No. We're the Browns. Weeden will go down week 12, with a 4 win season behind him. Cambell will come in and win three games. We'll be out of the race to draft the top teir QBs in the draft and the cycle will continue.

I've actually been positive. Like I said, I think Weeden has a chance to do well in this offense, with those coaches. I really can't see Norv overstepping his bounds with Chud, so I think he's got a great situation around him.
But on the flip side, I'm a Browns fan, and I still realize that anything means nothing, and until I see it with my own eyes, the ugly can still come out.

My first reaction to this is "sigh".
In my opinion, this signing points to these two things:
1. They don't feel McCoy can light a fire under Weeden's rear. 2. They are counting on Weeden to win the competition and be a better player than last year.
Because if Campbell wins the competition we are in big trouble.
Cinci, Pitt, Roth always find their guy. 14 years strong and we still don't have a QB.
Only in Cleveland.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

I dont care if its McCoy and Campbell. If the coaches feel they are the best.

I didn't blame the FO for the signing. Didn't say they sucked. Didn't say they didn't know what they are doing. Didn't bash them in anyway.
But don't ask me to get excited about this signing or our QB situation, in general. The fact that Campbell is being signed to compete for a starting job and not to be the clear cut #2 is just more reminder of how crappy we are.
I know what you were trying to do with your question. Maybe you were reading a little too much into my post.

It was written as somewhat tongue and cheek. It resonates because we've been beaten down for so long and I can see this potential outcome as being a possibility. Now is that because the 'cosmos is against us'? No I'm not one of those thinkers. But patterns occur. The Browns as of late have seen patterns of our failure and hated rivals success. So you know I go into every season with hope. I wanted Couch, Holcomb, Anderson, Quinn, Colt, Weeden, and the hundreds in between to succeed. Who ever the Browns trot out there this season will get my support. But if my scenario unfolds, I won't be shocked or surprised.

I am waiting for the first time he completes a pass as a Brown and Toad launches a new thread with a 50 paragraph post detailing all of Campbell's stellar QB attributes.....
I wasn't planning on waiting that long.
For those thinking we'll keep McCoy, the first thing that needs to be realized is that we didn't sign Campbell to be the #3 QB. He's the backup at worst, competition as the starter at best. That means McCoy would clearly be the emergency QB, and I'm not sure there's a team in the NFL who is paying their #3 QB $2.3 million dollars.
Forget the salary cap ramifications...what owner is going to happily sign over a couple of million dollars for a guy that is slated to never see the field? There isn't one. That would be highly illogical from a financial standpoint.
Every team knows that if they've put the #3 guy in the game they are going to lose. To that end it doesn't make any sense to pay a deposed starter that kind of money to ride the bench behind your incumbent starter and the guy you just gave a two-year deal to with plans to have him compete for the starting gig.
If someone can make a convincing argument on how it makes sense for McCoy to remain on the roster I'm willing to listen, but it's going to have to be one helluva an argument...

Jason Campbell brings absolutely nothing to the table, he is slow in the pocket, and has a slow release and has more than likely reached his maximum potential. I would have liked a younger Quarterback who maybe had a shot at turning into a future starter for the team. I wonder what this means for Colt McCoy? I hope it's a three way battle for the starting spot. I'm not at all excited for this movie.
We have still done nothing to upgrade the offense. We still need an athletic pass catching tight end, a slot receiver, and at least one upgraded offensive guard.

This isn't the first time you made a comment like this to me after I have asked you a question. I think you have me all wrong. I simply want to know if you had someone in mind for competition.
I really hate all the accusations of agendas. I think it muddies the board. I don't think that if a poster writes something that goes against a move this regime makes means they have something against them. I personally think you are just another fan who only wants to see a winner put on the field.

Colt and Jason are both mobile, and both have decent turnover ratios. Lewis is out.
We start the season with three QBs who have multiple game experience.
I would not be shocked to see us trade down to aquire more 2014 picks---for a QB possibility, if Weeden does not improve---alot.
But what do I know?

NRTU. Certain posters can now go huff paint.
this was not the week to quit huffing paint
anyway, it's a solid enough move. Colt and Thaddeus fell on their face in relief, so we get someone who also fell on their face in relief last year, but has a better track record.
if Weeden cannot beat out Campbell, then he's not the answer anyway and we have bigger issues to worry about there.
lol have you seen Chicago's line...I bet there are a lot of starting QBs that would fall on their face behind that line. It has to be close to if not the worst OL in the league.

It would not suprise me come draft day McCoy if we can & Weeden both get moved if we can get some Value for them, Buffalo & Arizona might be willing take a chance on Weeden if thier QB of choice goes to somebody else.

Well so much for bringing in someone that will "compete" with Weeden and push him. IMO Campbell isn't much of an upgrade, if any "upgrade" at all.
Nothing to get me thrilled about this signing.

Not just to you, but I would pose this question to anyone: What QB out there in free agency would have made people happy?

Obviously the Alex Smith name is going to pop out. Out of some slim pickings, he'd be at the top of the list. I'd rather have inked up Hasselbeck than Campbell, and I don't even like Matt either lol...

He is not a "commodity" until after the season starts... Once we're playing games, his stock goes up every time a QB doesn't make it back to the huddle. We get a free draft pick if he is on our roster to start the season. If we can secure that beforehand - that's fine too, but very unlikely.
The Campbell signing makes perfect sense...
A. McCoy can't light a fire under Weeden because he doesn't carry the same tools in his belt, period. Campbell can.
B. If Weeden doesn't fit the bill, Campbell bridges the gap to our "next" great QB. It's a win-win. Weeden sucks - he gets traded - Campbell takes over - mentors new QB - falls back into backup role or moves on... I don't see Colt McCoy filling the role in this previous sentence.
C. Campbell is an NFL Starting QB. "Serviceable" is a very good description, "upside" is still a term that applies as well. I don't think that either of these terms apply to Colt.

Agreed, and I will add a 3rd.
We are advertising that we are not interested in drafting a QB #6 and will entertain offers for someone wanting to move up to do so

Alex Smith wasn't a free agent. The cost to acquire smith was the 34th pick in the draft and a future mid-rounder.
I wanted Smith as well, but I wouldn't have paid that price.
So what free agent QB's would have made people happy.

My problem with Cambell or any other stop gap QB is more about them being good enough to hold the team back. Meaning being good enough to win 6 to 9 games a year for the next 3 years keeping us from drafting a top tier replacement. Then they retire and we move on to the next 'forth best QB in the draft'. I'm a win 3 games or win 12 games and be in the playoffs kinda guy. Aging vet QBs that win us 8 games does very little for our future. Sadly with Weeden's age he could do the same thing to us. JMHO

None. The pickings were slim and none of them (save, perhaps, Smith) were long-term solutions at QB. Considering Chud's goal to bring in a vet to compete/push Weeden, I think Campbell fits the bill as well as anybody who was available to us. Weeden will either sink or swim. If he sinks, we'll either have a developmental guy we draft this April working in the wings or we'll draft another guy in the 2014 draft.
If Weeden swims, we'll be happier sooner rather than later (maybe).

If you guys believe that Weeden is the incumbent QB you're not seeing things clearly. Last season McCoy was the incumbent and Weeden showed very little, possibly nothing at all that should allow him to beat out McCoy for the starting position. So we are back at square one. Weeden has no leg up on Colt this season as the FO that gambled their jobs and whiffed are long gone. It's a three horse race now between Colt, Brandon and Jason. Whoever is the best QB will play and that's that. This FO is smart enough to know that they need a veteran in case Colt and Weeden don't pan out, that's why Jason Campbell was brought in. But, I believe that Colt will continue what he has been doing since he got here, leading and fighting for a start. The team around him believes in Colt even if some of you don't, numerous teammates have come out and said Colt was better and should have started over Weeden. So Old Man Weeds may find himself the odd man out, he may very well have been a failed project, and it's hard to justify a 30 year old former baseball player turned QB experiment. Maybe Weeden will try the PGA tour next, heck he'd fit right in with all the other old timers...

Sorry for you because you obviously like Colt and that's fine. However, the writing is on the wall.
