The Browns needed a veteran backup and Campbell fits that mold.

I've always liked Campbell and felt he would have been a good fit for the Browns a couple of years ago.

I guess this means Weeden is #1 This year, so lets move on ...

Norv must be some kind of offensive magician.

They've spent most of their FA money on defense, saw their most prolific scorer, Dawson, move on and now they give a "strong" contract to a qb who's success in the league is at best questionable.

I guess this signing is OK, but I'm wondering if Chud thinks the receivers are good enough or if he's got his eye on the draft.

Oh well, I'll see what they do in the draft before I really start worrying.

Good move. A solid vereran who brings more than experience. He has skills to win games. I don't see how anybody can dislike this move. We just made the QB position stronger.

As for Colt, he probably sticks for a while. His only value is if someone gets hurt...this team or another team. If our team, well, we have a back-up. If another team, who knows, maybe we will be able to coax a 4th-5th rounder for the guy.

Either way, he isn't on the team come September. Shoot, I might be all wrong and he gets cut this weekend before the April camps open.

Can we keep Colt without taking a roster spot? I guess he would have to be on the practice squad? I dont think the money is of any concern, just the roster space.

No is the short answer. He isn't eligible to be put on a practice roster.

And that is a good thing. As much as I like Colt the man, he is not in this teams long term plans and needs to go ASAP. Cut him now, and avoid the Colt Cult lashing out during the season.

At the moment, I am not sure about this move.

I thought Campbell was under-appreciated in Washington. I thought he was playing good for Oakland when he got injured, but then the Raiders went out and made that stupid, stupid trade to get Palmer.

Generally speaking, I thought Campbell was a guy who could make most of the throws and manage a game. Not a real difference maker, but serviceable. His TD to Int ratio was always decent and his qb rating isn't bad. However, the Washington fans were always disappointed w/him. Was he a first round pick? My big concern w/him is he looked pretty bad when he came in for Cutler last year. Very shaky. I think people in Chicago should appreciate Cutler more, because Campbelll looked horrid. That OL stinks.

The future? I think that Campbell is probably a better qb than Weeden---at least right now, but he doesn't thrill me as "our guy."

I don't know----it's not a bad move. It's probably a smart move, but it is a painful reminder to just how terrible our qb situation is--and has been--in Cleveland since the team came back into the league.

Agreed, and for the reasons previously posted. I believe another solid and logical signing. But this does not prevent us from drafting another QB in the mid-rounds and likely spells the end of CM...

No doubt we could still draft a QB. To me it is smart to draft a mid rounder.....maybe every year or two. You never know when you are going to hit on a winner. You can always carry the kid on the practice squad. I think it's smart to always carry a QB on the practice squad. You never know when you are going to lose a QB or two. It can't hurt anything to already have a guy who has been practicing with the team.

IDK I guess Campbell was the best that was out there. I am not a major fan of Campbell but he is only a 1 1/2 years older than Weeden and was efficent. His 82.5 career QBR is probably better than any QB we've had since the days of Couch I'm pretty convinced Campbell will beat Weeden out... which in itself is not saying that much about Weeden. We will need to draft another QB in the next 2 years but I'll take it.

Colt could stay on as a 3rd stringer if the Browns really want to ruin his chances at playing in the NFL next year. We actually might also need to keep Colt (for cap reasons)

I always liked Cambell back from the Aurburn days. I think expectations were too high in Washington and Oakland, well continued to prove insanely stupid moves. It still irritates me what they gave up for Palmer, Cincy is still laughning two years later

This is a nice fit & the hope is he pushes Weeden to be the best he can be. If he doesn't, plan "B" is in place. We may just find Cambell is the better quarterback I'm at the point I want our quarterback to not loose us games, we had our fair share of sub-standard quarterback play.
Another solid move by the FO

What is McCoy' trade value? A 5? As opposed to just cutting him which nets us nothing. Some others will be free to go and I would prefer any type of "salvage" for the folks these FA's replace. Any hope of that?

The problem is, his contract is $2.3 million in 2013. Not sure teams are willing to pay that to a back up QB. Don't think we'd get a 5th for him either.

If anything happens to him, my guess is he's cut.

Agreed. The only way we get a pick for the guy is if we keep him through most of camp and some team has a couple of QBs injured in the preseason.

Well this provides that Competition that was promised without having to draft another QB. Again a move to eliminate any Urgent Need in the draft.

Don't know but age difference probably isn't too far apart. Weeden Campbell.

The other thing is this. If we are excited (I am at least) on the prospects of what Chud/Norv can bring out in Over achieving QBs for Weeden why not for a talented QB like Campbell n make him look better...ergo the DA theory...if they (Chud) can make DA look like a pro-bowler imagine what they will do with Weeden...well you can add Campbell.

I Weeden doesn't work hard he will not win the competition n virtually he can kiss his career good bye...Good make this kid work hard n be the best he can be.

Colt...we need QBs in Camp so that arms don't get burnt out. If in that interim we can get a 5th, 6th, 7th for him especially after the draft where a Colt might be more important than a draft pick a year away??? So be it. We could keep a Weeden, Campbell, Colt QB trio which is pretty darn good as far as QBs go as a Unit.

Again...if we are targeting a QB at #6 or 3rd round or later...this doesn't change a thing. I don't think the QB of the future is on our Team. Even if Weeden or Campbell studs out. We will be looking to draft our QB somewhere along the line n then trade the veteran QB.

JMHO

I think this says it all.

While he may provide "competition" for Weeden we are in serious trouble if Campbell beats him out for the starting position.

So far I feel good about FA, but not great. This move isn't gonna tip me over the edge into great.

I am waiting for the first time he completes a pass as a Brown and Toad launches a new thread with a 50 paragraph post detailing all of Campbell's stellar QB attributes.....

Agree with you on McCoy. If Lombardi gets a 5th for him Django confidence-o-meter should go up 30 points.

I like the signing of Campbell, even if he ends up as nothing more than a backup. He brings a smart competent professional football brain, attitude and work ethic. He will be beneficial to the development of the inexperienced Qb's on our roster, whether that be Weeden this year or our 1st round draft pick next season.

And I totally disagree with you toad about his football mind being slow. He had to learn something like 4 different offensive systems in his 1st 5 years in the league. Dude understands football. He actually did better in the systems that required quick decision making. The problem that Campbell has had is his throwing motion. He has such a long delivery that NFL db's can read his throwing motion and break on the ball that half second earlier which turns some completions into defended passes and knocked down passes into interceptions.

Another move to ad some flexability in the draft.

Many of these moves of late helps reduce the must have urgency for positions in this draft allowing us to draft BPA, trade down etc.

In addition most of these "depth" moves are minimal costs so if they do not pan out we can move forward.

I really like how their plan is unfolding... now get Grimes and some safety help

I am not sure how much I like this signing. Either way, IF Jason Campbell "wins" this competition (which I don't think he will), we are still looking for a QB if that prooves Weeden can't make it! And losing to Campbell would be evidence of that, I think. It's probably just me, but I don't think this is real competition that we were told would come here. I don't see Campbell having any legit shot. It's Weeden's job to lose still IMO.

I guess I would have much preferred the competition to be a younger QB (which still may happen in the draft) that could have been given a shot and possibly has the tools to be given legitimate consideration- Not an almost 32-year old journeyman.

Bottom line, this doesn't answer any questions for me if Campbell wins this job, which I don't think he will. I'm a little perplexed on this. Looking forward to the "strong contract' details.

Who knows? Maybe Chud doesn't think Campbell can win it either and wants him there for leadership purposes, which allegedly people around here say Weeden needs.....

After sleeping on it, I think the move is fine. Would have come off as much better if they didn't talk about competition.

I don't care what anyone says, that's not competition. Jason Campbell is horrible. Yes, he's better than Colt McCoy and a lot of the other trash we've rolled out since '99, but is that really saying anything?

I don't care about the "mentoring" part either. I think that's been overblown through the years. How's that working for Ken Dorsey nowadays?

This guy's job is to come in and make plays if Brandon goes down. If Brandon goes down for an extended period of time, we're screwed. Although you could say that for most situations when a starter goes down. Nobody's backup is coming in and lighting it up. It really doesn's work that way.

When you think about it like that, it's not that bad. The competition comment just makes it look worse, but they've already said a bunch of stupid things anyway. I don't really care about what they say. It's what they do that I'm worried about.

If this thing turns out to 4-5 wins again, I want every QB on this team sent away. Far, far away. GONE.

Just out of curiosity, if a REAL competition happened, which would people prefer to see?

Weeden v Campbell

OR

Weeden v McCoy

??

Competition is a good thing. I had a real problem with how things went down last year with the "fantasy competition."

This more than likely means that Geno Smith will not be drafted by the Browns. McCoy will be released. I just do not see a scenario with Weeden, Campbell, and Smith ( the sixth pick). This to me signals that they will look to draft a guy like Matt Scott in the third or later rounds. See what happens with Weeden and reevaluate after the season.

No kidding. If someone offered up a 5th for McCoy the front office would have him on a plane before they hung up the phone.

As someone said, they only way we get anything out of him is if we hold on to him long enough for another team to lose a QB or two in camp. Then, maybe a conditional pick.

I agree there.

I'm more than OK giving Weeden this year. There are no excuses for him now. He's got 2 very good offensive minds helping him. The offense is actually set up for a guy with his skill set. I think they're going to add one more weapon, maybe 2 with the rest of FA and this draft.

I also think Chud is going to make sure we run the ball a lot better than we have the last 2 seasons. I think he will stick to his guns more than Pat did.

Drafting a QB high is risky when you're running a team. If you fail, it's going to be a bad mark. Any bad draft pick is a bad mark, but when it's a QB, it's a bigger mark. Brandon Weeden isn't Lombardi/Banner's problem. So I think they are more than OK with letting these 2 QB's work this year, and if it fails, they can maybe think about taking that QB risk the following draft.

This is a perfect signing, he's the type of QB I want at #2 on the depth chart. He's good enough to push the starter, has experience to help teach him, and is capable of filling in when needed without looking lost. I love it.

I think every young player benefits from having a good veteran presence in the locker room. Not any veteran but a good one. College kids come into this league and don't realize the difference in the amount of work they need to do. They think that they lift hard and look at a lot of film. Then they see what these veterans do and realize that while maybe they worked hard as compared to other college kids, they need to rev it up even more as a professional.

Plus the veterans can show then some insider tricks. Both on the field (example: little things that give you and advantage that may actually be penalties but the refs just don't call if you do it this way) and off (how to handle the media and the lifestyle).

I don't have a issue about this.
One he's better than McCoy so I expect him to be gone.
Two he will press Weeden, but I expect BW to beat him back.
Now if he can't or if Weeden gets hurt(anyone think about that???) than U have a strong armed backup who knows the offense.
Third it allows the Browns to draft a developmental QB if they want and have him sit.

this was not the week to quit huffing paint

anyway, it's a solid enough move. Colt and Thaddeus fell on their face in relief, so we get someone who also fell on their face in relief last year, but has a better track record.

if Weeden cannot beat out Campbell, then he's not the answer anyway and we have bigger issues to worry about there.

Jacksonville isn't going to throw away a 4th rounder on an expensive backup who has shown very little in his career. Neither is Green Bay.

Someone said that DJ's confidence meter should go up to 30 points if Lombardi can trade McCoy for a 5th? Hell, it should go up by 30 points if he could do that. Such a trade would be worse than highway robbery.

I agree that noone will give that for Colt, unless it's a conditional 7th rounder that can rise to 4th rounder if Colt starts 8-10 games for them next season.

Not going to argue the point, just a thought, after all he has been a starter in this league and there are more than a couple of QB starved teams ...
