http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/9057191/denver-broncos-release-elvis-dumervil-according-sourcesenver Broncos defensive end Elvis Dumervil agreed to a reduced salary, but was released by the team after the paperwork for the new contract was not filed with the league office in time Friday, according to sources. Dumervil's 2013 salary of $12 million was set to be guaranteed at 4 p.m. ET, but he agreed to take a pay cut to $8 million. AFC West blog ESPN.com's Bill Williamson writes about all things AFC West in his division blog. • Blog network: NFL Nation According to a source, both parties reached agreement at 3:25 p.m. ET on the restructured contract. But the team did not get a fax from Dumervil's agent until 4:06 p.m. ET, so it had to release him, according to the source. Previously, Broncos team president John Elway called Dumervil's contract "out of whack." "It's not all about dollars. But when it's way out of whack? Then it's so out of whack that you've got to say: That [salary] can't be it," Elway said Thursday, according to the Denver Post. "Especially when you look at the market and what's out there now. Hopefully, he realizes that." Dumervil signed a six-year, $61.5 million contract in 2010 when Josh McDaniels was coaching the team and before Elway joined the Denver front office. Dumervil had 11 sacks last season, second on the team behind Von Miller. Dumervil led the league with 17 sacks in 2009. The Broncos need more cap space while trying to shore up their interior defensive line, cornerback and running back positions. Peyton Manning will earn $20 million in 2013, and if the Broncos had Dumervil play at his previous salary, those two would have accounted for more than one-quarter of their cap space. Among the pass-rushers on the market this season include Manning's former teammate with the Colts, Dwight Freeney. I wouldn't mind going after him as well. Between him, Sheard and Kruger, we could have a great pass rush and keep everyone fresh.

Well they wanted him to take a pay cut and restructure. If a team - let's say a team who just switched to the 34, has a new owner, and $30+ million in cap space - makes him an offer that gives him a raise, he may not be so quick to take that pay cut any longer.

This just amazes me... will be interesting to see if he ends up signing with the Broncos again or someone else. You know people will be calling him
John Clayton mentioned both the Pats and Falcons as two teams that may look at him... I can't imagine he'd sign with anyone who didn't have a chance at a SB next year... especially if he had already planned on taking a pay cut to stay with the Broncs.

37.5 sacks in the last 3 seasons. I'd say yes.

If I were the Browns I'd give him 10 a year for sure. That being said he will probably resign.

I think he's worth a roll of the dice, but I'd be surprised if he doesn't stay with Denver or goes some place that ha a chance to go deep in the playoffs... as much as I love my team, I'm guessing most FAs don't think the Browns are going deep in the playoffs this year.

Because they had to release him it created a bunch of dead money on their cap. Unless he is willing to to a huge pay cut they will not be able to re-sign him.

And that is exactly what we should do! Getting Dumervil would help us a LOT. The guy fits both the 4-3 and the 3-4 so he's versatile. Call his agent and make him a BIG offer!

Say we sign Dumervil, that gives us Kruger and Dumervil as the OLB.. Cocong or JMJ and DQ in the middle with Robertson and Groves as key reserves..
That leaves Sheard..... under this scenario, he would be a backup or trade bait.... What if we traded Sheard as part of a package to NE for mallet then?? I'd hate to see him go but under what I outlined above it would be dealing from a possible position of strength...

A bit of an update on the situation. This screw-up means that the Broncos will have nearly $5 million in dead cap room next year. Their updated cap room is now $7.8 million. Essentially, Dumervil would have to take a contract of something like $3 million (compared to the original $12 million) this year to offset that penalty and leave them enough room to sign their draft picks. I think he may have been willing to take a small cut since he was in the middle of the contract, but there's no way he takes that big a cut. It seems he will be on a different team IMO. and I'm interested in seeing if the Browns pursue him, which I think they should. He's 29, but I think he's still got a great 3-5 years left, and the Browns are definitely in a good position to take that gamble, especially since he was not expected to be available this season. source

yeah he is a 7 yr guy but I would sign him to a 2 yr deal, It would free us from having to take a pass rusher first, and open the door to move up next year for Clowney

WE GOTTA GET THIS GUY! Someone had to say it! Seriously, I'd really have to think about getting Dumervil. At the expense of Sheard? Perhaps, but that wouldn't bother me so much.

I still can't believe we (and the rest of this league) passed on Dumervil until the 4th round. Even as a know nothing I was screaming for him in the 2nd, irate in the 3rd, and flabbergasted in the 4th (twice). But hey.. Travis Wilson, Leon Williams, and Isaac Sowells all turned out great so I can't really complain.
He is the guy all undersized players should look up to (talking to you Lavonte).
Signing Dumervil would be a nutty thing to have happen, but it would make me happy. Not sure if it would be very cap-smart though.

More and more I am reminded of the Doors lyric, "The time to hesitate is through". This is a chance to get a top tier pass rusher. Something we have passed on consistently since the return. I like Mack, but passing on the bloodline still stings.... Yes, it would take more for us to sign him than other teams, but if he gets 15 or more sacks in our blitz heavy attack it's WORTH it. Especially with our secondary. Pressure is the mantra with this regime and now is the time for them to do something about that. Making this happen even though the cost be high, would go a long way toward my buying in to this regime....
*fingers crossed*

Does the dead cap money go to Dumervil? If so, would he still get it if he were to go to another team?
Cap money is an accounting number that is specific to a particular team based on former players' contracts with unallocated guarantees and bonuses.
In other words, if a player had a signing bonus of $5 million on a 5 year deal, then he was allocated $1 million per year against the cap, even though he is paid the money all at once. If he is cut after year 3, then there are still 3 years of unallocated bonus to be accounted for, and depending on when the player is cut it becomes due either all in one year's cap, or may be spread over 2.
Same thing for guaranteed salaries/bonuses ....... kind of. If a player is released on waivers and claimed by another team, then future bonuses and guarantees would then move on to his new team. Same thing for a trade.
So if a player has a 5 year contract, and has that same 5 year deal with the same $5 million signing bonus, plus guarantees of $5 million in year 3, 4, and 5 ...... and the player is traded or released on waivers and claimed, then his old team would still be responsible for that same signing bonus accounting, but his new team would be responsible for his guarantees once they claim or trade for him, just as if he had signed the contract with that team. (even if he was only claimed for a single day)
However, if the player is released outright, and immediately becomes a free agent, then his old team would still be responsible for his signing bonus as before, and would also be responsible for the guarantees as they became due. His old team would pay those guaranteed monies as they become due, and would have to account for those monies against their cap. So the original team would be responsible for the signing bonus as above, plus the $5 million in guarantees, even though the player was no longer on their team, and even if he signs a contract elsewhere, and no matter how much he is paid elsewhere. There are no off-sets in salary.
Confused yet?
Again, short answer is that dead money is an accounting number for the player's former team, and doesn't travel with the player.

I like how your thinking IF the Browns think mallet can be our franchise QB. Still I think Sheard will blossum in our new system and could be ours on the cheap and is younger than Dumerville. Still you cant argue with the numbers Dumerville has been producing. IMHO he is a proven commodity with a good 3-4 years left.

Maybe, but maybe not. If the Broncos changed the guarantees, then he was right to withhold Dumervil's signature.

My sensibilities are telling me that Kool doesn't have the overall abilities to play in a 3-4, but there's no doubt that he can get to the QB. The big problem for a team like the Browns is that he'd have to be signed as a situational rusher, and he's going to command too much money for a limited role. It really feels like a round peg in a square hole for any 3-4 team.

Is Kool Dumervil?
If so, Dumervil had 17 sacks as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 in 2009.
If not, disregard that previous statement.

Hasn't Dumervil played OLB in the past?
Yep, he sure has. He had 17 sacks as an OLB in 2009. That was the only year he played OLB, and it was arguably his best year as a pro.

Yeah, he did (and I had forgotten), but I can't see him playing out in space these days. I suppose it goes back to wanting your OLB's to rush the passer first. Problem is we just gave a big contract to Kruger. So how would Dumervil fit in? Trade Sheard? Keep them all? That seems like a waste. I think I'd rather trade Sheard.
Oh, and yeah, Kool is actually his middle name. Gotta wonder if he was given that name or if he went all Ocho Cinco...

Seattle had to get a pass rusher, either in FA or the draft since Chris Clemens won't be ready at the start of next season with his ACL injury.

My memory is shot.I thought Elvis mainly played on the D's left side, same side as Kruger. If that is so,Elvis won't be welcomed to Cleveland.
