Browns notebook: OC Norv Turner, RB Willis McGahee say trade rumors affecting WR Josh Gordon
By Nate Ulrich Beacon Journal sports writer
BEREA: Browns offensive coordinator Norv Turner and running back Willis McGahee believe the trade rumors surrounding wide receiver Josh Gordon are affecting him.
“I would hope not, but I’m realistic to know that it does,” Turner said Thursday before practice. “He’s a young guy. He’s not very experienced. He wasn’t the go-to guy as a young player, so this is all a new thing for him. I think when you add those things to it, it can affect him. Obviously, we’re doing our best to focus and let him understand that he’s our guy, and we want him to be as good as he can get.”
Gordon conceded Wednesday that he’s tired of speculation that he could be traded by the NFL deadline at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Reports surfaced the morning of Sept. 22 and have persisted. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Monday that at least three teams have contacted the Browns about dealing for Gordon and that two have standing offers of a high draft pick and a player. The Browns have balked thus far, according to the report.
“I would think it would bother him,” said McGahee, 32, the offense’s elder statesman. “From what I’ve seen, I think he wants to be here. I’m hoping he wants to be here. When you hear you’re about to get traded, your spirits change a little bit. But the only thing I can tell him is that it’s a business and anybody is expendable. Just go out and do your job. Do what you do. Don’t let people see you all bent out of shape and things like that.”
Although coach Rob Chudzinski and CEO Joe Banner have said the organization has no plans to trade Gordon, no one has ruled it out, either. The main reason it’s a hot topic is because the NFL suspended Gordon two games at the beginning of this season for violating its substance-abuse policy, and Gordon’s understanding is that he’ll face a season-long ban if he slips again.
McGahee is convinced Gordon, 22, needs a veteran wide receiver to mentor him. The Browns traded for Davone Bess in the offseason, but he has repeatedly said he’s hesitant to advise Gordon because so many people are already telling him what to do and what not to do.
“Josh is a good kid,” McGahee said. “He just needs that other veteran receiver to show him to see how things go. Just throwing names out like [Houston Texans receiver] Andre [Johnson], if he had a guy like Andre, he would see how it works.
“Everybody gets it. It just depends on when. I didn’t get it until my fourth or fifth year. And I was like, ‘All right, I got to start eating right and got to start doing this.’ That’s part of life. That’s part of growing. He has the talent. You can see it in him.”
McGahee, though, is reluctant to take Gordon under his wing.
“You respect the older guys, but you respect the guy more at your position,” McGahee said. “I can’t tell him how to go out there and run a route or what foot he’s cutting off of. That’s the coaches or what another receiver over there has to do. That’s not my category. I can’t help him. I can just tell him what I’ve seen.”
Turner also defended Gordon against those who thought he was slacking Sunday in a 31-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers. He had a season-low two catches for 21 yards.
“I hate when someone sees them play and says it’s a lack of effort,” Turner said. “There’s a lot of things going on. I wouldn’t question Josh’s effort.”

Out of curiosity, McGahee was signed just a few weeks ago, so that begs a couple of questions:
1) Why are people asking a guy who was selling shoes a month ago anything about the Browns, and
2) For a guy who has known Gordon only a month, how could he possibly know whether Gordon is a good guy, a bad guy, fragile, rock-solid, or anything at all about him?
Of all the people to speak about Gordon, McGahee should be about the last one.

To be honest, I would value his opinion about the situation, being a team member, than yours about him not being in the position to do so...

Well, McGahee has been around the block and from a veterans eyes he has seen a WR core work together and teach each other the ropes. He has seen vets and how young WRs progress. Im sure since McGahee has said this about the young WR, hopefully he is doing this with the teams young RBs. I wouldn't mind McGahee back next year to go along with Lewis and a rookie, but I would rather see who is out there in FA before re-signing him.
But I do agree about him being in the article. When I was reading this, I found it odd that the reporter asked a month old teammate rather than a player who would have known him longer. Maybe the other players asked give the reporter a "no comment."

McGahee has been in the league for quite a while. He's had reasonable success. He's seen a lot on several teams. I think he's earned the right to have his answers heard and to be recognized as a leader on the team. I don't think it matters how long he's been HERE. Not even a little.

This would be good pressure on Gordon as we see it's already getting under his skin.
I doubt it is the FO. Why would they want to play head games with one of their best players? Motivation is one thing, psychological torment is another.
Makes me think they just may have a team or teams on the verge overpaying for him big time. Either that or they're just cold & uncaring.
Or both . . .
Either way, I would like to find out that they were all reaching out to him and talking about the situation with him face to face. I'm not just talking about coaches, I'm talking about the F.O. as well . . .

It's not about whether or not he has a right to be heard. He does. I also question how a guy just picked up off the street as a band-aid and who surely won't be here next year can even remotely be considered a team-leader. He can be respected, but where's word from the Joe Thomas's and DQwell Jackson's of the team? There are a dozen guys on the roster that are supposed to be tenured and respected enough to be team leaders.
I think that's reading too much into this. All I'm questioning is why the one guy on the team who is least likely to know Josh Gordon at all is being asked questions about Josh Gordon, or more directly, why we should put much stock into what he says.
Back to the new question of whether or not McGhee is a team leader...if he is, after being plucked from his barka-lounger, this team is in REAL trouble from a leadership standpoint.

Who else is going to be a team leader on offense right now?
The 3rd string QB?
The FB?
The receiver who was suspended, or the one who dropped all kinds of passes the 1st few weeks of the season?
The OL that has been up and down? Neither Mack nor Thomas has ever been an especially vocal team leader. Anyone else on that OL playing well enough to hold court? Anyone on offense?
Seriously.
Besides, a guy can become a team leader even if he's an older player who hasn't spent the entire year with the team. Even if McGahee hasn't had a great year so far after coming in, he has been around, and has great knowledge of how the NFL works. I don't get why you feel that this, specifically, is a sign of the team being in real trouble? It's natural that an older, more experienced player who has had a successful track record, would be a leader. I don't see anything troubling there, even if the overall lack of leadership on offense right now is.

Why I call them all Bozos. They keep messing with his head all in the name of a story - If we have been offered all that - high pick n player...AND TURNED IT DOWN...why do they all ad "so Far". So they can write another story for their column next week. Gosh Forbid if they actually dig up some REAL NFL NEWS!!!
Banner/Chud/Norv...all have stated he is NOT ON THE TRADING BLOCK...yes, I 100% believe that WHILE HE WAS SUSPENDED we put feelers out there. Ok, that is now history. Since then we have Said the Trade door is Closed, Since then we have acted out that the TRADE door is closed (turning down offer after offer if we are to believe them). I think the interest in Gordon more than supports their speculation that he is an Elite Prospect.
What are these Bozo's trying to do...mess with his head so much so he can break down and smoke some Marijuana to get away from it all After all its the Browns and this was they can laugh at us -
Agents n Bozos...dislike both JMHO

On one hand, just about everybody in pro sports should know on some level that they could be traded if the circumstances and the offer are right... on the other hand, it's got to be tough to deal with... and the fact that you make a lot of money doesn't make it any easier..

I assume you're talking about Bess with that second option, right?

Wow ..... I don't agree with that chart at all. I had Little with 5 drops in the 1st 2 weeks.
However, if you want to add Bess to the list, then that's fine. He also has been below hos career average type performance ..... so he might not be comfortable in a leadership role either.

I consider a ball a drop if it hits the receiver in the hands, is not thrown behind him, and 90% of the receivers in the NFL would make the catch. That's how I judged Little's drops. I don't know how these services measure it. I have heard that it is damn hard to actually be credited with a drop.

In a heartbeat. Even in an era where the RB position is devalued, Peterson is a true game changer, and a Hall of Fame RB.

Yup. I don't care if Adrian Peterson only has 3 superstar quality years left, they're still superstar quality and an instant offensive identity. His presence would immensely help a rookie QB and honestly, we'd be a playoff team with him if our rookie QB is even decent. No brainer.

Chud has said in the press that he's not being traded, he's supposedly had a conversation with him face to face to tell him the same thing. Banner is saying the same thing.
Wording is tricky.. But essentially, they are saying they aren't actively trying to trade him. What they don't say is that there isn't a deal that would make them change their minds.. and of course there is..
Luck for Gordon? that would do it right?
How about Jacksonvilles 1st round pick for Gordon. It's damn near guaranteed to be top 3 at this point right?
How about RG3 for Gordon?
I guess if the deal is right, they'd be nuts not to make the deal.
From what I've read and heard both Banner and Chud say, it sounds like it will take a monumental deal to move him..
of course, the ones I mentioned are probably extremes.. but you get my drift

There are 5 things that most NFL insiders say teams need to be successful.
#1 Franchise Quarterback #2 Left Tackle #3 Shut Down Corner #4 1 if not 2 pass rushers #5 A go to Wide Receiver
Here is where the Browns are
#1 No Franchise Quarterback #2 Joe Thomas = Check #3 Joe Haden = Check #4 Barkavious Mingo, Paul Kruger, Jabaal Sheard = Check #5 Josh Gordon = ????? He has the ability but a very questionable off field
With that said between now and next season the question the FO must answer is who can they get to be there franchise quarterback and how do they acquire him. And, is Josh Gordon the go to wide receiver.
That check list tells us why the team seems so close at times to being a good football team but yet still so far away.

I wouldn't put Haden in the shutdown category, Gordon is a deep threat, not even close to go to, a Go to receiver brings that 4th and 15 pass in. Kruger/Mingo, don't seem them as championship level pass rushers ...I have my doubts we will see that. Sheard I think has the biggest upside of the 3 you mentioned

He's not a go-to receiver because of one pass?
I saw Dez Bryant drop a ball that hit him right in the hands down the sideline that would have beat the Chiefs.
That guy is alright.

I'm with you, except that I think Gordon will fall into that "Go To" category when you get that franchise QB. I don't think he's tough enough, mentally, to play at that high level despite how things are going with the rest of the offense. Obviously, JMO.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

Is Gordon really that mentally weak to be so adversely affected by trade "rumors?" Seems overly dramatic to me.

I'd consider Gordon for Cousins and a nice pick. Let RG3 reunite with his college WR, and we don't need to draft a QB this upcoming season.

I wouldn't mind this scenario either. I don't care about reuniting RG3 with anyone but I like Cousins and getting an additional pick (I think I'd settle for a 3rd rounder) for Gordon. Washington isn't making the playoffs so this would be, at worst, a mid-3rd round selection.

That's what I was saying. And now that they know it's bothering him, they will right about how the pressure is getting to him and he can't handle it. All so some people on message boards like this, and talking heads on the radio will repeat it enough that many think it is fact. I think they forget that many of these players are still kids. Or they just don't care.

I don't care who you are or how thick you think your skin is, something like this is almost guaranteed to have an effect on a player's performance. It's the extremely rare individual who can totally shut out this level of noise and perform unaffected.
These are the kinds of stories that screenwriters use to depict the press as 'a pack of jackals,' and it's effective because it's so freakking true so much of the time.
Flash yourselves back to the Bernie Kosar years. Not the Bernie Browns, but that TIME IN HISTORY. A story like this would bubble up from time to time, and fade. If there was substance, the story would pop up again- a couple weeks later. Only then, would it take off and generate its own momentum.
We have few such filters in place these days. Good journalism (and its concomitant ethics and standards) has been replaced by fast publishing. Get a splash, keep it going. Use anyone or anything to 'create' your story, then keep it alive as long as you can.
It's lazy, it's sleazy, and it misleads as often as it informs.
And in this case, you're right in every way... and it psses me off that it's so blatantly obvious. They're not even trying to be subtle about it.
I'll go on record as being a fan of Josh Gordon's story. It's intriguing to see where he's been, how he ended up in Brownstown, and what his future might be. I get that it's an intriguing story, and I'm kinda hooked. I'm interested to see if he'll become a success story or not. At the same time, I'm more than willing to have some good old-fashioned silence- when a potential story is still nothing more than a story in potential.
I love information. I hate rumor, innuendo, gossip and 'speculation in print.'
It's not news. It's what old biddies do across the backyard fence, and I have no time for that.
_______________
I hate watching crap like this play out. Almost nothing good (short-term) ever comes from "chumfrenzies" like these.
I wish Josh all the best in this. This is a life challenge that can't be solved with physical gifts on a football field. This hardship is a new test of his character, and it's one I hope he's ready to pass. I can't imagine trying to perform while handling a circus like this- when I was 22 years old.
In every interview I've read that referenced Josh Gordon, Browns players to a man have all characterized him as a 'good kid.' If that's true, I can only hope that many of them have taken a moment with him during this trial. None of them need to be 'team leaders' to do this- they just need to be friends- or good team mates.
E.Ryze: You're right. The story has now become The Story... and I won't post again in this thread until something truly factual changes the narrative. I won't add another scrap of wood to this bonfire.
Personally, I hope that the trade deadline passes with Josh still here. Further, I hope he uses the remainder of the season to legitimize the previous FO's choice to hire him. I mean that in all ways.
I want this kid to succeed. I want to see his talents honed in a Browns uniform. I want to see him realize his potential, and script a success story for himself- right in front of us all. I would cheer my azz off for him every step of the way.
I'm pulling for him, because he's a real person.

I look at the players available in the first round as WRs and I simply don't see the talent Gordon possesses. We'd have to spend a very very high pick to get a guy like Julio Jones or AJ Green. And there are so many busts in the first round at WR. We stand a much better chance of getting someone like AJ Jenkins, Kenny Britt, Kendall Wright. I don't see any value in trading away Gordon. For anything less than a 1st we are getting swindled. Even for a 1st it is highly unlikely we would find his replacement. Gordon is young and stupid. But as he matures he has the physical potential to be one of the best WRs in the league. Historically almost no one gets a year suspension for drugs (we're talking getting struck by lightning odds). They probably are taught how to mask their urine, I doubt they all give up drugs. I see Randy Moss potential and really really don't want to trade it away. (But I may be the biggest Gordon supporter around )

Eloquently stated and your words tug at one's heart.
However, the guy has made his own bed. He's been busted for drugs 5 separate times in a few years. He is the one who posted pictures of himself w/drug paraphernalia after he was suspended. He is the one who posted a drunken video of himself and Little after the Heat won the championship.
The Browns are paying him millions of dollars to perform on the football field. Again----that's millions of dollars to perform on the football field. I doubt he gets traded, but if he does get traded, he will still be making millions of dollars. It's not like they are going to cut him. He won't be w/out a job. He won't be homeless. He would probably end up in a nicer city w/a better team.
Sorry, but I don't sympathize w/him at all. Had he kept himself clean---even for only the short time he has been in the NFL---none of these trade rumors would exist.

Other than the 'nicer city' quip, I don't really disagree with this at all.
If he was clean and not on the verge of possible banishment, we wouldn't even be considering trading him.

Just clicking
Ya know, three days from now, it will be over, one way or the other. If he stays, he'll produce, if he leaves, he'll probably still produce but for someone else.
either way, the Browns have to prepare for life without Gordon since he can be gone via suspension anyway.
So, the right thing for the browns to do if they retain him, find a guy that can do what he does best. (but with no history of troubles) If they trade him, they still need to do the same exact thing.
Everything else is a big steaming blob of poo..

Listening to a discussion between Tony Grossi, Bruce Hooley, and JeRod Cherry on 'KNR last evening, there was talk that the draft pick being offered by teams interested in Gordon might be as low as a 4th rounder, which the Browns are trying to work into a 3rd rounder. Which, if you think about it, is probably about right when you consider the risk that Gordon will have a WTF moment and "backslide" - thereby facing a season's suspension. Further, considering the teams that are being bandied about - Niners, Colts, Pats - are all contenders whose picks will be late in the round. So a 4th round pick from one of those teams is really a high 5th.
I think that minus the drug issue, Gordon is 1st round talent.
Considering the drug issue and how it has devalued him, I would rather keep him and assume the risk - all the while exerting due dilligence to keep him clean. Whatever it takes - counseling, a minder/babysitter, a detective agency, contract incentives - whatever it takes. Unless we get a 2nd round pick and a QB (Cousins, Mallet), or a 1st round pick straight up, I keep him.

A 4th or even a 3rd is a joke.
Also, I despise Hooley. So glad he's no longer in Columbus.

Anything but a 1st is a joke. ( I wouldn't trade him for a first) I realize there is risk in keeping him but I would take the risk. I think he could be that good. If he gets suspended then that is a risk we should take. (even a 1st round pick is a risk, we are the Browns) I don't think I could stand seeing him be traded to another team and watch him become Randy Moss 2.0
