I'm just glad that there are nerds (meant in a positive way) like you guys that can argue about this stuff. I started reading this thread to find out 'useful' info then it turned in to nerd lingo battle of teraflops, gigarams, and geekcircuits... For all most of us know you guys could be making it all up just to sound smart. Thankfully there are teranerds (again in the most positive sense of the word) such as yourselves that understand this mumbo jumbo.
Now how do set the time on the VCR again...?

sorry Portland  Just wanted to offer my 2 cents, but thats why I put in the bottom line comment so people would know. Also just because the ps4 may have more graphics horsepower, that will only show up in ps4 exclusives. You go lowest common denominator when going multi-platform.

Yeah no doubt, gotta wait for those flash sales though. I jumped the gun yesterday and bought Civ 5 and XCOM enemy unknown at 50% off. Today they went on flash sales at 75% off. Doh, lesson learned.

You may be right that I am overstating Memory Latency gage, I'll concede that to you. GDDR5 does make sense for games...I was under the impression though that the PS4 is also going to foster an app market...I was merely stating from a cost perspective that DDR3 is cheaper and more readily available. From a design perspective MS one up Sony with the ESRAM, because as long as its used as a buffer, the differences in performance should be minimal. Of course the PS4 has a more powerful GPU this time around though. As for the CPU, Jaguar is the next generation Bobcat CPU. It is a low power chip meant for netbooks and low power devices. MS and Sony both are banking on using 8 weaker cpu cores in lieu of 4 stronger ones. To put things in perspective, AMD FX Bulldozer Code Named Zambezi that came out in late 2010 was about 7-10% slower then Phenom II it replaced in most tests. It was also about 15-20% slower then Sandy Bridge in Single thread IPC AMD FX Piledriver Code named Vishera (which I own, have the 8350) is about 10-15% faster then Bulldozer, which makes it trade blows with Sandy Bridge such as the 2500k AMD Bobcat was 90% as fast as AMD K8 at similar clock speeds...for a low power chip that is great, for a gaming CPU its not so great.... http://www.anandtech.com/show/4023/the-brazos-performance-preview-amd-e350-benchmarked/3According to AMD Jaguar is "supposed" to improve on Bobcat by 22%...that's pretty lofty...has it happned? maybe...im betting we will see in the real world more like 9-12% So those numbers put in below the Conroe/Wolfdale in IPC per core...I know Jaguar has more cores then Conroe....I am just saying each core of the Jaguar is weaker then an equivalent Conroe/Wolfdale Core per clock...remember Bobcat is only 90% of AMD K8, Conroe/Wolfdale was faster then K8..... http://www.anandtech.com/show/6976/amds-...kabini-temash/5I agree the branch prediction, and the addition of x86 instruction sets such as SSE 1-4, etc will definitely be a big help. However, its not the end of the world...smart developers like yourself will find a way to get the most out of the hardware. By the way, the Rhyse game your working on looks phenominal! and I did buy both Darksiders games, You did excellent on them as well. Im more of a hardware network admin kinda guy, I don't do much coding, so I will concede you have more experience in game coding then I do. I may have flawed thinking wanting consoles to have powerful PC components....regardless, thanks for all the great games you have worked on the last few years...I really hope there is a Darksiders 3 and you get to be part of it again!

Every time someone mentions X86 it brings up not so good to good memories about when I had to program in that stuff for a computer science class. The stuff is cryptic as hell and it takes long lines of code to get things done (although call me crazy I might prefer it to C). However, it is nice that they're going with such a common known architecture that's known by many.

For amd vs. intel I totally agree with you. I used to be a big AMD fanboy but they haven't topped the Core i7 architecture yet... The engineer who developed the original Athlon is back after a stint with Apple so I'm hopeful But AMD chips are much cheaper to box into a console, so I totally see why sony and MS did that. You bet developers would love a Core i7 3960X and 32GB of RAM attached to an Nvidia Titan but then you'd have a very expensive machine. Also remember, we dont have things like Operating System overhead or Drivers when making console games, working right on the metal has several speed advantages associated with it.
Most game programmers will trade per-core performance for core count. Especially general purposes cores. The PS3 was very specialized with its cores, the xbox was GP cores which was easier to deal with

Well no one programs x86 asm these days so that is a plus. What you do if you want to do something like SIMD instructions or atomic arithmetic is you use intrinsics. To the programmer it's a C function call but the compiler will convert it to the appropriate assembly calls without the typical function call overhead.
That said, you still debug x86 asm if you have bad bugs like memory corruption/blow stacks. So I try to encourage other game programmers to at least know the basics of it. And what you said about a common arch is a HUGE boon to us. No more worries about endianess or other wonky stuff.
Also since you mentioned asm, a website that takes C code and prints out the asm!

Hey I just found out that State of Decay game is Xbox Live only, but they are currently working on a PC version that will be released via Steam before the year is over.
1. Will that be a good port over to PC
2. For someone that doesn't do a lot of PC gaming, will that be OK for me to play?
The more I read about the game, the more I want to play it.

PC ports are hit or miss, I play alot on PC but I read reviews for the pc version of games specifically before committing. That said I will probably buy it on PC anyway, it looks cool

I still have both my pre-orders for the PS4 and XBox One but have decided to go with the PS4. I think I may still keep the XBox One though and sell it on eBay. Need to check and see how much those are going for to see if it's worth it.

I think the first party studios really pushed me over (Naughty Dog especially). I am thinking Killzone will be my launch game...any of you guys going to get it?
Also I have 0 friends on Playstation (I always played multiplayer on 360) so if you guys wants to add me please do it's Av1at0rs. I will probably pick up a X1 when Halo drops (I'm a sucker for Halo and have played them all).

I'm getting Killzone Shadow Falls for sure. I never played KZ1 on the PS2, but I beat KZ2 & 3. Shadow Falls looks pretty good.
I have enough money for a Vita, I want one strictly for the remote play (since I can't play right now until the kids/wife go to sleep). But I'm holding out to see if they drop in price again soon or maybe a better bundle now. I already have the walking dead game so a portable copy doesn't interest me.

I plan on picking up a Vita as well for the remote play. i have a Wii U and love the remote play option. It's great for when the wife wants to watch one of her shows.

I wanted to pre-order a PS4 just to sell on eBay near X-mas, but I chickened out. Now with them all being sold out everywhere, looks like I didn't make the right decision. But even then, how much profit can you expect to make?
I'd probably talk myself into keeping it anyway. 
I can't remember the exact amount of time, but I think I waited two years after launch to buy my PS3. The game library needs to build up in my opinion. All the first generation games seem like straight ports of the PS3 versions.
I just bought Skate 3 for the PS3 this week. $20. I played it for 2 hours last night, fun game. There's still a lot of gaming to be done on the PS3 (GTA V, COD Ghosts, Battlefield 4, NHL 14, FIFA 14/World Cup 15, etc.).

I keep thinking I want a console, but then I think if I'm going to be in front of the TV rather than my computer, I'm probably going to watch something rather than play something.
But I still have the urge to get a console.

In that case, I'd suggest buying a Xbox 360 or PS3. You can get a decently priced new or used one once the One and PS4 come out. A lot of the games you can buy will be relatively cheap and there are TONS of them.
It's not just games, you can surf the net, watch DVDs and Bluerays, listen to music, buy movies or TV shows through Amazon, and get a Netflix subscription for your PS3.
If you don't like it, you can sell it all back.

I think the vita/remote play is cool, I own a PSP, which, I put FFVIII on, but I would prefer to put that money towards an X1. As a single guy living by myself I don't have those concerns, but fully appreciate them.
An update target is suppose to do a buy 2 launch games get 1 free promotion this Sunday, so keep your eyes out (also heard Amazon might match). I'm think ACIV, Killzone, and Battlefield or NBA2k.
To Gage I will say the Rome is the most appealing of the X1's launch games there is. I don't mind QTE as much as most people, but that first trailer made it look like Heavy Rain x5 (I did enjoy Heavy Rain). I'm glad to hear that is more Arkham City than QTE heaven. Besides Darksiders was there any other games you worked on last gen?

I'm with you on this one, Punch. My 360 is starting to struggle a little (some freezing, and it's getting more frequent. If it does kick the bucket, I'm probably just going to buy the new sleeker version of the 360. I think it's only 200 or 250 bucks. I don't see the point of spending double that for better graphics, Skype, and a few more nice gimmicks. When game studios start leaving the 360 behind, I'll think about switching.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

I saw this earlier this week. I was planning on getting NBA2K14 and Battlefield 4 anyways. I'll keep my reserve just in case and check Target. If I can get them from Target with a free game I will just cancel my pre-order or return them.
Just need to decide which free game I want now.

I got mine through bestbuy, it left Maumee Ohio at 5am and says it will deliver by the end if the day today. I wasn't waiting in line.

Actually I was just able to place an order through K-mart for one. My order status is in "processing", but i'll save my nerd'gasm (lol) for when it's labeled and marked as shipped. I've bought big ticket things before and placed the order, paid for it only for it to be cancelled.
So, excited but still skeptical. Wish me luck guys, I am looking forward to playing some Assassins Creed Black Flag!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a friend post on FB that she waited in line for hours to get her son a new x-box for Christmas... only to realize that she was standing in line for a PS4 and the new x-box comes out next week  Her hubby told her the wrong date

May be bad of me, but I found that incredibly funny! Man I would be so mad! I saw the lines at BestBuy, I couldn't imagine standing in one for a long ass time and I WANTED a PS4, and bad too! Wow I had been so mad!
Good news guys! My order is shipped as should arrive Tuesday of next week! I'll be PS4'in with ya'll who got one!

This just reaks of sloppyness, this could be a huge PR blow for Sony, no one wants to buy something that has a history of being broken or unreliable....and the PS4 is getting that monikor already. The only thing that keeps Xbox 360 in first place last gen was Micrsoft offered a 3 year warranty on consoles that had Red Ring...Microsoft built a lot of goodwill with gamers by extending that 1 year warranty to 3 years on those consoles....I doubt Sony would ever do anything like that...they never have in their company history...Microsoft, as much as I think they are a monopoly, does seem to care about their customers. If you on the fence about a console.....WAIT for another 6 months to a year. Valve is going to be releasing the SteamBox very soon...you will have access to Steam's cheap game prices (15-20 dollar cheaper per game then the Sony/Microsoft Console, awesome Steam sales) all in your living room TV keep an eye on this website http://store.steampowered.com/livingroom/SteamMachines/its coming and soon....if i dind't have a gaming PC, and i was in the market for a console, thats the one I would probably buy.....you just can't beat Steam's games prices....you just can't beat it....
