It is hilarious that people have this view of Ward as an average player. He is a top five strong safety in the league by every available metric.
The older people see what they want to see. It's why eventually with the younger generation getting older that numbers will hopefully replace the eye ball test. Granted there will still be some egos holding on for nastalgia purposes.

Gawd help us older folks. Just remember young 'uns: We've already been there, done that. There isn't anything new that we haven't seen. And just remember about using stats: Figures can lie, and liars can figure...

No I'm referring to the older people that are stubborn and stuck in their ways. I think guys like Clem and Peen are brilliant. However when it comes you, yes I don't think you know anything.

I clearly stated that I think guys like Peen and Clem are brilliant individuals. There are obviously more. They accept change and adapt.

Wow is all I can say Willie what a great post, really.. I think I can sum this up real simple though. I'll take everything we now have and stick a true Franchise QB in the mix and win Super Bowls, not just football games.. I think will hammer FA this year for whatever the hell it is we need, and I don't want to make a snap judgment on anyone else until I have a better feel for what we really really need aside from a franchise QB... Sorry bro my wish list and must have list is short and sweet get a friggin franchise QB and save your Benjamin's, SB tickets are expensive.... Really though loved the post, nice work... I love it when guys make posts that cause me to think, thanks...

The FO knows what they need, and have long before the season started. They are gutting this offense and gladly so.I said before in anther thread, before this site went down(BS by the way) that they, would do this and will. This offensive roster was never in their plans from day one.A few of the guys will stay, but not more than that. With all the stockpile of picks, the Browns are in good shape to go out and get some real talent.I'm excited to see what's in store for next year, and don't mind watching Weeden stink it up for the rest of the year,if it brings us a better advantage in the draft.

Well .. 6 games in, it's apparent what we need.
We need help.
On offense, we need:
RT RG QB RB Maybe a C WR Maybe a 2nd WR 2nd impact TE like so many teams are running with now
It's so hard to say on defense. I don't know if it's the starters that need replaced, or if it's the backup/nickel/dime guys that we need help with.
I think that our DL is spectacular. They are talented and deep. I like the OLB crew. I think that Sheard being hurt was a huge problem for this team. I do think that we need help in the secondary.
On defense I just wonder how much is the players, and how much it is the players just learning a new defense? I honestly don't know. What I do know is that today's performance was horrible. We've been up and down this year. We allowed 23 to the Dolphins, then held Baltimore to 14. We then allowed a bad Vikings team to score 31. Then we held the Bengals to 6. The next game we allowed 24 to the Bengals. Today we let the Lions score 31.
I do think that we need an impact ILB, one way or the other. I think that Robertson can be solid for a great defense, and that DQ can be solid for a great defense, but I don't know if they can be great together. I dunno.
I think that we'll probably find a new K next year .... but that's the least of our concerns.

Retain Horton Do not go for the QB hype for the guys with legs and no arms. Nor go for the Weeden clones around the college ranks. Use Hoyer as a template. Add Size and Arm. BINGO! Depth at OL RB. DB, SS, Blocking TE or FB.
Einstein could not even fathom the mathematical improbabilities of the Browns woes.

Once again...for ALL to see...TJ Ward was EXACTLY the guy I've been claiming he is.
Top 5 SS? Uh...no
Top 10 SS? Still no. His performance today was awful.
Wrap up...don't just hit. Coverage skills? No.
My signature line looks better by the game.
Campbell should start next week.

Dont know what you saw, but Ward was the best defender on the field in the first half, then regressed with the rest of them. Gipson was horrific from Start to finish though. He got bailed out by Ward and Skrine on two deep passes, but he was out of position all day even on the INT, which he only got because he no coverage awareness

I'll leave it up to others to psycho-analyze what I'm typing, but after 6 games this year, I have what I would consider to be an amazingly few revisions of opinion regarding our roster. What that probably says is that I'm stuck in my ways and unable to change.
I'll just work down your list, Willie, if'ins you don't mind...
I didn't envision Skrine as a #2 going into the year. He's had more good moments...or is it less bad moments...than he had last year. That's encouraging. However, his technique is still sloppy leaving him out of position too often. That's a real shame because he appears to have quite a good burst. To me he looks like a solid #3 now, though he'll have to get better before I'd be comfy with him as a #2. That means I think we still have to go get a #2, though that's kinda cool if you think about it. He gets some flack, but Haden is a true #1 in my opinion, and finding a #2 CB is far easier than finding a #1.
In more recent years I've put less and less importance on the value of the FS position, which probably colors my thoughts here. Gipson isn't tearing the world up, but I think he's doing some good things and has earned an extended look, which means beyond this season. The reoccurring theme most prevalently used in my thinking is to take emotion out of it and answer the question: "Is he part of the problem, or part of the solution?" So far, Gipson isn't part of the problem, or not enough to make a heavy investment.

QB - We are going to draft our favorite guy who is there at one of our picks. No trade ups...probably with our 1st 1st. We will agonize over Hoyer's return and still wonder whether Weeden can be the guy.
Not for like or dislike, most are now expecting Weeden to crumble and he's been answering that bell. No improvement over last season in spite of having an offense supposedly suited to what he does best. He's been benched by the organization and criticized by the media. I don't think too many will be wondering if he had it because it's not as though we're giving up on a guy who will have 6-10 more years as a starter in this league. He's essentially a finished product.
I believe they saw enough in Hoyer to honestly want to keep him here on a permanent basis as a solid #2 or stop-gap #1, with an outside chance of him actually beating the odds and turning into a viable starter. Having said that, I fully believe they'll have their eye on a top-round QB and will use whatever resources available to them to acquire a guy they really, really want and let the two dudes battle it out.
What I wonder about is this:
What would happen if they didn't love a guy enough to really invest in the pick? Hoyer's ridiculously brief audition makes that an interesting conversation, even if it's based on such a small body of work.
I'm in the camp of not being impressed by Lauvao and would want him replaced. Finding guards when you've plenty of cap room is easy, especially when his salary is $1.32 million coming off the books, as that'd make it easier to swallow financially. Has he earned a raise to $2 million+ a year? I don't believe that.
In my opinion Greco was our best guard last year, which was saying something considering he was a backup (that something is our two "starters" shouldn't have been). I think he can be the worst player on a good line and remain palatable.
As for the rest of the line, Mack isn't a stud but he's no bum. He never gets help from a real fullback or strong guard-play. He doesn't miss time, makes smart calls, doesn't get shoved around in pass-blocking, and seems to have the respect of the most important people, who are the coaches and his teammates.
Thomas remains the best LT in the game, even if I wouldn't view him in the same class as the last generation of great LT's who all played together. That list includes guys named Orlando Pace, Walter Jones, or Jonathan Ogden. Joe is gonna make the HOF if he can keep this level of play up for another 4 seasons, as that'll mean he's a ten-time pro-bowler and would likely earned at least two more 1st team all-pro, which would be 6 for his career. That'd be right in-line with Walter Jones, and I'd imagine he'd fall right behind Jim Brown and Bernie Kosar in terms of most popular of all-time.
Schwartz...He's taken some big steps backwards this year. When he was drafted I thought he was a reach. Then he went out and had a good rookie year and I became a believer. Now he looks like a stiff. I think we gotta stick with him another year just because he can easily go either way and we have other holes to fill. Having said that, by now I know we can't put anything past this regime, hehe.
Little isn't someone I'd call a starter. He looks like a guy who'll stick another year then ride out his contract as a backup because he's cheap and has some ability. I recall a conversation I had with DeepThreat several years ago (likely before he could drive ) regarding this running back-turned-receiver at North Carolina named Greg Little. He was a man amongst boys and I had him pegged as someone I wanted the Browns to take but with one caveat: It was to see him bulk-up and move to TE.
Now hear me out on this
Little could add another 20-pounds and become a 240+ pound H-back/TE-type. Would he be able to block? Nah, but neither can Cameron. Imagine the packages we could put in with Cameron on one side and Little on the other, working over linebackers with their quickness. Yeah, I know it's unlikely to happen, but if you truly wanna get value out of Little, that's what I'd suggest the Browns do. We could then get another thumper for when it's time to go big. A guy like Barnidge wouldn't be needed or even thought of in the passing game so get a 3rd guy who can shove LB's around. Sorta killing two birds with one stone.
Of course that means we still need a #2. I really like what Benjamin does for the team in the role that he does well, but he can't be a starter. Same goes for Bess. Really good player who has the best hands on the team and has a knack for moving the chains. We stole him from the Dolphins. We got him and all we had to essentially do is exchange our 5th for their 7th? Really? Yeah, he's not cheap, but he's so worth the money and signed through the '16 season. A very undervalued trade in terms of perception for our FO.
We don't have any fullbacks on this roster. Some may argue we don't need one, but I'd disagree. Oby is a utility back, but not a very good blocker. He got the job because Merecic was so bad. Willis won't be here next year, at least I hope he won't. He's lost almost all his burst. 'Backs aren't too hard to acquire, though. It's a buyers market.
At ILB I don't believe we have to start grooming anyone to replace Jackson. He's a solid piece though he's no star. If we have a defensive line he's effective, but when they don't protect him he's a liability. That's the nature of the 3-4 and most-hurts smallish LB's, including the likes of Ray Lewis. Craig Robertson is a quick, crafty, scrappy little guy, but got exposed against the Lions. The real question is can we really operate well with not one but two undersized ILB's in the 3-4? I'm really on the fence, but tend to believe we should go get someone bigger to compete with him and let the winner take the prize.
OLB's? Okay, this one won't go over well, but I'd attempt to trade Sheard. Yes, he has real value because he shows some ability to get to the QB, but he's not stout against the run and has been abused in coverage. That's no real crime because this is his first go around from a two-point stance. I think if you've spent such a high price to buy Mingo (a move I wasn't pleased with) you put him on the field now and play "live and die" with him as a rookie. Kruger won't go to the pro-bowl but he's a legit starter and so far has been a great addition. Wanted him, glad when we signed him, very glad now.
In a very rare moment since posting on this board and it's predecessor, I can honestly say I like our defensive line rotation and don't see any need to tinker with it right now.
Ward isn't good in coverage and is far better coming forward than going backwards. He thinks he's better than he is, but...is he part of the problem? I don't think so. Again, he's not stud but he's not a bum. We can win with him even though there are many better.
Now I never thought losing Dawson was a big deal in terms of team-impact, though as a fan I didn't want him to go. He hasn't been any better than the guy replacing him and we saved some money in the process. In either case we probably would be looking for a kicker next year anyway. Punter? Who cares, it's a punter.
Even though I think we're still short on terms of average NFL talent, I think we're now closer than we've been in previous seasons, though we lack talent at critical positions and I don't think our depth is any good.
With all those picks and plenty of cap room? Hey, we're 3-3 so the season is worth watching, but I'm excited to see what these wheelers/dealers are willing to do come the off-season. So far they've been all kinds of right about many moves.

I don't actually think it's that bad.. We DO need a QB. We could use a RB also.
But the line isn't bad if you have a QB that gets rid of the ball instead of taking 3 hours to figure out who, on the other team, to throw it too.
Could use depth on the line however.
I know why you say RT but remember, that was against Suh so hardly anyone looks good going against him.

Hoyer got sacked 6 times in 2 games, despite getting rid of the ball very, very quickly. We cannot run the ball effectively using conventional sets. We need help on the line. The middle of the line has not been effective. Anyone from Greco right should be worried about their jobs.
Now Lauvao is still working his way back from injury, but he hasn't played well yet either.
Overall it would not surprise me to see us with new starters at 2-3 of the OL positions next season. I do not think that the coaching staff and/or front office particularly likes the RG/RT positions, and while Mack has been mostly solid, he hasn't been spectacular. Do you give him a premiere contract if he's just solid? That's the debate they are probably having internally. In the 1st 4 games, IIRC, Schwartz had allowed 5 sacks and numerous pressures. That was with both QBs.
As far as WR ..... we have to be looking at WR2 ... if nothing else. Gordon had a huge game his 1st week back, but only 4 catches in his 2nd game. WTs only caught 7 total passes in that game.
I think that we'll look for a speedy RB. I think that Dion Lewis is the template. We want a fast RB who is a threat to take it all the way on any play.
QB is self explanatory. I don't think that they will go another year with Weeden, and I don't think that they can necessarily count on Hoyer to be what he appeared to be in his short time on the field. I think that he'll compete for the job, but he won't be handed it. Neither will the guy we draft.
Yeah, I think that we'll have major changes on offense. We'll see.

I agree with a lot of what you said Toad except for ILB and FB. I think you're being nit picky. The Steelers have used undersized ILBs. Also Ogby is fine at FB. You really don't even need one.

I think nothing stops us from taking a QB in next year's draft. With the potential emergence of Hoyer, I think the FO isn't as worried about nailing that position as they were before he started playing. I'll paraphrase you when I say, they wanted him, they got him, and (in his very limited playing time) he proved them right. Regardless of what happens with the QB position next offseason, you're going to have a new guy waiting in the wings behind Hoyer. If Hoyer keeps progressing with his game, then we have a Rodgers-Flynn situation (woohoo!). If Hoyer stays where he is or goes backwards, we have the new guy waiting. I'll also say that this FO gained a little more trust from me regarding the whole Hoyer situation. Lombardi's much publicized love affair with Hoyer made me roll my eyes, and I groaned when we went out and got him. I groaned again when they decided to start him in front of Campbell. Well, look who appears to be the one light of hope at the most important position... :-) Sidenote: This FO has made several of these headscratcher-turned-into-smart moves. I was a proud member of the Lombardi-hating Fan Club, but I'm finding myself eating regular portions of crow regarding their personnel moves. I'm totally with you with Skrine. I always really liked him, but I cringed when we decided to trot him out as a starter. He's performed admirably (kudos to the guy with the Skrine sig, btw). Even if he continues to play as he has so far (which I don't think he will, I think the bumps in the road with him are ahead), I would still want to bring in a guy or two that could push him (what McFadden was supposed to be). Stafford showed us what happens when an offense can neutralize our front 7 pressure. This defense can still add a couple pieces. Weeden: Oh Brandon, you fickle mistress. Yesterday's game was the perfect example of him NOT being a franchise QB. To my untrained eye, he seemed timid in the first half. Yes, he was limiting his mistakes and made a couple good throws, but I didn't see the gunslinger that he was talking up during the week. To me, even the "new and improved" Weeden that played in the first half isn't a franchise QB. Then the second half happened, where Weeden reverted back to his previous self. Who throws that interception that sealed the game? Who throws jump balls to your (covered) FB? 3rd and 10, clock winding down... awesome, 10 yard sack. Ugh, so frustrating. That said, I say we ride the Weeden train to the end of the season. Yes, I know the pain and sorrow this will probably entail, but this is the hand we were dealt. Weeden was supposed to get the year to deliver, and he needs the year to either deliver us performance in line with a franchise QB, or a high draft pick. I believe Weeden still has more growing to do, but it's probably not enough to make him the QB he needs to be. I did notice him get the ball out a tiny bit quicker in the first half, but then I also noticed him regress in the second half. It appears that he's a finished product, but I say we give him more than enough chances to prove he's as bad as we say he is...
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

That's because Weeds is very-much a one-read QB. If he can get the ball out to the first read he looks like a guy with potential upside, but when he's asked to work quickly through reads and progressions he shows his true colors and becomes a mental plodder.
In college he could get away with his shortcomings. In the NFL he's been exposed. The reasons for his shortcomings...which are now revealed as excuses...were that he didn't sit in an offense that fit him, and that he'd make "big strides" in his second year not only because he'd be more in the shotgun, but because the mental leap from 1st year to 2nd year would be coming.
No luck for any of that.
I'm gonna be spending as much time as possible watching taped games on all these potential 1st round QB's. We won't get a sniff at Bridgewater, but the rest are potentials due to the draft picks we have.
Couldn't agree more on leaving him in as the starter. Sorta like giving him enough rope to hang himself so the few that still believe in him will have a bigger body of work to try and defend or otherwise give them the information they need to change their mind. Of course if Weeds makes a few more idiotic moves like getting an intentional grounding without any pressure or doing his best Garo Yepremian impression again the players will quit on him then the coaches will have no choice but to turn to Campbell. Of course if that happens it'll be enough ammunition for even the most diehard Weeden supports to finally bury him.

For me so far this year I've loved the progress I've seen from Hundley and Mariota. If I were Banner/Lombardi, those would be my two targets (even before Bridgewater to be honest).
Here would be my order:
1. Mariota 2. Hundley 3. Bridgewater 4. Boyd
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

We will be able to get any QB we want besides whoever is getting drafted #1 overall. At this point I think Mariota is at the top of the QB pile.

??
I disagree. There are alot of teams besides JAX that could end up ahead of us who could also grab a QB.
Vikings Bucs Texans Titans Eagles Rams Cardinals Raiders (50/50 at this point) Jets (less than 50/50 of taking QB, but possible if they end up top10)

My guess is that we trade our first round picks and move up to the position we think we can get our franchise QB. Could be we have to move up to the 2nd pick.

I should have been more clear. I think we will be able to trade up and get the QB we want. Some team will value the picks over the QB and trade with us.
Even if we can't trade up, there seems to be a pretty good amount of talented QBs in this draft (Mariota, Hundley, Manziel, etc. leave early). Hopefully we get the right guy.

I haven't seen enough of the qbs to really back one guy. All I know is that we will take a qb in the first round. We either trade up to get the top guy or pick one w/our own first round pick. Gotta love the FO for giving us the ability to move if we want to.
I hope Hoyer gets a shot. It's such a shame that he didn't stay healthy. That could have helped the decision making process so, so much. There isn't enough positive data on him to rule out taking a first round qb. In fact, I think it is a given that we must take a qb in round one. Just wish he would have played the rest of the season. Besides, the Browns were actually fun to watch again. The Browns are boring under Weeden and are NOT fun to watch at all. I find myself wishing the games would end earlier. Heck, w/Hoyer in there, I was excited about every single play and the anticipation of waiting for the game to start throughout the week was a foreign feeling. It reminded me of the 2007 season and of the teams of the 80s.
Hard to say about the collegiate qbs:
--Bridgewater: Appears to be the best. Very accurate. Smart. Level headed. Seems to lack that "sensational," "superstar" aura though.
--Hundley: Only watched him once. I know you watch him a lot. Keep us informed.
--Mariota: Interesting. Is he too raw?
--Boyd: Big numbers. I am not impressed by his reading of coverages.
--Murray: Good kid, but I think he floats the ball too often and his height is a concern.
--Manzel: No player has "it" more than this kid. However, I don't like how he spins out of the pocket way too early. He will have to learn to stand in there a lot more in the NFL or he will get killed.
--Mettenberger: This guy looks a bit like Tom Brady in the pocket. He has an outstanding arm and will take a hit. His character is off, though. That was just weird. I think he would have been the prototypical qb had he come out say 5--8 years ago. However, the game is evolving and I want a guy who can both pass and run. In that order. This kid will go high, though.
A couple of lesser known guys that might be interesting later in the draft:
Blake Bortles of UCF is pretty darn accurate and gets rid of it quick. Not a huge arm, but strong enough. He does tend to throw high when pressured.
Renner from UNC. Fans have been tough on him, but he has a good arm and has played in a lot of different offenses. He seems to make big plays at the end of games. He also makes some dumb plays.
Like others, I will keep watching all the qbs as much as I can. Opinions will probably change as the year goes on.

Of all the guys on that list only Manziel has proven himself against the best teams in college football. Manziel beat once and had his team on the brink again of beating the best team in college football for the past decade.
I am a firm believer that the competition you play and how you play against them means something.

It does, but he is going to have to cool it w/that reverse spin that he over utilizes. Russel Wilson uses it, too.....just as Fran Tarkenton did back in day. Manzel does it way too early, though. He is going to have to learn to stand in the pocket longer and make more plays from the pocket.
But again..............no one has "it" more than that kid.

I forgot to add this.
It is absolutely imperative that we finally get this first round pick of a qb right. We have drafted three qbs in the first round and all have stunk. Not just been disappointing. Not just bad. But awful!
We gotta get this right!!!! If not, it's more of the same.

Mariota has played and beaten some good teams. The Pac-12 is pretty legit this year so we will see soon if Mariota is the real deal. He crushed Washington last week and they are pretty good. He still has UCLA and Stanford on the schedule along with the Pac-12 Championship game (most likely) and a bowl game.

Have you watched him much? I've only seen parts of two games.
Does he read coverages? How is his pocket presence? Is he accurate when pressured? Does he audible at the los? Does he throw guys open?

Talk about a drastic change. Weeden with zero confidence, a horrible disposition and in walks, this 21 year old kid with swagger off the charts.

I think Bridgewater is the clear favorite and we may not have the chance to go get him, but Mariota is really starting to get me interested.
He has all the measurables, IMO has underrated arm strength and can be accurate outside the pocket, and can run effectively with the ball when necessary, and looks to be a very good decision maker. Also, I read an article that he's a good kid who comes from a good family-- that's never a bad thing when it comes to someone's character. Chip Kelly would love to get him back into his offense, I'd imagine.
Admittedly, I have not watched a ton of him, but what I have seen is impressive. I will make an effort to watch him a bit more.
At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.

I've watched Mariota a few times and am in love with him already ... he is my pick and I'm sticking to it.
Now I just hope we can beat Chip Kelly to him.
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."
