If I was King's employer, I'd have nothing to say, really. He asked on Twitter if Bernie was drunk, and personally, I'm kind of wondering myself. It's a valid question.

Maybe he doesnt know bernie or his story, but if he does, to me that seemed like a cheap shot. The reason bernie sounds drunk is because his brain is similar to some one who is drunk. Drinking alcohol "numbs" the frontal lobe, which is responsible for a persons ability to "hold back" what they are saying, its essentially their filter. Thats why people love drinking when they are single and trying to talk to girls. Its also noticeable when it deteriorates in old people, which happens early on (in relation to other parts of the brain), in elderly. Thats why old people say the worst stuff, lol.

But yeah, frontal lobe damage from concussions has caused bernie to not have that same filter, it also makes him struggle to stay focused, among other things. He has that brain damage due to his commitment to winning football games for this city, and to me its offensive to take a jab at the guy and ask if he's been drinking due to him saying some stuff that is a direct result of him suffering brain damage for this city. Especially when he did have a problem with drinking (as a result of the depression also related to multiple concussions, which has lead a greater number of football players to commit suicide).

to me, that is more offensive than pointing out some receivers, whos job is to CATCH A FOOTBALL, not being able to catch. They WERE horrible. And when asked "what if their parents are watching" and he replied "id be embarrassed" i assumed he just meant that he would be embarrassed for saying that stuff. maybe thats what he meant, maybe not. either way i dont care, the dude is a COLOR COMMENTATOR.

A color commentator (color analyst, analyst) is a sports commentator who assists the play-by-play announcer, often by filling in any time when play is not in progress. The color analyst and main commentator will often exchange comments freely throughout the broadcast, when the play-by-play announcer is not describing the action. The color commentator provides expert analysis and background information, such as statistics, strategy and injury reports on the teams and athletes, and occasionally anecdotes or light humor. Color commentators are often former athletes or coaches of the sport being broadcast.

was he "out of line?" sure. but i didnt think it was that bad. i think its refreshing to have a guy who says whats honestly on his mind, even if its a little offensive, some of the time. Im so sick of this politically correct pussification of everything in the mass media. i turn on football to watch a violent, in your face, mans sport. this isnt figure skating for christs sake.

For the record, Peter King never insisted Bernie was drunk, he was tweeting out a question that someone had sent him. That person asked if he was. I've heard a lot of people saying that King said it, he didn't.

Peter King comments on other people's @ messages ass backwards.

I still think it's not that big of a deal. The Kellen Clemons remark was funny. The remark about people's parents being ashamed was tongue in cheek. Do people honestly believe that Bernie REALLY thinks Tavon Austin's parents should be ashamed at his play in a meaningless preseason game?

I mean whatever, people in the national media take pot shots at the Browns and Cleveland ALL THE TIME, but I guess that's ok, right?

Also, I guarantee this season King tweets or puts something in MMQB that takes a shot at Cleveland just so he can get the response he's looking for.

If you don't follow Peter King, he loves to retweet people who say horrible things about him. Most in the media just ignore that kind of stuff and retweet good football stuff/questions. Not King, he loves to feed the trolls.

Thanks for clearing that up. I thought King had asked If Kosar was drunk. I take back what I said about King in an earlier post.

Like I said, the way he answers tweets is done in a way that confuses people. He puts no barrier between their tweet and his response. When I tweet back at people I put my answer first then the RT. That's how it should be that way things don't get mixed up.

A Browns beat reporter made the same mistake thinking King had said that.

I'm not convinced that Peter King was just retweeting. If you take him at his own word, it sounds rather definitive that King actually did ask if Kosar was drunk. Here's his recent comments:

"Kosar’s a good guy, and I have always liked him. But I found the comments pretty far over the top and asked rhetorically, on Twitter, whether Kosar had been drinking. Which brought on a raft of criticism from the Twitterverse, saying I’d gone over the top. I don’t think I was over the top, but many of you felt I’d gone too far given the sea of trouble Kosar has had in his personal life. (None of which, from what I can tell, involve treatment for alcohol, or any admission of alcoholism.) My point was, I think there’s a way to be critical of players and teams, and analysts should definitely do that. But Kosar went too far, in my opinion. And not just mine. Kosar called Rams coach Jeff Fisher Sunday to apologize, and Browns CEO Joe Banner said Sunday the Browns "don’t condone the personal and unprofessional approach" Kosar used."

From where I'm sitting it's a classic case of one guy making idiotic comments followed by another guy making knee-jerk, idiotic reactionary comments.

Two wrongs don't make a right.

I've historically been very critical of the "great" Jim Brown and the backlash often comes due to his work with gangster-kids and his football career. That doesn't stop him from being a loud-mouthed embarrassment to the organization. Growing up, Kosar was my favorite player and there wasn't an actual close second. I loved the idea of the slow-footed, goofy, mechanically awkward, and anything but prototypical Kosar succeeding. But as a middle-aged adult, Kosar has become an embarrassment to the organization with things that are both in and out of his control.

If Kosar is otherwise unable to control himself due to the brain-damage from his playing days blame falls on the organization for putting him out there. However, it's very hard for me to accept the excuse...and to a large degree it is an excuse...that he's mentally damaged and unable to control himself and therefore a large amount of understanding should be used when evaluating Kosar's comments.

Kosar made some extremely unprofessional comments and he should have apologized for them. He gets a stay of execution because of who he is, not because of his abilities as a commentator. Were he and Jim not the two most popular Browns players of all time they wouldn't have sniffed the jobs they have, and that status doesn't give them a pass for the things they say and the actions they make.

Peter King has now dug his own hole for asking if Kosar was drunk. I can actually understand Jeff Fisher's comments because he has to defend his team and doesn't specifically question Kosar's sobriety on-set. King elected to sit on the Kosar's comments and come in well-after they were said, then specifically questions whether Kosar was trashed.

There are no winners here, only losers. Kosar and King saw to that.

This should also serve as a wake-up call to anyone that thinks Kosar should serve in some capacity with the organization. Whether it's the alcohol, drugs, brain damage or just a case of a guy who can't control what he says, there isn't any place for Kosar the man as a true shot-caller within the organization. Sure, his mind was razor-sharp as a player and when it comes to X's and O's there might not be anyone better, but he's unpredictable and shows terrible judgement. They may find a place for him as a mouth-piece or a sympathetic figure to play on the fans' hearts and loyalties, but beyond that? He's shown he's not capable of handling anything serious. It breaks my football heart to say it.

Wow, I can't believe that. If you look at the tweet, the drinking comment clearly comes from the reader's question.

Not that I think that's a big deal either. I think people are wound way too tight nowadays.

Everyone wants to say the right thing because of backlash that comes from the media. The media in turn does the same.

Me? I kinda like people's true feelings coming out. Don't sugar coat it for me.

I actually saw some footage of old football players back in the day talking before games about how they were going to win and do this and do that, and it's kinda nice. Everyone now is terrified to go out on that ledge because it comes back to them. They're all afraid of "bulletin board material".

I was watching the replay of the '88 Bird/Dominique duel from the playoffs. Larry Bird flat out said that because Atlanta blew game 6 that there was zero chance they were winning game 7 in Boston. He went out and dropped 20 points in the 4th quarter to win the series. Balls.

There are no more Joe Namath's and Rasheed Wallaces any more.

I never read that as a reader's question. I thought that was pure King, and as it turns out, it was.

Of course, some will excuse King's comment while continuing to pillory Kosar.

Hm.. the classic "There is no more X anymore" statement. Symptomatic of old-timers' disease. LOL. Players still make statements like that. It took a lot of balls for Eli Manning to say he was an elite QB, and he proved it. What about all of Rex Ryan's claims? The claim itself is less important than actually doing it. I'm sure plenty of boasts and guarantees from decades ago were proven false on the field.

What I'm wondering is if context means anything to the Bernie supporters. Do you think there is a difference between what a player says about another player, and what a commentator for an NFL sanctioned pre-season game says about a player? Keep in mind, we are talking about insults here, not criticism. There's a difference.

Additionally, for all of you people who just hate the supposed political correctness that's involved with this story, let me ask you.... Do you always say what you are thinking regardless of the context? And if not, what would you call this restraint you are exercising?

Fisher could just as easily have said something like, " I heard Bernie's comments and I wholeheartedly disagree with his opinion".

Bernie could've just as easily acted like a professional and not some drunk fan.

Quote:

Then he calls Banner and bitches. But he chose to throw out, "Well, we know Bernie has had issues". If you don't think that was just as personal a jab as Bernie made then I don't know what you would consider a personal insult.

Again, I think he was completely warranted in making that statement.

And, again, if he really wanted to 'bitch', as you say, he could've probably had Kosar fired, or at least booted from the booth. A phone call or two to the league office and/or WKYC's sports department, and most likely it's bye, bye, Bernie.

As far as King goes if you think asking if a guy is drunk isn't meant as a personal assault, well again, I cannot help you.

I'm still wondering whether or not Kosar was drunk or on something.

Do you consider that a personal assault against Kosar on my part?

Just commenting:

I'm just going to post the 1st couple of tweets listed in the article, because they were from LeCharles Bentley, and Pete Prisco. (who I generally consider one of the more fair national writers)

Fans and media react to Bernie Kosar's comments on the Rams and being reprimanded by Joe Banner | cleveland.com
http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ss...t_flyout_sports

Fans of Bernie Kosar in Cleveland and from around the world came to the defense of the former Cleveland Browns' quarterback after he made harsh comments about the St. Louis Rams Thursday night.

Rams head coach Jeff Fisher stated he lost a lot of respect for Kosar after hearing the comments following the Browns' 27-19 win over the Rams.

"I'm just surprised that Bernie has such a lack of respect for players and this game. To be honest with you, I lost a lot of respect for him. It's highly unlikely he knew anything about our football team, but felt the need to make those comments. I don't think they were justified."

Browns CEO Joe Banner then reprimanded Kosar for his "personal and unprofessional approach'' during the broadcast, but he is keeping Kosar on the remaining three preseason games.

“We don't condone the personal and unprofessional approach that Bernie took with some of his comments during the broadcast Thursday night. We’ve spoken to Bernie, he understands that, and we would expect the situation is resolved moving forward. We’ve also reached out to the Rams organization and have shared those same sentiments."

Below are some of the best tweets about the situation and if Kosar should have been reprimanded for his comments.

I think the whole Bernie was out of line conversation is a much UN-needed distraction. I hear opinionated discussion of players like this all the time on ESPN and NFL Network...

It seems the Black commentators on those channels can say whatever they want and get away with it. (I know this will seem like a racist statement to some but it's really not meant that way at all.)

Bernie should not have gone there, but he is not the Browns... He IS however a Browns legend and as fans we have the right to want or not want him involved with the team. I feel he usually just tells it like it is...

Here's the thing,, if Jim Rome says it, NOTHING is said about it.. NOTHING.. he's does stuff like this all the time. Then his clones continue it along and nobody says a word.

Bernie says it and you'd think the world was ending.

Look, Bernie probably should have found a better way of putting it, but he wasn't lying, he was telling the truth. He didn't make it up. Those receivers and Clemons were pretty bad Thursday night.. No getting round it.

Jim Rome isn't calling a game. He's a talk show host.

This is a ridiculous comparison.

If Rome had a chance to call a game, and handled it like he does his talk show, he'd be fired in a heartbeat.

No, he shouldn't.

I don't think that's an excuse here though. If they tell Bernie he's gotta stop with that stuff, he will, end of story. I don't think his concussion issues have anything to do with it. I just don't think he's a trained broadcaster like Herbstreit or Simms are for football. There's a reason those guys are at the top of their sport and Bernie just does Browns local broadcasts.

I'm not sure, but he didn't major in communications at Miami, right?

PDR, I don't think that at all. I know you winked and that is exactly the response I was trying to avoid. BUT I know you've seen Deion Sanders, Warren Sapp and many others rag like hell on players, coaches and refs and NEVER be called on it.

And I know there are a lot of white guys who do the same thing, but these guys came to mind the fastest for me. Sometimes it's entertaining and at other times it's annoying.

That's all well and good, but your comparison makes absolutely no sense.

An equivalent comparison would be if a nightly news commentator made some inflammatory comments about the president during a story and someone chimed in with 'Well, Sean Hannity says stuff like that all the time!'

Two completely different positions, with two completely different requirements.

I don't know if any of you guys remember this from a few years ago, but Torry Holt was the color analyst for one of our games. He was PUTRID. I'm talking about the WORST commentator I've ever heard. Plus, he was making some off the wall remarks. Yet, no one in the national media even mentioned it. I realize he probably didn't "make fun" of someone's family, but he was really bad. My point? I'd rather listen to someone like Bernie who will be brutally honest than someone who was like Torry Holt.

The root word being "brute."

[I'm getting tired of writing the same things in two different threads, so I'm going to repost what I wrote in the other one, with some modifications.]

Sad thing is, I don't think we can tell the difference anymore between "PC" and professionalism, personal restraint, common courtesy, and mannered behavior; and we certainly can't tell the difference between criticism and insult, as these two Bernie threads prove. And we can't tell the difference between honesty and brutal honesty, either. It all amounts to cultural degeneration, in my opinion.

If people want to live in a world in which everyone always says what's on their mind regardless of context, and in which no one considers the person of whom they are speaking, that's their choice, but I don't consider that a civilization -- or at least it would be a dissolute civilization.

I see this happening in many different cultural spaces. The Bernie incident is only one example. We are becoming a crass people, and we defend our crassness by claiming the alternative is political correctness. We indulge this crassness by claiming we are being "brutally honest," when really all we are doing is descending to the level of brutes. It's a sad situation we are in, and I'm writing this as a conservative.

I missed that, I was at that game. Boy what a classic, Jimmy Clausen vs. Jake Delhome. Doesn't get any better than that.

Candidly, Cleveland Browns' analyst Bernie Kosar was right: Bill Livingston | cleveland.com
http://www.cleveland.com/livingston/inde..._special-report

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Bernie Kosar is one of the Browns' most beloved former players. This is because he manipulated the NFL to come here, cherished his time as the Browns' quarterback, and always shot as straight as he dared, given his role as the team leader.

Now he's taken the gloves off for exhibition season.

Was he a trifle over the top and too personal with his comments in the exhibition opener in his criticism of the St. Louis Rams' receivers? By the Milquetoast standards of NFL broadcasts and the God-ing up of players by ESPN, yeah, he was.

Was the Browns' analyst wrong? Of course not. St. Louis' receivers have been lousy since Mike Martz left. I'll take that any day instead of the nameless, faceless cheerleaders that call games for the home team.

Thursday night, play-by-play man Jim Donovan seemed to be trying to rein in Kosar. Later, team president Joe Banner reprimanded Kosar for his remarks.

Kosar came into the league speaking his mind, ripping the Browns' offense in a narrow, come-from-ahead playoff loss to Miami in his rookie season. That led to the broadening of the passing game under offensive coordinator Lindy Infante in time for the Cinderella heartbreak season of 1986. One of the signature victories that year was at Cincinnati. Kosar wanted to be aggressive from the start.

He told me in "The Great Book of Cleveland Sports Lists," which I co-authored with radio personality Greg Brinda:

"The winner would take the division. Everybody always had scripted plays to begin the games. They were always so conservative. Get a feel for the game. Don't make mistakes. I wanted to come out firing. Infante and I almost came to blows in the locker room. I hadn't played that many big games yet, so I wanted to show everybody on the team I was ready to go."

"If you're a big, slow quarterback, you have to have other things," he continued. "I had the thing Patton said about Napoleon in the movie -- audacity, always audacity. I figured if we hit (the deep pass), it would send a big message that we were going to kick their butts. If we missed, it still meant we weren't afraid. I hit (Reggie) Langhorne deep and he got right to the goal-line."

So if you hire Kosar, you also hire a first-rate football mind, a loose tongue and what I consider refreshing candor.

"Candidly" is one of embattled Browns' owner Jimmy Haslam's favorite words. The adverb obviously does not apply to the broadcast booth under the new regime, though -- even when the barbs are directed at the other team.

Bernie as a consultant? Nah. I'm not sure he could be understood well with the way he stammers and slurs his words quite often. Maybe there is a cure for that though.

Bernie could've just as easily acted like a professional and not some drunk fan.

Sorry, but you're making it sound way worse than it actually was just to bolster you point of view.

And, again, if he really wanted to 'bitch', as you say, he could've probably had Kosar fired, or at least booted from the booth. A phone call or two to the league office and/or WKYC's sports department, and most likely it's bye, bye, Bernie.

Bernie might end up not doing telecasts next year but my gut tells me Banner wasn't anywhere near pulling the trigger on firing him now. I also think you give Fisher way too much credit for the pull he has over other teams and the way they run their FO's. Fisher's teams are usually right up there with the dirtiest teams in the league so I doubt he's garnered as much goodwill as you think he has.

I'm still wondering whether or not Kosar was drunk or on something.

Do you consider that a personal assault against Kosar on my part?

No, I'd just say you were being a contrarian to try and get a rise out of me. But if you published it as fact in a reputable news source I'd applaud Bernie when he sued your ass.

This is the first time I've ever seen this comment on a fan site/message board before.

At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.
