The rules here are very simple to follow. I've never been banned and I've had a great deal of heated debate, often holding the minority opinion. You have to go out of your way to get banned.
It's also poor form to bash a forum that you're currently a refugee in. If this is a fake forum, there's no need to be here.

Not only that, but this was provided as an alternative to BrownsChat when that garbage came out. This is an extension of Dawgtalkers, the original Cleveland Browns forum. This is as real as it gets baby.
When someone sent me a link to here, I was like, "It still exists! Thank God!" (Thanks for the link DawgMichelle. Thanks for the forum Purp)

I didn't mean to insult the board or anyone in particular. My meaning was, that it's easy to insult someone then hide behind the rules. And that a *snicker* which seems so horrible to so many is really the most benign of responses on a message board. That anyone would be so thin skinned as to think that an insult is amazing to me......
As for my being a troll or "negative"? For the past two seasons I was anything but negative. I liked the direction we were heading in and thought we had made some progress. But that is the past. I believe I can state my reservations about moves made while still giving these guys a chance. I like some of the things they have done. I can't WAIT to see Richardson in a Norv Turner offense. The guy that ran that Dallas offense with Emmit? Should be fun. I don't even mind the Chud hire. He did a decent job here as OC. And of the candidates we had a shot at getting, he's probably at or near the top(I wanted Billick). So, I'm willing to give this a go. The problem is making yet another switch on defense. While defense in general is becoming increasingly obsolete, I still want us to have the best the rules will allow. So I have real concerns and this signing didn't thrill me...... that makes one a troll here does it? Interesting.....

What makes your posts so intolerable is the vile you spew about everything the front office has done/is doing. And, as you stated, the main reason you do that is because no one (on the other board) gave Holmgren/Heckert/Shurmur a chance.
If you were reading this board you would have seen that the great majority of the board was extremely upset Heckert got fired and even more upset when Lombardi was hired.
Speaking for myself now, I would have liked to seen Heckert retained as I think he was doing a pretty good job rebuilding the roster. Heckert is no longer the GM, there is nothing that can be done about that (I guess in your case you can complain). We can wait-and-see how the new front office does (if you haven't noticed we haven't played a game yet) and then react when they do something stupid. So far the moves they have made have been pretty well received by the majority of the people "in the know" and on this board. I know you don't like/understand the moves, this is most likely because you are blinded by your crusade against the new front office.
Being contentious just because you didn't get what you want is one of the most immature things a person can do.

No one accused you of being a troll for stating your opinion. They're calling you that because you're acting like a petulant child. Who is going to be nice to someone who says:

Your damned right that makes you a troll. You need to get your head straight and start toeing the company line. Banner is the chosen one,the messiah. All the bad drafts Lombardi was a part of wasn't his fault because he wasn't the man in charge. But he was responsible for all the good selections. Most importantly,Pilot is the best run truck stops in the entire universe, with the cleanest showers. You should memorize those tenets and repeat them as often as possible. You do that and in short order peolpe will be praising your posts, instead of calling you the troll that you are.
Indecision may,or maynot,be my problem

I understand your impatience with the direction it seems like the new FO is going in. Let me try to address some of your concerns about the d-line spirit.
In Horton's defense he likes to generate pressure from his d-line just as much as he does from all other parts of the D. He blitzes OLBs, ILBs, CBs, and safeties, but likes it all to start from the line first. While in Arizona in 2011 he generated 13.5 sacks from his d-line(1 each by Nick Eason and David Carter, 3.5 by Darnell Dockett, and 8 by Calais Campbell) and in 2012 he generated 10 from the d-line(6.5 by Calais Campbell, 1.5 by Darnell Dockett, and 1 each by Nick Eason and Ronald Talley). Thats 13.5 out of 42 in 2011(about 32%) and 10 out of 38 in 2012(about 26%). That's a lot from your d-line in a 3-4. So he needs those guys to be aggressive.
He also likes to play a lot of different tackle combinations. He played 7 different d-linemen in 2012 and 6 in 2011. So it does look like he needs at least 6 d-linemen. I hope this helps and if it doesn't, well at least I tried, with a reasonable argument.

Just wanted to say I appreciate this forum and being allowed to be part of it. I have been a member of the Cleveland Browns forums since it started. This ain't the first time it's been started over. Funny how it's always happens right before FA and the draft. I also had an account on this forum back when it was first made but I guess it got deleted due to inactivity. No big deal.
That being said, I always did have some ehh I don't know what to call it... maybe kinda sorta hard feelings that so many left the Official forum to come here and didn't come back. I always wanted folks to be more active on the official forums sponsored by the Browns even if it was run a bit unfairly at times. Just sentimentality I guess. I really hated it when Overtoad left because he was my favorite poster along with Eotab. Just cant beat the football knowledge those two have IMHO.
Still I wish folk from both forums would not critize each other for being members of either forum like its something terrible. We are all just Brown's fans after all. It just feels like there is this undercurrent of hostility from some members of this forum towards the other and vice versa(I know several folks that also have been great on both sides). I guess I would just ask for a little more patience from members of this forum towards members of Brown's chat because a lot of us are feeling hurt and betrayed at being thrown out on the street. I mean at least for me it's RAW and I am just ticked off about it. I assume others are too. I bite my tongue quit a bit so to speak. Since there are a lot of new people I have to get used to it's hard to know when someone is just ranting or attacking. I think we are all taking things a little too personally because of that.
I would also ask my fellow refugees to tone down the rhetoric until you know this forum and the posters better because folks here don't deserve to ribbed or goaded just because the Browns organization cant find their head from inside their arses and manage to competently manage their own forums. I get so disgusted when I think of it. I can't believe the media hasn't mocked them for it.
Anyways I hope we can all get along and I am thankful this forum is here and full of competent and incompetent posters just like they are meant to 8) Would be a dull and boring place with no one smart enough to talk to and people who just seem crazy to liven it up lol. All in all its always great to be with fellow Browns fans! Go Browns!

Unless the rules over there have been modified the rules here are exactly the same as those on the BrownsChat. BrownsChat rules were taken directly from this board, (which is an extension of the original DawgTalkers which was the official board of the Cleveland Browns until '06 when BrownsChat started).

We already HAD defensive tackles. We NEEDED a number of other positions. Like CORNER for instance. As it stands right now Buster Skrine is our starting corner opposite Haden.
I'm not going to get into any of the "Bored Drama" but I can't shake the same thought Spirit is putting out here.
Our secondary was razor thin last year, and we've lost Patterson/Brown.
I like what I"m reading/hearing about Des Bryant but I'm getting impatient about our cornerback situation. If we want to be blitz-happy attack, we need corners that can "Man-up." Not to mention the free safety spot.
I'm Going to wait and see what Banner does. Fingers Crossed. But if we enter the draft with Skrine at #2, I sense big problems. Especially with Philly sitting at #4. We all know they would love to punk Banner with Millner

Spirit is simply trying to stir the pot and get a bunch of other posters to start bashing the new regime. That was a common practice on the other board. Every move they made was met w/venomous skepticism. Spirit is upset that not many here are willing to crucify the new regime before they even play one game.

Yeah... I can see all of this happening minus... I don't think anyone would spend their pick in the first round of the NFL draft just to punk someone. (I could see someone doing it in the 4th)

I just find it hard keeping both Taylor and Rubin at the money they're making to have one of them simply be on a rotation.
Rubin is getting paid big time next season ($7.757M), Taylor not so much ($2,202,750).
From Joe Banner (about the defensive line):
Quote:
“Our purpose has been to put together a really strong unit and have some depth so we can rotate if we have any injuries the line will still be one of the primary assets of the team. That’s what we feel like we are achieving. We are not looking to be trading anybody.”
Thanks for the figures. I appreciate it. I knew Taylor's were nowhere near Rubin, but the specifics are great. And it leads into my main question.
For the sake of argument, let's just say Taylor beats out Rubin at NT. Even as a rotational guy, is Rubin worth $7mi+ to sub in on certain packages. And again, from profootballfocus, Horton ran a 4-man front 5% of the time last year, where else could be play? LIke I said, I don't see it at DE. Maybe we just disagree here.
Admittedly I am not versed on 5 man fronts nor the % of times Horton used it last year. Would be interested to hear where people think Rubin and Taylor would play there.
Again, thanks for the contract info.
At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.

Memphis, why don't you think it is possible for either Taylor or Rubin to play at the same time?

Primarily I look at the type of player Horton had in his defensive ends in Arizona. Long body, fast, within a certain weight range and having the ability to put significant pressure on the QB. Maybe I am wrong here but with a more attacking defense, the 320- 330 DE that we've seen in prior 3-4s are not what Horton may be looking for. They exist in other 3-4 defenses I'm sure but maybe Horton has something else in mind.
For example:
Calais Campbell- 6'8'' 300lbs (weight varies by site) and has 27.5 sack in his career. Darnell Dockett- 6'4'' 290lbs with 36 career sacks
Even look further to the prototype of the DEs in Pittsburgh where Horton learned from LeBeau
Ziggy Hood- 6'3 300 Lbs- hasn't played much until now but has 8.5 sacks Aaron Smith- 6'5 298-44 career sacks Brett Kiesel- 6'5 285- 27 careers sacks Even the future in Cameron Heyward is in the same body type range that fits the above comments. Not sure how he will do applying pressure.
Even in some other 3-4 defenses in the league you are seeing that as well. How about in Houston with JJ Watt and Antonio Smith?
I think certain 3-4 defense are getting away from the heavier DEs and leaning on smaller (relatively speaking), faster, more athletic guys that, because of their long body type and speed, can apply more pressure than any Corey Williams, Orpheus Roye, and Shaun Rogers when he played a little DE. I know there are more successful references in that read/react 3-4 but this is a Browns message board and I'll reference recognizable players. Essentially, what I am saying is teams are sacrificing larger bodies and maybe leverage at the point of attack for speed, athleticism, and a disruption of timing at the defensive line IN ADDITION TO what havoc LBs can create.
I don't see Rubin being able to apply pressure on QBs, think he's far heavier than what Horton wants, and would be more suited to be a NT. I think Taylor would be better at applying pressure than Rubin, but again, would not be quick enough (due to weight) to do what Horton wants out of DE. I also see him as a NT. So if one of these two plays NT, I don't see Horton putting another 330+ guy at DE. And because Horton only ran a four man front 5% of the time last year, I see little reason to think there would be significant amount of plays where they would both be tackles in four man fronts.
I think what we've seen with the signing of Bryant, and the high praise of Winn, they both fit the prototype Horton wants in DE. They fit body type, speed, and ability to apply pressure. I wouldn't be surprised if we identified more people that fits this description in the draft. In fact, I hope we do.

General reply here ....
From reports, Bryant can penetrate from the DT position, and is expected to be able to translate to a DE position as well.
Rubin can penetrate from the NT and DT spots, and I bet that he can do so from the 3=4 DE spot. He kinda reminds me a little of Orpheus Roye, with his relentless play, and his ability to do it all, and do it all well. In 2010, as a NT, he had 82 tackles and a pair of sacks. That was against constant double teams. In 2011, with a healthy year, he had 83 tackles and 5 sacks as a 4-3 DT. It is rare that a 3-4 NT can so easily transition to a highly effective 4-3 DT. Rubin did it without even breaking a sweat though.
He was hurt last year, but even then he still played well. (though his numbers were suppressed)
Then we have Phil Taylor. He is a hulking 335 beast of a man. (and 335# might be kind) The more I think about it, the more I think that he is going to play NT. He has massive size, but also has surprising speed and quickness.
Actually, all 3 guys are surprisingly quick for their respective sizes. The 3 of them so right around a combined 1000#, and every one of them is about as nimble and agile as any man that size could be. I think that these 3 men, being allowed to attack the opposing defense, and going to wreak havoc.
I am truly excited. We had probably 5 or 6 guys who fit the 3-4 defense at DL on the roster prior to Bryant's arrival. We had Rubin and Taylor, of course. Then we also had Winn, Hughes, Kitchen, Sanford and Paxson.
That's 7 DL for probably 6 or 7 roster spots. That's not enough, and the depth just wasn't there. Let's face it, Sanford and Paxson are going to have to be classified as longshots to make the team, with Paxson probably the more likely ...... but still facing long odds. Kitchen is a pure NT. He is a big body, who is difficult to move. He might, or might not make the final roster.
So we were really down to 4 guys who could reasonably be expected to make the team on the DL. Taylor, Rubin, Winn, and Highes ..... with another 3 question marks.
Now we have 5 guys who can reasonably be expected to make the team. I would guess that we will take a long look at the other 3 ...... but also bring in bodies to compete with them. Our starting DL is now all but set, with Rubin, Taylor, and Bryant claiming those starting spots. Primary backups will be Winn and Hughes, plus one or 2 others.
I don't see this glut of DL that that some see ....... that somehow forces us to trade one of our starters because we just have too much talent on the DL. I see a talented, and moderately deep DL, that can probably use one more player on par with a Winn or Hughes to complete it.
I do not, in any way, see overcrowding there.

I concede the past 3-4 sounds like it will be different than what Horton will run but I was never overly impressed with Rubin when he played NT.
You're doing it wrong.
In 2010, the last time Rubin was a NT in the 3-4, he led all NFL defensive linemen with 82 tackles. Tackles are not always a great number to judge a linebacker, but a NT with anything over 60 tackles is extremely impressive.

Not every team has a Watt. If you don't have that superstar you have to manufacture sacks from all over. But most football fans know that.

Well the Browns now have 6 defensive interior lineman on the roster. To msake the 3-4 defense work, the team must have 2 speedy defensive ends and 2 rush OLB's. The Browns have addressed 1 of the OLB's with Kruger but are sorely lacking on the other side.
So what to do - some are saying to move Taylor and Winn to the outside and make Sheard an OLB. This is typical Browns football - trying to make a team with players out of position. Sheard is to slow to play OLB - he can rush but will be a huge liability in coverage. Sure Taylor and Winn can move to the outside but neither have the speed to beat OT's on the outside or with inside moves - they are bull rushers suited for the inside.
The Browns might get away with 1 of these guys playing DE with the rush OLB coming from that side but then every team will know where the rush OLB will be coming from. No, the Browns must have 2 DE's that can beat the tackles enabling the OLB's to come from either side.
For the first time in a long time, the Browns actually have viable trade bait with all of the interior defensive lineman they possess. Trading Rubin and his 6 million dollar contract to get back into the 2nd round would be huge for the Browns at this point. They would still have great depth on the inside with Taylor, Hughes, Winn, Kitchen and Bryant all of which could play outside in short yardage situations.
The Browns could then put all their focus in the first 2 rounds of the draft on a pass rushing DE to play opposite Sheard and another OLB or CB. The Browns need another big FA to fill one of those positions while drafting the other 2.
Offensively, the Browns need to invite any and all QB's, WR's, and TE's to camp that they can get their hands on. The defense will have been fixed and the offense needs a couple of playmakers who could be found with an all out blitz on players for the positions.
The Browns are close - I just hope they don't screw this up by trying to play a bunch of guys out of position. Finish the investment - continue adding depth - time to start winning in Cleveland!

Primarily I look at the type of player Horton had in his defensive ends in Arizona. Long body, fast, within a certain weight range and having the ability to put significant pressure on the QB
Memphis, I didn't want to quote everything but that was a good post. I don't necessarily agree w/all of it, but it was logical.
I think that Taylor and Rubin run better than you are giving them credit for. I also think it is dangerous to have lean DEs in a 3-4 because they can't seal the edge as well. A 3-4 defense that can't seal the edge is extremely vulnerable.
I also keep going back to the fact that Horton has said that he is going to be running multiple fronts. We are NOT going to be playing a 3-4 exclusively. I think there is a place for all of them and I am excited about the depth.
You may be right. Maybe they don't fit. Maybe we will trade them, but until we do, I prefer concentrating on how we can use these guys---and that, my friend, is pretty exciting.

Wow, where to start.
I disagree with a lot of what you wrote.
In the 3-4, you need DE who can penetrate, and also hold up enough to help hold the edge. You don't necessarily need speedsters, like in the 4-3 .... you need combination DE who combine size with enough quickness to still be able to rush the passer.
If we look at the "blueprint" defense, the Steelers ..... we find the following players at DE ....
Ziggy Hood, Brent Keisel, Cameron Heyward,
Hood and Keisel are certainly no athletic marvels. They have good size, and technique, and play the defense the way they are supposed to. They don't freelance, they do what they are supposed to do.
Heyward has never had strong pass rushing ability. He is more tenacious than anything else. He's certainly miles away from fast or quick.
The Steelers had one of the top defenses in the NFL last year, and we are following their blueprint.
If I have a choice between Hood, Keisel, and Heyward ... or Rubin, Taylor, Bryant, Winn, and Hughes .... then I know which way my vote is going.
Now the Cardinals do have somewhat more athletic DE in their defense ...... and Horton knew how to use their talents to their best advantage.
Darnell Dockett is a solid DE. He's getting older, but he still has some ability left. He'd not fast, but he has decent quickness. He is a slightly smaller DE, checking in under 300# ..... but he's on the downside of his career.
If I had to choose between him or either Taylor or Rubin, then I would choose our guys. Rubin has that nice explosiveness off the snap, and Taylor would put pressure on a side of the field because of his size and short field quickness. He's never going to be a 4.5 guy, but that's not his role. Nonetheless, I think that our gys match up well with the Cardinals' player at this position.
Then we move on to the other side, and this is probably where we have a true disadvantage. The Cardinals have Calais Campbell at their other DE spot. He has had between 6-8 sacks each year over the past 4 seasons. I don't know if we have a match for that. However, I think that Bryant can be an effective player in this role, and that he will be a guy who has 5-8 sacks for us next year.
Now, on to the OLB. You do realize that most 3-4 teams have OLB who were DE at one point, right?
On the Cardinals, O'Brien Schofield was a 4-3 DE in college. Lorenzo Alexander was actually a DT in college. Sam Acho also played DE and DT in college.
These guys made the jump to OLB. Why do you feel that it is impossible for our guys to do so?
For the Steelers, Woodley was DE in college. IIRC, Harrison also played DE at Kent State. Jason Worilds? You guessed it. He was a DE in college.
Why do you look at Cleveland Browns and say that there is no way they can make the transition, when other teams we are using as a blueprint have had almost every one of their OLB make the exact same transition, and they have done it effectively. Why should we automatically fail?
I think that we're well situated on the DL, and we have some promise at OLB. We're not set there by any stretch, and Sheard could fail ..... but then again he might just succeed.
Overall, I like where we're heading.

Trading Rubin and his 6 million dollar contract to get back into the 2nd round would be huge for the Browns at this point.
I think that would be a huge mistake. He's our only proven NT at this point, and our only lineman with more than 2 years experience. He's reliable, a top tier talent, a great role model and he's not fragile. He's our most valuable resource on the DL.

I just can't fathom those who are preaching and itching to trade away Rube or Taylor. Don't you people understand the importance of quality linemen, and the importance of having a quality defensive line?

I don't see Rubin being able to apply pressure on QBs, think he's far heavier than what Horton wants, and would be more suited to be a NT. I think Taylor would be better at applying pressure than Rubin, but again, would not be quick enough (due to weight) to do what Horton wants out of DE. I also see him as a NT. So if one of these two plays NT, I don't see Horton putting another 330+ guy at DE. And because Horton only ran a four man front 5% of the time last year, I see little reason to think there would be significant amount of plays where they would both be tackles in four man fronts.
Memphis, don't forget Horton can use these guys all across the DL. Rubin may not have speed, but he certainly can apply pressure. If you look over the entire game, he can wear down a LT. Have a couple of fresh guys such as Winn or Bryant switch over to that side. I believe Horton has the ability to play all six guys at each position. Think of film study offenses will need to prepare for the Browns. Browns will not have any one hero but a pretty good combination of guys.

Especially on a team that is ravaged by injuries almost every year. A lot of people act like this is Madden where as long as you have a good starter, you can sign some scrub as a back up.
