If you've been wondering something to the effect of "I've been noticing that Heldawg has been gracing us with his insightful and witty prose more often than normal", then you are quite the observationalist!

About six weeks ago or so I threw my back out cutting down banana trees in my yard (they're much heavier than they look!). And I herniated a couple discs in my lower back, one that requires surgery, a procedure called a microdiscectomy.

So hopefully everything goes well and I'm back to normal soon...and posting here less!

I'll be recuperating at home for 2-3 weeks then according to the neurosurgeon I'll be near 100% in four months.

Maybe this is the excuse I've needed to watch as much football as I please this season!

Aloha

Good luck. I hope it works for you.

I know what a bad back can be like.

You know you're supposed to eat the banana's before cutting down the tree, right?

Good luck with the surgery, you'll love the heated blanket.

Good luck. Easy surgery I wanted to walk a few hours after surgery I felt so much better. I had a discectomy in November. My back is better than it has been in a couple years. I'm made a couple lifestyle changes and down 50lbs and in the best shape since high school. My surgeon told me I could do anything after surgery as before. Not quite true lol. Squats, and rdl's are out.

Also if you think your backs good to go give it a few more weeks. I tried playing basketball in January and thought I reherniated my disc for a week. Any questions feel free to p.m me or ask here.

Awesome. Now that's the kind of news I want to hear!

I'm going to take it easy because I had a lower back issue 9 years ago and never want to have an issue again. The doc said no more twisting and lifting. But just about anything else is good.

As long as I can swim, run and play some golf I'll be very happy.

And thank you everyone for the well wishes. I'm staring at the Advance Health Care Directives sheet about prolonging life, artificial nutrition etc. and it's kind of making my stomach turn.

Great to hear about your successful surgery though and I can't wait for the sciatica and hip pain to be gone.

Also I'd love to lose 30 and get back under 200. It could only help matters.

Yea definitely recommend taking it easy and building back up. The only time I had issues was squats and rdl's. I have been doing Yoga, MMA training, running, zumba with the wife, more than I did before.

Listen to the doc and you should be good to go.

Held...sorry to hear of your lumberjack experience with the banana tree but hopefully all will go as described by your doctor.

The advice about taking it easy, using a go slow approach is probably the best advice given....because it is possible to "reherniate" the disc that is now herniated...a subject doctors may not feel comfortable discussing.

...good luck...woof !

I have heard that walking in sand isn't good. It puts undo stress on the back, so maybe golf is out of the picture.

I had laminectomy-discectomy surgery 2 years ago and it changed my life over night.

I was a shuffling old man for about 6 months and the day after my wife comes in and says, "You're standing up straight!".

I injured some muscle that goes from the lower back-to the hip-and wraps around the quad last year and thought I needed hip surgery.

I was glad to find out it was just muscle strain from trying to get back in shape too fast. They did ultra-sound on it and I'm pain free and exercising more aerobically than with weight resistance which caused the strain.

So when they tell you to take it easy, take it easy.

When I had mine done, my back didn't hurt any more than it did going in. Unfortunately, it didn't hurt any less either.

The only thing that has ever knocked the pain in my back down at all has been Toradol. One shot of that and I realized that I had a hernia, because the pain in my back went down, and I could feel the pain in my gut. lol Talk about your mixed blessings. Unfortunately, I can only have 2 or so shots per year, and they only last a few weeks ....... and they are really not good for a person. (How NFL players take multiple shots per month is beyond me .. it's really bad for the human body with overuse. None of my doctors will allow more than 2 shots per year for concern of kidney and other damage)

I am glad that your procedure worked. I know that it does for some people. Hopefully you're back on your feet and 100% in no time.

Thanks for all the well wishes. They paid off!

I feel like someone hit me with an axe. That's the negative. But man the radiating pain that I had in my hip, down the front of my shin and in my leg is completely gone. And that's a blessing for sure.

For anyone who is considering this surgery I'd highly recommend it. I have to say I'm kind of a control freak and when the wheeled me into the operating room I was pretty anxious. Pretty soon the medicine that they put into my hand started to make me dizzy, I did 4 deep breaths, and I was out and laying there like a fish. But I made it through and woke up in a recovery room.

Now, I feel really stiff. And they've had me double up on the pain meds for the next few days. But I'm really happy that I did it and that it's behind me. I know that I'll be back and running around soon enough.

I'll have to put the Marecic showdown on the backburner.

for now.....

Thanks again! Aloha!

It's a month from the date of the surgery until I can submerge in water. And trust me I cannot wait to get in and get swimming.

I'm chomping at the bit and will never forget this setback. This is the first time that my health was really taken from me.

I'm never going to take my health for granted again and I'm determined to get back into optimum shape. I'm angry. Probably for the first time really angry with myself in 13 years. And I'm going to channel this in a very positive way to get there starting right now.
