*Besides a few young guys above who might lose their position battles,
There are a few UDRFA guys (so far) that might push for Practice Squad
Slots: Ryan McWethy, S, Wisconsin-Platteville; Dave Kruger, DT, Utah;
and Cordell Roberson, WR, Stephen F. Austin

--Overall we still have questions at TE and in the Secondary and an obvious
need (IMO) to upgrade fullback (not too concerned with Punter- they're easy
to pick up)
--At least it's the best group of WR's we've had since the reincarnation.

I'll bet you a box of quality donuts right now that Spencer Lanning will be a pro-bowl punter by year 5 of his career.

If you don't want to wait that long, we can say a darn good punter by year two....board vote rules.

I am just saying I think he is going to be better than good.

The transition from a CB to FS is one of the easier position changes in football. I wonder if one or both of the free agent corners Chris Owens or Kevin Barnes will get a shot at free safety?

I really dont think the draft helped us that much but I already see a competitive roster in place. The AFC North may be a battle of Ohio this year

No doubt the draft didn't really upgrade our top end much, but between that and free agancy at least we really don't have any depth concerns.

I guess we'll have to wait and see who fits in the new offense and defense before we can target most starter upgrades.

I'm really tired of waiting for this team to come together though.

Like I have said for years, you don't always build a roster from the top down.

You can't always do that. Building from the bottom up is just as important, even if not sexy.

In some years, bottom up is the way to go.

I really want to see the names of the 17 UDFA's mentioned in the presser with Chud & Banner. Didn't know there were that many during draft prep. Wish all the rooks luck.

Kind of glad we got Jason Campbell now. In the event Weeden is a complete scrub, Campbell can be at least average.

As far as the roster goes, I see some promise. I'm still worried about stopping the run, but we are going to kill QB's this year.

Offensively, I think the new coaches will improve alone by throwing Shurmur's playbook into a barrel fire.

I don't see a way how this offense can get any worse after what we've had to watch over 2 years. I know that isn't saying much.

Well, we have an extremely good front 6 on the d-line. Still have a question on one of the ILB front. However when he runs a 4-3 base defense in that multiple front defense we could possibly have the best in the league.

Our secondary has either gotten worse or improved. We wont know until we see how our draft picks panned out. Either way I think we still have major concerns here until proven otherwise on the field.

Our offense in general got nothing done this off season. Yeah we signed some folks but I dont see any real upgrades anywhere. Just a bunch of bleh.

Special teams has definately gotten worse with the loss of phil dawson. I mean we lost at least 8 yards of field goal range maybe more. That hurts in tough games and will cost us points. I have the feeling nothing was going to keep Phil here. The man only has a few years left and wants a real chance for a ring. So while we took a loss here I dont see what really could have been done different.

Coaching I see as huge upgrades for our entire team. I see where we can make good strides to at least 7 wins this season and next season being a real playoff contender. We could not ask for better coaches IMHO. Coaching alone should see a huge difference between last year and this one. You already have members of the defense saying WOW there is a huge change in how predictable the offense is so it should be a lot more fun to watch.

The team added two veteran WRs who have produced in this league. Wish I had some idea how they might use the two TEs that were added. Still, Bess and Nelson, if healthy will improve this offense. Interesting to see how the RB, Lewis works out.

Bess and nelson are both bleh as in no real improvement over what we had. They are depth WR from other teams who put up the same crappy numbers as our depth WRs. There is nothing in my mind to be excited about or think they will be an improvement.

Bess is a bit slow and while catches the ball does not do much with it once he gets it. Only avgs 10 yards per catch a few touchdowns a year at best along with a fumble or two as well. If he gains 50 plus catches a year for us then we are not moving the ball well in a vertical passing game. Maybe if we picked him up as a FA it would not bug me as much.

David Nelson does intrigue me a bit with his height and speed. But the bills are starved for quality WR so why did they let him go? Something seems fishy about that. Still adding him to a Redzone along with all our tallest receivers sure makes it tough on a defense to stop jump balls.

I always look at things like this both Offensively and Defensively. And ask one question about both.

And this will usually give you a solid idea of what might be expected record wise. And then there's that "Couple Plays a Game" that can be the difference between a W and a L.

Offensive question---Is there any one player that a Defense needs to game plan around?

I see TWO---Gordon and Richardson. (We haven't had even ONE since 2007--And who ran that show? Ahhhhh. Mr. Chudzinski)

Defensive question---Is there any one player an Offense needs to game plan around?

The kind where your QB and Center have to LOCATE them and point them out as in "There He Is". Think about that. LOCATE. Multiple fronts meaning movement and different alignments. Here is where it could be interesting.

Is it the "Barkin' Man" Mingo? Kruger? How bout Ward? We've NEVER had that.

We don't look any better at all. We should have one nasty pass rush on defense but that's about it. This years draft was disappointing. I get why it was smart for next year, but overall it was a disappointing draft for the new regime.

Even if McFadden turns into a solid corner. he'll likely struggle this year. All of our later round picks probably won't even make the team or see much play time.

This team set itself up for next year's draft in case we just happen to need a Quarterback. The coaching staff is going to see what they can do with the young group of players we already have.

I don't know. Ask me again when we find out who makes the final roster and after a few games next season.. perhaps then I'll have a reasonable answer for you. (probably by then it will be evident and you won't need input LOL)

Bess has 5 years in and has only missed 3 games in 5 years from injury averaging about 700 yards and just over 2 TDs a season in Miami with the rock solid QB rotation of Pennington, Henne, Moore, and the rookie Tannehill...

Which of our depth receivers has achieved anything close to that? MoMass who can't stay on the field and averages about 400 yards a year? Cooper and his 200 yards? Norwood and his 200 yards?

David Nelson has been less productive but in 3 seasons he still has a 650 yard season, which beats any season MoMass has had, primarily because Nelson actually finished the season on the field.

It's not a mindblowing improvement, but they are, Bess specifically, better than any other WR we've had to be our possession type guy.

Why is everyone so upset about the Fullback position?? Isn't this the least important position on the team?? From what I've seen, we're going to be running out of the shotgun most of the time anyway, so I worry so much about the freaking fullback position.

Now second-line contain on the kick coverage team ... that's position's a mess!

They aren't worried about the fullback position, but if Owen Marecic's name appears, somebody just involuntarily pukes.... then a bunch of sympathy pukers show up.

Maybe cause the player we have to rely on at the FB position is about worthless. Whether we execute many plays with a fullback or not, is irrelevant. The fact is until we can upgrade that position, *when* we do have a FB in there, we can count on horrible performance and . poor production at that position.

Norv would be better off finding another blocker, or as you hinted maybe not even running a formation with a FB. In other words, if Owen is on the field, it should JUST be on a special teams play.

I remember when we drafted Marecic, and I asked why the hell we would waste a 4th round pick on a slow FB/LB, who isn't really that good at anything he does.

People assured me that he's be wonderful in the WCO.

Those people have faded away .........

Yeah, he was a FB/LB.

I wish that Harbaugh in Frisco would trade us 2 or 3 draft picks for him.
