Here is some of what the media thinks of us:

ESPN:

28
Browns
5-11

Last Week: 28 Brandon Weeden had the fifth-worst Total QBR on throws at least 15 yards downfield last year, but new offensive coordinator Norv Turner isn't shy about throwing deep.

26 I like where they are heading. It just might not happen this season. They will be competitive in a lot of games.

Yes, that was Brandon Weeden you saw making plays the other night. The soon-to-be 30-year-old went 10-for-13 Thursday night, with no less than 10 throws coming out of the 'gun. That Norv Turner is one smart football mind; the offensive coordinator routinely had Weeden in comfortable positions. Even Bernie didn't think it was horrible.

v. Miami - W... We blow them out. Everyone gets excited, playoff talks start.
@ Bal - L...We get destroyed, Everyone gets welcomed back to reality
@ Min - L...We lose, AP puts up 300
v. Cincy - W...We cant be last in the division this year
v. Buffalo (Thursday) - W...Buffalo is terrible
v. Detroit - L...Megatron gone wild
@ GB - L...Not even close
@ KC - W...
v. Bal - W...Hoping we split with them. This one is close.
@Cincy - L...Split
v. Pitt - L...Ill believe Pitt is losing it when we start to beat them on a regular basis
v. Jax - W...
@ NE - L...Brady picks apart our secondary
v. Chicago - W...Could be close, but we have more weapons
@ NYJ - W...Possibly the worst team in the league
@ Pit - W...we steal a meaningless game.

That gives us 8-8, but Im betting more like 7-9 or 6-10.

i think people are failng to see the difference between a BUILD, and a REBUILD.

we've been last in our division and havent won more than 5 games in a few years. that should tell you we are going to be replacing some starters whether we change coaches, FO, or schemes.

But to me a REBUILD is the tearing down of the foundation of your team, and building from the ground up. We simply are not doing that.

A rebuild normally has starters being traded away for draft picks, and most of your team really turned over, especially starters.

Until you have a LEGIT QB, you are always going to be replacing that position, that doesnt constitute a rebuild, thats simply building a team and addressing the most important position.

Our O-line needs no rebuilding
Our D-line has 2 of 3 from last year
Our LB has one FA addition, and the rest players from last year
WR corps essentially the same minus an upgrade to the slot
RBs same, except lewis came in and surprised. then injuries caused transition

hell im not even going through all the groups. Fact is, most of the starters from last year will be starters next week. Thats not a rebuild. I dont think we'll trash the roster next year either. Yes, we will upgrade positions of need, but what team doesnt do that? We'll need a CB, probably a FS, maybe an ILB, a TE, maybe a RB, maybe a QB.

To me thats a build, not a rebuild. You dont rebuild things with the same parts.

Things I think I know...

  • The coaching will be improved. (It's almost impossible not to be after Shurmur'd).
  • The offense will be improved schematically and run an offense resembling an NFL team (see coaching above).
  • The defense replaced it's strength (front 4) with a scheme that emphasizes LBs (a position this team has been weak at as long as I remember).
  • Yet LB is still not the weakness of this defense, the secondary is.
  • This team made no effort to upgrade it weakest positions (CB, S, G, TE, K).
  • Good QBs will eat this defense for lunch (like 50 points against bad).
  • This team has depth in approximately zero positions and is already showing signs of wear after a rough preseason.

As much I wanted to be optimistic about the new regime in Berea, it looks like more lipstick on pigs. Coaching should be worth at least 3-4 wins if the talent acquisition end had improved the talent on the team. I don't think they have and if you aren't improving in this league then you're getting worse. Talent-wise, this team is the same, therefore they're worse.

With all that said, I want 7 wins more than anything (just approach mediocrity baby!), but I don't see it. Same number I've had for them all offseason... 6-10.

New coach, new coordinators, new system. IMO, it's going to take a few years... the stockpiled picks tell me it's about 2 years from now.

05 -11 to 06 - 10 sounds about right

I will he happy with 7-9. I am expecting 0-16.

Really? 0-16?

Why? This team should be improved over last year's group, and the coaching staff is definitely better. Why would you expect them to go winless?

I can thoroughly understand an 0-16 prediction. That way, no matter what the record ends up being at the end of the season, it will be a pleasant result.

Realistically, I think we will do better than last year. It's stretch to think we will win all of our home division games. But...I'll go there. Dolphins, Bills, Lions, Chiefs, Jaguars and Bears are games we probably should win. Let's say we win 5 of those. That gives me a prediction of 8-8. I think that's reasonable. If, by some miracle, we stay healthy all season.

I feel chipper today, I'm going to say 10-6.
In looking at our schedule, I counted only 4 games that I felt were "for certain" losses... so, I padded it a little.

Browns is the Browns

... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

This is not the thread for bickering. Asking for clarification etc.. that's cool

OK.. pre-season is in the books. Browns were 3 - 1 (Big whoop) Anyhoo.. IIRC, the 53 man cut is tonight.

Lets hear your season predictions, your analysis of the Browns going into the season opener vs the fish. Take a look at the different units.. DL OL QB RB and so forth..
Discuss our schedule.. that will certainly play a part in our record this year.

Tell us how you think we'll do and why.. how will we be different from Shurm's Browns?

If you think Banner / Lombardi / Haslam will factor into the won loss record.. I'd like to hear it

Looking forward to hearing from you Dawgs..

Offense
QB = C
OL = B+
RB = A
WRs= C+
Total average grade = B

Defense
DL = B
LBs = B
DBs = C
Total average grade = B

Still not convinced Weeden is a championship caliber QB. Browns should be able to run the ball this season.

Defense should be better with the off season additions.

Team strenghts: OL, RB, DL, LBs.

Team weakness: QB, DBs.

I say the Browns go 9-7 and just make the playoffs. They will lose in the first round unfortunately.

I'm always hoping for a winning season...but I see 6-10 in the fold maybe 7-9...the defense has a secondary where there's more question marks than answers...ontop of that the CBs are all small or smallish...(they will get eaten alive at times this year) and on O...not a fan of Weeden...and really his WR/TE weapons scare noone...team still needs to infuse some talent and depth and hopefully Chud is the answer

I think the Oline will do a fine job protecting Weeden, but their run-blocking was just as bad, if not worse, during the preseason. Yes, our starting guards both died in that time*, but while they were in there, that's what I saw.

*high ankle sprain = died

Who knows what's going to happen these first couple weeks with our patchwork line, but even when a starter comes back and then gets back into the swing of things, I don't think we'll be a strong run-blocking unit.

There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

I think that Cousins will do a really good job in the run blocking part of the equation. He's a big, strong guy, who isn't very mobile, but who can move people. I do think that he'll be a deficit in the pass blocking side of things.

I do think that we are going to run more to the outside than we did last year, and that will help our inside run game a great deal. The defense can't see the handoff and automatically crash inside.

More and more I think that the former coaching staff really put players in the worst possible positions last year. I have every confidence that we'll have our guys in the best possible position for them to succeed this year.

He was pulling a lot in preseason, and I didn't like what I saw. He chopped a lot of people which I guess is effective, but i'd rather see him take a guy out with his hands/technique and greater increase his ability to maybe get a hand on another defender. I've seen Joe Thomas block two guys outta the equation at times during run plays.

I've been critical of O'neil, but I will admit he played a lot better than I figured he would at guard. I think he's better looking at guard than he was at tackle, but him and Schwarrts need to bring their A game with Wake on the other side in today's game...
