Redskins tight end Fred Davis - $6.535 million http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdo...OBR+Newswire%29

There is only one that I would care to keep and that's Phil Dawson and I'd make him a 'fair' offer and let him either sign it or not. If he didn't, I wouldn't fret it one bit. Every single one of the others should be allowed to walk.

I wouldn't mind us keeping the two tight ends, especially if we can't address that position in the draft (very likely, considering the other needs we have).
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

I guess we have re-signed Gonkowski to a future's deal ....... and we'll almost certainly bring in a couple of UDFA to go along with Cameron, and maybe another free agent. I wouldn't mind seeing us bring back Watson for another season if we can't find another decent TE ..... but I don't know if he'll want a one year deal.

I actually have a feeling that we'll see fewer tags than in previous years. I don't know why, but just a feeling I have.

Man the Browns are definitely going to look different next year, I don't really expect any of those guys back. Outside shot with Watson. Cribbs? With Banner there, I doubt it. Want Phil back, but have my doubts.

I don't care to have either one on the roster. If the new regime thinks they can utilize them, then there's little harm in keeping them but I would not be upset if they are allowed to walk.

If the Browns Tag Dawson again, he'll be paid QB money.. The article makes me think is it worth the money.

Sign Grimes, One of Bmore's Linebackers, Trade for Kerry Rhodes, Sign Flacco.
Fin.
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?

Dawson would make over $5 million with another tag.
That's almost certainly not going to happen. I would be beyond stunned and flabbergasted if it did.

Dawson would make something like $14 million if we tagged him again.
