He plays on ESPN3 today at 2PM, if any of you guys get it (I don't), and can tear yourself away from OSU vs Indiana. I've still only seen some poorly produced youtube video, so I'd like to read what impressions any of you got from watching him. From what I've seen, he has a very quick release, is very accurate, has good-not-great arm strength, very nice touch on finesse passes, and prototype size - about 6-3, 220. He reminds me of Kurt Warner. Caveats: its fair to point out the level of competition he faces is weak, although he had a great game in their only loss (43-39) to a strong Northern Illinois team, which has beaten several Div 1 schools this year. Another negative - I've only ever seen him in a shotgun, so he probably would need to learn pro drops and footwork working under center.
Anyhoo, here's another video from a win against Illinois St earlier this year. You'll see him make some great throws, but you might also notice a couple slight underthrows on wide open deep patterns. I think he might be worth a 4th round pick at this point, but that might change (he could easily move up, imo) after the postseason all star game and the Combine.
I went to ESPN3 and watched last weeks game, well the 1st half, and he looks quite the athlete. The end of the 1st quarter had Eastern Illinois up 35 - 0 over Jacksonville State so as you can imagine the D he opposed in this one wasn't the best, although they were 8-2 coming into this game.
He hit some timing throws very nicely and a few were a little late. I only saw a little pressure on the kid but when it came he took off running and got about 10 yards, he slides better than Hoyer. So he's mobile but didn't appear flustered by the pressure. He was under center on some plays so it's not all shotgun. I only saw a few throws at 20 yards or greater and he doesn't have the gun of a Weeden, he puts a lot of air under the deeper throws, he can throw a screen to a close receiver without the receiver only hearing a swishing sound as it goes by. Even that may not be a fair assessment as it was windy during this game and it's hard to tell how much that affects his throws.
On one play he tossed to his halfback and ran around the left end down field. The HB stopped, threw the ball to him and while double covered and fighting off pressure that generated a PI call on the D, he came down with the ball for a TD. All around good athlete. I think what stood out was he came across to me as the leader on the field running that squad nicely.
Is ESPN3 an actual channel or just online streaming? I thought it was a channel that wasn't part of my TWC package ...
Thanks for the replay and your impressions. EIU won 70-22 yesterday against U Tenn - Martin (?). Garapollo had well over 400 yards passing and 6 TD passes. On the season he's 320-492 (65%) with a YPA of 9.1, 48 TDs and 8 Ints. His team went 11-1. Not too shabby.
Wow, first round? I was thinking more like 4th round for Garoppolo. Maybe a 3rd round if there was a post-Combine buzz about him. It won't hurt him that Marriota and (reportedly) Hundley and Petty are staying in school.
Jimmy won't make it past the second round. IMHO there is teddy and then there is Jimmy. The rest can all go lay an egg. If we used our second first round pick on Jimmy I would not be upset at all. A team that picks jimmy and runs him in a wco is going to have one of the best QB's in the nfl by his third season.
I have watched TONS of video on this kid now. If he were in a bigger school He would be going #1 or #2 in this draft very easily.

Hard to get any good film on him via youtube. I had another poster say that he would end up being the best QB in this draft so I went out to have a look.
Positives- Solid footwork- Quick Very quick release Good accuracy
Negatives Ball placement - easy to get away with at his competition level. Arm strength - mediocre arm stregth
The comparisons to Tony Romo aren't all that off who went undrafted from the same school. I seriously cannot see him going before the 3rd round though. He just doesn't wow me.
Could you get Bernie to evaluate him? Seriously, I'd love to hear his opinion after watching QB's tape. I think Garoppolo's arm is better than mediocre - I thinks its more than adequate, but not elite.
I really hope not because that would mean we failed to get him and whichever team got him would be destroying us for another generation.

I am confident Bernie would love him.Jimmy is very football smart. God if Bernie made it a point to mentor him on reading defenses Jimmy would just soak it all up and be way better than Bernie ever was because he is more athletic and a stronger arm. On a scale of 1 to 10 I would say Jimmy's arm strength is a 7. That's more than good enough for the NFL.

Who is this Jimmy character everyone speaks of? The only Jimmy who comes to my mind when I hear all that talk without a last name included is the one from Seinfeld.
Sleeper QB...if first round QBs are a 50/50 shot what are sleeper QBs?
Norv going to the Vikings - who previously I've been told were all over Manziel and he would never go past their pick. Now I wonder if this changes things...are they more apt to covet Bortles? with possibly Manziel dropping a bit? don't think he would make it to 26...
If we think he is our guy...we will use the #4 we will not take any chances...same if Bortles is our guy.
Rarely will a Sleeper QB be our guy just a kid that for some reason we like and have that "GUT" feeling about and if he's around 4-7th rounds we take him.
If its a 2n round type of talent...we won't wait for 2nd we will take him at 26...
JMHO you don't mess around with QB!
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!

I wouldn't even ask him with the poverty level of game film that is out on the internet. So much easier for people who can't go see these guys in person to evaluate game film on guys we can just youtube. Some of the highlights I watched on youtube were terrible quality.

1 (4) bridgewater or manziel, let em sit under hoyer till proven better 1b (26) zack martin, wr or cb
i said the "hoyer" word so i guess i need to preface this with... a qb has to have a line and all the weapons he needs,, but most of all he has to be a qb...running or not he has to make good decisions,, a leader and the it factor
no wonder we try and try,, that has to come to fruition...tough to do pick 3 ( 35) gabe jackson,, make the line kick ass with depth
pick 4 get a good line u can kick anybodys a## but now u gotta look d
your fourth pick could be : Khairi Fortt, ILB, pick 5,, best cb, then best wr then best wr , see the trend...the whole idea is to improve the o,, the rules are for the o.. so should our team be... weather the afc north,, doesnt matter anymore.. th o is what the rules dictate .. play along line and wr wil win every year and has for years,, i havnt thought of picks after this maybe another cb, safety or two more o line.. but one thing that escapes me is a real fullback, i mean a mean son of a b(*tch that will make sure u get a yard or two... we needed that last year the line improvements will fix that but this guy wil get mhis block and make sure su get one to two yards, maybe udfa? and fa thats another ?noticce i left off running back, hmm ,dion lewis, baker and yes ben tate can do it,, oby was cool but pedestrian ... a. bradshaw if healty is a horse...rb is soo old school it doesnt even compute to me unless they are pass catchers too we are very primed for the turnaround team, next year if we draft right but then thats always been the key and we suck at that
OVERVIEW If Smith played in the SEC or another major conference, he would be a much better known quarterback prospect. A native of Salem, Oregon, he re-wrote the high school record books and was the 2010 Gatorade Oregon Football Player of the Year, but didn't receive much attention from Pac 12 schools. His only FBS-level offers were San Jose State and Wyoming, choosing the Cowboys and starting from day one as a freshman.
Smith leaves Wyoming with several school records, finishing his career with 76 touchdown passes and 97 scores overall. He set new career-bests in 2013 with 3,375 passing yards, a 62.7 completion percentage (293-for-467) and 29 passing touchdowns. On Nov. 23, Smith set a new Mountain West and Wyoming single-game record against Hawai'i with 640 yards of total offense (498 passing, 142 rushing) and eight total touchdowns (7 passing, 1 rushing).
Although Smith played well personally, the 2013 season was a disappointment as Wyoming finished 5-7, losing five of its final six games. Smith's announcement to enter the NFL Draft came just weeks after Craig Bohl was named the new head coach at Wyoming, taking over for Dave Christensen, who was fired Dec. 1 after five seasons in Laramie.
Although he isn't a well-known NFL prospect, he is an underrated passer who has the talent to be drafted among the top 100 picks.
ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS: better athlete than given credit with deceiving mobility and very quick feet to be elusive in the pocket and avoid pressure. He has good-enough height and has worked hard to bulk up his frame, spending considerable time in the weight room. Smith scans the field quickly, works through his reads and does an excellent job recognizing soft spots in coverage pre-snap. Gutsy competitor who plays the game of football with a chip on his shoulder and he'll win over NFL coaches with his attitude, work ethic and overall football passion.
WEAKNESSES: Smith is extremely confident, but almost to a fault as he tests small passing windows too often, throwing into tight coverage and hoping for a positive play. He has good enough arm strength for the next level, but lacks elite velocity especially when he can't step into his throws. Smith can get jumpy and skittish in the pocket and needs to get his footwork under control. He is a high-completion passer, but his accuracy will dip when throwing on the run.
He popped up on CBS's list in the mid 80s a couple months ago then has steadily trickled back down on their list. As I said when they first made noise about him, I thought he did OK in the one Wyoming game I watched this year but didn't remember thinking he was an NFLer.
If you think Carr's footwork is a reason to not draft him there is no way that you should consider Brett Smith. The guy jumps around all over the place throwing the ball. Seriously if you're considering Smith in the third but not Carr in the first I don't know what to tell you. All that matters with a QB is if he can play or not... not what round you got him in. Everything Smith does, Carr can do better.

I don't agree with you on where Carr should go, but I definitely agree with the above.
Yeah, that's what jumped out at me too. Horrible footwork, plain ugly. He throws off his backfoot a lot, can't throw a decent ball without resetting and he has a strange follow through on a lot of his throws, kind of like a pitcher. Should have stayed in school, he's a project

My sleeper Qb, is them deciding that Brandon Weeden is not so bad afterall. And then he plays well, and people would say, " Who would have thought, they should have stuck with him all along."
In other news, I don't think the Dolphins are giving up on Tannehill yet.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.
