I just hope they don't squander any opportunities. They have the cap room, so just do it!

Frankly, I'm surprised that the Seahawks let Forsett go. He was always a quality player.
Per UDFAs, any chance Onterrio McCalebb goes UDFA? Small dude, but in the low 4.3s... Would take the chance on him for sure, special teams and 3rd down. Not sure if he can add any weight on his frame or not - at 5'10", I'd think he could get from 168 up to the 180s and stay in the 4.3 range.

Yes, I should probably rephrase that and say, "We are interested in every free agent. . . unless he played for the Cleveland Browns in 2012."

I don't know if that's true 100%. I do think that Cribbs is gone, Not sure about Dawson. Watson could be back if they don't land someone they feel is better. Beyond that, yeah, I agree, it's the end of the road in Cleveland for the rest (and Cribbs of course)
The only reason I'm questioning Dawson and Watson is frankly, is there anyone out there better than Dawson? Answer: Not really.
There are better TE's then Watson available, but getting them could pose a problem. Given that both Turner and Chud love TE's, (ok, no jokes ok) Watson might be the only one we can get.
I do think that Maricic (sp) is gone soon also. I wonder if they like Smelley?
I don't think they dislike our Oline (guards mostly) as do some posters on this board seem to. But I expect them to add depth.
We are really gonna need help with LB's and CB's and Safety.
So all this leads me to believe that there is a chance (slim) that Dawson and Watson could be back.
Banner was asked if they know who they are going to try and retain,, he said yes. When asked who, he said he's not saying.
What's that mean? It could mean that he intends to retain a few of our own but won't say it. It could mean he intends to retain a few of our own if he can't upgrade or it could mean that he knows who he's trying to retain and the answer is None of them.
Take your pick
The picture will start to get clearer in less than three hours.

I think Marecic and Smelley are both gone, and we're probably going to sign an UDFA FB.
I wouldn't mind either, I'm tired of hearing about them, especially Marecic. He's become a running joke.

I think you are right about both being released UNLESS Chud and Turner see something in Smelley as a possible TE. I kinda lean towards it not happening, but Smelley did a lot of that at Alabama.
The next FB here will not be in the same mold of Marecic or Smelley IMO.

I read somewhere - ESPN? PFT? - that the Ravens might have to cut FB Vonta Leach to meet Ellerbe's demands. He was a recent Pro Bowler, I believe.

Ideally, Marecic is a good blocker who can catch the ball (we all know now that he is. . . Smelley). Smelley is an average blocker who excels at receiving.
So you think that we will go with a pure bulldozer fullback? Turner had Lorenzo Neal in San Diego for a little bit, but for the most part he has guys like Mike Tolbert, Larry Centers, and Jacob Hester. Guys who can block, but are pretty good with the ball in their hands.

Leach's cap hit in 2013 is $4.3 million. That is crazy for a fullback in today's NFL.

Yeah, I'm aware of that. Like I said, it could be that Banner is waiting until he either knows he's upgrading the position or that he isn't before going for Watson.
With Dawson, there really isn't an upgrade out there available. Some good guys,, yeah, Billy Cundiff is good,, But he''s no Phil Dawson.. Of course, he's not going to cost anywhere near as much either.
Could be they feel as if they won't need 50 yarders anymore? dunno.

Got to get use the sarcasm on the board. No emoticons make it confusing...lol
Smelley seems to be a FB that this new offense might use (H-Back stuff similar to Casey w/Texans)??? Marecic they might like his intellect n keep him around.
Both have to get better on Special Teams to think about making the roster.
But they will be here till Cut week. I have no clue of the dynamics of the offense we will run to figure out the FB if any we will utilize. Maybe we just go w/Taylor for short yardage situations

I think they go for the bulldozer. Something tells me with Weeden still being a bit unproven, they are going to look to use our OL and Richardson as a strong point.
Maybe a year from now they look to sign/draft that guy, but I have a feeling Norv and Chud want to lean on the run. With a healthy T-rich, a new offensive outlook, and maybe an OL addition that's what I'd be looking at.

For the record, as I am a former Brownschat refugee, I was a big supporter of Marecic when we drafted him and talked about him often on that board. I thought he fit the WCO FB mold primarily because of the receiving skills he exhibited at Stanford. I thought he could be the next John Kuhn in Green Bay. At this point, I was absolutely wrong. Although I thought his blocking ability was better than most fans wanted to admit (because they were already pissed off because his receiving was sooooo bad) but he truly did fail at catching the ball numerous times. I think he is better at blocking than what Smelley showed, but still I would guess neither would be targeted as our next FB because they aren't the new regime's "guys" and they don't cost much. That and track record, at least for Marecic, is not good.
But I think the characteristics of the FB are changing in the NFL and the next FB will be expected to play more of a role in receiving while still making an impact in the running game. The perfect mix would be someone like Vonta Leach.

Leach has a total of 749 receiving yards in his ten year career.
I agree with you about Marecic. People loved Vickers so much that whoever was the next fullback people were going to dislike from the jump. Vickers blocks were more violent and explosive which got people excited. He also played with tons of emotion. Marecic blocks pretty well, but he doesn't really blow anyone up.

Seriously she keeps saying we might get Keenon Lewis from Steelers...Horton his position coach when w/Steelers. Steelers not making an offer. JMHsharing

That was like 100 years ago! But then again, I guess an argument can be had that's how old our WCO was that we ran last year. So that makes our FB look even worse!

Who ever she is - she is reading not reporting with knowledge. Looks MidEastern. Reporting to the guy with Dumbo's Ears...They actually make a good couple. Of course the Jet girl looks like Model...lol
Now they just made a list - big pass rushers where will they be landing...Avril, Usi, went through them all except Kruger...they are acting like its a done deal. Ok...I don't mind as long as it works out. We got the $$ we got the youth that need a Vet! And we might have another youthful Investment!

That was the single worst play I've ever seen from a professional football player.

Who in a Brown's uniform with that name of Marecic on the back were you watching that you thought he blocked well??????????
Owen got blown up and pushed back more often than he laid a decent block. There is zero way any of our RB's have any faith or trust in him. In addition, I think he's dropped the ball virtually every time he has had it thrown to him, regardless of it being a good/decent/bad pass. He is a wasted spot on the field, a wasted spot on the roster (seeing he doesn't even really show up on special teams) and he was a wasted pick.
As stated, he def makes his case (although I wouldn't agree) to be the single worst player in Brown's history.
ALL JMO, of course...

Apparently this poster has never seen Terrell Smith or Lawerence Vickers. Those guys know how to block. There's someone else out there that can replace Marecic for sure.
I'm sure Marecic is a swell guy, but the swing player from Stanford has gotta go
