Since he’s been a Colt

I have been hearing/seeing a lot of this "since he has been a Colt" stuff. The guy averaged 3.6 yards per carry last year and less than that in his two games w/us this year. He's been a disappointment since he got to the NFL. It's nothing new.

I was told to "Watch the All 22 and learn football" and that "He's hurt, he's still one of the best in the league!"

I'm not much of a "I told you so guy" but I gotta admit, this one makes me a little happy.

I wanted Justin Blackmon so I can't boast too much. I didn't like the T-Rich pick. I never saw him play and thought "Wow he's special." Dude was average and had craters to run through at Bama.

It's amazing how big a bust this guy is turning out to be. Just crazy. How could so many professional player evaluators get it so wrong? I mean, sure us fans will make mistakes like this but the pro scouts? Just so bad.

Amazing that this FO was able to move him and recover a 1st round pick. Outstanding move!

Trent Richardson is where he is for a reason. As soon as the Colts find out how to use him, he will be just as prolific as he was last year, and more.

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

I wanted David DeCastro and Doug Martin. DeCastro was lost for the season last year and then took out Pouncey this year. Doug Martin is on the IR right now, but he had one hell of a nice rookie year.

I also liked Stephen Hill.

I thought for being hurt last year he had a pretty solid year... Maybe not top 3 pick year but very solid year for having no throwing game either... This year he's taken a step back.. I honestly thought he would do very well in Indy with their offense... Guess I was wrong... I'm thrilled we have their 1st round but I want them to lose a few more

For two weeks I put the Colts opponents flag in my sig and they won. This past week I didn't put the Rams flag in my sig and they absolutely crushed the Colts.

It's safe to say I won't be playing the superstitious voodoo curse card again

Regarding Richardson, I thought too many people focused on the 3.5 yards per carry last year and said he was a disappointment. Behind what's been proven to be a bad run-blocking line with no passing game fueled by a bad QB and some cracked ribs, I thought he had very good rookie season. It wasn't believed that our line was poor at run-blocking, but that's been proven to be quite true this year.

As much talent as I believe Richardson has the one thing I saw which wasn't elite was his speed. He wasn't a burner and was never going to be. He's a between-the-tackles power-back with short-radius quickness who can make people miss while also being a solid blocker and receiver, a true 3-down back. That's why I valued him. In Indy the line has been declining as the year has worn on and it's been well-documented that the plays they've run when Richardson has been in the game have been predictable where defenses knew where he'd be. There was an excellent breakdown of what's happening in Indy with Richardson revealing how the only shot they had were with the fast backs because of the deficiency of the line's run-blocking.

I've seen no loss of speed or quickness in Richardson from last year to this year. In fact, what I've seen has been a little more elusiveness because his ribs were healed.

I believe he's been behind two poor offensive run-blocking lines and should he ever get behind a decent one he'll be the very productive back people thought he would be coming out. Between the ribs, our line, the Colts line, the pressure to perform from the outside and from himself, and the newness of his offense in Indy, I think it's been a perfect storm of obstacles leading to his failures.

None of that means I'm rooting for Richardson to take Indy to the playoffs. I want that 1st round draft pick to climb higher every single week. For what the Browns under Holmgren were trying to do as it pertained to not having a RB, needing instant offense for an incoming rookie QB while trying to save their jobs, he was a smart move. For this regime who were going to rebuild the team from the ground up, sending him for a 1st rounder was also a smart move.

Human nature always has a very tough time being patient when it comes to waiting to pass judgement. It looks like robbery from our standpoint but should the Colts find an offensive line and Richardson helps them win a title, history may not view it quite that way. This very easily could be a situation where it's truly a win-win.

Time will tell.

A. A grapefruit
B. Alicia Keys
C. Trent Richardson
D. 12 o'clock

Interesting observation, 'Toad. A POV that speaks 'big picture' and with some allowance for the nuances of the game.

No doubt it will be assailed by some of the "black & whiters" here, but I can't really argue with the direction of your post.

Like you said, only time will tell.

In the here & now, it's apparent that trading away 33 did nothing to damage Cleveland's immediate fortunes, nor has it done much to enhance Indy's. Advantage: CLE. In the long run? We're still left to speculate.

__________________

FWIW, I enjoyed watching TR run for us last year. I like seeing heart and passion on the field, and he always came with an abundance of both. By the same token, I never argued much with the stats posters, because I could see their points, too... "3.whatever" per carry isn't exactly setting the world afire, by any stretch.

The potential you see might not be realized for at least another year or two, if it's to emerge at all. Indy has some work to do on their OL, and there's no guarantee that their deficiencies will be fixed in one offseason.

One of the things I like best about pro football is this: in a league of over 1500 people, there are still fewer than a dozen players who actually dictate how seasons unfold. And that's actually kinda cool- because it means that team effort, weakest link scenarios, and random fortune still play a HUGE role over 17 weeks. It's what makes fanboard discussions so lively.... and it's what keeps fans coming back week after week, season after season.

....so many variables.

Trent's an interesting subject. He obviously has physical gifts that were enough to get him to the NFL.... but those gifts by themselves won't ever be enough to make him a marquee player. He'll always need a team around him to be considered a winner... and that's OK, in my book.

It is, after all, still a team sport.

Couldn't be more true.

It's unfortunate that the hype-machine put the words "the most talent since" with the name "Adrian Peterson" because that put some seriously unrealistic expectations up there for people to fixate on. Without game-breaking speed Richardson couldn't be that guy. Having said that, his production has been disappointing to say the least.

And for the record, while I know in my heart-of-hearts I don't need to say this...I still need to say it...the tongue-in-cheek quip about you being my alter-ego is a reflection of what I've said before, which is that you're the level-headed spiritual conscious of the board, which is something...well...I'm not. Meant as a great compliment which could have been misconstrued...

I might be able to agree with your assessment if damn near every time I see any national figure evaluate Trent, they didn't show him missing clear lanes while running into the back of his blockers. On one of the NFL shows this past weekend it happened again. They showed a play where Trent ran into the back of his blockers .... and then Donald Brown ran the same play, with the same blocking, but he hit the cutback and ran for a big gain. There were similar examples of plays in Cleveland where they showed Richardson plays followed by plays by Obi and other players. Trent would miss the hole, then the other player would hit the hole. It really didn't even have anything to do with explosiveness. It had to do more with the basics of being a RB, and being able to see and understand what is happening on the field.

I think that Trent has a ton of physical talent, but is lacking when it comes to understanding what is happening around him.

Trent is football dumb. Really dumb. To the point where his ineptitude negates his talent.

If he was a QB, conventional wisdom says forget it.

But as an RB, he has a chance.

I think that's what you should expect when you take a running back that high. As dumb as the past regime looks right now, they still knew going into the draft that RB's have the shortest lifespan, and that you should only take game changing backs that high in the draft.

I'm just disappointed in his footwork. When I watch him and then I watch Peterson, McCoy, Charles and all the top tier guys, there is a significant dropoff. I've been blasted by people for comparing him to the best running backs in the league, but isn't that what you are supposed to do when you take a guy at 3? I don't want average or serviceable at that pick. I want elite.

Not only does trading Richardson give us a mulligan on the pick, but I also think it signals that you will never see a pick like that with this organization again.

People come up with new excuses for why he is not performing everyday ... he doesn't know the playbook, they are stacking the box when he is in, we aren't using him properly, wrong formation, etc .. etc ...

anarchy...before checking the back n forth discussion. I could have sworn that was from a Browns board. Going one better - I was like OH SHOOT those were almost word for word excuses I was giving for Trent last season...lol Well some of them at least.

I am so so happy cause I cannot remember trading a player from the clean up of another Regime getting a FIRST ROUNDER...and more n more looking so so lopsided

One thing I'm curious about is the variable that did impress me last season with Trent (besides him playing with 3 cracked ribs) was his pass catching abilities. 56 I think??? (going on memory). More n more I see him as a 3 down back in a 230something body. Not that I watch a lot of the Colts but I think he comes out in Passing situations. So his best attributes are not being utilized. I mean he's not a top 5 pick RB...but I never thought of him as a Bust not in these proportions.

Also I've said it before Running is a mentality and a commitment. Especially for the OL to produce.

Getting 5-10-15 carries there is no flow, no commitment.

As for Doug Martin I know the NFL is full of them...going back to the Broncos RBs w/Shanahan. Foster w/Texans. Heck Rainey looked like a stud last night with Tampa. 6th round pick James before he got hurt.

I've always said...most notably in the draft wars of 07 Joe Thomas vs AP... There is no need to invest to high in a RB. Not because I thought AP stunk or anything. But since 1950 the NFL has been revolving around the teams that OWNED the Air...Offense n Defense combined. And more recently even more so. My theory and many others theory regarding the draft n building the team.

RARE TALENTS NEEDED.
1. QB
2. Left Tackle
3. Elite Edge Rusher
4. Cover Corners...

No where near this list is RB! Year after year there are so many able n good RBs coming into the NFL...their shelf life is not long. They take tremendous hits. You can get a good one late first...Lynch, Steve Jackson...Mid 2nd LeSean McCoy...late rounds - Morris, TDavis, UDFA's Foster

Once in a blue moon there are an AP n a LT...but without that air game O n D see Chargers always in the playoff hunt with LT...vs the Vikings always on the outside.

So happy we got that first Round pick....I sure hope we do not utilize a big move up for QB...hope we find our guy in one of slotted picks.

JMHO

It's so much more than that. Peterson is, more than anyone I've ever seen just flat out slippery. He makes people miss in closed quarters regularly, yet still can out run anyone. He's a freak physically but also, he has such good instincts and vision. He is literally a once in a generation player and the best running back I can remember. Better than Tomlinson, better than Emmit Smith. He and Barry Sanders would probably be my top 2.

Richardson is Blair Thomas or Curtin Enis.

I certainly won't say that you may not have a point over the long haul. You very well may.

But I do have to question one thing and I won't try to say I'm completely correct here either, but I do feel it may very well be a legitimate point.

While people say that our OL is poor at run blocking, what RB have we had here that went on to have success elsewhere with a different OL on another team?

I'm not trying to say our OL has stellar run blocking ability, but I have noticed for all of the grief they have taken over this, it's rather odd that even when it came to Hillis, he never was able to match what he did here with our OL at the time.

Obi seems to do very well be it with a very small sample size. I feel most believe McGahee is over the hill and wouldn't expect much more of him on matter how well the OL did in run blocking.

Maybe we simply need a capable RB in the line up?

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I don't think it was that ... I think it was the fact that we traded up a few spots to get him at #3, next to some actual franchise changers in Luck and RG3. When you take a running-back that high, you're expecting either AP or LT.

The thing is, this isn't a RB league anymore. Joe Thomas is right. You don't need a franchise back to get to the Super Bowl anymore. In fact, AP and LT have been to as many Super Bowls as the Browns have. So I was sort of upset with that pick in the first place. But if you're going to take a back that high ... he better be a game changer.

Instead we got a guy that was average. Sure he would probably be a lot better with a good run-blocking line in front of him, but honestly, who wouldn't? When you take a guy that high, you want a franchise changer ... a guy that makes everyone around him look better. Trent had some major holes in his game. One being break-away speed, Two being his extreme lack of vision. I for one am glad we recouped a first rounder on him.

Richardson is Blair Thomas or Curtin Enis

Or any top pick RB made by the Bengals...

They would love for him to be Corey Dillon.

I think that Trent has a ton of physical talent, but is lacking when it comes to understanding what is happening around him.

Now wait, are you talking about TRich or Weeden?

Man, what a powerful one-two punch of failed 1st round picks!

Holmgren, Heckert, & Co. stole what they got, what they still get, and what they will get for years from Randy Lerner.

There, fixed it for you.

i hate the argument of "he did pretty well last year CONSIDERING HIS BROKEN RIBS."

you either do well, or you dont. if we're comparing his 2012 stats to other RBs across the league, you dont get to say "trent with broken ribs," unless you are going to bring up all the injuries every other RB sustained, IMO.

RB is a position constantly banged up, you are expected to play through injury, and most RBs are banged up at some point throughout a season.

as for "hes behind another bad line..." So what, weeden was behind a bad line, but were not going to make the excuse that he may be great if he had 5 joe thomas' in front of him. And if the line was so bad, hardesty shouldnt have hit 4 YPC running behind it. Less carries, sure, he got 1/4 what trent did, but still a large enough sample size. And you cant argue "trent isnt getting enough carries in indy to get in a groove," and then discount hardesty's production when he didnt have enough to "get in a groove."

fact is, trent richardson has 100% undeniably been a draft bust thus far in his career.

I thought last year he got the benefit of the doubt. Playing with broken ribs is brutal. Factor in that he missed the entire preseason. He played hurt all year, and in a bad offense, but came into 2013 ready to play, and we saw a lot of the same. For everyone who said he was in a bad offense again this year, they were wrong. I think he was part of the problem. We were trying to feature him, and it wasn't helping, coupled with Weeden's horrible play. One offensive touchdown in 2 games, and the one was a pass to a tight end in the two minute drill before half against Miami.

Trent was tough at the goal line. 12 TD's last year isn't horrible. But a year and a half into his career he looks like a #2 RB. When you are picked 3 overall at that position, you are always going to be looked at as a bad pick. Doesn't mean he can't salvage his career, but man Indy is regretting it.

Say what you want about McGahee, but we are pretty much getting the same production out of a guy picked up off the street who's had several surgeries and is on the wrong side of 30. We're not featuring him either. He did get 21 carries against Baltimore, but the Browns were winning, and had a bunch of runs just to chew up clock.

Does anyone still think Indy makes that trade if they could go back and make that decision again?

I wonder if Indy would even ship a 7th round pick for TR if they could do it again. I'm leaning towards no but could probably be convinced otherwise.

Knowing what we know now, not a chance. In fact, they'd probably hang up the phone on the Browns mid offer.

Do we know who called who? (or who called whom?)

I'm still shocked we got a 1st back, even if it will be near the end of the round.
