Jadeveon Clowney is a large man. He's listed at 6-6, 272 pounds. He is a defensive end for South Carolina, if you were unaware.

The NFL scouting combine took place two weeks ago. At that event, four running backs, 14 receivers, one linebacker and three safeties ran better than a 4.5-second 40-yard dash. No defensive lineman ran better than 4.57, which is no surprise. Montee Ball and Giovani Bernard, two of the best running backs in the draft, ran it in 4.66 seconds and 4.53 seconds, respectively. Bernard was a fantastic punt returner for North Carolina last year as well.

Is Jadeveon Clowney human? Do we have confirmation? Men that large should not run that fast.

It's mind boggling that Clowney had a faster reported 40 time than Bernard, who beat NC State with a 73-yard punt return in the final minute last year. Combine numbers are generally a bit slower than the school's records, and South Carolina might be pumping up its superstar a bit by telling Rinaldi that time, but we're willing to bet that the 4.5 number isn't too exaggerated, if at all. And consider that players who go to the combine practice for weeks with trainers on things like sprinting form, so they have an edge on Clowney there.

It's hard to find a better physical specimen in college football than Clowney. Good luck to the offensive linemen who have to block him this season.

We need to start McCoy and take Haden partying.

I'm too excited for the Air Coryell offense to call for an all out tanking. But I would love to see some maneuver done to get this guy. I have to assume he can tween to OLB. I can't imagine the top 3 being anything but the 2 QBs and Clowney (in some order). Sadly if we end up in position to take him we might be better off with one of the QBs.

Teddy Bridgewater and Johnny (Football) Manziel. Though I realize now I think both are freshman and won't be available until 2015-2016?

Fairly certain to be the top 2 QBs taken next draft....if available. From what I can tell they will be in 2015.

But honestly there are some excellent QBs next draft (like 4-5 are better than Geno Smith). Tajh Boyd is arguably as good as the other two. After that there is mixed list with Aaron Murray, Logan Thomas, AJ McCarron, and Zach Mettenberger.

Manziel will be 3yrs removed from HS and eligible to jump to the NFL if he so chooses in 2014.

Bridgewater is a true junior next season and may also jump to the NFL is he so chooses.

and don't forget McCarron or Boyd.

Indeed. That said, Clowney is maybe the best defensive prospect in the last 20 years, and that might be selling him short.

I take him over anybody if I had the first pick. He would be signed before the draft. Turning his name in would simply be a formality.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

I agree, along with many others. He will be the first pick overall, and it won't be Cleveland getting him.

Nobody ever said the things about Courtney Brown that they are saying about Clowney... not even close. Heck Courtney Brown was struggling to even be considered the best draft prospect from his own team that year.

Mel Kiper, love him or hate him, was right when he said Clowney is to defensive ends what Andrew Luck was the QBs as far as the NFL draft.

Good thing we changed to a 3-4!

LOL.. I believe in scheming to your players strengths but you don't NOT change your entire defensive scheme because one guy is coming out of college next year and there is a real good chance you wouldn't be a position to draft him any way.

Yeah, he was a 'can't miss' guy. 4.5 40 time, 6-4, 270, 4.0 GPA.

I think if his time came with today's intensely saturated media, he would have similar hype.

No I'm sorry you're wrong.

He got no where near the press of Clowney and he never was the athlete that Clowney is. I was around, watching and evaluating for both and it's not a comparable situation.

Of course he was considered a "can't miss" guy.. that's why he was a top 5 pick in everybodys mock draft and ultimately went #1... Had he not been injured he probably would have been a very good DE for a long time too.... But 2 years before he was draft eligible people weren't salivating over him.... Nobody compared him to Peyton Manning from a few years before.... I think that physically Brown and Clowney are very similar.. but from what I remember in Brown and watching Clowney, Clowney has a nasty streak that Brown just never had..

I liked Brown a lot that year but for the record, after watching Couch get absolutely destroyed the year before, I really wanted Chris Samuels from Alabama at #1 that year.

I will also say that I hate the fact that people use that one hit by Clowney where the RBs helmet flew off as some kind of barometer as to how good he is and why he will be the #1 overall pick... it was a very solid play, don't get me wrong, but in reality he shed the blocker, read the play perfectly and made a nice TFL, forcing a fumble... the fact that the kids helmet flew off is what makes the play so dramatic, and that's basically a fluke...

You are right DC, Clowney has a nasty streak Brown never had, otherwise they are very similar ...

I think it was also how quick he got back there. It seemed like he was there just as the ball touched the RB's hands.

The thing I love about him is that he doesn't take plays off. He doesn't always get to the QB, but he is 100% coming after you every down.

I don't even know that he shed the blocker. Watch the vid. Not a single blocker put a hand on him. Now, I'll give him credit for being fast/quick, and realizing what to do.........but even the Michigan linemen have said "we didn't block him. I thought he would get him, he thought I would get him."

The thing about that play that stood out was "how in the hell does Jadaveon Clowney go unblocked?!?"

A guy that is also worth watching - Anthony Barr of UCLA

Yeah, both those guys are absolute beasts.

Barr is really underrated. The guy led Division 1 in sacks without an ounce of pass-rushing technique. Imagine what some coaching can do for such a physically-gifted player.
