Hardesty's thumb not broken. That's great news for him, as long as other tests don't show a ligament tear, or other damage. Hopefully he's OK. I really want to see him get a real shot to make the team, if for no other reason than I want the very best players on this team, and if he's one of the best, then I want him to be able to show it. Cleveland Browns RB Montario Hardesty's thumb not broken, team awaiting more info | cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ss..._special-reportCLEVELAND, Ohio -- X-rays on Browns running back Montario Hardesty's right thumb were negative, meaning it's not broken, a league source said today. But the Browns are still awaiting more information today to determine the nature and extent of the injury. Hardesty will most likely sit out Thursday night's second preseason game against the Lions, but the hope is that he'll be back in time for the third preseason tuneup Aug. 24th in Indianapolis. The third contest will be treated like a dress rehearsal for the regular season, with starters playing into the third quarter. Hardesty, who had just returned to team drills on Monday, has missed all or parts of 10 of the 15 training camp practices with a hamstring tendon injury and the thumb. The Browns view him as a talented runner and would like to have him on the roster, but he needs to get on the field to prove he deserves a roster spot. The Browns actually have a surplus of good running backs this season with a group that includes Dion Lewis, Brandon Jackon and Chris Ogbonnaya behind starter Trent Richardson. Hardesty headed into camp as the No. 2 back, but has since fallen behind Lewis for that role because of the injuries. He suffered the thumb injury Monday when a direct snap sailed over his head and he leaped to grab it. The ball smacked his thumb and he came down in pain.

Remember when people tried to argue that Hardesty wasn't injury-prone?

Never said he did not have broken ribs. Are you really taking mac at his word? Really?
My point was that he ran the same before the injury as after the injury. He didn't use it as an excuse, but all of his apolgists do. I just don't think the injury effected his performance. He ran the same way all year.
Let me guess, I don't know the RB position, either?

Sometimes, a sprain can be way worse than a broken bone. I took a charge when I was a sophomore in BB practice, bent the thumb all the way back. Wasn't broken. But, I had to shoot left handed the entire year. It just would not heal.

I'd love to tell my story about a broken thumb and football.........and then later, my 2 sprained thumbs. But I won't.
He needs to man up and play. This doesn't sound like an injury, it sounds like a hurt. There's a difference.

Summer before 7th grade - playing volleyball - broke my thumb. Now, you have to know how my dad was. CEO of a hospital........and us kids just didn't go to a doctor unless a bone was sticking out. (in fact, my sister was born 7 minutes after mom arrived at the hospital......but that's a different story).
Sr in high school. I played tight end/split end. In pre-season practice, I sprained both thumbs. Bent back.........pain was bad. Our trainer taped me up for practices and games.........Imagine putting your hand down on a table, spread out to a "normal" spread. That's where he taped my thumbs - actually, just a bit less than normal spread........ and my thumbs got taped to my first two fingers......pointer and flip off fingers.
Looked like I had webbed thumbs, on both hands. Still had some pain, but I was able to block and catch, no problem. No problem at all. I was all state as a sr. (that's my little brag moment, even if it wasn't first team all-state)

No. My mom was a teacher, so, until I could drive, I rode to school with her.

Cool story, but are you saying that the broken thumb took longer to heal and prohibited you from playing?

Not at all. The break healed much quicker than the sprains.
What I AM saying is neither one kept me from playing. And before any jack wads say anything........yes, I was playing jr. high football with the break, and high school football with the sprains.......not nfl, not college. (but, if a tiddly widdle 7th grader can play with a broken thumb..........and if a h.s. sr. can play with 2 sprained thumbs, being a receiver..........well, you do the math.)

Okay............gotcha. That was my experience too. Sprains can linger and linger and linger. They can also be harder to protect.
LOL............now some Sports Medicine guy will come on here and tell me I am full of crap. It was just my experience. <shrug>

Again, while not a medical expert, I can only go off my experiences.
And further more.........haven't medical experts told us eggs were bad for us? Then told us they were good? Didn't medicine tell us alar was fine.......then tell us it was bad? And coffee......so long decried as bad, but now it's okay, maybe even good in protecting the liver, preventing alzheimers as well I believe. (or maybe it's some other disease) Nicotine is terrible......but it helps prevent some disease.
Go to the doctor every year we're told. They'll find things early.........then we're told "we're over prognosing many cancers causing more harm than good due to stress and treatments.
Get it early, we're told. A friend of mine just died from pancreatic cancer that "they found very early". She lived about 5 months from diagnosis. Doctors and hospitals made money though.. My aunts breast cancer was found very early. She's not doing well..........after 4 months.
Medical experts, in my opinion, are much like draft experts. They don't know. They can have all the info and still be wrong half the time, if not more.
My brother, at his yearly physical.........blood tests..........was told they thought he had cancer. After many sleepless nights, and more tests, and more money.........it was "Oh, guess we were wrong. Sorry about that."

Wow. Pretty deep. I hear you, bro..........but, we might want to get back to football in this forum. Start a thread about it. My wife is an Anesthetist. She tells me some good stories about docs. Like anything else.........there are good and bad. Darn it. I just did it, too. Hey, who looked good at camp today? And did TRich, Nelson, Ward, or Hardesty get hurt walking up the stairs? You know, I am wondering if I just make: "I am channeling my Inner-Bernie" my sig, if I can be real sarcastic and negative on every post? Sorry guys, a little too much vino tonight.

vers...for the record, you said...
"The ribs will be brought up again. I am a bit skeptical of that story. Broken ribs are serious. Like someone else said, it hurts to laugh. Sneezing is a killer. TRich certainly wasn't ineffective because he was AVOIDING contact. In fact, he SOUGHT out contact. That doesn't jibe w/broken ribs."
Vers, then you clarified the comment above, saying...
"Not sure why you felt the need to point that out twice. I was clear the first time. I have my doubts about the "broken ribs" thing. "
I try not to play games with the English language and in this case there are only two possible answers to the question...either Richardson suffered broken ribs and played with them most of the season...OR Richardson did not break his ribs. There is no in between answer...
I happen to believe Richardson... that he did have broken ribs and played through the pain.
Vers...you, on the other hand, choose to believe that Richardson did not have broken ribs and was not playing with broken ribs.
...which basically means you are calling Richardson a liar.

mac, mac, mac...no need to post this. We don't have access to the information, so all is speculation. This is counter-productive...

Third option: He had a rib cartilage injury as was reported I doubt his injury was the cause of his line hesitation, and didn't seem to impact his elusiveness in the open field or ability to absorb contact. But it does sound like he was very tough. I don't think he made up the stories about having to sleep sitting up or needing help putting his clothes on. Proud of T Rich. Hope he continues to develop, he is currently excellent once he is in the open field (and has good hands, a great receiving combo).
