I think it's a crime that congress and the president get paid during this shutdown. I think it's a crime that privately funded national parks are shut down. I think it's a crime that we still pay people during this shutdown to "run the elevators" for the senators and representatives. I think it's a crime that our gov't. is shutting down some 1100 sq miles of ocean to fishing. I think it's a crime that O's golf course is still open because it's "privately" funded. I think it's a crime that O has said "if X funding bill gets to my desk, I'll veto it."
At some point, this country needs to realize we are screwed. This might be that point. No more living off the gov't. teet. Cut spending. Hurt now, or die later.

Parties only help consolidate all the money in politics. And I disagree with you on the 3rd party idea. I've avoided this thread because I am SO upset by this. I really HATE the Tea Party. I also feel bad for the other Republicans in the house, they are being attacked on both sides, if they work with the administration they'll be primaried and if they don't the voters will take revenge.
Personally I feel the Tea Party has become this country's version of the Taliban. If they allow credit default or damage the US credit rating further, I think to the man (or person) they should be tried for treason.
The Dems are not without guilt in the partisan politics that both parties are playing but the Republicans made a decision to own this one and Obama has them cornered and out gunned.
I take this very personally as they are messing with the Vets, defenseless Kids and the Elderly. If checks don't go out next month, there will be blood in the streets.
The lunatics are running the asylum that is the Republican House... this should teach us all a lesson! Stop voting for lunatics!
I am and will always be an independent and I wish the Republicans could give independents a reason to back them, but seriously they are like martians to me right now! I don't recognize them as friendly or even human on my level, just as some alien life form that is threatening my country and my world.

If your world is one in which the government's main job is to hand out checks, consisting of money taken from working people and given to those who don't, with no thought of how much is available and only caring about how much is wanted, then you are absolutely right that the Tea Party is a threat to that world. They aim to destroy it, before it destroys itself and the rest of us along with it.
The lunatics are those who just assume the money train will never end. There is a limit, and it has been exceeded for generations now. I feel sorry for those who have become dependent on a government handout, as very soon that hand will become nothing more than a bloody stump because it reached into one too many pockets.

So in your world the disabled vets who will not receive their disability checks are just bums? These guy that fought so you could have the right to act like that?
Or the Senior Citizen that paid into this system their whole life under the promise that it would take care of them... they just get screwed so as not to inconvenience you?

I'm really growing to dislike the tea party as well. Like so many other groups before it, it was a very noble cause at first to raise awareness of taxes and fiscal irresponsibility that was quickly co-opted by a power hungry group that used it for self promotion and has so distorted it that it isn't even a shell of its former self.

Was government funding used in the making of the first two studies? I have a hard time believing it. They may have secured private funding for them though. We apply quite often with the american diabetes association because it represents a different revenue stream apart from the NIH.

Three scientists will win this year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their role in figuring out how cells talk to one another. They do that by releasing and soaking up molecules. This basic knowledge also helps explain diseases, from mental illness to immune disorders.

RICHARD HARRIS, BYLINE: Jim Rothman started his career studying physics and when he changed course and decided to go to medical school, he says he still tended to think of living things as machines. One day, he heard a lecture that started to get into the basic mechanics of how living cell manages to package up and secrete chemicals such as hormones.
JIM ROTHMAN: It was a complete mystery how that could happen at a molecular level. And so, when I had the opportunity and was prepared to take the risk, that's what I decided to focus on.
HARRIS: These secretions are everywhere you look; pancreas cells secrete the hormone insulin to help you digest and nerve cells in the brain secrete chemicals called neurotransmitters to talk to one another.
ROTHMAN: One of the less heralded but absolute secretory products are the endorphins, which cause a good mood. Now, everybody has commented on how my mood has been very good today.
(LAUGHTER)
HARRIS: At a Yale University news conference celebrating his Nobel Prize this afternoon, Rothman credited his great mood to the endorphins his cells are secreting, along with dopamine, which is secreted in the brain's reward circuitry. His point, of course, is that our bodies rely on all these secretions. When something goes awry, diseases can often result, as varied as autism, Alzheimer's and even our body's toxic reaction to botulism.
Rothman says he's very grateful he started this work in the early 1970s, back when the federal government was willing to take much bigger risks in handing out funding to young scientists.
ROTHMAN: I had five years of failure, really, before I had the initial sign of success. And I'd like to think that that kind of support existed today, but I think there's less of it. And it's actually becoming a pressing national issue, if not an international issue.
HARRIS: And while Rothman attacked this problem by trying to understand the mechanics of secretions, Randy Schekman decided to see what he could understand by studying the genes. He picked a simple organism, yeast, to study. Today, he's a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator at UC Berkeley.
RANDY SCHEKMAN: One starts off just interested in basic science. I had no inkling that this would have any practical application. But more often than not, what one does in the laboratory can be applied.
HARRIS: In fact, once Schekman started to understand how these yeast genes worked, he helped a pioneering biotech company called Chiron to custom-make yeasts to secrete medications.
SCHEKMAN: The world's supply of vaccine for hepatitis B is actually made in yeast. And then they harvest yeast cells to manufacture and secrete insulin, which is now one-third of the world supply of human insulin is made by secretion in yeast.
HARRIS: Schekman and Rothman, working independently, gradually started to realize that their two stories were coming together. The genes in yeast were very much like the same genes in animals, so it was two complementary ways of uncovering the same basic story.
SCHEKMAN: We were comparing notes all along, sometimes collaboratively, we actually published papers together, sometimes competitively.
HARRIS: And the whole line of research started building huge momentum. Among the scientists attracted by this problem was German-born Tom Sudhof. He has dedicated his career to learning how nerve cells in the brain fine-tune their secretions in order to communicate with one another.
TOM SUDHOF: It is absolutely crucial to understanding diseases such as Alzheimer's disease on the one hand and autism on the other hand.
HARRIS: He's now a Howard Hughes scholar at Stanford University and he will share the $1.2 million prize with Schekman and Rothman.

You're in DC, right? Explains a great deal. No offense intended but I would take your viewpoint with a new discovered production mine of salt.
Personally, if a "default" on the debt occurred (which it won't), I would not shed a tear at all. Of course, we won't default on the debt because there is enough tax income to keep paying the interest due on the debts and to pay off the maturing debt.
The longer that the government remains "shutdown" (at least in part), the more and more the people will realize that they don't need it. Currently, just 17% of the government has been shutdown and nobody but the furloughed employees and their families are really suffering any detrimental effects. That tells me that you can start with cutting the current spending by 17% right off the top and then look for further cuts in spending.
It's a good start, if you ask me.

When was the last time this occurred on the FDA's watch? Are you talking about something else? At any rate, I was referencing China's lackluster food regulations and the fact that it seems like every couple years one of their businesses is killing large numbers of people through unenforced food regulation. Having safe food is one of things we as a citizenry shouldn't have to worry about and as such should be one of the last things to be shutdown. They're already extremely undermanned compared to previous decades; I don't even think they have a chief named yet.

Safe food is an entirely subjective way to describe what gets thrown at Americans . For instance I would argue that anything that Monsanto touches is not safe .

I would further state that 98% of anything served at any fast food joint is only borderline capable of being referred to as "food".

And some conservatives are crying foul. They said there is a double standard as veterans were locked out of the World War II Memorial last week after the government shutdown. Republican members of Congress aided the veterans and removed the barriers to allow the veterans to enter. 2007. The FDA inspects pet foods too. Supposedly. They failed miserably on that one.
