A Suffolk, Virginia school suspended a second grader for pointing a pencil at another student and making gun noises. 7-year-old Christopher Marshall says he was playing with another student in class Friday, when the teacher at Driver Elementary asked them to stop pointing pencils at each other. "When I asked him about it, he said, 'Well I was being a Marine and the other guy was being a bad guy,'" said Paul Marshall, the boy's father. "It's as simple as that." Christopher's father was a Marine for many years. He thinks school leaders overreacted. "A pencil is a weapon when it is pointed at someone in a threatening way and gun noises are made," said Bethanne Bradshaw, a spokesperson for Suffolk Public Schools. http://www.nbc-2.com/story/22181880/pencil-gun-incident-leads-to-suspension

No, it is only a weapon if somebody is trying to stab another kid with it. Pointing it at somebody and saying "Pow pow" doesn't make it a weapon.

Dear young boys:
As of today, you are no longer allowed to be boys. You must play with barbies, my little ponys, and hula hoops.
If you are caught behaving like a boy, you will be suspended.
Sincerely, The Man

I'm reminded of an old story of a progressive day care that took this approach and forced boys to play with girl toys.. the first day one of the boys was sent home because he took the Ken doll, bent it at the waist, pointed it another kid and went "pow pow"...

I was either in second or third grade at Commodore Grade School in Perryopolis, PA at the time. There was an open grassy yard next to the school where we played during recess.
One day there was road work going on in front of the school. A guy was using a Jack Hammer breaking up the road so they could repair it.
Well, if you've heard a jack hammer, it kinda sounds like a machine gun that you might have seen on TV at that time.
So here we were, maybe 20 or more little kids.. we would rush the jack hammer guy and when he would turn it on, we'll all fall down pretending to be shot by machine guns.., It was a blast.. Teachers as well as the construction workers were just cracking up.. I think they must have thought it to be rather inventive.
That could not happen today.. so sad..

How long before we star punishing pre crime ? I have been reading some studies that hint that they can determine who will and who won't potentially commit crimes .

Cute story Daman... so when did you commit what I'm sure is your first of many murders? Have you achieved serial killer status yet? Obviously anybody who thinks a jackhammer sounds like a machine gun and finds some amusement in that must be destined for a life of crime.

Except that doesn't justify a suspension of a 2nd grader, so they needed something.

it can. if a child is constantly disruptive over a stretch and other punishments have not worked as a deterrent, then I could see the suspension being a "last straw" measure to try to knock some sense into him.
more likely, it was an overreaction by a stressed/frustrated teacher (and I feel for them with the restrictions they have on them now), but we don't know the full details from either side here.

Unless he had been sent to the office previously for disruptions, the suspension is not warranted in my opinion.

No we don't. but my guess is that the teacher, vice principal, principal and probably a couple other people were involved in this decision so my guess is they knew full well what they were doing and this was not the knee jerk reaction of a stressed teacher.

You know ..... I did this stuff all the time as a kid .... and I have never killed anyone. You know what that tells me? I'm an under-achiever. I need to get out there, get heavily armed, and start blowing some people away. (yeah, that's sarcasm, in case the PC police are watching from afar ....)

Lol.....too many Bethanne's and not enough Marines in this world is my opinion.
Maybe they should just kick this 2nd grader out of school all together...it's just a boy.
I am sure they will allow him back as long as they can drug him.

Yea my first thought was you haven't lived long enough.
Having these posts of something happening in A school and making general comments usually makes me queasy.
There are a ton-crap of schools with a ton-crap of kids who point pop-tarts, pencils, fingers, and other things that never ever get reported or most of the time even noticed.
Do schools or teachers ever get credit for NOT making it an issue?
NO!
And I'm going to take this the press to complain about it!!!

According to this article, it wasn't an overreaction, it's a policy...
"I got a call from Christopher's school at 12:30 on Friday," the boy's mother, Wendy Marshall, 34, a stay-at-home mother of five, told Yahoo! Shine. "His teacher told me that Christopher and his friend were playing with pencils, making machine gun and 'bang bang' noises. I asked if they were pointing the pencils at anyone else, if they were angry or hostile, disrupting class, or refused to stop when asked and the teacher said no. I told her that I would speak to Christopher but his teacher said she was under obligation to report them anyway."
web page
In the link is a copy of the actual disciplinary report as filed which states that when he was asked to stop, he did.

On a related note:
Just the other day, this kid who works on the weekends with me, is curently a senior in high school. And he was telling me that he was given this assignment where he had to create a multimedia presentation on a subject to present to the class. i guess some kind of communications class or something.
At any rate, the kid decided that he was going to do a video on gun safety fro the class. As an avid outdoorsy-type kid, hunter and fisherman, he felt very passionate about this. And so he ran it by his teacher, and she was totally on board with it. She was all about him instilling gun safety tips to his fellow students.
But it turned out, that his ideas on gun safety, and her ideas on gun safety, were two, totally different things. He showed me the video he had, and in it, he discusses three very important rules with guns; always assume a gun is loaded, never point a gun at anything you do not intend to shoot, and always make sure that the barrel is pointed in a safe direction. He then uses a gun as a visual aid in the video, showing the safety, how to load, unload the gun, how to check if its loaded or not, and at the end fires it down-range at a target.
Well, seems like a good presentation....then he tells me that he was failed by the teacher and given saturday school because he used a real gun in the project and the teacher told him that his gun safety video should of been about how to avoid guns period, and should have never have actually featured a real firearm.....I guess the idiot teacher and principal called the boys father too, but they were caught off-guard when dad explained to them that the gun was in fact his sons, as he was raised to use guns responsibly, and was given one for his 18th birthday...
Some of the people teaching our youth in this country are complete morons....

Again, it's the zero-tolerance programs that we have. They're very black and white and allow no real room for anything. But if I was that boy, I'd make another video showing how to literally avoid guns. I'd put on my cheesiest discovery channel accent and go explore the natural habitats of guns.

I hear that a teacher is given something like $80,000 to settle out of court after he is fired by the school because he stomps on my beloved flag and now teachers are suspending little boys for being little boys. I can't imagine what life will be like 20 years from now.

See, this is how we teach critical thinking and decision making. This is also how we celebrate diversity that some people enjoy firearms for sport and hunting and others don't.... Oh wait, it isn't, this is a teacher grading based on their own social world view... never mind.

that is funny. if they failed my kid on that, then they'd have an earful for sure (especially since he ran the idea past the teacher first - if the teacher isn't smart enough to understand what "gun safety" is then that is the teacher's fault. how would avoiding guns entirely wouldn't make a good presentation?) anyways, reminds me of the only time I ever failed a paper in school. for Arbor Day / Earth Day, we had to write a paper on some type of plant/tree/etc. probably 3rd or 4th grade. I was the crazy over-achieving type kid, so I went and did a ton of research on all of these plants that pharmaceutical companies were using to help cure diseases and do research on for future cures. It just so happened that these plants only existed in the Amazon rainforest and they were extracting them out in the same areas that were being deforested (they had contracts with the lumber companies - give them a few months to clear out the valuable plants for research before they cleared the land). Automatic failure from my teacher (to be fair, it did end up teaching me a valuable lesson that when writing a paper or giving a presentation, you need to understand the audience to which you are doing it for)

did you develop that paper into a movie script? As an aside, is there a worse actress (who is just an actress in Hollywood) than Lorraine Bracco?

that's fantastic. and the timelines match up okay (I would have been in 6th or 7th grade when the movie came out). I don't remember that movie, but it's possible that I saw it (since Connery is in it), used the idea, and did research for the paper. Or, that teacher stole my research, wrote a movie script, changed her name to Peachy Markowitz, and made millions while giving me a failing grade!
