The San Francisco 49ers announced they have completed a trade with the Cleveland Browns. The 49ers have acquired QB Colt McCoy and an undisclosed 2013 draft pick in return for sending the Browns two undisclosed 2013 draft picks. McCoy passed a physical earlier today in the Bay Area to finalize the deal.

“We are pleased to add another high-character player like Colt to our roster,” said 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke. “He is a young, competitive player who we are looking forward to working with.”

McCoy (6-1, 220) was originally selected by the Cleveland Browns in the third round (85th overall selection) of the 2010 NFL Draft. In three seasons, he has played in 24 games (21 starts), completing 409 of 702 pass attempts for 4,388 yards, 21 touchdowns.

A 26-year-old native of Tuscola, TX, McCoy played collegiately at the University of Texas, where he finished his career completing 1,157 of 1,645 passes for 13,253 yards and 112 touchdowns. He added 447 rushing attempts for 1,571 yards and 20 scores, on the way to finishing his collegiate career with 47 school records. At the time McCoy left Texas, he had tallied the most wins of any starting quarterback in NCAA history (45-8)

Monday he was in Cleveland and by Tuesday morning he was in Santa Clara.

Sometimes that’s how the NFL works. Colt McCoy found out the realities of professional football first-hand on the first day of April.

After passing a physical in the Bay Area on Tuesday, the 26-year-old former Browns quarterback was officially acquired by the San Francisco 49ers. The trade, first reported on Monday, allows the 6-foot-1, 220-pound quarterback to add depth to San Francisco’s quarterback room. McCoy will likely compete with Scott Tolzien to be the team’s No. 2 signal-caller.

“I couldn’t be more happy,” the fourth-year pro said in a conference call with local reporters.

McCoy provides experience to the 49ers and has 11 more starts than current starter Colin Kaepernick. McCoy has 21 starts in three seasons with Cleveland to be exact. The former Browns starter has completed 409 of 702 pass attempts for 4,388 yards, 21 touchdowns and sounded eager to begin work with his new club when discussing his prospects with the 49ers.

McCoy heard speculation about the Browns looking to trade him this offseason and when he was told of the trade while arriving in Cleveland to take part in offseason workouts, he had to come to grips with closing his Browns career. McCoy quickly moved on and embraced a new opportunity with the defending NFC champions.

“There were a lot of ups and downs, but I really appreciate everything I learned there,” McCoy said of the franchise that drafted him in the third-round of the 2010 NFL Draft. “By the time I got a lot of emotions in check by the end of the day yesterday I was really pleased to come to San Francisco.”

McCoy highlighted the “great” coaches, locker room and organization as reasons for his excitement in joining the 49ers for the start of his fourth NFL season.

McCoy was classy in his comments on the Browns, too.

“It was unfortunate the way it all went down and ended, but no hard feelings towards those guys,” McCoy said. “I wish them nothing but the best. I’m thankful for the opportunity here.”

The 49ers acquired McCoy and an undisclosed draft pick for two undisclosed 2013 draft picks.

“We are pleased to add another high-character player like Colt to our roster,” 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke said in a statement released by the team. “He is a young, competitive player who we are looking forward to working with.”

McCoy, himself, is looking forward to the working relationship with the 49ers and Jim Harbaugh’s coaching staff.

“They’ve been around this game for a long time, they know offense like the back of their hands,” McCoy said.

During his time with the Browns, McCoy became friends with former Stanford fullback Owen Marecic, a former Harbaugh player, and came to learn all about the 49ers coach’s teaching style.

“They’ve been very successful,” McCoy said of the 49ers coaching staff. “Just talking to him throughout the years and watching his offense play, I think we do a lot of things similarly.”

McCoy spent the morning with 49ers coaches after passing his physical and had lunch with Harbaugh. The athletic quarterback said there are similarities between the offense he ran in Cleveland to the one he’ll run with the 49ers, but said most importantly, he’s eager to learn the nuances of Greg Roman’s system immediately.

“I’ll be new to it,” McCoy said, “but I’m excited to get going.”

McCoy is eager to join the team when it begins offseason training on April 15.

“My job is to come in and learn as quickly as I can,” he said. “It’s a great to get a fresh start with a team that’s established.

“I’ve heard nothing but good things about this place. For me to be able to come to a place like this, it’s definitely a blessing.”

Great guy and I'm happy for him.

I actually got a chance to talk to him before a game last year down on the field. I have a child with cancer and, through a relative who knows his HC @ Texas, we were invited by Colt to come down on the field before the Pitts game.

Couldn't have been nicer to not just my son but all of us. He knew damn well, he wasn't coming back this year. I asked him where his head was at and he said that he was thankful of all the fan support he recieved here and while he would love to start, he felt blessed to be a part of the Browns. He said he was thankful to be able to play "here or somewhere else."

Pure class, graciousness, and generousity. Traits all to easy to over look, I think.

On the flip side, my son saw Weeden doing pre-game stretches about 3 hours before the game. He waved his ass off at him ands Weeden wouldn't even acknowledge him. Afterwards, my son asked that I never buy him a Weeden jersey.

I know players are "in their heads" before a game etc but a simple wave of the hand was all my sone was looking for. He was joking around with Josh Cooper the whole time too so it wasn't like he was intensely into his pre-game thing.

In the end, I don't care about that from a team standpoint - win and he'll be loved. But that day, I learned a lot about Weeden...and Colt.

Nothing but the best for McCoy. He deserves it.

Regardless of their playing abilities, I don't know why some athletes have to be such pricks...

It's really not that hard to wave and smile at a kid.

Oh, and I wish your son the best.

Absolutely. I was kinda shocked actually. I figured at theast the ol' fake pistol/eye wink from him but he just looked away. Saw my son a couple of times and same thing.

Whatever. Not everyone HAS to be the nicest guy in the world. It's your choice. But Colt didn't have to either and he did. It's just a bit jarring when you see Weeden do that. I'm sure he knew why we were there as he and Colt were hanging in the middle of the field a few minutes later.

It was pretty funny - Colt asked my son if he wanted to see where he stood during the games. When my son elatedly said Yes!, he walked him over to those gas heaters next to the bench. Funny and really cool. Spent about a half-hour walking him around and doing the picture thing.

Again, if Weeden caught on fire, I'd like him too (as a player). But I'll never forget how great Colt was and how crappy Weeeden was to my boy.

Especially because that will be the last time he'll ever see a game.

I will ALWAYS be a Colt fan and hope the best for him. I understand that he lost the job (fairly or not) and that he clearly doesn't posess "prototypical QB variables." This is a business with a new FO etc.

I'm at least a fan of Colt the person. At the moment that's a lot more than I can say for Weeden.

As another barometer (and the thrill of a lifetime) Bernie was down on the field as well and spent a good 10 minutes with us, despite a ton of people waving stuff for him to sign. He was INCREDIBLY nice and cool. I'm not even sure he knew my sone was sick - just always like that. Again, total thrill for the both of us.

I want more than anything for Weeden to do well. I'm a Browns addict. But I could care less about him.

Our other take-aways from that day - Joe Banner seems like he is no taller than 4 feet. Travis Benjamin looks maybe 2 inches taller than him. The difference between height from Colt to Weeden is almost not obvious to the neaked eye. Marecic sucked even warming up. Jimmy Haslam is very tan.

Really?

Weeden is 3" taller than McCoy. I have seen them standing side by side several times, and Weeden is significantly taller. I have seen pictures of McCoy with his helmet on top of his head, and Weeden with his helmet down, and Weeden was still taller. I think that you were looking through your Colt glasses.

As far as the rest of the stuff .... Colt is a nice guy. I don't think that anyone debates that. I want a great QB. If a guy is a great QB, and is so driven that he works his ass off on a daily basis, and does nothing except work on getting better, then I won't give one half a damn if he spends time with the fans or not.

Colt was hard not to like as a person. He was a class act, good team player and a hard worker by all accounts.

I do wish him all of the best. But the nature of the beast is you must fit into what your team does. He simply didn't fit here in what this FO plans to do on O moving forward.

San Fran does seem like a better fit for him. He's a good kid and as I said, I wish him nothing but the best in his future.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I don't know how anyone could have hard feelings with Colt. How many times did we see overload and all other types of blitz coming from that right side of the o-line when he had his starter role? How many times did we see this kid get leveled, and rise back up to his feet again?

Like most people are saying, I too wish him nothing but the best.

Couple interesting things.. Colt does show the class I've come to expect from him... he does get a very subtle dig in there when he implies that he expects to have better coaching in San Fran.. which it's hard to argue he's not right compared to what he's had here, but still...

I wish him the best...

Haha. Quite possibly. The difference is there - not striking though. The point is, that when you see it, you immediately say "THIS is what all the hub-bub is about?" I'm 6'3" and have a pretty good point of view. I do have Colt glasses, but standing next to him was surprising. He isn't that short.

And I totally get that he wasn't a fit here. Totally. Just relaying a great story.

I get it too with Weeden. I don't need him to be Nelson Mandela. And as I said, if he catches fire, I'll be a fan. But as it stands, he's been inconsistant as a player and didn't impress me as a person. I would like nothing more for him to be a pro-bowler, though, and the new scheme will do well to help that. I'm still amazed at how stubbornly idiotic Shurmur was with his insistance on his ill-fitting offense.

Remarkable.

Colt will be missed by my family and I. The QB is the one that needs to be a leader on the field and command respect from his teammates. I see that in Colt. When he stood up and made that speach before the Pittsburgh game, that pretty much sealed the deal for me. Even Joe Thomas, who has seen QB after QB come and go, gave Colt his seal of approval. Players like that you don't just let walk away. He could have been our backup for many, many years and even push the starter for the spot every season. I don't see a leader at the QB position on the roster at this time. Weeden and Campbell are dull, life-less even, in comparison to Colt McCoy.

What would be greater than Colt to step up this year and prove that he can be a starting QB in this league after spending time in SF and getting quality coaching? Cleveland signing him to be their starter next season. Hey, don't judge me, there's a chance!

Being nice doesn't give Colt a stronger arm. And considering he hurt his throwing shoulder again last season? I doubt his arm strength has improved this off season..... That shoulder is likely going to cause him trouble his entire career.....

Just don't get disappointed when he's a FA next year n we don't say boo to him. Cause the odds a team that just trades a guy will go and sign him the next.

He definitely got a bum deal...remember he got injured in his last game in college. He got that bad high ankle sprain as a rookie...I thought he played much much better before the sprain then when he came back - too soon.

then in 2011 he had to finish the season on IR??? He got killed - what I didn't like that hurt him a lot was his inability to recognize blitzes...several times I felt like I was watching a Horror movie...yelling Don't GO IN THE BASEMENT! DON'T GO!!! We'd see 2 guys overloading on the right...Colt they are blitzing you are looking right at them pre-snap...COLT THEY ARE COMING....Hut - COLT DON'T YOU SEE THEM THROW THE BA------Oh man that looked like it hurt! Just happened too much. I'm sort of glad he got a season to sit down n just HEAL!

Unfortunately he won't see to much action in 2013.

JMHO Good Health Colt n Good Luck

The Browns winning football games, for starters.

I'd take that over Colt McCoy becoming a starting QB after receiving quality coaching on the bench (?).

I would have liked to see him with Norv's offense; might have had a great time with TE's if Chud brings 'em along. We will never know. I think he could do more than he was allowed to do. Actually coached down. But he handled things better than he might have. I wish him success elsewhere. And I hope we cream him if we get a chance. Just another guy to beat now.

What type of cancer does your son have, red? If you would rather not say---that's cool. I will say a prayer for him tonight.

YTown, did Colt ever hurt you personally? Did Weeden give you money? Sheesh man, you act like Weeden played so much better than Colt. Got news for you---he didn't.

First off ...... red .. I didn't see that your son has cancer. I hope that he is able to beat it and have a long, healthy life.

Next, the only thing that Colt did was play really badly. I got so damn tired of watching the same thing all the time in 2011 .......... play like junk for 3 quarters ...... then make a stat run late to make his final numbers look somewhat respectable. (and I do not mean that he personally did anything wrong, except for the fact that he was unable to be a difference maker when the other team actually played defense) He also had lousy pocket awareness, and made his OL look even worse than it actually was. I really loved watching McCoy try to spin out of the pocket and into a sack instead of simply taking a step up, when he easily could have.

The WCO was supposed to be tailor made for McCoy ...... yet he got worse and worse as the year went along. Weeden never fit into the Shurmur offense. He was a shotgun QB forced to play under Center more than almost any other QB in the league.

To me, McCoy was just another weak armed QB that we brought in to play in cold and windy Cleveland for some reason. He carried on the failed tradition of Frye and Quinn. He was/is never going to be the reason a team wins anything. Will Weeden? I don't know. Would I rather invest my efforts in a guy who can actually put zip on the ball, and has some idea of how to hit a moving target? Definitely. McCoy was a failed experiment. Weeden is on the burner, and we'll see what happens with him. If he fails, then I hope that he is replaced as well.

I was just wondering because you are typically a very rational and logical poster, yet you seem to really hate McCoy while cutting Weeden all sorts of slack.

I have not been very impressed w/either qb, so please don't assume that I love Colt McCoy, but I really don't see how anyone can say that Weeden played better than McCoy. It also isn't like McCoy started a lot more games than Weeden. And Weeden played in better circumstances----talent and no lockout.

It just seems odd that you--and others--are so tolerant w/Weeden yet so intolerant w/McCoy.

Weeden is physically gifted and suits the current offensive scheme. It isn't any more complicated than that.

Think of the comparison as Charlie Frye vs. Derrick Anderson in Chud's offense.

In spite of the many weaknesses to DA's (Weeden's) game, he has the potential to put up probowl numbers. Whereas a weak armed QB is really going to flounder in this offense.

For me I am not sold on Weeden but I want to see him one more year because 1) He is the best option we got (including when we had Colt) and 2) I think his skill set fits the style of offense Chud likes to run.

Chud likes to throw the ball down field, Colt can't do that. Another of my issues with Colt is his happy feet. Colt fans always remember that time he broke out of the pocket and ran 16yds for a first down. They don't remember that he did it because he felt a little pressure, didn't trust his guys and wasn't looking down field finding an open guy. But he got the first and people got excited, then on the next set of downs Hillis ran for 4 yds, had an incomplete pass on 2nd and on third down he felt a little pressure again, rolls out (cutting half the field off again) this time the LB stayed home, Colt dumps it off to a TE or RB 2yds down field who is covered up and tackled for no YAC. 4th down Punt. But people remember that 16yd first down run he did.

Weeden has his own set of issues, 1) A guy his size should not have as many batted balls that he has. He is looking too long to where he wants to throw the ball that the D-Lineman can read it. And he must be doing an awful long wind up for as many of them to get their hands up in time. 2) too many INT's 3) has not been accurate down field which was suppose to be his strength.

This is Weeden's shot, he has to shown progress in correcting these issues or we will be looking for a new QB next draft/offseason. Anyone can have a bad game but they need to be few and far between.

All in all Colt is a back up, he never shown to have a starter quality arm. But he didn't make sense to be backing up Weeden in Chud/Norv's system. He is a different QB, the last thing you want is to have to change your offense around if/when your back up comes in. Colt is a perfect fit to back up Kap in SF. He is not as good as Kap, and doesn't have Kap's arm but at least he can run that offense and is more suited for him as a QB that wants to roll out.

I am curious. To all you Colt haters out there who think he is worthless why do you assume Colt is proven to be worse because he got traded? I think its the total opposite.

The 49ers went to the superbowl last year and almost won it thanks to a large part in how their backup QB played. Do you not possibly think the 49ers view their backup QB as valuable? I think it's safe that they do.

Colt keeps getting blasted for supposedly having a noodle arm(which he doesn't)yet the 49er's got rid of Alex because his arms didn't allow him to make the throws their offense runs. Still they give up draft picks including a 5th rounder, which is respectable, to make sure we were not going to cut Colt(never was going to happen IMHO) and put him on the open market.

So in short, a team that almost won the superbowl last year thought enough of Colt as a QB to give up draft picks to have him play in their vertical offense as their #2. To some, that would make you wonder.

Good post, I agree for the most part, but will debate this one: too many INTs?

Weeden was horrible in week 1, no excuses, but after that he controlled the gunslinging much better, he threw 13 INTs in 14 starts and close to 500 PAs....you'd be amazed how many veteran QBs have a much higher INT-ratio than that. Since week 2 Weeden had 13 INTs and 4 fumbles (1 lost) in 14 games. McCoy threw 11 INTs and fumbled 11 times (only 2 lost, got very luck) in 13 games in 2012 in the same Shumur Offense....it really is one of the board MYTHs that Weeden "is a TO waiting to happen", but McCoy "took care of the ball", more perception than anything, as the facts speak a different language

The 49ers used the Pistol with Kaepernick and a conventional WCO with Smith. The WCO they used for Smith that MAY be used for Colt as well is not a vertical passing scheme.

I would argue that IMO Pat dialed back the offense and became more conservative to help eliminate some of Weeden's INT's. At least that is what if felt like to me.

Sure he did, but he did the same to Colt. It's not like Colt was throwing it downfield more than Weeden..still, one is considered a "game manager", the other "a TP waiting to happen". It doesn't make much sense to me and goes to show how perception distorts pretty simple facts

Hey guys. Thanks for asking.

He's in palliative care right now. Couple of months is all we have.

It's a rare one that he has been fighting for 5 years, since he was 8. Biggest Browns fan I've ever known.

I don't want ro turn this into a pity party. But you all might be able to see why I have the Colt glasses on.

I really don't know how much of a difference it made that Colt had no off season in that offense. Suppose it didn't help.

Perfectly understandable.

I have never questioned Colt McCoy from the standpoint of being a great person, and great with the fans. I am glad that he was able to do some things to make your son happy.

I pray that he doesn't suffer, and will pray the God will grant you and your son a miracle.

My best wishes to you both.

While it sure didn't help, he also was in his 2nd season playing and seeing NFL defenses live and in action...a luxury rookie Weeden didn't have, so kind of off-setting

Here's the important thing in this trade, the Browns picks are now, minus the 6th rounder in the trade:
6.
68.
104.
139.
164
175.
237
