I don't think it's there anymore.
In any event, I think this means bye-bye Colt. Like the guy, have nothing against him, and I hope he lands on his feet somewhere.

NRTU.
Certain posters can now go huff paint.
I'm not going to point out how many times in the very-recent past that we've blown it by reaching for QB's in the draft out of desperation to replace the previously failed QB whom we reached for too highly in the draft. What I will say is that if we don't draft anyone else and Weeden fails, this'll have been a great move. There isn't a star QB in this draft but if we were desperate to find someone to "push" Weeden we could have easily reached too highly in this one for the next Brady Quinn.
Campbell isn't the QB of the future but he can be a stopgap that bridges us to the next QB should Weeden flop. If Weeden succeeds Campbell can run the exact same offense without us having to dumb it down to make up for any lack of arm-strength, meaning McCoy, should Weeds go down with injury. If Weeden fails and has to be sent packing, Campbell gives us a guy who can start for a year while the new guy gets up to speed. Truth-be-told both QB's are very similar, both physically and mentally, though it can be argued that Campbell is more suited to a pro-style offense.
It still wouldn't surprise me to see the Browns take a mid-round pick on one of the half-dozen or more QB's in this draft and stash him as the 3rd QB with the idea that he could be the future starter in a few years.
As for McCoy...he never had any trade-value to begin with, and I'd imagine we're not losing money by changing him out for Campbell. Our QB situation just got better, not worse.

I actually like this pick up. Campbell isn't a world beater but he is good enough to push Weeden. He also has enough talent to win games with help.

If the options were trading for a QB like Mallett, drafting Smith at 6 or bringing in a vet like Campbell than I am all for it.

Bleh. I knew that you'd be thrilled, Toad. I know who isn't thrilled ..... and that's Colt McCoy. Until now he could pretend that he might be on this team come the fall, and that he would have a high paying job in the NFL. Now that is all in question.

I actually really like this pick-up.....While Campbell isn't the answer for Cleveland at quarterback, he does provide us with a reasonable alternative in case Weeden is injured or flops out of the starting blocks.
I can't say that I really followed JC during his years leading the host of teams that gave him the opportunity; but I do seem to recall a player who showed that he was capable at the NFL level, performing in such a way that allowed his team to win some games...
Not a stellar player by any means, but definitely a capable quarterback in the league...

Very thrilled, thanks.
Who is going to pay McCoy more than $2 million? Nobody, that's who. We weren't ever going to, as that writing was on the wall months ago.
For anyone interested in Campbell's scouting report, this is from ESPN: Quote:
Grade: 71 | Key
Comment: Campbell has prototypical size and arm strength and can be extremely accurate when given time in the pocket. He has enough speed and athleticism to extend the pocket and make plays on the perimeter but is more effective when throwing from a strong pocket. He can read coverages and will go through his progressions to find the right target and is not the type to force too many throws. He is probably more of a game manager than a difference maker, but has enough tools to lead a winning team when surrounded with a solid cast.
If it weren't for Weeden's upside I'd want Campbell starting right away. He's bigger, faster, has more experience in a pro-style offense, and has an equal arm. Of course Campbell is only 22 months older than Weeden, so Weeds better get on his horse. This signing represents the warning shot to him that he's got about half-a-season to start producing or he's out.
Sadly, Campbell is better than any QB we've drafted in nearly 30 years. That speaks to just how poorly this organization has been run over that span.
This is an excellent signing for a team in our position.

To me this is a much better decision than trading for Malett. From the standpoint of long-term team building, adding a veteran makes much more sense than ransoming the future by spending multiple future draft picks.

I think that Campbell is a serviceable type QB. I don;t think that he can win many games for a team, but he also doesn't make a ton of stupid mistakes. The Plain Dealer reports that we gave him a "strong contract", which means that the team expects him to compete for the job, and wouldn't be surprised if he won the job. I would rather have a QB who I think that develop into something special ... but who nows .... maybe Campbell or Weeden will do that and rescue this moribund franchise from its doldrums. Cleveland Browns sign veteran QB Jason Campbell | cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ss...ult#incart_2boxCLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Browns have found the competition they've been looking for at quarterback. The team signed seven-year veteran Jason Campbell to a two-year contract last night. Terms were unavailable, but a source said it's a strong contract, meaning Campbell will probably be given a fair shot to win the job. For now, Campbell will provide the competition for incumbent Brandon Weeden and backup Colt McCoy that the Browns have been promising. The Browns will also continue to look at quarterbacks in the draft, probably in the later rounds. One that will visit Cleveland soon is Arizona's dual-threat passer Matt Scott, a projected late-round pick. Campbell, signed as unrestricted free agent, was a first-round pick of the Redskins in 2005, the 25th overall, out of Auburn. He's gone 31-40, with 76 touchdowns, 52 interceptions and a 82.5 quarterback rating. "Jason is an established leader who has started a number of games in this league and has had success," said Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski. "He brings us a veteran presence and a good set of physical tools. He played in a similar system when he was in Oakland and that will help in his transition." Said Browns CEO Joe Banner: "He is a veteran player who has been productive throughout his career and will be a good addition to our team." Campbell has started 71 of his 77 career games, completing 1,328 of 2,182 career passes for 14,682 yards. From the Browns' press release Tuesday night: Campbell spent the first five years of his career (2005-09) with Washington, where he became one of four quarterbacks in franchise history to throw for 3,000 yards in back-to-back seasons (3,245 in 2008 and 3,618 in 2009). He became the franchise leader in career completion percentage (61.2) and his passer rating of 82.3 was second-best in Washington annals. Campbell was traded to Oakland prior to the 2010 season and spent two years with the Raiders. He started 18 of 19 contests and threw for 3,557 yards with 19 touchdowns. In 2011, he led Oakland to a 4-2 record before a broken collarbone ended his season. Campbell signed with the Chicago Bears as an unrestricted free agent in 2012 and appeared in six games with one start last season. He completed 32 of 51 passes for 265 yards with two touchdowns.

Always thought Jason Campbell got the short end of the stick. Career QBR over 82 with no offense ever around him. I'll be the extremist. Campbell starts by game 1. It's a new slate and he's better than Weeden. When we have the best weapons of any team he's been a part of that's saying something.

for originality, hehe.
Ytown, I don't think it's a reach to assume any veteran QB we'd have signed would be given a "fair chance" to beat out Weeden. This regime had every opportunity early on to buoy him, and every time they passed.
As for Campbell, I believe I know him about as well as anyone. He was a guy on my radar way back in '05 where I had him graded in the mid-to-late 2nd round range. Even though I've pimped him over the last several years, it was as a spot-starter/seat-warmer, not as a long-term fix. He has all the tools and throws a great bad-weather football, but his football mind was always just a tad slow to be star player. He's the kind of guy that can win games with talent around him, but can't win games by himself.
Now, here in Cleveland he'll have the kind of offensive line that he's never had in his career, so if he were to end up being the starter I think you'd see career numbers out of him. Problem with that is I'd hate to see us get absolutely nothing out of our 2011 1st round draft pick, which is what Weeden is very close to giving us.
And the "Browns will look to trade McCoy" articles will appear in 3...2...1...

Toad and I agree about as often as the Haley's comet does its fly by but this is one of those rare occasions when I can say, Campbell is a good pickup. I think he is well suited for this offense and behind this line he could be deadly. Bottom line, Weeden better step it up or Campbell will beat him out.

If Campbell ends up being real competition for Weeden, we're in deeper doo-doo than we thought we were after last year. He's mediocre. At best. Oh well... if it all goes to pot this year, at least we'll be in position next April to grab our franchise QB.

Campbell has always been a solid NFL starter...just not a top 10-15 talent a lot expected out of him...even with the lowly Raiders he was looking good then they kind of threw him under after he got injured...not a bad signing at all...

Just cut McCoy- like today.
Any respect or support I had for him QUICKLY left when he admitted purposely throwing worm ball in the Denver game to "give his receivers a rest." I'd be happy if he NEVER earned a dime from this organization EVER again, and anyone who believed in him should understand what a slap in the face that is to his coaches, team, and fans.

We know what Campbell is. And what he is right now is better than what Weeden was last season. If Weeden is not better than Campbell he shouldn't be playing (obviously).
We need a QB that doesn't suck. A QB that sucks will submarine an entire season. Campbell has proven over his career that he is average. You won't win 12 games every year with him, but he won't kill you either. (I am not saying Weeden sucks, I am saying he has the potential to suck).
Excluding last season, when he came into to clean up after Jay Cutler was shredded into bits behind the crappy Bears offensive line, Campbell has a 60% completion rate, 74 TDs, 50 INTs, averages 203 yards per game, and has a career QB rating of 82.8.
This is a good pickup. Jason Campbell doesn't suck. With him as our starter we could win seven to nine games with a good defense and good running game. If Weeden beats him out that means he is as good or better. I also expect we will draft a QB in the later rounds.
(Side note: Jason Campbell will be 32 years old on December 31st. The 2013 season will be his 8th year in the NFL. Brandon Weeden will be 30 years old on October 14th. The 2013 season will be his 2nd season in the NFL.)

Here is a statement from Chud and Banner: Quote:
The Cleveland Browns today signed quarterback Jason Campbell to a two-year contract, the club announced. Campbell was previously as an unrestricted free agent from Chicago.
“Jason is an established leader who has started a number of games in this league and has had success,” said Browns Head Coach Rob Chudzinski. “He brings us a veteran presence and a good set of physical tools. He played in a similar system when he was in Oakland and that will help in his transition.”
“We are excited to have Jason as a member the Cleveland Browns,” said Browns CEO Joe Banner. “He is a veteran player who has been productive throughout his career and will be a good addition to our team.”
Originally drafted by the Washington Redskins in the first round (25th overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft, Campbell has started 71 of his 77 career games. He has completed 1,328 of 2,182 career passes (60.9%) for 14,682 yards with 76 touchdowns, 52 interceptions and an 82.5 passer rating. Campbell has a plus-24 touchdown-interception ratio, and his 2.4 career interception percentage is tied for eighth-best in the NFL since 2005. In addition, he has totaled 1,096 rushing yards and six scores. Campbell spent the first five years of his career (2005-09) with the Redskins, where he became one of four quarterbacks in franchise history to throw for 3,000 yards in back-to-back seasons (3,245 in 2008 and 3,618 in 2009). He became the franchise leader in career completion percentage (61.2) and his passer rating of 82.3 was second-best in Washington annals. He also established a team record with a streak of 271 consecutive passes without an interception, spanning from 2007-08, which was the fifth-longest streak ever in the NFL at the time.
Campbell was traded to Oakland prior to the 2010 season and spent two years with the Raiders. In those two seasons, he started 18 of his 19 contests and threw for 3,557 yards with 19 touchdowns. In 2011, he opened the first six contests and led Oakland to a 4-2 record before a broken collarbone ended his season. Campbell signed with the Chicago Bears as an unrestricted free agent in 2012 and appeared in six games with one start last season. He completed 32 of 51 passes for 265 yards with two touchdowns.
Campbell started 40 games at Auburn University (2001-04), where he was named the SEC Player of the Year by the Associated Press and SEC Offensive Player of the Year by the coaches after leading the Tigers to a 13-0 record in 2004. As a senior, he was named MVP of the 2004 SEC Championship game and the 2005 Sugar Bowl and finished seventh in the Heisman voting. That season, Campbell set a then-school record with 2,700 passing yards and a tied a then-school record with 20 touchdown passes. He ranks second in Auburn history in career passing yards (7,299), completions (552) and touchdowns (45) and helped lead Auburn to three SEC Western Division titles and one SEC Championship.
Born December 31, 1981, the 6-5, 230-pound Campbell is a native of Laurel, Mississippi and attended Taylorsville High School. He was named the 1999 Gatorade Player of the Year in Mississippi.

One more thing:
Brad Johnson made the Pro Bowl under Norv Turner in 1999. Hopefully Turner can work some magic with Campbell (or Weeden or McCoy or someone else) like he has done previously in his career.
(In 1999, when he was 31 years old, Brad Johnson threw for 4005 yards, 24 TDs, 13 INTs, and had a QB rating of 90. Jason Campbell can replicate that season.)

There u go Sports Fans.
We got exactly what Chud and Turner wanted. Veteran Leadership and a MENTOR for our Starting QB in Weeden.
Toad. All u gotta do is watch this thing in Training Camp. Campbell will spend the majority of his time TALKING with Weeden. WATCH.
There is no controversy. There is no competition. What there is is a Veteran QB on this roster now who will MENTOR Weeden this year. And make no mistake about it. This is Weedens one and ONLY chance.
This also confirms to me NO Mallet on this team thankfully and NO Geno Smith on this team thankfully.
PERFECT move by Banner and Lombardi.

Pretty much this....this is a good signing, if the money isn't crazy. He got 3.5mil last offseason from Chicago, he got older and did nothing, so I hope that his contract isn't for more than 7mil over 2 years....most of that will be paid by cutting McCoy, who's days are now numbered. We will probably try to get a 7th somehow, but although he is still worth it as a player, his contract and the fact that everyone knows he will get cut anyway nullififes whatever little value he has left
We've upgraded the QB depth chart considerably, got a vet that fits the system and pushes Weeden into a better starter or out of the league. I hope the poster "talking football" keeps note: I like this move a lot, especially because they've avoided something much dumber, at least for now...they can still draft a QB at 6, dump Weeden for a 7th, but bringing Campbell in alone on its own is a good move in any scenario....he's a 3year older version of Alex Smith, for much less and a better system fit
This will bump my confidence to 25%

Seems to me that you've all counted your chickens too soon. This changes nothing in the bigger picture. Thaddius Lewis will be the one that gets the shaft and McCoy is STILL very much in this fight. It will come down to who is the best QB for our team and that person many believe is Colt McCoy. So all of you who feel like continuing to bash Colt may find yourselves in a very awkward situation come opening day. If Colt proves Weeden insufficent then who is there should the starter fall, Thad? This makes sense if Colt Starts, Cambell is backing up and Weeden is a last resort. Book IT.

Until last year I thought he was a solid maybe but he was SO bad last year for the Bears. What was strange is that he looked rookie, skiddish and unsure of himself. That is a very troubling thing to see in a QB. Like he lost whatever mojo he might have had.
And so, welcome to the Browns!

Book IT.
Yeah.
