I'm not getting off his back. I knew there would be a bunch of people defending the guy and trashing people who weren't buying his BS. That's fine if you want to live in Make Believe Land, but I won't be joining you. This quote tells me all I need to know:

Quote:

For a player to be suspended, he must have violated the policy at least one other time. That means that Gordon -- who failed three marijuana tests in college and was dismissed from Baylor and Utah -- has tested positive at least five times since October, 2010."

That is a problem! Excuses do not make problems go away. In fact, making excuses for a guy like this typically compounds the problem because he never becomes accountable.

I said it when we picked the kid; I said it when people were counting him as one of our next great players; and I will say it again---Smoking marijuana is not what is so bad, it's the complete, utter lack of discipline and disregard for his teammates that is so troublesome. The guy has failed tests numerous times. He's probably received several warnings at Baylor, too. Nothing has worked. He is a talented guy, but he simply can't be counted on.

And if he is messing w/Purple Drank like I suspect he is, then we have an even greater problem.

Some people simply expect and assume the very worst in people. Those people will never change. I know his history is jaded, yet that only gives those who expect the worst fuel for their fire.

Rather than expect the worst, I hope for the best. And I've seen no evidence showing anything otherwise than this was a mistake. So rather than point fingers and make ASSumptions, rather than make ASSertions with nothing to back them up, I'll take this at face value and hope that going forward we see nothing like this again.

Well put Pit!

The player has to know what he is putting in his body. If he does not know and still does it , that is stupid. Josh did a stupid thing and now the team and himself personally suffer the consequences.

If it turns out Gordon was in fact smoking pot again. I hope the FO will send in Alonzo Mourning or some guys like Michael Irving, Jerry Rice, Marvin Harrison, or even Randy Moss to try and get his head straight. With the maturity Little showed last season after talking with Mourning I have to think someone could get through to Gordon.

Or the story what he said and he accidentally took codeine. In which case... he earned all the doubt in the world. But he is still my favorite player on the team. I really hope he is around for another decade without all the drug issues. The guy will be a top receiver in the NFL if he can stay on the field.

jc,

I'm certainly no doctor, but how common is it for a doctor to prescribe a narcotic cough syrup to treat a bacterial infection... in which symptoms do not include a cough... which is normally treated with antibiotics?

webMD

Seems fishy. I'm not ready to call bs yet, but the radar's getting louder.

I was prescribed Codeine when I didn't even have strep, I just had a really sore throat about a two years ago. So I know it does happen, but come on, they tell you it's liquid codeine.

It's not oh here's some "cough syrup". They specifically asked me, "Are you allergic to Codeine?" Then said "here is some liquid Codeine, take it as directed".

The whole story is crap. He didn't know...garbage.

Kinda my thoughts as well. My daughter used to get strep quite often. Never once did she get a prescription cough medicine, let alone even NEED cough medicine. I know, she was young, he's older.......

On to another issue: The Browns have doctors in their employ. I would tend to think the Browns (as all pro sports teams) have education classes for players on what proper protocol is when taking a prescription (if there is a prescription that is). Call us. We have a list of every single banned substance, and every single prescription that contains any of them. Do not take a prescribed drug for ANYTHING until we can verify if it is okay.

One other issue here: The nfl cannot and will not say what the drug was. They have their evidence, they took action on that evidence. And, they will not publicly state what drug it is/was.

The PLAYER? They can say anything they want......they can say it was a prescription. They can say it was a bad test. They can say whatever they want publicly, and what the player says is the only information we get.......aside from how long they get banned.

jc,

I was thinking that I remember a rule where a player, even with a prescription, was required to notify the NFL before taking the medication. Perhaps he failed the drug test but had a legal prescription thus the two game suspension? Either way it is still his fault but I would feel a lot better about the situation.

yea. heard that when haden got suspension. now that I read that link above I find it hard to believe the union would let that go.

"OVERVIEW OF THE POLICY ON ANABOLIC STEROIDS
AND RELATED SUBSTANCES

WHAT IF I VIOLATE THE POLICY?
-- First Positive Test: Medical evaluation (if Advisor directs) and suspension for a
minimum of 4 regular and/or postseason games
-- Second Positive Test: Medical evaluation (if Advisor directs) and suspension for
a minimum of 8 regular and/or postseason games
-- Third Positive Test: Minimum 1 year suspension
-- Players will not be paid during suspensions
-- Players are subject to discipline for positive tests at any time during the year"

Not Alonzo. We are paying Jim Brown for situations like these, IF the hidden truth is abuse. To talk with the distracted youth and get them back on the right track. Not sure how successful this will be-- Will the youth listen to a person like JB that has made poor personal decision many, many times in his life plus can he be in Cleveland as frequently as he should be? I mean, he is almost 80 yrs old living in L.A. How much travel can he withstand?

As much as Alonzo seemingly helped Little, Haslem decided to put someone on the payroll for this. Time to execute.

Strep isn't your normal bacterial infection. It can be very, very painful in severe cases. That said, not every case requires anything as heavy duty as codeine.

In Gordon's case, he's an idiot. Even if he did nothing really "wrong", he entered the league under a cloud of suspicion, and he has to know that he has to do everything 100% by the book. He can't assume anything. He has to make sure that he's doing things correctly, and checking on anything prescribed by any doctor not associated with the team/NFL.

So what now guys? We may as' well get Marvin Lewis on the phone and see if we can orchestrate a trade for Gordon. Get this felon, this trouble maker, this drug head off the team huh?

Since he was caught with something some of you may take on a daily bases, and now has become worthless, maybe we could get a FB outta the deal? Maybe if we throw in some draft picks too we could get a FB?

I for one am looking forward to seeing him in preaseason and shortly thereafter in regular season... I'm still a fan of yours Josh. All make mistakes and it wasn't a hardcore drug IMO.

So I say Jim Brown was hired to talk to the youth, which both he and Haslem confirmed was a piece of his role, and I am hating on the FO? I say use Brown over Alonzo because one is on the payroll? Where do you connect the dots here?

Again, you make zero sense, prove no logic behind to anything you say, and come across as a troll following someone around that comments on this board. Grow up, Peter Pan.

no you said It with your little backstabbing attitude for both the FO and one of the great players the browns ever had. and that's what is expected from the self proclaimed Memphis Frankenstein. that's just a fact.

What is "just a fact" is:

1. Brown is now on the payroll.
2. He has a more than checkered past.
3. That past MAY have an effect on those he talks to. A "practice what you preach" thing. Don't forget this guy was thrown in jail sometime in the early 2000s for spousal stuff. I won't even get into the other things prior to that that are just appalling.

One thing that may aid JB is his track record with his non-profit he has that focuses on troubled youth in the inner-cities. Amer-I-Can, I think is the name. His experience from that will be valuable in a situation to have a positive impact on Gordon, which is why Haslem probably hired him- to deal with many players that come from less than ideal situations. And quite possibly something Brown wanted to do with the Browns for a very long time.

Look, I'm not necessarily a fan of hiring Jim Brown. I think it may end up being a waste of money. But if you hire a person to fill a role like this then, use him. Not Alonzo Mourning. Greg Little proactively did this on his own. The Browns now have a resource to push towards Gordon, but with JB living in LA I'm not sure how much of a consistent impact he will have on Browns' players.

And him being the best Brown ever (which I agree with) has little to do with this part of this role. Sorry. His experience in his non-profit trumps that IMO.

Again, not sure where you get backstabbing the FO. Just a chance for you to take a jab at a poster you actively chose not to agree with.

I hope I've fully laid all this out for you because I'm not going to address this with you anymore.

I end up choosing to replace complex words for simpler ones so you may understand me better.....

Actually, 8 out of 10 times, I want to add comments to my original thought. I don't believe adding a separate post just for something as small as a sentence or two although it does happen from time to time. Beyond that, I see errors in my typing and correct it. I recommend you adhere to the same protocol. For all those who are interested in my typing mechanics (1), there you go.

Just guessing, but it might be because of HIPAA privacy laws, since it was allegedly prescribed by his doctor.

Well, it can't be HIPAA if it isn't prescribed by a Doctor, so either HIPAA related which to me, puts him in the clear, or it wasn't.

I don't think it's that clear cut. He probably did not notify the NFL of the prescribed medicine. The codeine is a banned substance, hence the fine, and they may have lessened the suspension in light of him providing proof that it was actually prescribed.

He has probably learned an expensive lessen (around $250k) for not notifying the NFL of the prescription and providing proof before being testing. He probably would have been advised to seek a different type of medicine (and they may have even suggested something).

If I had my input about it, all players seeking medical attention should have the team doctors (and pharmacists) doing the diagnosis and prescribing and filling any medicinal products. That way, the impetus could be taken off the players and put onto the team to avoid these kinds of problems.

It would not be difficult to implement. And if a player wanted to consult their own doctors and pharmacists, they could do so but it should be recommended that any prescriptions be cleared with team doctors.

Dudes a moron either way ... could care less weather it was yet another bout of mary jane or a prescribed med ....

he knew he was one mistake away from a 2 - 4 game suspension and two mistakes away from a year off ... Ya ... if he had a clue he wouldn't put anything in his body w/o clearing it with the browns ... pretty sure where ever he got the scrip from has a puter with e-mail .... Skype or at least a fax machine .... and i'm pretty sure if Chud or Norv get a call from Josh's doc that he needs a scrip and they need to clear it through our medical staff that would be done toot sweet ...

but naaaa ... josh using most likely the same logic that got him booted from two schools in back to back years decides to just take the script and then after the doc tells him theres codeine in it doesn't think twice ... and if the doc didn't ... I can't imagine a pharmacy where your not going to get a consultation and be told then .... oh wait ..... let me guess ... the doc didn't tell Josh and someone else picked it up and failed to mention what the pharmacist told them ....

ya ... that's the ticket ....

and for that reason I WON'T GET OFF HIS BACK GM ..... hes got way to much riding on this to just be taking scripts w/o running it through the Browns .. I mean WTF ... U don't think the browns have talked to ALL THERE PLAYERS about this exact thing ... if not .. we need to start over ... *L*

like I said I could really care less ... dudes a moron and a year long suspension waiting to happen weather it was weed or a script ..... and that's all that truly matters .... he is by far the most physically talented WR on our team ... NO ONE CAN MAKE UP FOR HIS LOSS cause no one can do the things physically he is capable of ... and for that reason I hope he proves me wrong!!! I really really do ......

I agree with Vers that dude toked the whacky .... and its not because I expect the worsted in people Pit .... its because his history says he is more than capable of making moronic decisions when it comes to whatever his drug of choice is ...

DUDE GOT KICKED OUT OF TWO COLLEGES .... u know hard that is ..... that is not easy at all ... how many times did he have to get caught doing whatever it was he was doing .... not only did he get kicked out of college he got kicked out of a Big 12 school ... when was the last time anyone got kicked out of any big 12 school ... *LOL* ... only conference worse than them is the SEC ...

does that mean hes guilty this time .... nope .. absolutely not ... but crap .. u gotta at least take into account .... I mean if someone has 3 DWI's and leaves a bar at close staggering ... gets into there car and grinds it 2 or 3 times ... then proceeds to swerve all over the road that doesn't mean they had a few too many ... but hey ... i'm inclined to believe that's prolly the most likely possibility ... but that's just me ..

u guys wanna believe that he got sick ... went to the docs on his own ... got a script and went and had it filled and took it w/o ever getting ahold of the browns and he's just a victim here .... go ahead ... that's your opinion and your completely entitled to it ... we'll just have to disagree ....

Do I believe him when he says it was prescribed cough medicine? I'd like to. But I don't.

Should he have been smarter with whatever it was he was doing? Sure. That goes without saying. But I suspect his age and his upbringing have a good deal to do with his actions.

The question that matters is, basically, will he wake up and smell the coffee? Will the light bulb come on? <Insert your cliche here>.

Honestly, my question would be, "Are the Browns doing anything to steer him to the right path?" It's not their obligation to watch him 24/7 nor could they but if they're not doing something to try and straighten this problem out then they're just plain stupid. Then too, the thought did enter my mind that perhaps the FO would just as soon see him fail to justify their purge of Tom Heckert. Could they be that petty? I don't know. But stranger stuff than that happens all the time so who knows....

I think that's the furthest thing from their minds. heckert has way too many players still on the team to be wanting one of the best to fail.

SFAIK, Gordon's issues have always been with pot, no prescription drugs or anything "harder". Is this correct?

I'm wondering how this was handled in explaining to him the NFL policy. I'm thinking he was told "NO street drugs, EVER! Prescription drugs from a doctor might be OK. (with prior notification)". I would guess that street drugs were emphasized, and that possibly the acceptable prescription bit was somewhat "glossed over". Steroids probably mentioned as important to avoid.

Prescription, fairly mild, painkillers from a licensed physician might have been understood to be not such a big concern.

How does this "prior notification" work? Player makes a phone call? I would assume the doctor has to be involved, but now we have privacy issues. Is nearly every doctor notification accepted, is it almost a rubber stamp? Would a typical "dumb jock" assume that approval is almost automatic, would his only real concern be steroids, would he assume that somebody other than him was supposed to make that "prior notification"?

Codeine would be a major break from his previous pattern and I am hoping this really was an honest mistake.

One more violation and I say we drop the guy from the team. I'm sick of players getting multiple chances. If they don't want their career badly enough to stop using drugs, don't give them the opportunity. I don't care if he is our #1 WR, #1 QB, or backup punter, I have no tolerance for this kind of idiotic crap.

Yes I do give him the benefit of the doubt. Until other wise as it is the only reported "FACT" out there.

Are you saying his explanation is a fact? Really. You know darn well that the NFL won't say a word no matter what the player says. And it is not a fact just because Gordon said it. Here are the real facts:

--He got suspended before his second year even began.
--He got fined.
--He was kicked out of Baylor for failing two drug tests.
--He was kicked out of Utah for failing a drug test.
--He lied about the Utah situation.

But hey, we are supposed to believe him. LOL

Some people simply expect and assume the very worst in people. Those people will never change. I know his history is jaded, yet that only gives those who expect the worst fuel for their fire.

That's the spirit. Rip the character of anyone who doesn't agree w/you.

It's amazing what a little bit of semantics can do to making an argument. I'll remember to point this out when you get upset w/people who are hoping for the best w/the new FO. LMAO man, you criticize people for hoping for the best in one situation and then again for not hoping for the best. Must be nice to jump around like that.

His history isn't all that ancient. And doesn't lend all that much credibility to his story.

PDR...history is just that...HISTORY. I see no Behavior pattern to be ASSumed still exists. Let me explain my thought process.

1. Age with age comes Maturity.

2. He was not a student. He did not care about his scholarships. Combined with youth made the bad choices.

3. Now this is about MONEY. He is now what? 22 and we are talking about Millions for himself his future n his family. combined with some maturity. All the reason to have a different behavioral pattern from the days of college. Do you do the same stupid things you did in college. I dont and most of America does not.

On this HISTORY...I can give him the benefit of the doubt. We have a report of how it happened with no subtantial retorts on it not happening that way. Just speculation. Not everything Negative is REAL.

Just clicking,

Until it's proven otherwise, I'll take the kid at his word..

And whatever the reason is will eventually come to light. It always does.

Until then, I want him on the field catching 50 yard bombs.

All this bruhaha over did he or didn't he,, I'll leave that to the folks on here that think they know it all.
