Browns practice notes: Rookie outside linebacker Barkevious Mingo returns to action
By Nate Ulrich Published: September 2, 2013

Browns rookie outside linebacker Barkevious Mingo returned to practice today and participated in individual drills after sitting out the past two weeks with a bruised lung.

It was the first time Mingo practiced since his unusual injury was discovered Aug. 15 during a preseason game against the Detroit Lions.

Mingo, the sixth overall pick in this year’s draft, sprinted around cones and caught passes during a pass-coverage drill. The outside linebackers did not engage in full contact during the 30-minute portion of practice open to the media.

Mingo’s status for the Browns’ regular-season opener Sunday against the visiting Miami Dolphins is unknown. Last week, ESPN reported Mingo is unlikely to play in Week 1, but he’s probable for Week 2 Sept. 15 against the Baltimore Ravens.

Mingo, a backup right outside linebacker who’s expected to receive significant playing time this season in pass-rushing situations, did not travel to either of the team’s final two exhibition games.

Medical personnel began examining Mingo on the sideline against the Lions because he said he was spitting up blood and experiencing shortness of breath. Mingo was taken to the Cleveland Clinic’s main campus before the game ended and spent two nights in the hospital.

Mingo insisted he did not suffer any broken ribs. Mingo said he believes his lung was bruised during the opening kickoff against the Lions, but neither he nor the Browns have been able to identify one specific hit as the culprit. Still, Browns coach Rob Chudzinski said last week that the diagnosis for Mingo was still a bruised lung.

Four other Browns players returned to practice today: wide receiver Davone Bess (tendinitis knee), cornerback Chris Owens (strained foot arch), starting tight end Jordan Cameron (strained groin) and starting right defensive end Desmond Bryant (back).

The only players who were absent from practice were guards Shawn Lauvao and Jason Pinkston. Both of them suffered high-ankle sprains last month and will miss the early stages of the regular season.

Great news..

Now, who was it that said he got injured without even getting hit? Well, who ever it was, you were wrong. He got hit, but they just don't know which hit did the damage.

Great and unexpected news. I don't know if he will play on Sunday, but this is a huge step towards that goal.

I'll still feel much better when he's allowed to have contact.

It's nice to know that he's back on the field but the fact he is only allowed in non-contact drills still has me concerned.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Are we sure he's not allowed to have contact yet? Maybe all the reporters saw was the individual drills.

Cleveland Browns will try out Pro Bowl kickers Dan Carpenter and Billy Cundiff Tuesday in Berea

Mary Kay Cabot, Northeast Ohio Media Group By Mary Kay Cabot, Northeast Ohio Media Group on September 02, 2013 at 12:31 PM, updated September 02, 2013 at 12:40 PM

BEREA, Ohio -- Pro Bowl kickers Billy Cundiff and Dan Carpenter will try out for the Browns job in Berea tomorrow.

There may be others too.

The Browns cut veteran Shayne Graham and rookie Brandon Bogotay, and are in need of a kicker for Sunday's opener against the Dolphins.

Carpenter, 27, has spent time with the Dolphins, Cardinals and Jets, and was released by all three teams in August.

Carpenter, a Pro Bowler in 2009, has made 127 of 155 field goal attempts for 81.9%. His longest was a 60-yarder against the Browns on Dec. 5, 2010. It was the longest field goal in Dolphins history.

Carpenter was originally signed by the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent out of Montana in 2008. He remained with the team until they released him Aug. 14. He signed with the Cardinals a week later to compete with Jay Feely, but was let go four days later after his lone field goal attempt, a 26-yarder, was blocked. He had practiced with the team only one day.

Cundiff will know his way around the Browns facility when he comes to town. He replaced an injured Phil Dawson (strained calf) in week five of the 2009 season and kicked the gamewinning field goal to help the Browns beat the Bills 6-3.

Cundiff, 33, went on to kick for the Ravens in 2010, earning Pro Bowl honors after making 26 of his 29 field goal attempts and a league-high 40 touchbacks. He also led the league with a 71.1 kickoff average.

Cundiff missed a potential gametying 32-yard field goal for the Ravens in the closing seconds of the 2012 AFC Championship game, and the Ravens lost to the Patriots, 23-20. Cundiff was released in August of 2012 and spent time with Washington and San Francisco. He also tried out with the Jets this summer but was released last week.

Overall, he's made 139 of his 184 attempts for 75.5%.

It's not yet known if the Browns will give Havard "Kickalicious'' Rugland another look. The Norwegian rookie tried out here in the spring and was recently cut by Detroit after making all three of his field goals, including a 33-yarder against the Browns.

I was kinda hoping we'd just start pooch kicking everything. I think that would make the game a lot more interesting. But I guess winning is more important than fan enjoyment.

I just think our scouts need to do a lot better. They need to stop drafting players like Mingo and Pinkston who have to sit out just because of some tiny lung injuries. I'd bet Brett Favre would play with pulmonary edema if he had it. That's who we need.

The lung isn't even that important. I'm sure these thugs could play without one.

I agree, BADdog. I will feel even better when all the groin strains can take the field again. Are we not warming up enough or properly. Seems like some more warmup is in order.

Nice! Personally, I would have called it a troll-o-meter.

pf - you have 34 posts. How many have some reference to Mingo being a punk if he doesn't play week 1?

Of the 34 on the new website, maybe three or four address Mingo.

Yeah, but it's the second time you said if he didn't start the first game, he's a punk

It didn't make any sense the first time, it won't make anymore sense if you said it a thousand times..

It was a stupid comment..

You have 10 posts since August started. 3 call Mingo a punk. 2 more address responses to those posts. Another calls little the dumbest person on the planet. 3 more predict an 11 win season and a SB victory. And the other one replies to a post mocking your punk comments.

Not really adding much worthwhile commentary to this board JMHO. And what you do offer, I can't tell if you are being facetious or if you truly believe what you type.

No, not at all.

It just annoys me that the one poster is calling Mingo a punk. It's a freaking lung injury. I was around sports a long time, but I don't know squat about lung injuries. Sounds serious to me. It's not like shaking off a dislocated finger, the flu, a sprained ankle, etc.

It just seems very irresponsible to call a guy a punk in this situation. And I would love to see Mingo swat the dude aside.

I have been a fan since 1969. I am tired of the losing and the horrendous management of the team. We need a completely new aura. Players have to be tough, and if that means suiting up when not 100%, then so be it. Honestly, I like Chud. Not a fan of Lombardi at all. I am optimistic for this year and think we can make the playoffs, unlike most on this website.

There's a difference between being tough and putting your life at risk.

Was Ray Lewis not tough because he was out with a torn triceps? He made it back for the playoffs, but he still missed 8 weeks, or so. Was he a wimp for taking time off with that injury? I mean ... it wasn't even life threatening or anything ........

Apples to oranges, you can get away with missing time with an injury and not be labeled a wimp if you've pulled off a double homicide.

What kind of street cred does Mingo have?

Exactly, what a wimp!

I honestly can't take much you say as being important. Not after the idiotic comment about Mingo being a Punk if he doesn't make it back for the first game..

That's a kid talking, or a man who hasn't grown up yet! whichever.. Dumbest comment of the year so far.
