Manziel is electric with his feet but I don't think that he will last long running like his does. As for his throwing, I am less than overwhelmed with his passing ability.
Am I perfect? No Am I trying to be a better person? Also no

at 6'1 210, he's bigger than RG3 and Vick so he has a more solid frame to equip himself to handle the pounding.
You'd imagine him get up to around 215-220 for the NFL and that leaves him plenty strong enough to run and not get injured often, he does a great job running compact, so that wont be an issue for him, he isn't long and loose like RG3, Locker, and Vick are when they run.
He runs more like a Russell Wilson and Cam Newton when he runs. Cam, Russell, and Kaepernick all run pretty tight. I don't see that being a big issue for Manziel.

Manziel is fun to watch and the team feeds off of him but looks like he just separated his shoulder, so much for Johny football. OO and now he is back in there slinging it again. BTW here is an article i read today. Thought it was fitting. ----------------------------------------------- Posted Oct 18, 2013 @ 10:34 AM If Johnny Football played Brownies football Print Comment By Steve Doerschuk A Johnny Football perspective. Alabama has allowed a grand total of 26 points to five opponents, Virginia Tech, Colorado State, Ole Miss, Georgia State and Kentucky. Alabama gave up 42 points to young Manziel. • • • The Browns-Packers line dropped from 10 1/2 to 10 early in the week. It has dropped no more. The Packers are in maybe the league’s worst injury predicament. The 10-point spread, the biggest in the league this week, is a slap upside the orange helmet, an embarrassment. Of course, it owes to the perceived difference between the fellows who will wear No. 12 and No. 3 Sunday at Lambeau. • • • Our weekly qìick-read matchups feature can be found on our Browns story menu at cantonrep.com/browns • • • Seeing as how there is no harm in it, I am giving Weeden through Game 12 to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt whatever it is he can prove. If, at that point, it looks no better than it does now, I would give Jason Campbell a test drive to see if he can be a good backup to next year’s quarterback. Giving Weeden through game 12 allows him home games against the Ravens, Steelers and Jaguars, and road games at Green Bay, Kansas City and Cincinnati. Mostly good tests. • • • Johnny Manziel became an even more popular topic of debate than he was already after the Browns’ bad second half against Detroit. Walterfootball.com, whose draft reputation has strengthened in recent years, does what draft sites must do, posting 2014 drafts. Walt and the gang have the Browns jumping on Johnny Football at No. 12, with this explanation: “Boom. The Browns once again send shock waves through the NFL with a bold move. It's a solid draft choice, however, given that Cleveland needs a franchise quarterback. Brian Hoyer played in two starts, but he unfortunately won't get a chance to prove himself because he's out for the year. “Johnny Manziel is seen as a giant (goof). Scouts told us that he looked like a first-rounder prior to his off-the-field antics. I dropped him into Day 2, but there's once again first-round buzz building for him in the wake of his performance against Alabama. Ultimately, he has too much talent not to go on Thursday. “Michael Lombardi won't care too much about Manziel's personality flaws. Remember, Lombardi was head over heels for Ryan Mallett despite his off-the-field issues.” • • • The NFL Draft Scout mock makes more sense to us, since it has a Texas team, Houston, that will have a high draft pick and figures to want a QB, taking Manziel before the Browns could get to him. In terms of QBs, Draft Scout’s 2014 draft rankings have Louisville’s Teddy Bridgewater at No. 1 overall, Oregon’s Marcus Mariota at No. 3, UCLA’s Brett Hundley at No. 5, Manziel at No. 9, Clemson’s Tajh Boyd at No. 15, LSU’s Zach Mettenberger at No. 24, Fresno State’s Derek Carr at No. 41 and Georgia’s Aaron Murray at No. 68, Miami/Fla’s Stephen Morris at No. 76 and Alabama’s A.J. McCarron at No. 94. • • • Aaron Rodgers leads Mr. Weeden 101.9-71.4 in passer rating, 64.1-56.2 in completion percentage, and 8.9-6.5 in yards per attempt. Carson Palmer leads Aaron Rodgers 129-91 in career starts. Rodgers leads Palmer 60-57 in wins. But then, you already knew Rodgers isn’t half bad, and that many other quarterbacks are. • • • web page

I think Manzel's arm is strong enough for the NFL. I don't think there is much doubt about that. Additionally, he has more "it" than any player in the game.
My concern w/him is his pocket awareness. He wants to bail out way too early. That won't work in the NFL on a consistent basis. He will get sacked a lot and more than likely suffer more than his share of injuries.

I just do not see a sure fire franchise QB that will be coming out next season. Surely none I would trade 2 1st round draft choices for. Bridgewater, Hundley, and Mariotta are the only choices even worth using a 1st on IMO. All have potential but all are flawed also. There are no Andrew Luck's coming out next year. The best pro prospect college QB's I have seen are Winston from Florida State and Hackenburg from Penn State. Those 2 QB's have big time ability.
Bridgewater - He quite possibly could be legit but I just don't get excited watching him play. I do not know why I just think something is missing. Maybe it is the level of opponents he is playing?
Hundley - Has the physical tools but I think he locks on to the primary target and doesn't read defenses very well.
Mariotta - When I watch him I do see the skill set of a Colin Kaepernack but wide receivers run so wide open in the Oregon offense I don't see him throwing into tight windows like he will have to in the NFL.
McCarron - I see him as the smartest QB coming out but what frightens me about him can't help but think of Ken Dorsey when he was with the powerful Miami Hurricanes offense.
Manziel - He does have the "it" factor that champion QB's have to have. I just don't see a very dicsiplined player when I watch him play. He also does not have NFL QB measureables.
Mettenburger - I really like the way he is playing this season he spins it really well. I just watched him struggle so much last year that I am unsure if he will translate to the NFL.
Murray - Sometimes I see a Drew Brees kinda player in him. Then I don't know if he is physical enough. He is the same height as Brees but much more fragile.
Boyd - I see alot of Donovan McNabb in his play at times but he is not always very accurate with his throws.
The Browns need to use the New England style of drafting next season. Use 1 1st round pick on the best player available and trade the other for a 2015 1st and a 2014 2nd. Keep the ammo available when they have a chance to move up for a sure fire franchise QB.
They can use a 2nd or 3rd round pick to draft a QB like Mettenburger, Manziel, Boyd, McCarran or Murray. I believe that after their body of work all will be available in the 2nd round due to size and other factors. They can back up Hoyer and if they get the chance then maybe they prove to be a franchise QB if not then the ammo will still be available in the draft to move up.

I agree with a lot of that. Lombardi obviously thinks highly of Hoyer and if you can't be certain, then do as you suggest ala the Pats - keep stockpiling till you can be MORE certain, as I appreciate drafting a QB is the biggest crap shoot out there.
I'm all for giving Hoyer next year, drafting a prospect QB in the mid rounds, and getting a CB / OG / WR in the first 2 rounds. Hoyer seems to have *it* - he's not without faults and he may be a mirage - but for the 1st time in years I'm enthused by a QB on our roster and I'd like to see more, thank you please, before gambling yet again on another QB

j/c When quarterback Brian Hoyer went down for the season with a knee injury, so did the Browns production on third downs. Hoyer converted 15-of-33 compared to 17-of-60 for Brandon Weeden http://www.cleveland.com/pluto/index.ssf/2013/10/post_32.html

Good post. I agree w/a lot of what you say.
There still is quite a bit of time to evaluate these guys, though.
The good thing is that our FO has given us options by accumulating so many draft picks.

It's funny you bring this up, I was just reading the entire story of Johnny Football.. He's a fascinating kid. Lots of potential but something is missing. Maybe it's because he grew up with the silver spoon in his mouth (his family got wealthy in the oil industry) don't know for sure, but maybe it's a sense of entitlement that has him by the stones.
The other guys, I've not spent too much time on.
Thanks for the post

Unfortunately I could only watch a small bit of the Auburn game, but what I saw of him, there wasn't too much too like. Two INT's early, inaccurate, didn't seem like a "techician", but rather a sandlot QB...

There were a lot of things to like in that game. He kept leading them back. He showed incredible toughness. He made some great throws. Great runs. He is a leader.
Again, my only real big concern w/him is how he is in the pocket. Bailing out that early in the NFL will lead to trouble.

I like your McCarron and Dorsey comparison. McCarron will be a 3-5 rounder while Dorsey I believe was a 7th rounder. When I watched Dorsey, I never saw a QB I had hopes of being a Cleveland Brown. Joe Germain wasn't even drafted but he was better than Dorsey IMO. When I watch McCarron, I see a player I wouldn't mind to develop. Its unfortunate I missed the Alabama vs Texas A&M game. I wanted to see both QBs play. I havnt seen much of McCarron to know what round I wouldn't be upset with the Browns taking him but with the little I have seen of him, I believe he will have a way more successful NFL career than Dorsey.
Its like another college QB comparison I made with Murray and Brady Quinn. Both played for big time college programs with big time schedules. Murray was having a knock on him that he couldn't beat the top 10 teams, much like Brady. Brady would beat the military schools, but would need big plays to beat them but lose to the USCs, Ohio St.s, etc.. Murray has a good record but loses to the LSUs and Alabamas. Although Murray at least has a win against LSU this year. Both QBs had NFL talent to work with. Some say, Brady had to win on his own but he had WR Smardja who opted to play baseball but was still picked in the 2nd round; his RB was drafted in the mid rounds; a Tackle Orien Harris drafted in the 3rd and I think is still in the NFL. Murray has a good RB (I wouldn't mind seeing in a Browns uni in the right round), and Im sure he has a WR/TE and some o-line with NFL talent. But like McCarron having a better career than Dorsey, I think Murray will have a better career than Quinn. I dislike Notre Dame football. Don't know why, maybe because I feel they are scared to join the Big Ten and keeping their rivalries with USC, Army, etc.. But since I didn.'t like Notre Dame, I was kind of glad they had Brady Quinn. I always thought he was overrated and succeeded because he was surrounded by decent talent and with good coaching. I loved that he fell in the draft because I never thought he was 1st round talent. Then I was so upset that the Browns drafted him. That they traded picks for him. As soon as I saw the pick and got to collect my thoughts, I pictured Charlie Weiss selling his QB and telling his old buddy Crennel and pulling a fast one over the southern salesman Savage, by telling them that Brady Quinn reminded him of Tom Brady and could be that caliber of player. I saw Weiss trying to sell his QB to show future prospects what he could do for them. But when I watch Murray, I think he has talent. By saying that he would have a better career than Quinn is saying a lot considering Quinn has been in the league a decent amount of time. He has started for a couple of teams, but the dude couldn't get playing time over Tebow(another QB I wanted nothing to do with and didn't think was worth mentioning as a 1st rounder) I am in disbelief that an NFL team thinks Quinn can step in and win a string of games. I also never viewed Quinn as a smart individual that can mentor a young QB, like a Pederson/ Dorsey type player who has the smarts but not the talent. I wouldn't be upset by any means with Murray in the 2nd. A QB I actually like watching play that can make NFL throws. Throw to sustain drives and game winning throws.
In a way, I also compare Murray to Tom Brady in college. Playing for a great football program that's a notch below elite. Both don't have the best record against top rated programs, both playing against college defenses riddled with NFL talent, both beating teams with NFL talent, both playing for teams that are good programs that have failed seasons because they started on teams with 2-3 losses a year. The only difference is Murray is the man and not getting pushed out of a starting job like Brady did with Drew Henson nipping at his heels. Tom Brady leaving college early because Drew Henson would have taken over, now look at them. Both QBs play better then the string of over rated Notre Dame QBs that get drafted in the 1st round. When I saw that the Browns picked Spergon Wynn over Tom Brady, I was upset that the Browns didn't take Brady in the 6th because of the reason I mentioned above. I will never admit that I went into the draft hoping the Browns take Brady, like I am with the Browns possibly taking Murray,or that I thought Brady would have a HOF career. But I was upset from the get that that happened. A small school QB that didn't even have the stats of a great small school QB (McNair) playing against other small schools versus a Michigan QB facing Big Ten defenses. That was an argument I made the next day after reviewing the teams round by round. I did that a lot, arguing about "who" they drafted and didn't draft during my day after full round reviews.
Anyways, no way Manziel or Boyd goes past the 1st round. I think Boyd is better than Gino Smith. Im upset I missed the FSU blowout. Big time upset. It would have been the 3rd time I watched Boyd this year and I want to see how he struggled in that whoopin.

Look at his body of work and I think what you'll see is that those things you point out were more like anomalies.
He seems to be way more solid than you portray him to be.
But still, look at his demeanor off the field, he strikes me as someone that feels entitled. I don't know if that's really the case, but it feels that way.
From a technical standpoint, there isn't much of a question, he's talented, but,at the college level. So was Colt McCoy. It didn't translate to the NFL.
Take from that what you will.

Colt was another QB that the Browns drafted that I didn't see as a player I wanted the Browns to draft. When Colt came out to help his draft stock and say that Holmgren told him "you remind me of Steve Young," I never saw Young in college, so I couldn't make the comparison. I thought that maybe there is something that I don't see that an NFL vet sees. I was trying to be optimistic about the pickup just like I tried to be optimistic about Wynn, Frye, and McCown. I didn't see any of them play in college and hoped that the current Browns regimes are Pros and that they know what they are doing. I guess not since I havnt heard of any of these past regimes being successful in the NFL after they failed in Cleveland.
I tried to be optimistic about each draftee but Holmgren must have changed his tune on the Young comparison by drafting WEEDEN in the 1st. Like an "Oh crap! We need a NFL caliber QB, LIKE NOW!" So lets draft an old seasoned pro in Weeden and expect him to start right away. Two huge failures by the Holmgren regime at attempting to draft a QB and building a long term solution thru the draft. Kind of like Wallace and Frye in Seattle. But what I didn't get was, why did he draft Wallace, then decide he wanted Frye as a QB of the future/backup because obviously Wallace didn't cut it, then he brings Wallace to Cleveland after neither Wallace or Frye cut it as a spot starting backup?
I think Holmgren owes 15% of the money he made in Cleveland to Shaun Alexander. I guess Hasselbeck playing average with a good team around him made Holmgren look like he knew personnel. But Seattle didn't think so. Poor Randy Lerner couldn't make a decision to make him even look like he had a clue about football what so ever. I think he chocked on the silver spoon a few times jumping on the bed while the Browns game was on.

I honestly don't know how anyone judges college QB's anymore with the absolute lack of defense in a lot of the college ranks. Take the Big 12 or the PAC - all you ever see is WR's running free, with no defender within 15 yards of them. I could make those throws. Last night, Manziel had like 444yds passing - and lost. He made one totally putrid throw when TA&M was driving towards a score. I think he's a 2nd rounder. Then in the Oregon game, the Washington QB put up 557 yards passing ... enough to win, yes? No. Oregon put up 719 yards of offense to win going away. How can you scout QB's when they appear to be playing seven-on-seven football?

True
The PAC never had defense. A few NFL defenders came from USC but that's about it for defense in the PAC. I admit I knew nothing of T.J. Ward when he was drafted, but the fact he had an injury history and played in the PAC, didn't leave me giddy. I don't know much about the Big 12s defense other then I don't see that conference as having much at all. Especially after losing Missouri and Nebraska.

Holmgren drafted McCoy in the 3rd. Bash him for Weeden and Delholme (sp?) all you want, and I guess Wallace too, but taking him to task for having to trot the 3rd string out there is silly.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

Yeah, I felt that McCoy was a decent value in the 3rd round. I felt that the 1st round was to early, and was a little surprised we passed on him in the 2nd. (even though that might have been too early as well) The 3rd round seemed like a solid range to take a chance on McCoy, despite his limitations. I certainly had no problem with that ..... especially since we had just come off the DA/Quinn "era" ..... and had just signed Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace. I was hoping for a miracle. At first, it appeared that we might have caught lightning in a bottle ..... until the bottle broke.

I didn't have a problem with McCoy being taken in the 3rd as nearly as much as I hated the idea that the idiot Holmgren handed him the keys to the kingdom without any real competition.
That was just another link in the chain which represents our continued failure at the executive level.

I also worry about his durability... he has frequently hurt his knee and now has injured his shoulder. He hasn't missed a significant amount of time, but with his style and size I fear he'll get beat up quickly in the NFL.
He has improved his throwing from the pocket this year, but I personally think he needs to get much better in the pocket and run even less. He is (I believe) running less and looking to throw more, but still leaves the pocket very frequently. I also am not a huge fan of how often he uses a side-arm throw.
I really like the kid, but not sure how he'll do on the next level.

Well, he earned his starts s a rookie, and I didn't really have a huge problem giving him the starting job going into his 2ns year. he looked like he had some potential to develop into a solid player.
As much as he hated the way Daboll reportedly treated him, I think that it did toughen him up some. He pushed the line between confidence and entitlement with his comments about starting before and throughout his rookie season. I know that Mangini thought that Colt wasn't anything but a backup/spot starter, and that was a real point of contention between the coaching staff and the front office. That's what made it rather ironic that just a year after they fired Mangini, they were drafting a QB in the 1st round.
Man, I don't care if it's a player we have, or someone we bring in through the draft .... I just hope that we get the QB spot right sooner rather than later.

Holmgren has the audacity to critique this staff (especially the trade with TRich). Holmgren has earned zero room or cushion to open his worthless mouth up. Failure at the executive level FOR SURE!

I think the real problem with Quinn was that he was just coached way too well. There was nothing that he didn't really know. NFL Scouts and coaches thought that they could coach a QB better than Charlie Weiss, which just wasn't the case.

was that we used 2 first round picks on him.

Weeden on what he learned from sideline: "Don't get hurt"
Well, it looks like that's the only damn thing he learned. Everything else is exactly the same.

It's actually worse.
He's regressed.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

40% completion percentage for Weeden today. It should almost be a certainty that Campbell starts next week. In a real world that's what would happen.

Still don't want Alex Smith, but he's played better than I thought he would.

He's in a system that works very well for him and he has a monster of a running back which really helps... and KC also has a defense that's playing lights out right now.
He had a pretty decent game today... I still don't think he'd be the long term answer for us and I don't remember what we would have had to give up to get him...

I was one guy who wanted us to go after Smith. The guy takes care of the ball. He is not sensational, but he wins games.

17/42........That's pathetic.I think I could complete that many out of 42.He needs to watch the game tonight between Denver and the Colts and see what a QB is supposed to look like.I haven't ragged on Weeden to much, trying to give him the benefit of the doubt, but after today and am done with him.Let's move on shall we?
After what happened last week with his underhand throw,he did the same thing today and almost got it picked again. He doesn't learn from his mistakes which are many.

They are calling him 'flipper' on the OBR right now.
We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

Now would be a perfect time to bench Weeden. This way he has to know that he has a lot more to learn then "Don't get hurt". The announcers , who get to see the whole field and a screen, are saying the targets are getting open and Weeden is locking onto receivers. Now Weeden cant tell reporters "I have to see what Im throwing to" DUH Every other game I watch, I don't hear the announcers say that about their QBs. All the same stuff the fans have been saying since last preseason. He still hasn't learned anything and he wants to say "Don't get hurt.' ???????? He hasn't learned anything. His targets are getting open, then getting out of any kind of momentum and then seem to become disinterested. I saw a Browns player act discusted on the sideline after the 2nd ball Weeden sailed. Like the player knew what crap he and his team was in for all game. Its like Weeden is learning less the more he plays. One of his best games ever is coming in as a backup to the injured Hoyer. Weedens ceiling is a spot starting backup. He was supposed to be matured. Heckert and Holmgren screwed the pooch big time with that pick. Its too bad Holgren thought McCoy reminded him of Steve Young and not Russel Wilson.

I don't like piling on and I don't like writing people off with rash judgments. In spite of that, when Weeden got pressure in his face during the last drive and he flipped the ball away in an attempt to avoid the sack; I closed the book on him. That was exactly what he did last week. That play sums up his development as a NFL QB.
The only thing he does for this franchise is help to improve its draft position.

Yeah. Even Django had to be done with him after that play. I'm sure some have heard it already but here is what Weeden said after the game about the about almost flip INT that happened again “I was trying to throw a ground ball to Obie. I didn’t want to take a sack. It was my mistake … I’m going to leave everything out on the field. I don’t care. You can cuss me if you want. I’m going to fight until that clock says zero."

That's exactly why they are sticking with him.Looking forward to seeing this offense gutted after the season.Wonder how the old regime got it soooo wrong with him and others?
