Browns Show Interest in DL Jason Jones

http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/4860/jason-jones

With Desmond Bryant being rumored as well as Jason Jones, this may be just another indicator of the body type and style of play the Browns are looking for in their DE: tall, long, 275-300lbs w/pass rushing experience.

I don't think we'll be seeing any 315+ guys. But that's just me.

Correct. And if my armchair GM assessment is correct regarding the DE profile, these four guys won't be kept simply for NT depth.

yes, I think Taylor and Hughes will be used at DE. if that is your read as well, then we agree (and that is why we are targeting the different body-type DE's to get what we don't have on the roster already).

Btw, it'd be easier to list the FAs we're "not interested" in...guess it's a mix of us having so much money and/or Lombardi having to loose a mouth to his former media buddies...

It is at least good to see that we are interested in guys that can play... in years past when rumors started that we were interested in a FA, my typical response was, "Who is that?"

Cook would be a decent FA pickup... Norv's offenses have always been TE friendly.

Jared Cook is terrific! He'd be worth whatever it took to get him here. A lot of times people are still looking at FA contracts through the old prisim of the previous CBA. Veterens get paid more under this new pay scale.. and rookies get paid less. Also, the Cap is going to keep going UP! And by quite a bit. So signing a contract for somebody this year that is considered steep, might not be so steep in 2-3 years.

For example, we paid out a lot of money to Joe Thomas a couple years back...but it's actually starting to look like more of a bargain now. And in 2 years, considering he's still playing at a high level... it'll look like a much better deal than it was thought when he signed the contract.

If they can actually convince Jared Cook to come here... pay the man!

Meyer the TE from Oakland would be cheaper, plus we need to land either Kruger or Avril, I like ILB Brinkley fom Minnasota, and we have to address our secondary both S and CB along with OG ... Why Spend BIG $$$$$$ on the Big names when we can find some gems and sign our FA's to extensions like Mack who should be our biggest priority and Haden and Ward for example .... JMHO

So you aren't against signing some big names, you just don't want to spend it on Cook?

Cook has been a one dimensional underachiever since College..I don't get it

How about we actually at least reward underachievers that have turned it around some and improved? Like TE M.Bennett? or how about we dish out fat contracts to the many players out there that actually have played well above AVG at their position (Cook has not, I can easily name 12-15 better TEs in the NFL)...guess that makes too much sense

Cook is that shiny toy that costs too much and you don't need anyway...dude hasn't even played in half his team's snaps because he can't (since he's huge, it's more like: "won't") block a damn...

I have nothing against Cook except spending 6-10 mil on a TE when there will other good TE's for half that price, and no I would think spending big money on a pass rusher and even a DB would be ok, if not necessary ...

Browns | Interested in Captain Munnerlyn

Sun, 10 Mar 2013 20:07:48 -0700

The Cleveland Browns have been in contact with the agent of impending free-agent CB Captain Munnerlyn (Panthers), according to a league source. Munnerlyn has excelled while covering slot receivers in the nickel role. New head coach Rob Chudzinski also has some familiarity with Munnerlyn from his time in Carolina.

You know, I was just thinking how much this defense needs another sub-5'10" cornerback.

Sew him and Skrine together and you have Captain Skrine! The speedy, 11'4", four-armed wonder CB.

This kid is a very good CB he makes BIG plays and a very good cover CB .... He could be a starter or at the very least a great nickel CB and he won't break the bank ... JMHO

I'm thinking we go after two corners. One of the bigger name guys (Rodgers-Cromartie, Smith, Lewis) and one of the mid-level guys. Having three corners is a necessity today.

'NFL Free Agency Rumors: James Harrison “Would Love” To Play For Cleveland Browns'

http://fansided.com/2013/03/10/nfl-free-...eveland-browns/

Mar 10th, 2013 at 7:30 am by Josh Hill

Memo to all NFL teams: James Harrison is open to playing for you. Earlier on Saturday Harrison was finally cut by the Pittsburgh Steelers and almost immediately — as if out of spite — said he was open to playing for the New England Patriots. Harrison backed off that statement later in the day but he changed out Patriots and replaced it with Browns as Harrison’s agent has expressed an interest in his client playing for Cleveland next year.

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Harrison’s agent Bill Parise said he thinks his client is a “good fit” with the Browns and could see him playing there for Ray Horton in 2013. But despite being a nemesis for the Browns in the past, going as far as to concuss three of their players in recent years, Harrison is actually not a bad fit for the Browns.

Harrison is an Akron native and went to college at Kent State, so he does have ties to the Cleveland area. There’s also the Ray Horton connection as before becoming the defensive coordinator with the Cardinals and now the Browns, Horton was a defensive assistant with the Pittsburgh Steelers while Harrison was with the team.

But while he makes sense, Harrison is not going to be a first choice for the Browns when it comes to filling the hole at outside linebacker. Paul Kruger remains the Browns No. 1 target in free agency, but if they’re outbid by another team, Cleveland very well could look Harrison’s way for help.

His age is an issue, but his tenacity is not and his vulgar swagger might be the tone-setting adrenaline the Browns new defense needs moving forward. However, the Browns were the second team in 24 hours that Harrison either directly or indirectly showed an interest in, so it’s looking like this won’t be the last team to be linked to Harrison over the weekend.

(end)

P.S. Harrison will turn 35 in May.

I'd love him for a year or two on our D!

Such has been the Browns philosophy for the last 13 years.

"Ohhh let's trade down we have soooo many needs to fill"

"Let's not overpay for an impact player when we could 2-3 stiffs like Scott Fujita"

Times have changed. Looks like the new regime realizes you build around IMPACT players and fill in around them with the draft. Browns have by and large had no impact players or guys worthy of being built around over the years. That needs to change, and looks like it will starting now!

I did not say we should not go after impact players and I know you have to overpay for some but BIG $$$$$ doesn't always mean "Impact Player" ... JMHO

And I never suggested dumping big $$$$ on "non-impact" players. In fact, I've been saying stay the hell away from Kruger because I think that'll be the worst contract of the off-season.. and I think he'll revert to being very average.

The point remains... this "spread it out" philosophy has been employed by the Browns for years and netted zero results (other than losing every year). The need to build around impact players. And they need to sign a few of them in Free Agency (Avrill, Cook, Ellerby, Wallace, Jennings, Lewis/Cason/DRC, etc). They need to do what they need to do to get guys like THAT.

Well there's this from a few days ago:
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/03/09/browns-reportedly-interested-in-antoine-cason/

And then this morning on the San Diego AM Sports talk network, "Hacksaw" Hamilton reported that the Browns were looking to sign him to a $6 million a year/4 year contract ... and almost made it seem like it was a done deal. I've been trying to find another source, but can't seem to come up with something other than the "interested" part. Cason might be nice, but I would NOT want him for anywhere close to 6 mill a year.
