I mean, we're on a bubble right now that's about to be popped. I don't think we can really delay it anymore.
To be honest ... who wants to pop it? It would be political suicide. The House Republicans could of really kick-started us down that road by letting us default, but ultimately they chickened out, because they knew everyone would point to them as "the reason the economy collapsed" ... not all the predecessors that have been spending us into crazy debt. So what we get, is what has been happening for several years now ... short term solutions to defer the problem another few years, and make it worse in the long run. Whatever it takes to get re-elected, right?
The government is essentially kiting checks with all these debt increases. Paying for money we don't have with even more money we don't have.

But to look at a presidents record and say he's to blame for all that is wrong without regard to what happened before him isn't wearing partisan glasses, it's wearing blinders.
I'm pretty certain that not only have I never done that, I've never even insinuated as much.
Perhaps not, I didn't keep track of things like that. But others have made it clear that's the way they feel. Many others. As evidenced by those that are opposing me in my thinking right now.
It's funny, I've said that my opinion is that Obama has essentially sucked as President but still, just because I think that it's important when evaluating a persons performance, you take EVERYTHING into account.
I believe that if you don't, you get a skewed analysis. What real value is that except to those that just want to play politics.

I do believe, daman, you are the king of not taking a stance.
Your whole thought process is "well, others have done it, so let's not blame this guy.......". Here's the answer: the further the can is kicked (and O has kicked it a lot further than any other president, make no doubt about it), the worse it will be. And yes, unless you are on your death bed........you WILL feel the repercussions.
I'm not just dumping on O here either. I'm dumping on anyone and everyone that has to do with our gov't. They suck. They are in it for 2 things: First being : I want to be re-elected, so I'll sell the soul of the country, and 2. I want to be re-elected, so I'll say whatever sounds great in a sound byte because the American public is too damn dumb to care about details.
And you seem to follow right along. JMO

What we need is for a president to say "I don't give a crap if the pooch is mad at me - the house needs to be re-done, so the pooch is gone."
You won't get me to disagree on that. But the realities of politics today is that the person that has the stones to do that, won't ever get elected and if he did, he wouldn't get re-elected.
There for, a person with the stones to do it, would have to lie like a rug to get into office, the he'd have to pull out the clever and start to chop.. Shortly there after, Impeachment proceedings would begin.

We've been headed down this bad road for a long time..........yet all we get from DC is "well, we have to spend more....." And what has it gotten us? Nothing but more spending.
I'm not sure when it happened, but at some point, fiscal responsibility became a bad thing for the Government. I can't tell you when that was exactly, but going back in time to when I first realized something wasn't right was when my father got laid off during a small downturn from GM.. (he was a towmotor operator) I remember he and I standing out side our home in Perryopolis, PA and him saying to me, something is wrong with a system where if I get laid off, I still collect 90% of what I would have made had I worked. That had to be in the late 60's by the way.
It's funny, I listen to some politicians who say, we need the people of America to practice fiscal responsibility, the Government can't support them.. Then those very same politicians go out and spend money like drunken sailors (My apologies to the Navy)

Nice story about your dad. May he rest in peace.
But it's wrong. What happened with your dad was unions. Ain't no way in hell any company should have that ......'if you get laid off, you'll still get 90% of your wages" crap.
Same thing with unions today. Teachers, gov't. workers........put in your 30 years, and here's your lifetime benefits. Don't worry, although you contributed 10% of your salary for 30 years (what's that? 10 % of 50 grand a year is $5000...multiply that by 30 years...you get a contribution of $150,000........and retire at age 52 or 55? And you expect your $150,000 contribution to carry you for the next 30 plus years???????????? )
What ever happened to making a wage, and living below it, so you could afford retirement? We're seeing it all the time with these "unions".........and what we're seeing is "we can't afford it, so we're making cuts" I applaud them for that.
Problem is, the jackwads in DC don't see that. What they see is "hey, I better vote for that, so others will vote for my pet spending, so I can tell my constituents look at what I brought home......" vote for me.
Our system is screwed. And yes, Daman, even you are screwed.

Well, it's actually 14% (in Ohio), and it's usually matched by the school - and having an employer pay into retirement is really the same thing as being paid a little more.
So if you work 30 years, moving from a salary of about 40k-80k over that time, the total contribution is 60k * 0.28 * 30 = $504k.
Assume that the average teacher lives about another 30 years (actually 25.21 for men and about 28 for women according to this actuarial table http://www.ssa.gov/oact/STATS/table4c6.html).
Factor in about a 3% interest rate for the average 30 year time-span between the pay-in and the payout date (which makes the compounded principal $1.19M) - and it comes out to about $40k/year.
I think the nominal payout is usually around 70% of your max pay, which would make it about $56k/year for this teacher -- but you also have to factor in the large number of teachers who pay into the system, but don't make it to 30 years (for whatever reason) and so don't take out of the system at a very high level.

I think pointing out that article is preaching to the choir YTown.
I think the choir is both blind and stupid. Like I said before I despise both parties. Until we have a party that represents the average american we will all get screwed over. It's time for the average american to stand up and say "Oh hell no we will not take this crap any longer"
I AM ALWAYS RIGHT... except when I am wrong.

Something far more concrete and meaningful is called for. Simply complaining, even loudly, will not make a dent in the problem.
You have to think about how to hit them where it hurts. Think about what their power is based on, and how to cut them off at the knees.
Trying to create a voting majority to change the situation is not feasible. Too many people will simply vote themselves money, and too many others just don't have the guts to do what needs to be done.
I am working on a plan.

you are so full of bull.. I'm taking a stand right here on this thread.. I'm saying it's important to look at all the facts not just those that cater to any particular agenda.
What I"m not doing is taking the same stance on the subject as you, therefore, I must be riding the fence.

We're in for a rude awakening. You, me, and them. Things have to change. One thing I guarantee is, they WILL change, but the longer the change is put off, the worse it will be.
Even if you have, say, $2 million set aside for retirement........WHEN the change comes, it's going to hit you, or me, or him. Change IS coming. And the sooner it's dealt with, the sooner we get the pain over. Republican, democrat, independent, or martian.
People keep saying that the Chinese won't do anything because they own more than a trillion ($1.3 trillion if I recall) of our debt. They can't afford to lose it.
Says who? The Chinese Finance Minister has already openly called for an alternative reserve currency. The Dagong Credit Rating Agency (yeah, I know, it's Chinese) has downgraded US debt. So, they've essentially said that what they bought to the tune of more than $1 trillion is valued less than what they spent.
They realize that our debt is monetized (The Fed buying bonds from the US Treasury) and that they (the Fed) are buying nearly as much as in a year than the total that they (the Chinese) hold.
We're so screwed folks. I highly recommend that you make plans to survive an extended period of economic upheaval.

Their economy can't survive without us.
That isn't going to change for a long time.
But, no, it won't be pretty.
We'll eventually reverse roles and become producers for their consumption

If the current president takes the pooch out back for a good time because it's the only way he can keep the dog pound from erupting in violence due to actions by the previous President, then let's be fair, some of the problem belongs to the previous leader.
The problem is... George Bush screwed the pooch and a lot of people blasted him (much of it was deserved).. now the current president is screwing the exact same pooch and those that blasted Bush are now lining up to buy the puppies.
And just so you don't have to say it, I will.. it goes the other way too... there, said it.
Until the media, and by extension the people, start saying "I don't care what pooch the previous administration screwed, you inherited all of the good and the bad, the only question that needs answered is, 'Are you making it better or worse?'"
