I agree. A good example of stats aren't just for losers.

*LOL* .... are u for real ... I just gotta make sure I understand this ..

your telling me that because our brain trust needed a statistical analysis to tell them that getting ahead is way way better than getting behind in a football game PROVES STATS AREN'T FOR LOSERS!!!!

*LOL* ... that's hysterical .....

u guys must also think that Lombardi is rocket scientist material because of his BRILLIANT insight into a 14 point lead being a real good thing also ... what an out of the box thinker ...

what's next on the STATS AREN'T FOR LOSERS crusade ..... if u score more points than your opponent you win 100% of the time .... ANOTHER BRILLIANT ANALYSIS BROUGHT TO U SOLELY BY STATS ....

Do you have a bat signal that alerts you to a STATS ARE FOR LOSERS post?

This is how I picture it. And if so then I'll post it from time to time to make sure you swing by our corner of the interweb.

Interesting thoughts on the pass v run theories .... great debate ...

not sure where I stand ... love old style smash mouth football .... but the rules may have made it that an outdated philosophy ....

the one true smash mouth team left that had great success was the Niners ... and now ... not sure there a smash mouth team anymore with Colin taking over ...

the gnats team that won the last two SB's was a throwback team also .... but there running game was average at best ....

the other really good teams over the last 4 or 5 years ... pats, packers, colts and even the stilers were led by great passing games with poor running games that played very little D ... this is the philosophy we seem to be taking ....

witch ones better??? .. who knows .. u can make a GREAT ARGUMENT for both of them ..... hopefully we can find something that works for us .. and with T-Rich I don't think it will be as pass heavy as the fore mentioned teams but from what Lombardi said and how we drafted we will definitely be tossing the ball around the yard more than we may be used to ... and as long as it works .. that's FINE BY ME!!!!!

*L* .. your such a .... well u know .. ...

I prefer u send the bat signal to me via PM as opposes to just sending it out to cyber space ... statistically that's a much better way of alerting me to IMPROPER STAT USAGE POSTS ....

DiamDawg, may I make a suggestion? If you struggle with basic math, it is best to simply come out say it, "I struggle with basic math." Your post above is way to wordy. It came across as insulting to those of us who do understand basic math.

Something else that might help is adding a little statement to your signature section stating you are not very confident with basic math. This will remind others to tone it down or add a little explanation when posting anything with analytics.

Going forward I will try my best to keep it simple.

It's not hard to understand what he was saying, and he's right.

Any idiot, including Lombardi, can tell you if you're up by 14 and can stop the other teams passing game, you have good odds of winning. That if you continue to pile on points, you can win.

Trying to make that sound complex, or brilliant on Lombardis part is silly actually.

It was a Duh! moment I think. I'm in the Temp services business.. A long time ago, I had a guy that worked for me that wanted an opportunity for promotion. So I decided I'd give him a few opportunities to stand up in front of people and give his ideas a platform.

His first attempt was so silly, I damn near pee in my pants laughing., His idea was, if we put 10 more people to work with X increase in Margin we can make X increase in profit.

While not untrue, it was also obvious. What I was hoping for is HOW he expected to add those 10 people. What steps could be taken by folks to get to that goal.

Anyway, I doubt I explained that very well.. I tried..LOL

When I was managing restaurants, I had one simple rule for my employees ....

The customer experience was all important. That means that we would treat every customer properly, with respect and in a polite manner. We would smile, and say "please and thank you" at every customer contact point. We would own up to mistakes and fix them immediately. My employees were empowered to fix any "small" problem a customer had immediately. (Like a sandwich being made wrong, or something like that)

In short, we would make customers happy. Period.

In every store I managed, sales went up, and did so quickly. It was a simple formula, but you would be amazed how many businesses in general, and restaurants in particular, just refused to treat customers well. Maybe you wouldn't be all that amazed. It's such a simple formula ..... yet many spend their time on exotic campaigns trying to bring in and keep customers ...... when the simplest and best way to do so is absolutely free and incredibly simple. It's not "complex", "Brilliant, and by no means "genius" ...... but it is effective.

Yes but YTown, you actually had a pro active plan that you executed to achieve those results. You made it work.

Saying something and doing something are two different things. Your comments are based on things you've actually done.

I'm sure every football fan understands that if you get ahead by 14 points, stop their passing game and keep scoring points, you'll likely win games.

Now if I actually see that plan executed, I'll be very happy with it. You executed your plan and it was a very basic concept. I doubt executing the plan Lombardi described will be as easily accomplished because there are 31 other teams that will be trying to achieve those same goals.

What have the Browns, and Lombardi, done so far? They have taken the path they laid out. They have relentlessly pursued pass rushers. They have done everything that they could to upgrade the front 7.

How many teams actually attack from the word go on both sides of the ball? How many try to score TDs on every drive?

We didn't. Not last year. We played it safe. We played field position.

How many teams actually attack and attack and attack?

Peyton Manning teams do so on offense. They usually find it possible and preferable to do so on defense, even when they don't necessarily have the talent to do so, because they feel safe to take chances. The Packers and Patriots attack, seemingly, on every play, especially on offense.

Do the Dolphins? The Vikings? The Raiders? The Rams? The Jets, Bills, Titans, Jaguars, or Chefs? How about the Bears, Bucs, or Cardinals?

I can't wait to see us attack the opposition, on offense and defense. I hope that we do as Lombardi suggests ..... and attack the other team right off the bus. It might be lip service, but thus far, the Browns have gone after players to do just as Lombardi suggests.

To be fair, there's a big difference between attacking and attacking successfully.

Looking at that list, yes, a lot of teams you ask about attack and attack. Nobody in the NFL attacks on defense more than the Jets. The Lions and Chiefs were among the top of the NFL in blitzing percentages. Tampa Bay, Detroit, Chicago and Oakland all attacked on offense.

The problem was, they didn't execute.

It's not really fair to say attacking teams win, teams who don't attack lose. The numbers simply don't support that. There are plenty of teams that love to gamble on offense and defense, attacking constantly, but they suck because they can't execute.

At least Lombardi gets it! So tired of previous coaches only playing to win until they get a 1 point lead and then going into a play not to lose mode that almost always loses.

An offense that will aggressively try to score every down is mostly likely going to score more often. Pairing that with a heavy passrush meant to get the ball back to said offense quicker and more often so they have more chances to score is a perfect combo.

I am 100% confident that barring injuries that by next year our team will be in the playoffs and one of the best scoring teams in the nfl.

Pitt .... I have no probs with what Lombardi said ... wanna make sure u understand what I was saying and who's balls I was breakin ....

There's 4 or 5 different ways to build a winning football team ... when Lombardi used those stats he was just giving credence to the style they have chosen to build this football team to fit .... I've got no probs with him stating the obvious there ...

I think Lombardi was a BRUTAL ASS hire that could set us back but I have zero problem with him using the obvious stats to show why they did what they did .... my ire was directed at others ...

just wanna make sure u and others understand what I meant ....

Bugs .... If I was U I'd just go ahead and put me on ignore cause math is actually one of the very few things I'm very very good at .... I do addition and subtraction quicker than a calculator .... that's the truth ... and that's about as basic as it gets in math .... so if U think I don't understand that ... well then your gonna think I'm the dumbest person on earth if U keep reading what else I say ....

You got it bro. kind of a trick question in a way. Glad to see you posting your opinions. There are so many unknowns, I'm not sure what to think.. Lombardi scares me given his dismal track record.. BUT.. so far no major screw ups.

I know, right!?

I mean, if it was (30 * 1/2 + 15) * 0.56, THEN it'd have some real meaning.

I don't think Lombardi was trying to sound complex or brilliant.

I agree w/what you are saying and said the same thing earlier in the thread. However, I think he didn't really expound on it and the idiot reporters didn't question him about it. They probably were questioning him about Mingo's weight, instead. LOL

I think the Brown's strategy is to be very aggressive on offense early on in games. We'll probably see more deep passes early in games than we have in a long time. We probably feel that we have some big-play guys and that their strengths lie in making big plays, rather than smarter guys who can systematically move the chains.

But again, like you said, you do have to execute. If we don't hit on those big plays---we can be looking at an extraordinary amount of turnovers and 3 and outs. That would lead to a long, long season.

I wasn't really so much knocking what he said, as I was how some people seemed to make it sound so "deep and thoughtful".

It's just a basic plan of attack and he wasn't really saying anything revolutionary or insightful.

Did anybody expect a complex answer?

We want to stop the run... why? Because it gives a better chance to win.

We want to get an early lead... why? Because it gives a better chance to win.

We want to be able to throw the ball better... why? Because it gives a better chance to win.

We want to be able to rush the passer... why? Because it gives a better chance to win.

We want to keep scoring even with a lead... why? Because it gives a better chance to win.

We want to be good on special teams... why? Because it gives a better chance to win.

So, we want to be able to throw the ball to build a lead, then be able to rush the passer... why? Because it gives a better chance to win.

People who try to seek out the deeper meaning of what these guys say in public always crack me up...
