Kipnis is hitting the leather off the ball lately. He looks extremely focused and dialed in in every AB. I love how upset he got when he was robbed of his possible fourth double in game one. I think the bats have been sufficient for us, too. But, I would definitely like to see more production from Swish and Reynolds. I know.... They both got some hits when we needed them yesterday, but Reynolds puts up some really bad looking ABs.

IMO, if the Indians are playing meaningful games in September, you will see the large crowds again at Progressive. Maybe not sellouts, but crowds in the + 30,000 range. Kids being out of school now and better weather should increase attendance in the next two months, even given that (imo) it is still a pretty depressed economy in Greater Cleveland.

Also to be considered - road construction downtown (Innerbelt Bridge, repaving on E9th and Ontario) and the recent Shoreway closing for the movie makers haven't helped either. The Indians couldn't have been too happy with the city fathers who made that arrangement with Hollywood. I know people on the west side that were taking two hours just to get to work in the morning when the Shoreway was closed - how many of those west siders do you suppose were anxious to get back in their cars and drive back downtown to a game after fighting traffic all day just to get to-and-from work?

The good news: Indians sit 2 games out of 1st, and 2-1/2 games out in the wild card at the half-way point of the season. The bats appear to have awakened. Injured guys returning (Cabrera, Swisher, Perez) and the easier half of the schedule ahead give hope that the Indians could win 88-90 games this year and have a decent shot at the playoffs.

The bad news: two of our brightest pitching prospects got lit up last night. Bauer and Carrasco both showed they're not ready for the big stage. Indians need McAllister back healthy.

Some local sports yackers were asking if the Indians should seek pitching or a bat at the trade deadline - they all thought we need a bat. I disagree, I think we need a matchup lefty in the bullpen and another starter.

we definitely need an arm. I'll take my chances with our lineup.

I agree. The bats seem sufficient to me. Lefty out of the pen and another quality starter would be fantastic. If I had to choose just one, give me the starter.

I think that we are set at the plate. So let's look at the pitching.

Starters:

In the playoffs I think you need 3 starters. As of now who would that be? Definitely Masterson. When he is on he is as unhittable as anyone in the league. But then who? Ubaldo? Very good when he is on but very unpredictable. Probably McAllister once healthy and assuming he returns to form. Kluber? Maybe. He has be pretty tough more outings than not. Will he continue to improve or will he hit a wall seeing as this is his first full season in the majors. I would say we have 1 good starter and 4 solid starters (if you include Kazmir).

Who could be availaem.

I would love to add Cliff Lee, but I'd be shocked if the Dolans would be willing to take on his salary. It would be a nice shock, though. I think Lee has a veto clause in his contact, and I've also read that he was none too thrilled with his treatment when he was here, so I'm not sure he'd come back. One bullpen lefty I'd be interested in is Matt Thornton of the White Sox. The White Sox have shown a propensity to throw in the towel early over the years, and they might be willing to deal him.

With the money that Dolan shelled out in the off-season, I would be stunned beyond words if he were to approve that kind of salary addition. Lee is signed not just through this year, but will make $25 million in 2014 and 2015, and a $27.5 million vesting option in 2016, with a $15 million buyout.

I just can't see many teams wanting to take on that contract, and especially not the Indians.

Agreed that Lee is probably cost prohibitive but I don't see any other starters out there that would be a major upgrade.

Agree with you on Santana. I got a snicker when I was reading the list of potentially available pitchers and it showed RA Dickey - the thought of Santana catching a knuckleballer was humorous, I thought. I think he should be a DH/1B, and I don't like him at 1B all that much. But C is one of those positions where I think you sacrifice offense for defense, like SS. If Marson is healthy, I'd like to see him back up Gomes, with Santana only catching once in a while.

Reportedly the Indians are one of ten teams on Yovani Gallardo's no trade list.

I agree it's a beautiful stadium, and the Dolans have spent money. I recently wanted to take my son to a game, and I couldn't get any tickets (even bleachers!) for under $25+handling etc... per ticket. That's close to $65 for 2 tickets, which just scratches the surface. At least $10 for parking, $7 for my son to get a hot dog and drink, so we are at $82 for an evening. That's still pretty expensive to me. It seems that it was a lot easier to get less expensive tickets last year. I'd love to know where you are getting "dirt cheap" tickets so we could go to a few games

Let's see .... he doesn't want to play for:

(AL East)

1 Boston
2. Baltimore
3, Yankees
5. Toronto

(AL Central)

1. Detroit
2. Cleveland

(AL West)

3. Los Angeles
5. Houston

(NL Central)

1. Pittsburgh

(NL East)

3. Philly

Kind of a weird list. He seems like he wants to stay away from the top teams in the AL, and really prefers to stay in the NL.

It's weird that he won't go to LA, but Oakland, San Diego, and San Francisco would be OK.

Just go downtown and get a ticket off a scalper. There's a guy who has a shop front he seems to work out of around 9th and prospect. Not the normal hassle like you seem to have to have with the other guys walking around "looking for tickets". I paid 12 bucks each for tickets the other day for section 109 about 10 rows in.

I think you can get $10 tickets in the bleachers when you buy in advance online and print at home. They have split the bleachers into upper and lower sections. The upper sections appear to be $10 for any games (bought in advance, online, you print), and the lower bleachers appear to be $10 for certain teams on weeknights only. Try the RTA Park 'n Ride to save parking $$, and go on a Dollar Dog night to save on concessions. I'm guessing you could take your son and spend about $40-45.

http://cleveland.indians.mlb.com/ticketing/pricing.jsp?c_id=cle&layout=gameflow#date=06/30/2013

Edit: Example; you can go to an upcoming Friday night game, July 12, vs KC, get dollar hotdogs, and see fireworks for $10 in the Upper Leftfield Bleachers.

lol. Probably doesn't want to be a Pirate because until this season the Brewers had beaten them roughly 489 out of the last 500 times they played. Wouldn't want that dirty Godless Brewer anyway.

I don't know a lot about Gallardo - maybe he has great potential, great stuff - but with a 6-7 record, 4.20 ERA, and 1.39 WHIP, he should be happy anybody wants him. I agree with you though, if doesn't want to be here then I don't want him.

Lucky for me the game is on wgn, so I can watch today. Unlucky for me ken harrelson or whatever his name is, is calling the game. What a total hilljack. "He gown".

You would think with Chicago being a major metropolitan area you'd be able to find someone who can properly pronounce the English language. If you were to tell me this guy called games for a single A team somewhere in bfe Iowa, I'd say that sounds about right

Turn off the volume - you don't need announcers if you're watching the game. Or maybe they have closed caption on the telecast. Crappy announcers can wreck the game.

The Chicago TV announcers are the worst. The new color guy, from the Cubs team a while back, he's okay. But Hawk is downright worthless. And most of that is because he's a 99% homer.

But it evens out, their radio team is amazing. I could listen to them call a Astros/Marlins double header. Yes, they're that good (maybe Vin Scully and Tom Hamilton beats them, but they're up there).

Oh, one more thing, Hawk mentioned this was the first Indian 4-game road sweep of the White Sox ever. That's impressive for as long as these team have been playing.

Detroit is really feeling the heat.

It's no coincidence that the team is playing better since we got a few guys back from injury.

Go Tribe.

Harrelson had it wrong - shocking, I know - this was the Indians first 4 game sweep in Chicago since 1948. Its been 65 years, also the last time we were World Champs. Is it an omen?

Nah.

Steve Stone is a Cleveland guy, and I think he does a good job filling in all the dead air when Hawk goes into shut down mode whenever the Sox are getting destroyed.

I always thought he got a raw deal with the Cubs for basically telling it like it is. It's not his fault most baseball players are sensitive crybabies (I'm sorry, but it's true)

Awesome weekend for the Tribe though. Took in the game with a buddy yesterday. It was awesome.

All right! That's what I'm talking about baby! Tied for 1st place again with the Tigers. I'll admit I had my doubts when they were on that down spiral and the players were saying this wasn't the same team in years past. I love the team and they have been fun to watch as of late. It's also great to have Perez back in the closer role.

It really is amazing when you look at the long losing streak this team had ...... only to rebound really strongly.

I do wish that we had a better showing against the AL East, but we can work on that. Plus, we only play 4 games against the ALE over the next 2 months. (if I read the schedule right) We do get 6 against Baltimore and the Yankees in September, so we better get things together by then so we don't let them knock us out of playoff contention.

If we can avoid any more really bad streaks like we had, I think they are right there until the end.

I think that's where the need for another starter comes in. Another good arm is just one more guy who can be a stopper.

Would really like to see the Tribe finish strong going into the break. Can't wait for next weekend.

I would love to see us grab a Dave Burba type ..... a guy who really knows how to pitch, and who could be a strong veteran influence on the pitching staff. I don't know who is available in that mold though.

Chris Capuano is the one I want. Should not cost a lot in terms of compensation, is a vet LHP, can both start and pitch from the bullpen. Unspectacular but solid

Nice to be back in 1st.

Let's hope we keep this streak going on. That schedule does look rather favorable. (as you said)

Tigers have a pretty cush schedule as well. I started when you did on Sept 6. Before that they have a 3 game series with the BoSox. Before that a 3 game series vs us.

Fri, Sep 6 Kansas City Royals @ Kansas City 0 - 0
Sat, Sep 7 Kansas City Royals @ Kansas City 0 - 0
Sun, Sep 8 Kansas City Royals @ Kansas City 0 - 0
Mon, Sep 9 Chicago White Sox @ Chi White Sox 0 - 0
Tue, Sep 10 Chicago White Sox @ Chi White Sox 0 - 0
Wed, Sep 11 Chicago White Sox @ Chi White Sox 0 - 0
Fri, Sep 13 Kansas City Royals vs Kansas City 0 - 0
Sat, Sep 14 Kansas City Royals vs Kansas City 0 - 0
Sun, Sep 15 Kansas City Royals vs Kansas City 0 - 0
Mon, Sep 16 Seattle Mariners vs Seattle 0 - 0
Tue, Sep 17 Seattle Mariners vs Seattle 0 - 0
Wed, Sep 18 Seattle Mariners vs Seattle 0 - 0
Thu, Sep 19 Seattle Mariners vs Seattle 0 - 0
Fri, Sep 20 Chicago White Sox vs Chi White Sox 0 - 0
Sat, Sep 21 Chicago White Sox vs Chi White Sox 0 - 0
Sun, Sep 22 Chicago White Sox vs Chi White Sox 0 - 0
Mon, Sep 23 Minnesota Twins @ Minnesota 0 - 0
Tue, Sep 24 Minnesota Twins @ Minnesota 0 - 0
Wed, Sep 25 Minnesota Twins @ Minnesota 0 - 0
Fri, Sep 27 Miami Marlins @ Miami 0 - 0
Sat, Sep 28 Miami Marlins @ Miami 0 - 0
Sun, Sep 29 Miami Marlins @ Miami

If on a hot streak the Tigers could go 22-0

I really wouldn't want to be the team behind come September.

Btw. I almost forgot that they played baseball in September. Football season drowns the rest out for me.

Good guys dropped one last night. Once again, we only got 5 innings out of Kazmir. I know he's coming off a bout of back spasms, but between him and Jimenez, we're going to burn out the bullpen. But even with the loss, Indians have a chance to go for an 8-3 road trip, which is very encouraging. Today (2:10 PM), its Jimenez vs Shields. I'd like to see Francona give Ubaldo a chance to pitch through his 6th inning blues. Expand that 100 pitch limit to 120 or so. I understand the pitch count with Kazmir, but the rest of these guys should be giving us 7 innings per outing.

I think Francona had a quick hook with Kaz last night. He was only at 87 pitches. Yes, he'd given up two hits to start the 6th, but they were both bloop/fluke hits. I've got more confidence in Kaz in that situation than I do the pen, quite honestly.

Well, Tito left Jimenez in today in the 6th with a 5-0 lead, and he proceeded to give up 2 walks, an error on his part at 1st base to load the bases, and then a Grand Slam. Allen came out of the bullpen to give up a tying HR. Then the Indians took a 7-5 lead in the 7th which Joe Smith gave up right away. Then the Royals won it by going to town on Bryan Shaw. Ubaldo holds true to form and the bullpen IS imploding. Bad loss today, just when you were thinking there might be some fans down there this weekend. Annoying.

If losing the final game of a 7-4 road trip causes anybody to stay away tonight, they aren't a fan regardless.

There is nothing more annoying that what we saw yesterday. Pitchers beating themselves by not getting the ball over the plate.

Tito and his coaches can only help ya so much. That was flat out embarrassing.
