So Moore remains a Dolphin! I thought that was the most likely (and desirable?) competition for Weeden. I know the new FO keeps a tight lid on their plans, but it is very quiet. Anybody get the feeling there is a blockbuster deal in the works?
There is no blockbuster deal possible at the QB position.
LACKLUSTER on the other hand...
I'm thinking this offseason will be anything but "lackluster". Can you say Weeden, our 1st rounder, and ? for....Philip Rivers?

With Cutler (and I no longer believe that possible), our offense would command instant respect. If our FO wants to get much better, and quickly (for that is what they said early on), then some type of big deal at the QB position is required. Having said that, I would be OK with sticking with Weeden for this coming season...

LOL,, Our Oline would commence to beat the living daylights out of him if he tried that here...
Cutler the athlete, I like. Cutler the man,, Not so much. I'd have to work hard to balance those two things.

Even in 2010, Colt did better early on in the year than he did later in the year.
Early on, Mangini protected him.
McCoy started out with a very strong game against the Steelers. That was the "hope" game. No one had seen him play in the NFL, and no teams knew how to defense him.
He then played the Pats and Saints, and threw for a combined 250 or so yards.Mangini played defense, ran the ball, and protected the heck out of McCoy. He threw mainly in very safe, easy situations.
He then played well against the Jets and the Jags ..... but took 6 sacks in that Jags game, and got hurt. Even then he was rolling/running into pressure, but he was a rookie, so that was somewhat expected.
When he returned, he played against the Bengals, and did well. He seemed to always play decently against the Bengals. Then reality hit, and the Ravens and Steelers figured him out .... and he completed about half his passes, with 1 TD and 6 INT.
He was figured out at that point. The WCO gave him a slight reprieve, but defenses quickly figured him out in that offense as well as they had in Mangini's offense.
I had a great deal of hope for McCoy following his rookie year. He attacked to some degree, and he created some big plays in the passing game. However, those plays disappeared in year 2, and did so in an offense that was supposed to play to McCoy's strengths, and where he was supposed to thrive. He just never figured out how to make quick reads and quick throws ... especially outside of 5 or so yards from the LOS.
While part of McCoy's problems were in the Shurmur offense ...... the fact that he never figured out how to attack man cover was his biggest problem. I broke down so many of his games in 2011 where he was something like 75 yards got the game heading into the last 10 minutes of the game ....... down by 2 or more scores ...... and then the opposing defense traded yards for time, and he "suddenly came alive". However, as evidenced in the Raiders game that year, all a team had to do was go back to pressure/man cover, and it was all over.

This tells me we weren't interested in Moore. Or that he doesn't want to compete for a starting job. Moore's people definitely would know if he had a shot a our QB job.

Won't beat a dead horse...but it was then that I saw his mobility never come back from the ankle injury that season. I didn't see it as having them figure him out...considering we protected him n threw in very safe n easy situations. I don't see what was there to figure out. That is according to your observations. They didn't figure out his mobility...he lost the competitive edge there due to the ankle not healing all the way.
As for Mangini...heck we are talking about Win with 29 yards of air offense n Win with 9 passes...lol
I think 250 yards in the Air was like Air Mangini...lol
Sorry I saw him very promising after that 2010 season. I'm sticking with our Offense in 2011 n 2012 probably the worse I ever seen with the talent that we had. I'm sure in our tenure of INEPTITUDE since 99 we had similar statistical woes. Maybe my expectations were too high???

I think the question still lingers. Was the QB play so bad it was ranked in your worst? Was the coaching so bad it was ranked as your worst? Or was it a combination of both?
I saw what I felt was a regression in Colt in 2011. I also feel I saw some regression in Weeden the second half of 2012. It was like Weeden started out getting better until around mid-season, then took a step backwards.
I don't know the answer to the above questions, but I seriously question Shurmers ability to develop QB's.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Not that it matters, because pro football is a business, but I do remember reading not long ago that Phins fans like Moore, and wanted him to stay, and Tanehill himself shared that same feeling.

The difference is that Weeden will take the sack or fling it out of bounds while Colt will try to buy time in the pocket or run for yardage.
Way too often we see:
Weeden - Drops back, holds the ball, cannot find an open receiver, holds the ball, no pressure he continues to hold the ball, no pressure so holds the ball, looks, looks, feels the pressure and tries to force the ball in somewhere which gets knocked down or intercepted.
Colt - Drops back, cannot find the open receiver, holds the ball, no pressure, panics and breaks the pocket, rolls out to the right (always to the right), holds the ball, now feeling pressure because he rolled out into the end or blitzing backer, he makes a panicked throw and hits a wide open defender right between the numbers for a drive ending interception.

What Jester says is true. But what we don't know is whether the coaching staff got into Weeden's head about avoiding interceptions causing him to hold onto the ball much longer than he instinctively would.
I'll be interested to see how Chud and Norv play to his strengths rather than try to force him to be something he's not.
I don't think BW will ever be one of the greats. But I do think he can be a winner. And in the end that's all I really want.

Colt McCoy will turn out to be Brandon Weeden's only competition http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2013/03/colt_mccoy_is_brandon_weedens.html
In response to the story Browns can take QB Matt Moore off their radar after he reportedly re-signed with Dolphins, cleveland.com reader rovingbrown says Colt McCoy might turn out to be the only competition for Brandon Weeden.
"It is not like there was much they could do just at this moment. There is an opportunity for trades and free agents after the draft, though I doubt a serious starting QB will be available (kind of like right now). I would hate to see draft choices traded for an experienced QB. Draft one late if at all.
Looks like keeping Colt is the only real competition. Well, Weeden's strong arm gives him a bigger upside. I guess we will get to see which is most effective, the big arm or the "it" factor. Maybe Weeden will get "it". Maybe Colt's arm is big enough. Maybe Browns get lucky in the draft. (still waiting)

IMO DA would be a welcome addition to the team. Vet with Exp. in a Chud system. I know he/we burnt some bridges when he left but I for one would welcome him back.
Is Mallet still a possibility or has that been squashed?
QB gurus (I say that with respect) what are your thoughts on Mallet?
My last (and only) impression was he had a live arm but was extreamly rattled by the pressure in the tOSU BCS game.
As for McCoy, great kid, tough kid but I dont think he has the arm for this system or the make up to lead this team to the next level. I would have traded him after concussion gate and drafting Weeden. Send him to a team like GB or NO for a late round pick. IMO It would be better for all parties involved.

I came to a conclusion maybe its not the young QBs...maybe we should not evaluate them too much on their ONE Season in this ridiculous system. The more I studied the system I was like Man this sucked. So I go back to Colt as a nothing rookie didn't take any reps with the starters...pressed into service cause Delhomme n Snake Wallace went down. Say what you will of Daboll fact is he was a little imaginative he went with what he had. But he still stretched the field in his O...something Shurmurs O didn't remotely do.
This year I'd like to get a good look at Weeden n if possible Colt as well!
JMHO
I agree. It's easy to look back and say they both sucked, but how will they perform in a different system with better coaching? I'm hoping the this new system solves the QB situation, and I'll trust in what they see in these guys. If they bring another QB aboard, so be it, but to be honest, I doubt they will.

Another option I hadnt considered until now is Carson Palmer if he is released by JOakland. Wouldnt be a long term solution but we would be getting younger. Good arm, good pocket presence, knows the division, would want to stick it to Cinci. Thoughts?

The Plain Dealer routinely highlights a reader's comments on a story. There is absolutely nothing behind that except for a McCoy fanboy's hopes that somehow Colt will become an NFL QB this off-season ..... despite his consistent failings thus far. I could just as easily write that the Browns will sign DA, and it would be just as newsworthy.
